PAIRING. jeno x fem!oc
WARNINGS. none
SUMMARY. after a photo of him and his co-star makes the headlines, jeno finds himself in a complicated situation with percy kim, his castmate who seems to have some resentment towards him.
[ or alternatively: maybe percy needs to stop holding grudges against her co-star, and maybe jeno needs to study his lines instead of his fake girlfriend. ]
— ‘love ko ‘to 🫶’ gc! (jeno’s friend group)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
jeno lee, 22, samu vera in ‘affluenza’, movie actor (he rarely accepts tv show projects), kinda has a cold and mysterious image, may sikat na pinsan, mcdo endorser pero jabee enjoyer, mukhang seryoso sa buhay pero pag nasimulan manggago baka di na tumigil, gold rush and willow personified.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
jaemin na, 22, callum valle in ‘affluenza’, tv and movie actor, has been jeno’s best friend since they were kids, nagsimula as a child actor, nahila lang ni jeno na sumali sa ‘affluenza’ kasi “where you lead, i will follow” sila, jeno’s long live friend.
mark lee, 23, singer/songwriter, producer, that one friend that unironically uses “dude” and “bro” all the time, looks like he’s got everything figured out (he doesn’t), embodiment of no thoughts head empty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
guanheng “hendery” huang, 23, archie solis in ‘affluenza’, up and coming actor, has played a lot of supporting/minor roles, nakakasagap lagi ng chismis somehow… no one knows how he does this.

Syrin's Muse- Prologue
Tumblr media
💧- angst/ F! OC x Rick Flag Part 1/ (?) W.C: 2,600+ Summary: people from her town call her Syrin, she's a performer, and it's at a night like this she meets Flag. The first time she meets Flag it's pure coincidence. However, the next time they meet up it's planned- Waller sets it up for him to bring her in as she is a vigilante/villain.
Verana (Rani/Vera) Sonare [so-nah-ray] Cadenza[codename Syrin] - she can manipulate sound and light (from head to toe and especially her vocals) (not only can she hypnotize you like those of legend but she can emit a blueish/lilac aura and most ppl can smell the scent of lilacs some even taste berries [grapes/blueberries/blackberries) As a Meta, some of her abilities are still a bit of a mystery to many.
⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈⥈
Walking down the street, the stars, street lamps, and passing cars illuminate the area around her and the bounding woman beside her. As they made their way to the bar her lifelong friend had picked out, she couldn't stop smiling. The woman in front of her begged her to travel across the country with her for a little vacation. Now as Sila giddily skipped down the sidewalk, Verana walked calmly behind her taking in the colder weather.
When they reached the bar Sila grabbed Verana by her hand and dragged her inside. The bar, pulsed with drowning music, not too many people out for a Friday night. Verana looked around at the place her friend chose, this time taking her friend's hand and leading her to the bar.
"Excuse me, pardon? Could we get 2 shots tequila and 2 shots vodka, thanks." Verana gave a small smile to the bartender in front of them. As the shots were placed in front of them the ladies looked at each other, each of them taking one in hand and tapping the glasses together before tossing them back. The burning liquor passed down her throat and it gave her a sense of relaxation.
As the night moved on, with a few more drinks in them the pair of them danced together. A group of people around them also dancing but Verana could feel eyes on her as she hummed along to the beat she danced to. As she danced, twirling around, flaring out the end of her skirt as she did so- she met the eyes of a stranger. He was sat in a corner of the bar, a drink in hand. The way he stood she could tell he towered over her.
With the liquid courage still coursing through her, she combed her hair back and smiled at him. Something in the air thickened as she continued humming and the mystery man made his way over to her. Verana danced her back to his front, their hands slightly laced. She hummed continuously as he turned her around, her head meeting just at his chest.
He gently tilted her head back to see her face, his warm brown eyes gazing into her indigo blue ones. As they danced she could feel something around them change. Something was different.
As they danced to the beat, he leaned down and she followed in his lips an inch from her face as his breath fanned hers. It was slow, but felt warm, like drinking whiskey. The song they danced to ended, still up close, sharing the same air when Verana was bumped into the stranger- meeting their lips in a brief kiss.
When they pulled away from each other only eye contact was shared as Sila came back into earshot, "Hey V- we gotta go." She tried her best to whisper into her ear but with the music and people all talking around her it was nearly impossible.
"Some guy was getting handsy, we're only gonna have a few minutes before someone gets suspicious."
Verana watched as the man's eyes wandered across her face to her friends and then through the crowd, she long since stopped humming, the liquid courage no longer dampening her senses. She looked around at the crowd and saw 2 exits from the building. Letting go of the man in front of her she smiled softly at him and leaned up to place a kiss on the creased look forming on his face. Before she settled back to her feet she whispered into his ear almost melodically, "Forget us."
Tumblr media
"So V, you hoping you run into that hunk you were dancing on?" Sila asked as the girls dressed in their nightly gear. It had been a day since their night at the bar and the girls were getting ready to go out, but not like before.
"Ya' know Sy' I've told you already this life isn't exactly suited for that shit. And even if I did happen to run into him it's not like he'd remember me." As Verana slipped into her mismatch combat boots, she looked over her the opposite bed as Silas stood up.
