Apple's Move to USB-C is Apparently Really Popular with Consumers
It took some time, but Apple's new iPhone 15 series phones finally ditched the company's own lightning port for the more standardized USB-C hardware format, joining the likes of the MacBook and iPad lines, not to mention countless other Android phones all over the market. With that said, it looks like Apple's latest move has been popular among consumers, especially folks who like to do a bit of reading online. More specifically, data from the folks over at mobiles.co.uk shows that the buzz surrounding Apple's new USB-C-equipped smartphones is nothing to scoff at - more than a hundred thousand news posts about the iPhone 15's new hardware feature have gone live, proving that the move to a more standard hardware connectivity solution - no matter how late - is favourable on Apple's behalf, at least in terms of public awareness and marketing reach. While USB-C ranks as the top dog in mobiles.co.uk's data chart, second place goes to Dynamic Island. The feature was introduced with the iPhone 14 series, and marks Apple's move from its rather divisive notch design, to a more mainstream camera cutout display style also seen on competing Android brands. These aren't the only pre-existing smartphone trends that Apple has adopted though, as the incorporation of AOD (always-on display) on the iPhone 14 series also proved popular, ranking in third place in terms of news posts. Given this new information, it's quite possible that Apple is feeling the building pressure from the competition. While iPhones continue to reign among the world's top-selling smartphones, it's no secret that they're somewhat behind in other hardware and software aspects compared to a multitude of Android phones, especially when it comes to battery technology and camera hardware. Still, the popularity of Apple's flagship handsets is something impressive in itself, amounting to huge sales numbers every year. The iPhone 15 series features four different models, which include the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, and iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. The Pro models come with new Titanium builds, as well as the new USB-C ports. The phones also feature the new A17 Pro chipset from Apple, which features some promising performance upgrades including ray tracing technology for gaming. Apple even went so far as to announce a handful of console ports for the iPhone 15 Pro series, which include the Resident Evil 4 Remake, as well as Resident Evil Village. Meanwhile, the "regular" iPhone 15 and 15 Plus count as the more wallet-friendly models in Apple's 2023 lineup. They do adapt some newer hardware, and in addition to USB-C the iPhone 15 also features the Dynamic Island camera cutout, as well as an upgraded 48MP main camera sensor, a considerable improvement over the 12MP lens that Apple has used for so long in previous iPhone models. One caveat however is that the base models run on last year's A16 Bionic chip, instead of the A17 Pro as with the Pro models. With all that said, USB-C is a step in the right direction for Apple, and we can only hope that the company adopts more competitive hardware on its future handsets. Buyers can grab the new iPhone 15 series starting at £799 for the base model iPhone 15, and £999 for the iPhone 15 Pro. Read the full article

Hackers can steal cryptographic keys by video-recording power LEDs 60 feet away
Enlarge / Left: a smart card reader processing the encryption key of an inserted smart card. Right: a surveillance camera video records the reader's power LED from 60 feet away.
Nassi et al.
Researchers have devised a novel attack that recovers the secret encryption keys stored in smart cards and smartphones by using cameras in iPhones or commercial surveillance systems to video record power LEDs that show when the card reader or smartphone is turned on.
The attacks enable a new way to exploit two previously disclosed side channels, a class of attack that measures physical effects that leak from a device as it performs a cryptographic operation. By carefully monitoring characteristics such as power consumption, sound, electromagnetic emissions, or the amount of time it takes for an operation to occur, attackers can assemble enough information to recover secret keys that underpin the security and confidentiality of a cryptographic algorithm.
Side-channel exploitation made simple
As Wired reported in 2008, one of the oldest known side channels was in a top-secret encrypted teletype terminal that the US Army and Navy used during World War II to transmit communications that couldn’t be read by German and Japanese spies. To the surprise of the Bell Labs engineers who designed the terminal, it caused readings from a nearby oscilloscope each time an encrypted letter was entered. While the encryption algorithm in the device was sound, the electromagnetic emissions emanating from the device were enough to provide a side channel that leaked the secret key.
Side channels have been a fact of life ever since, with new ones being found regularly. The recently discovered side channels tracked as Minerva and Hertzbleed came to light in 2019 and 2022, respectively. Minerva was able to recover the 256-bit secret key of a US-government-approved smart card by measuring timing patterns in a cryptographic process known as scalar multiplication. Hertzbleed allowed an attacker to recover the private key used by the post-quantum SIKE cryptographic algorithm by measuring the power consumption of the Intel or AMD CPU performing certain operations. Given the use of time measurement in one and power measurement in the other, Minerva is known as a timing side channel, and Hertzbleed can be considered a power side channel.
