Val Guest - Yesterday's Enemy (1959) It's not very common for filmmakers to seriously take on criticism of their works and try to openly redress their faults in their films, but this is exactly what Val Guest does in Yesterday's Enemy, a kind of response to the criticism to Camp on Blood Island. Camp was a very jingoistic tale which demonized the enemy and lacked any depth to the Japanese adversaries, portrayed mainly by white Brits in bad makeup. Yesterday's Enemy, on the other hand, is a profound meditation on the evils of war, on how both sides are capable of horrible acts in wartime and shows an understanding and respect for the Japanese forces (this time set in Burma) that was sorely lacking in the previous film. Even so, Guest doesn't let that make his film less compelling as a story, actually the stakes are much higher when the enemy comes off as intelligent and no one is wholly good or bad. In fact if anything the commander of the Japanese forces, portrayed brilliantly by Korean-American actor Philip Ahn, comes off as not only more intelligent but also as more realistic about the war. The speech that he gives the British commander about empire and about how both sides are equally to blame in the horror is nothing if not convincing. Gone also are comedic accents and stereotypical depictions, this is a fully realized enemy. The only two moral compasses in the film are the non-combatants, the priest and the journalist attached to the British battalion, everyone else is pretty much a war-criminal including the British who execute villagers to get information and abandon injured men to die. Harrowing stuff and one of the best films Hammer studios ever made. One of the pure pleasures of the modern age is being able to communicate with those who might have been out of reach in earlier times. One such occasion was when I tracked down the British film director Val Guest who made one of my favorite science fiction movies of all time--The Day the Earth Caught Fire. I saw the film as a kid--probably at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica on Montana--and was enthralled by the concept of a London plagued by hurricanes followed by scorching heat and the unforgettable heat mist that rose only four stories high and was as thick as the worst London fog. Edward Judd played the lead role with Leo McKern and Janet Munro making great additions to the cast. At one point in my adult life, I had a desire to see the film again so I visited The Continental Shop on Wilshire in Santa Monica which specializes in British imports--everything from licorice toffee to fine china tea sets. They also offer an extensive collection of British films and, happily, The Day the Earth Caught Fire was among them. The gentleman behind the counter who transacted the sale fell into conversation with me about the film. It was one of his favorites, too. We talked about Val Guest and some of the other films he'd directed including a segment of the original Casino Royale on which Val was one of several directors. I made the comment that I would love to meet him. "He lives in Palm Springs, you know," said the gentleman. "He's a customer of ours." Val Guest - Camp on Blood Island (1958) First things first, there's a real hard pill to swallow here if you want to take any enjoyment from this film. There's a reason why it has fallen into near-oblivion in spite of being one of the most popular films of its year in the UK and that is the fact that for a film where about half the cast is supposed to be Japanese there are no actual Japanese actors in the film. The whole thing is done in "yellow face" with British actors badly made up to look Japanese. In fact it even fails at that, it just makes British actors look slightly swarthy with heavy eyeliner, many of these are traditional Hammer actors which you will recognize from plenty of other films. It's really cringe-worthy. However, if you manage to accept that fact and look at other aspects of the film, there is plenty to enjoy here. The cast playing the POWs in the Japanese camp is pretty great, both the cast of the male camp, led by the great Andr茅 Morell and the woman's camp with Barbara Shelley taking on the main role. It is also a particularly gory and violent film for its time, emaciated prisoners, mindless brutality and an explosive final battle all make for pretty impressive moments. Is it exploitative? Yes, it's basically banking on "educational" values about the second World War to depict violence and sadism. The biggest downside here is again to do with the "Japanese" characters, these are purely caricatures with no depth whatsoever, a collection of stereotypes who seem to have no emotions except gleeful sadism. The complete obliviousness about Japanese culture goes to the point of having a character eating chopsticks while yielding one in each hand. Hard to believe that as recently as 1958 it was normal to have a whole film set where no one knew how chopsticks were supposed to be used... Crazy.