"You didnt- You did not fix his memory. V I can't believe you." She gave a quick huff before turning around and tying her own shoe.
"Sy' what'd you want me to do? You had just turned some dude to stone in the back hallway, it would've been a matter of time before he and everyone else in the bar figured it was us."
Verana slipped on her old black leather jacket over the blue top she had on and adjusted the tied belt around her waist, "No- you're right. You did what you had to do- Damn. V, when did you change up your wardrobe?" Sila had turned back around and was taking in Verana's new look. The late-night duo had changed their look before, but all that remained constant this time was the mismatched boots and the jewelry, that of which Verana had been given from her estranged mother.
"Hey- you were just tellin' me how right I am." Verana gleamed.
Sila shook her head and finished getting ready. Strapping their weapons and varying pouches to their bodies their left room through the back exit and headed out.
Tumblr media
A few days later Verana and Sila had returned home, back on the opposite coast. They hadn't gone for more than to have somewhat of a vacation. But bad people do bad things everywhere. And the consequences tend to catch up sometimes.
Verana had been at her second job of the day, she was working late- covering a shift for someone who called out. Waitressing had its up's and down's but it helped pay the bills, sort of. As she was going back and forth from the front of the house to the kitchen to read off the orders she felt her phone ring in her pocket- it had to be Sy' no one else calls this late.
She couldn't answer the phone, if she had and her boss happened to see her- she could kiss this job goodbye. She let the call pass and waited till she caught her 15 to call her back. It was an agonizingly slow crawl to get to her break, table after table of customers wanting to get their food as fast as possible.
Grumbling to herself as she went out the back door to the alleyway behind the restaurant. She wrapped her jacket tighter around herself, on nights like these she was glad they didn't have some ridiculous uniform. Verana leaned against the backside of the building and whipped out her phone finding a voicemail from Sila.
"Hey girl- I know *giggle* shhh. Shut up. I know you're at Joey's till 12 *giggle* but you should come meet me at Splash. Pretty Please. I'll love you forever- And there's a guy here that is just your type."
Verana looked up at the starry night sky and chuckled slightly. Might as well get to it. She turned back to head inside when she stalled. Something felt different, she didn't feel as alone as she wanted. Looking about the alleyway she saw nothing but the main road which occasionally lit up with passing headlights.
As her shift ended she waved goodbye to Joey, having changed into a spare change of clothes in the back. She swung by their apartment dropping off her duffle before heading to meet up with Sila. As she arrived at the nightclub there were people pouring out, the bass of the club still emanating from inside.
Entering the club she looked for her spunky friend. She was never too hard to find, usually the pulse of the party. As Verana walked farther into the club she could feel eyes on her, but shook it off- she was in a club and she was highly aware of what many people thought. They don't call you Syrin for nothing...
She shook her head and continued searching the crowd before her eyes landed on the familiar brunette. She was dancing with a familiar group. Making a beeline for them she wrapped her arms around Sila as she started dancing, "Oh my goodness! Look who showed up!"
Verana looked around at the group and waved, placing a peck on her friend's cheek, "Hi sorry- work was killer."
"Girl you came from work? Like that?" One of the group spoke up.
Verana glanced down at what she was wearing- the tied cardigan and jeans, "It's not that bad is it?"
"Bitch you're gonna pop a titty out if you're not careful!"
Verana lowered her head at their crudeness but laughed. Despite their warning the night went off without a hitch- the group dancing with one and another. Some of them attracting partners to dance with and others just wanting to dance alone. But the entire time she felt eyes on her- and not the type she usually felt.
The next night it wasn't a night out, it was Verana performing at one of the clubs she usually sang for on Wednesday nights, dressed probably her best, she waited to be called on stage. The owner of the establishment was a sweet older couple who always let her pick the music, with the exception that every 2nd Wednesday of the month would be an oldies selection.
It wasn't a big stage but the club had a rather classy look to it. So she always dressed her best- and today was no different. With a gown that reached the floor, the slit exposing one leg, her hair was pinned to one side. The tight wavy hair swept to one side, her black and blue locks meeting at her hip. As she walked to the lone standing mic she pressed her red lips together, scanning the seated crowd- she gave a soft wave and smile. The small band also joining her on stage- dressed just as nicely as her.
"Hi everyone- thanks for coming into Melancholy- I'm about to start off slow here, but before I do- don't forget to tip the bartender. He'll make sure you enjoy the show." She winked jokingly at the man behind the bar as he whistled.
The beat started picking up as the band started playing the intro, Verana swayed to the beat, "Found myself walking down your street Why did you never notice me?
Empty picture frames on the wall I see your face I keep my front door unlocked Just in case
Found myself walking down your street Why did you never notice me?" As she sang she felt the air change around her. Her eyes scanned the crowd before landing on the familiar warm eyes. Their eyes stayed connected as she continued singing, "Thought I heard you saying my name (I swear I barely ever sleep) Oh no, what a shame
You're taking up all my time Da-da-da, da-da-da You ghost of mine."