On Tuesday, academic researchers unveiled new research demonstrating attacks that provide a novel way to exploit these types of side channels. The first attack uses an Internet-connected surveillance camera to take a high-speed video of the power LED on a smart card reader—or of an attached peripheral device—during cryptographic operations. This technique allowed the researchers to pull a 256-bit ECDSA key off the same government-approved smart card used in Minerva. The other allowed the researchers to recover the private SIKE key of a Samsung Galaxy S8 phone by training the camera of an iPhone 13 on the power LED of a USB speaker connected to the handset, in a similar way to how Hertzbleed pulled SIKE keys off Intel and AMD CPUs.
Power LEDs are designed to indicate when a device is turned on. They typically cast a blue or violet light that vary in brightness and color depending on the power consumption of the device they are connected to.
youtube
Video-based cryptanalysis.
There are limitations to both attacks that make them unfeasible in many (but not all) real-world scenarios (more on that later). Despite this, the published research is groundbreaking because it provides an entirely new way to facilitate side-channel attacks. Not only that, but the new method removes the biggest barrier holding back previously existing methods from exploiting side channels: the need to have instruments such as an oscilloscope, electric probes, or other objects touching or being in proximity to the device being attacked.
In Minerva's case, the device hosting the smart card reader had to be compromised for researchers to collect precise-enough measurements. Hertzbleed, by contrast, didn’t rely on a compromised device but instead took 18 days of constant interaction with the vulnerable device to recover the private SIKE key. To attack many other side channels, such as the one in the World War II encrypted teletype terminal, attackers must have specialized and often expensive instruments attached or near the targeted device.
The video-based attacks presented on Tuesday reduce or completely eliminate such requirements. All that’s required to steal the private key stored on the smart card is an Internet-connected surveillance camera that can be as far as 62 feet away from the targeted reader. The side-channel attack on the Samsung Galaxy handset can be performed by an iPhone 13 camera that’s already present in the same room.

Problem Solved! Microphone Not Working on My Phone
You're not alone if you recently bought the Hollyland Lark M2 Duo Combo Wireless Lavalier Mic eager to begin recording on your Android device only to discover that it doesn't connect as planned! Despite being a plug-and-play device for Android, some users have had trouble pairing the Hollyland Lark M2 Duo Combo Wireless Microphone with specific handsets, such as Google Pixel devices.
To ensure you get the most out of your setup and are capturing audio with ease, we'll break down some essential solutions for troubleshooting your Hollyland Lark M2 Duo Combo Kit with Google or Android smartphones in this article.
Troubleshooting Tips for the Hollyland Lark M2 Duo Combo Wireless Lavalier Mic on Android
1. Turn On OTG in Settings
Direct communication between Android devices and USB devices is made possible by USB OTG (On-The-Go). The first thing to do if the Hollyland Lark M2 Duo 2-Person Wireless Combo isn't working is to enable OTG.
Make sure OTG is toggled on by going to Settings > Connected Devices > OTG on your phone.
OTG settings differ from device to device, so if you can't find it under Connected Devices, use the search bar in your phone's settings to find it fast.
2. Activate Wired Microphone Option in Your Camera App
The wired microphone feature isn't always enabled on Android smartphones, such as the Google Pixel.
Go to the video mode in your camera app. In the video mode, go to Settings and choose Wired Microphone as the source of audio. This will allow the Hollyland Lark M2 Duo Combo Wireless Microphone to be used by the camera app in place of the built-in microphone.
Although it can be annoying, some users find that this setting must be manually activated each time the app is reopened. This guarantees that the microphone works as intended.
3. Confirm Permissions
It's crucial to make sure the right permissions are established. Verify that the camera or recording app you're using has permission to access the microphone and external devices by going to Settings > Apps > Permissions. This will enable correct interaction between your device and the Hollyland Lark M2 Combo Kit.
4. Test Both Microphones in the Duo Combo Kit
Make sure both wireless lavalier microphones are working by testing each one separately if you're using the Hollyland Lark M2 Duo Combo. Checking to see if the issue is limited to one microphone is worthwhile because one may have connection problems while the other functions properly.
5. Check for Firmware Updates or Try Another Recording App
It's a good idea to make sure the most recent firmware update is updated on the Hollyland Lark M2 because it can enhance compatibility and functionality with newer devices.
On the other hand, certain Android camera apps work better with external microphones. Excellent substitutes are Open Camera and Filmic Pro, which offer greater control over external audio input and frequently recognize the Hollyland Lark M2 Duo Combo Wireless Microphone automatically once it is connected.
Why Choose the Hollyland Lark M2 Duo Combo Kit?
Because of its multiple microphones for two-person interviews, high-quality audio, and simple wireless setup, the Hollyland Lark M2 Combo Kit has become a favorite among video creators. It's a flexible option for novices and experts alike, with numerous features crammed into a compact receiver and microphone transmitter. And while setting it up with Android may require a few steps initially, once it’s connected, it delivers professional-quality audio for vlogs, interviews, and other on-the-go recordings.