As the song ended and quickly transitioned to the next, her eyes flickered to the bassist behind her and she continued her set.
The next two hours went by like torture as she continued to make occasional contact with his eyes, trying to figure out if he remembered. When it came to the end of her set she stopped the band before they could segue to the next song, "Actually guys- I'm gonna switch it up, I know it's last-minute but I thought we could perform one of our specials." She beamed sweetly and the band obliged.
She cleared her throat, hoping the man- if he remembered, if he was suspicious- could feel what was happening. The band started playing the intro and away she went, "You'll be seein' me in your dreams and I'll be there when your reality drowns."
As she started singing, swaying to the beat, she looked deep into his warm brown eyes. His eyes focused on her as she sang, sang to him, "This could be perfection A venom drippin' in your mouth Singin' like a siren Love me while your wrists are bound."
When his pupils slowly dilated she could see his chest struggle to rise heavily- her hypnosis struggling to take its effect, "That when you hear my voice Darlin' it's a choice not to fall in But it's all an act, 'cause I know exactly what you're wantin'."
Verana sang, her voice sounding as melodic as ever, the crowd too enchanted to notice that her pupils had started glowing a deep blue color, "Boy, I know what you desire Oh, you're such a bad, bad liar I want you and I just can't take it So, listen to me when I say it." Her voice radiated around her through the surrounding speakers, and as it did she could tell that her lilac aura started to bleed into the air around her.
"I'll be there when your reality drowns, " As she sang the last note of the song, her hypnosis still struggling to latch on- she quickly thanked the crowd before heading backstage. Her lilac aura quickly faded as she bolted backstage.
She had noticed more than just the man in the crowd, there were 3 others that stuck out like sore thumbs in the crowd. You can dress as classy as you want, but feds still look like feds. Verana ran to the back room, grabbing her bag and changing her shoes before making her way out the side door. Her phone on her shoulder calling Sila, "Hey, when you get this message hopefully I made it home. There were some weird guys at my show tonight, we might need to lay low for awhile. I'll explain when I get home."
As she ended the call, she closed the door behind her and she heard a click behind her back. Cursing under her breath she slowly turned around.
"Verana Cadenza, would you be so kind as to come with me please."
It was the handsome man again, damn he woke from that fast, let's try this, she thought. Verana put her hands up and opened her mouth, "Put your gun down, close your eyes and count to 100."
His features went from devoid of emotion and strict to amused. Swiftly she bunched up her dressed and in the blink of an eye she swiveled- her heel kicked up and met his cheek with little resistance. As he went down, Verana tore off the train of her dress and strapped her bag over her before she took off. Cutting in and out of alleyways she tried her best to rid herself of the people chasing her. As She made a sharp turn just a few blocks from the club she noticed the man behind her- fuck, what's happening-
She was cut off from her thoughts when a car pulled up in front of her cutting her exit off. She turned right around, seeing him once again right behind her. This time, his gun was raised aiming right for her, however, his eyes betrayed that he felt confused.
From the SUV in the street, blocking her exit, came a voice from the backseat window, "Ms. Cadenza, I suggest you give up and don't think about using your voice. These men have special filters that feed out your voice. Not mention we've already got eyes on your friend, Ms. Pero."
Verana spun around looking at the SUV and there on a tablet screen was a video feed of Sila running through the streets. Verana lowered her head and pressed her lips together along with her hands.
As she glared at the video feed she felt a presence behind her and a pinch in her neck. Slowly everything got fuzzy before her legs gave out and her eyes glazed over as they shut.
The man that stood behind her, that had delivered the heavy tranquilizer caught her in his arms and carried her limp body into the secondary car behind the SUV. He knew she was to be transported to Belle Reve. However, the fogginess in the back of Rick Flag's mind was still there.
"Flag, let's go- we have one more to round up." Waller's voice broke him from his train of thought as he attached the temporary dampening collar for her transport.

21. Do you have any Star Wars OCs? I know you do and frankly I just wanna hear how my favourite girls are doing!
Oh man, I have so many OCs in my Star Wars fics. I tried to count them all once and lost track at 43 (and only about 2/3 through my AO3 archive). The thing is, I love using OCs because they both force the main characters to interact with the world around them on an emotional level, but also because I have a deep fascination with the margin characters. The brief encounters during the Main Quest, the support staffers, the cannon-fodder soldiers, the nameless rebels brushed over in A New Hope’s opening crawl - all of them are endlessly interesting to me. So I tend to write a lot of them myself, give them some small character development or at least someone to love them, and then I immediately kill them, send them off on their own unseen adventure, or let them fade back into the background. Just like in the movies and storybooks.
Which means, I can’t actually cover all of the OCs I’ve written here. Some favorites though:
1. Herbert and his mama, from ‘A Thousand Times Between Our Eyes,’ because space crime bosses with twisted but specific moral streaks are fun, and Jyn’s still not entirely over how they fooled even Cassian.
2. Imperial Lieutenant Raeth, from ‘Time Sensitive,’ because he was a character who constantly kept Cassian guessing, and because he was an Imperial officer from a wealthy family that had his own very strange form of nobility.
3. All of my crapton of OCs in the ‘Cassian trains new spies’ short series ‘spy games,’ but specifically Silas Rue, the escaped slave turned rebel who had the most elaborate backstory I’ve probably ever constructed for an OC (and almost none of which appeared in the stories themselves).
4. MSE 113/Vera from ‘REBEL Y/N?’ a tiny, angry mouse droid who I have left hanging for a shamefully long time, but oh man does she give me room to express some of my more subversive Star Wars opinions. Also, I like to think of Jyn as an inspiration to more than just organic rebels.
5. Dalle Siever, the obnoxious cargo hauler who thought she was hot shit in ‘Cold Comfort,’ who turned out to have a heart of gold and a fist of Fuck Your Fascist Bullshit, and to whom I am endeared despite my attempts to make her insufferable. Jyn still kind of wants to kick her ass, but she respects her a bit more, at least.
6. Lenny from ‘She Ain’t Mrs. Robinson,’ a new rebel mechanic/foot soldier who actually is insufferable but has the potential to redeem himself (I hope).
7. Orange Three, an X Wing pilot from ‘A Light To You (In Dark Places)’ because, well, brief but shameless self insert.
8. And yes, Lorga the cranky Shistavanen and her (eventual, sorta, look just shut up) girlfriend Yvette Sanduni the chubby, gentle crafts-maker Twilek from my ‘One Night Stand’ series. Civilians stepping awkwardly and uncertainly into being rebels, in awe of Sergeant Erso and her ability to casually fling Lorga’s nearly 2 meter frame over her shoulder like it ain’t no thing, and just a tiny bit terrified of the dangerous world they’ve walked into (but damned if either of them are going to walk out again, not when there’s evil amok in the world). I created these two initially as cannon-fodder (well, Lorga as cannon fodder), with the hopes that her death would illustrate the vast gulf between ‘angry loner with a knack for violence’ to ‘professional warfighter in a combat zone.’ Sanduni was there to show that Soft Is Not Weak. I lost my nerve in killing them off, however...although they get really close. Instead, I had to sacrifice someone else, which I did. I’m not sorry.
Thank you for the chance to chatter about my characters. I do love forcing my fave canon characters to deal with the populated world around them.

contd [x] @dxspereaux
“No -- um,” Silas attempted to seize the gentleman’s attention again, but he was already wandering off in search of a plant that the receptionist certainly had no use for. That was the problem with living in the most rural of areas; his accent caused quite a few communication problems. One being his pronunciation. Having been raised by broad-accented townsfolk, he was sure to pick up a couple of bad habits. In this case, dropping the first letter of an otherwise simple greeting had gotten this florist in a tizzy -- and Silas felt awfully embarrassed.
“Excuse me, sir, I think we’ve both gotten confused.” He continued, following the florist to a display of aloe vera. He was right; they looked incredibly healthy, and Silas could imagine the plants in one of his rooms, but he was seeking another type of plant. A flower, more specifically. “A little bit embarrassing, but my accent got in the way. I said ‘hello’.” He couldn’t resist the urge to run his fingers across the long leaves of the aloe vera, catching droplets of water on his fingertips. The smell was strong, over-whelming, and Silas wondered whether the plant would even survive the coldness of Dire Grove.
He was getting distracted, With a friendly smile, the receptionist decided to get straight to the point. “I was hoping you could help me. I’m looking for flowers that represent happiness and purity, or along those lines. They need to be colourful, as well -- please.” As colourful as they could be against a lifeless body. The young woman She had killed only hours before needed to be rid of, but She never specified how. Silas decided to bury her with flowers that carried positivity, because she deserved a proper burial; none of Her victims should have died, but the receptionist was trapped, withheld in his opinion. This time, however, the choice hit him hard, and he mourned for the young woman. She had a future, and it was cruelly taken away from her.

THE HOLY GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST, - THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES, FROM THE LATIN VULGATE BIBLE
Chapter 17
PREFACE.
St. Luke, who had published his gospel, wrote also a second volume, which, from the first ages, hath been called the Acts of the Apostles. Not that we can look upon this work, as a history of what was done by all the apostles, who were dispersed in different nations; but we have here a short view of the first establishment of the Christian Church, a small part of St. Peter's preaching and actions, set down in the first twelve chapters, and a more particular account of St. Paul's apostolical labours, in the following chapters, for about thirty years, till the year 63, and the 4th year of Nero, where these acts end.
Chapter 17
Paul preaches to the Thessalonians and Berœans. His discourse to the Athenians.
1 And (about the year A.D. 51) when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.
Notes & Commentary:
Ver. 1. No explanation given.
2 And Paul, according to his custom, went in to them: and for three sabbath-days he reasoned with them out of the Scriptures,
Ver. 2. It was customary with St. Paul to open the Scriptures first to the Jews, (Acts xiii. 46.) and to argue with them from the law and the prophets. (Acts xxviii. 23.) St. Paul made use of the same passages of Scripture to convince the Jews, as Jesus Christ did on a similar occasion. (Mat. Polus.)
3 Laying open and inculcating that the Christ was to suffer, and to rise again from the dead: and that this is the Jesus Christ, whom I preach to you.
Ver. 3. That the Christ was to suffer. The suffering of Christ was the great stumbling-block to the Jews, which St. Paul now attempted to remove, by shewing them from the Scripture, that this was one of the necessary characters of the Messias, contained in the prophets. All the other marks were likewise accomplished in Christ. (Denis the Carthusian) --- And that this is Jesus Christ, whom I preach to you. the transition form an oblique to a direct mode of speech is very common, especially in the holy Scriptures.
4 And some of them believed, and were joined to Paul and Silas, and of those who served God, and of the Gentiles, a great multitude, and noble women not a few.
Ver. 4. And some of them, that is, of the Jews, in whose synagogue he preached, believed, and of those that worshipped God, that is, of those who adored the only true God, though they had not submitted themselves to circumcision, and to the ceremonies of the Jewish law, and of the Gentiles, that is, of such as till that time had been heathens, and idolaters; so that here three sorts of persons were converted by St. Paul: 1. Jews; 2. worshippers of the true God that were not Jews; and 3. Gentiles. In this book of the Acts, mention is several times made of worshippers, to wit, of God, by which many understand Jewish proselytes: but as they neither were Jews already, nor perhaps ever designed to become Jews, we may distinguish two sorts of the Jewish proselytes. Some were proselytes to the Jewish religion, by a submission to circumcision, and to all the precepts and ceremonies of the Mosaic laws. These are also by some called proselytes of the covenant, being as much Jews as they who had been always so. Others are called proselytes of the gate, or proselytes to the God of the Jews, but not to the religion of the Jews. Of such seems to have been Cornelius, the centurion, (Acts x.) Lydia, (Acts xvi. 14.) and Titus Justus (Acts xviii. 7.) Such also seems to have been the eunuch of Candace, the queen of the Ethiopians, (Acts viii.) Naaman, the Syrian, after he was cured of his leprosy, (4 Kings v. 17.) and many others, that lived in Judea, and in other countries. These, therefore, are called worshippers, meaning of the true God, though they embraced not the legal precepts and ceremonies of the Jews. See Monsr. Heure's Dictionary. (Witham)
Note:
Ver. 4. De colentibus Gentilibusque. In the common Greek copies, there is no and, but only of the worshipping Gentiles, ton de sebomenon elleuon, but in other copies, kai ellenon.
5 But the Jews moved with envy, and taking with them some wicked men of the vulgar sort, and making a tumult, set the city in an uproar: and besetting Jason's house, sought to bring them out to the people.
Ver. 5. No explanation given.
6 And when they had not found them, they dragged Jason and certain brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out: That they who disturb the city, are come hither also,
Ver. 6. Who disturb the city, put it in an uproar. In the ordinary Greek copies, for the city, we read the whole world. (Witham)
Note:
Ver. 6. Qui urbem concitant, in the common Greek copies, oikoumenen, orbem: so that this difference might happen in the Latin, by the change of one letter only of urbem, for orbem: but some Greek manuscripts have ten polin, civitatem.
7 Whom Jason hath received, and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cæsar, saying: that there is another king, Jesus.
Ver. 7. Another king. These Jews suppress, with great artifice, their true cause of vexation against the apostles, and change a mere question of religion into one of temporal policy. The accusation of raising up a new power in opposition to Cæsar's, had been sufficiently refuted and disavowed before Pilate by the author of our religion, and was therefore too gross to be repeated now. My kingdom, says our blessed Saviour, is not of this world. There is no necessary connection between spiritual and temporal power. It is thus that the abettors of persecution are never at a loss for pretexts, when necessary. Mad zeal is not scrupulously nice in the choice of arguments. (Haydock)
8 And they stirred up the people, and the rulers of the city hearing these things.
Ver. 8. No explanation given.
9 And having taken satisfaction from Jason, and the rest, they let them go.
Ver. 9. No explanation given.
10 But the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berœa. Who when they were come thither, entered into the synagogue of the Jews.
Ver. 10. Synagogue. In flying from the face of persecution in due season, St. Paul imitated the instruction and example of his master. When his labours are unsuccessful in one place, he renews them in another, and wherever he is, his object is always the same, to announce the truth to the Jews first, then to the Gentiles. (Denis the Carthusian)
11 Now these were more noble than those of Thessalonica, who received the word with all eagerness, daily searching the Scriptures, whether these things were so.
Ver. 11. These were more noble than those of Thessalonica. According to the common exposition, the sense is, that these of Berœa, were of a more noble and generous disposition of mind, not carried away with envy and malice, like those of Thessalonica. --- Searching the Scriptures, or those places of the prophets by which St. Paul proved that Jesus was the Messias, who was to suffer death, &c. (Witham) --- Daily searching the Scriptures, &c. The sheep are not hereby made judges of their pastors, the people of the priests, and lay men and women of St. Paul's doctrine. The Berœans did not read the Old Testament (and the New was not then published) to dispute with the apostles, or to sanction his doctrines: but it was a great comfort and confirmation to the Jews that had the Scriptures, to find, even as St. Paul said, that Christ was God, crucified, risen, and ascended to heaven; which by his expounding they understood, and never before, though they read them, and heard them read every sabbath. So it is a great comfort to a Catholic to see in the Scriptures the clear passages that prove the truth of his tenets, and shew the grounds for his hopes. But this by no means authorizes him to be judge of the true pastors of the Church, whom he is commanded by Jesus Christ to hear and obey, and from whom they are to learn the genuine sense of the Scriptures.
12 And many indeed of them believed, and not a few of honourable Gentile women and men.
Ver. 12. No explanation given.
13 And when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was also preached by Paul at Berœa, they came thither also, stirring up, and troubling the multitude.
Ver. 13. No explanation given.
14 And then the brethren immediately sent away Paul, to go to the sea: but Silas and Timothy remained there.
Ver. 14. No explanation given.
15 And they that conducted Paul, brought him as far as Athens, and receiving a commandment from him to Silas and Timothy, that they should come to him with all speed, they departed.
Ver. 15. No explanation given.
16 Now (about the year A.D. 52) whilst Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was excited within him, seeing the city given up to idolatry.
Ver. 16. Lactanius ridicules the folly of idolatry in a neat strain of irony, which he introduces by the following verses from Lucilius:
Ut pueri infantes credunt signa omnia ahena
Vivere et esse homines; sic isti omnia ficta
Vera putant, &c.
--- The poet compares these fools to children. I think them worse; for the latter only take the statues for men, they for gods. Age causes the error of the one, folly of the other. These soon cease to be deceived, but the folly of those lasts and increases always. (Lactanius, de fals. Relig. lib. i.)
17 He disputed, therefore, in the synagogue with the Jews, and with them that served God, and in the market-place, every day, with those that were present.
Ver. 17. No explanation given.
18 And certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers disputed with him, and some said: What is it that this babbler would say? But others: He seemeth to be a preacher of new gods: because he preached to them Jesus, and the resurrection.
Ver. 18. Epicurean and Stoic philosophers. The former of these philosophers held as their doctrine, that the Almighty did not interfere by his providence in the government of the world; that the soul did not subsist after the body; and consequently, that there was no future state of retribution. The latter denied that man had liberty of action, and maintained, that all things happened by destiny and fatal necessity. These were the two opposite sects St. Paul had to contend with. (Calmet) --- The Stoics believed in the immortality of the soul, and came the nearest to the Christian religion: but both Stoics and Epicureans, with all pagan philosophers, denied the resurrection of bodies; hence St. Augustine says, the faith of a resurrection is peculiar to Christians. (Estius) --- What is it that this babbler would say? A word of contempt, which some translate, this prattler. It is thought to be a metaphor from birds picking up little seeds, or the like, for their food; and to signify, that St. Paul had picked up words and sentences without any solid meaning. (Witham)
Note:
Ver. 18. Semini-verbius, o spermologos, the critics derive it from legein spermata, colligere semina.
19 And taking him, they brought him to the Areopagus, saying: May we know what this new doctrine is, which thou speakest of?
Ver. 19. To the Areopagus. In this place sat the Athenian judges: but some think that by this word may be here signified, some large hall or court, joining to the Areopagus, where all sorts of people met. (Witham) --- The Areopagus was the supreme and most famous tribunal of all Greece, before which all great causes were tried. The persons who composed it were much renowned for their wisdom. Cicero, and many other Romans, were ambitious of the honour of being an Areopagite; but the power of Athens being now much diminished, this court had sunk in importance, and was now not much more than the shadow of a great name. (Calmet)
20 For thou bringest certain new things to our ears: We would know, therefore, what these things mean.
Ver. 20. No explanation given.
21 (Now all the Athenians, and strangers that were there, employed themselves in nothing else but either in telling or in hearing something new.)
Ver. 21. No explanation given.
22 But Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: Ye men of Athens, I perceive that ye are in all things over-religious.
Ver. 22. Over-religious. Or very superstitious. To be superstitious, or given to superstition, is commonly taken for a vain and groundless religious worship, but it is also sometimes used in a good sense. And perhaps St. Paul, in the beginning of his speech to so many men of learning, does not so openly blame them for being vainly and foolishly superstitious, but by their inscription, to the unknown[5] God, he takes notice how nice and exact they pretended to be, in not omitting to pay some kind of homage to any god, or gods of all other nations, whom they might not know. For some interpreters think, that by this altar they designed to worship every god of any nation, who was not come to their knowledge: or to worship that great God hinted at in the writings of Plato: or as others conjecture, that God of the Jews, of whom they might have heard such wonders, and whose name the Jews themselves said to be unknown and ineffable. However, from this inscription St. Paul takes an occasion, with wonderful dexterity, with sublime reflections, and with that solid eloquence, of which he was master, and which he employed, as often as it was necessary, to inform them, and instruct them, concerning the works of the one true God, of whom they had little knowledge, by their own fault: that this one true God made the world, and all things in it: that from one man he raised all mankind: that his presence is not confined to temples made by the hands of men, being every where, and in all creatures, preserving them every moment: that in him we live, move, and have our being, or subsist: that it is he, who hath determined the time, limits, or bounds of every empire, and kingdom, and of every man's life: that this true God, who made, preserves, and governs all things in heaven and on earth, cannot be like to gold, silver, or any thing made by the art, or fancy of men. He puts them in mind that according even to one of their own heathen poets, Aratus, men themselves are the offspring of God, being blessed with a being and knowledge above all other creatures in this world: who by the light of reason ought to seek God, and by considering the visible effects of Providence over the world, and the creatures in it, might come to the knowledge of this one God, the author of all, at least to an imperfect knowledge of him, as men find out things by feeling, or as it were, groping in the dark. He then adds, (ver. 30.) that having, as it were, overlooked, and permitted men for many ages to run on in this ignorance and blindness, in punishment of their sins, (this their ignorance of one true God, the author of all things, being wilful and inexcusable) now the same true God hath been pleased to announce to all men, that henceforward they acknowledge, and worship him, that they repent, and do penance for their sins. (Witham)
Note:
Ver. 22. Superstitiosiores, deisidaimonosterous, from deido, timeo, and daimon. Deisidaimonia is sometimes taken in a good sense for religio, as also superstitio in Latin. See Budæus, and Plutarch apud Scapulam. See also Suidas.
23 For passing by, and seeing your idols, I found an altar also, on which was written: to the unknown god. What, therefore, you worship without knowing it, that I preach to you.
Ver. 23. It may be asked, why they had not implicit faith, worshipping the true, though unknown, God? 1st. because the worship of the true God can never exist with the worship of idols; 2nd. because an explicit faith in God is required of all; 3rd. because it is repugnant to implicit faith, to admit any thing contrary to it, as comparing this unknown God with the pagan idols; for God to be at all, must be one. Lucan towards the end of his 2nd book, hath these words:
----------Et dedita sacris
Incerti Judæa Dei.
- What, therefore, you improperly worship, that I preach to you, and instruct you in the true worship, far different from what you pay to your strange gods.
Note:
Ver. 23. Ignoto Deo, agnosto theo. See Cornelius a Lapide
24 God, who made the world and all things therein, he being Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands.
Ver. 24. God...dwelleth not in temples. He who is infinite cannot be confined to space; nor stand in need of what human hands can furnish. Temples are not for God, but for man. It is the latter who derives assistance from them. The same may be observed of all exterior acts of worship. They are serviceable, inasmuch as they proceed from, or powerfully assist, interior devotion, by the impressions which exterior objects leave upon the soul. The reciprocal action of one upon the other, in our present state of existence, is great and inevitable. (Haydock) See chap. vii. above, ver. 48. - God, indeed, dwelleth in the temple, yes, and in the soul of the just man, but he is not confined there, as the idols were to their temples. Hence the prayer of Solomon at the consecration of the temple: if heaven, and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thy immensity, how much less this house, which I have erected? God dwelleth there, then, to receive the prayers and sacrifices of the faithful, but not as though he needed any thing. See ver. 25. - God is not contained in temples; so as to need them for his dwelling, or any other uses, as the heathens imagined. Yet by his omnipresence, he is both there and every where. (Challoner)
25 Nor is he served by the hands of men, as though he needed any thing, seeing it is he who giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
Ver. 25. No explanation given.
26 And hath made of one, all mankind, to dwell upon the whole face of the earth, determining appointed times, and the limits of their habitation.
Ver. 26. No explanation given.
27 That they should seek God, if haply they may feel after him or find him: although he be not far from every one of us.
Ver. 27. Feel after him. Si forte attrectent eum, ei arage pselapheseian. It signifies palpare quasi in tenebris. (Witham)
28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being: as some also of your own poets said: For we are also his offspring.
Ver. 28. St. Paul here cites Aratus, a Greek poet, and his own countryman, a native of Cilicia.
29 Being, therefore, the offspring of God, we must not suppose the Divinity to be like unto gold or silver, or stone, the graving of art, and device of man.
Ver. 29. Cherubim, with extended wings, were ordered by God to be made, and placed over the propitiatory; (Exodus xxxvii. 7.) the brazen serpent is declared by Jesus Christ himself to have been a figure of him; therefore to blame the universally received practice of the Catholic Church, with regard to pictures and images, betrays either great prevention, or great ignorance. St. Gregory says: "What writing does for readers, that a picture does for the ignorant; for in it they see what they ought to follow, and in it they read, who know no letters." And he sharply rebukes Serenus's indiscreet zeal for removing pictures, instead of teaching the people what use may be made of them. (lib. ix. ep. 9.)
30 And God, indeed, having overlooked the times of this ignorance, now declareth to men, that all should every where do penance.
Ver. 30. Overlooked. Despiciens, uperidon. It may either signify looking down on the ignorant world, and so taking pity of it; or rather that God having overlooked, and permitted mankind to go on so long in their sins, now invites them to repentance, by sending Jesus, their Saviour and Redeemer. See the Analysis, dissert. xxxiv. (Witham)
31 Because he hath appointed a day wherein he will judge the world in equity, by the man, whom he hath appointed, giving faith to all, by raising him up from the dead.
Ver. 31. Because he hath appointed a day for judging all men with equity, by the man, to wit, Christ Jesus, a man, and also his true Son, whom he has appointed to be their judge; and by raising him (Jesus) from the dead, he hath made it credible, and given sufficient proofs of this truth, that every one shall rise from death. (Witham)
32 And when they had heard of the resurrection of the dead, some indeed mocked: but others said: We will hear thee again concerning this matter.
Ver. 32. When they heard of the resurrection of the dead. This seemed so impossible, even to the philosophers among them, that some of them presently laughed, and made a jest of it. Others said, we will hear thee on this another time, and some believed. (Witham)
33 So Paul went out from among them.
Ver. 33. No explanation given.
34 But certain men adhered to him and believed: among whom was also Dionysius, the Areopagite, and a woman, named Damaris, and others with them.
Ver. 34. Dionysius the Areopagite. This illustrious convert was made the first bishop of Athens. The martyrologies say, St. Paul raised him to that dignity. It is the same person, who, observing the convulsions of nature, which paid homage, as it were, to its God, expiring upon the cross, and not knowing the cause, is said to have exclaimed: Either the universe is falling to ruin, or the God of nature must be suffering. It appears from his writings, that he was, previous to his conversion, of the Platonic school. Ven. Bede was mistaken in supposing that he was afterwards the bishop of Corinth, of that name, who so successfully employed his pen for the good of the Church. This Dionysius lived a whole century after the Areopagite. (Estius)

Can a Low-Gluten Diet Improve Your Health (even if you don't have celiac disease)?
Tumblr media
MedicalResearch.com Interview with:
Tumblr media
Professor Oluf Pedersen Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research University of Copenhagen MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? Response: We focused our study on healthy people due to the world-wide bottom-up movement among healthy adults to live gluten-free or on a low-gluten diet. Therefore, we undertook a randomised, controlled, cross-over trial involving 60 middle-aged healthy Danish adults with two eight week interventions comparing a low-gluten diet (2 g gluten per day) and a high-gluten diet (18 g gluten per day), separated by a washout period of at least six weeks with habitual diet (12 g gluten per day). The two diets were balanced in number of calories and nutrients including the same total amount of dietary fibres. However, the composition of fibres differed markedly between the two diets. When the low-gluten trend started years back the trend was without any scientific evidence for health benefits. Now we bring pieces of evidence that a low-gluten diet in healthy people may be related to improved intestinal wellbeing due to changes in the intestinal microbiota which to our surprise is NOT induced by gluten itself but by the concomitant change in the type of dietary fibres linked to a low-gluten intake. MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings? Response: Based on our observations of altered food fermentation patterns of the gut microbiome, we conclude that the effects of low-gluten dieting in healthy people is NOT due to reduced intake of gluten itself but rather to a change in dietary fibre composition by reducing fibres from wheat and rye and replacing them with fibres from vegetables, brown rice, corn, oat, quinoa and other non-gluten containg whole grain cereals. In comparison with a high-gluten diet, a low-gluten, fibre-rich diet (other types but the same total amount) induces changes in the structure and function of the complex intestinal ecosystem of bacteria, reduces hydrogen exhalation, and leads to improvements in self-reported bloating and other intestinal comfort indicators. Moreover, during the 2 month of low-gluten dieting, the healthy individuals lost on overage 0.8 kg, likely due to increased body combustion (increased whole body thermogenesis) triggered by the altered gut bacterial functions eliciting increases in the plasma concentration of the gut hormone PYY, the fecal concentration of the microbial compound kynurenine and the concentration of the urine compound beta-amino-iso-butyric acid ( all three compounds are known to enhance thermogenesis.  MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report? Response: If they for some personal reasons prefer to stick to a low-gluten diet they can do it without expected adverse effects provided they eat high-fibre containing low-gluten products that are balanced in macro- and micronutrients. However, most gluten-free food items available on the market today are massively deprived of dietary fibers and natural nutritional ingredients. Filled with additive and preservatives, sugars and unhealthy fats. Therefore, there is an obvious need for availability of fibre-enriched, nutritionally high-quality gluten-free food items which are freshly produced or minimally processed to consumers who prefer a low-gluten diet. Such initiatives may turn out to be key for alleviating gastro-intestinal discomfort and in addition to help facilitating weight control in the general population via modification of the gut microbiota. Therefore, by now we think that our study is a  kind of wake-up call to the food industry and gourmet bakeries to produce a wide assortment of delicious non-wheat, non-rye wholegrain cereals (corn, brown rice, millet, buckwheat, quinoa, chia and gluten free oat) enriched with dietary fibres from vegetables (eg. carrots, squash), apple, psyllium seed husks, beans, chicory etc. You can bake the most healthy and most tasty bread, buns and pastries in this way. Innovations like this are highly needed for healthy people choosing a lifestyle with no gluten but associated with other types of dietary fibres, the microbial digestion of which cause less intestinal gas production and facilitate weight control .  MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work? Response: More long-term clinically studies are needed both in healthy individuals and in well-defined groups of  people suffering from gluten sensitivity, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis.  Citation: Lea B.
