I have heard this sentiment / meme for years, getting brought up again and again, I feel I have some energy to reclaim
Our problem isn't that "economic theory" is inherently greedy or broken, it's that our government regulations are divorced from economic theory entirely. Economic theory is like physics, it's not a moral thing, it's a law of science, supply and demand.
I got an econ-math degree and became a socialist, as to all the bloodless leeches who studied economics and became libertarians, that's really a personal shortcoming. I'm an FDR progressive, Green New Deal Ride Or Die.
But even the most prominent conservative economist in the USA (Larry Summers) is saying we need to raise taxes on billionaires and regulate business more heavily, it's a question of political will, not economic theory. All economists are screaming at the bus driver to hit the brakes or steer to avoid the upcoming cliff, and the GOP driver is like "hey fuck you goddamn uppity socialist scientists, driving over this cliff won't be so bad because this steering wheel has an airbag"
do we even have a government when it comes to billionaires? Zero political will to follow the advice of economists but let's throw them under the bus along with all the othet scientists, fuck the learned aristocracy right? hey wait a second
the knee jerk stuff will be having us hate our common man, economics is actually on our side, we just don't fuck with compost-based bio batteries yet and we should. (yes you can get plastic from compost. From compost you can also get glucose for sugar batteries. Sugar batteries are 10x as powerful as lithium ion. Having pre-charged bio batteries at refill stations enables EV drivers to swap out into a charged battery in potentially under 20 seconds, faster than a typical gas refill. This is just one small idea of many for a sustainable future- again apply this idea to shipping and we can have sustainable shipping)
Our problem is fascism, racism, and lacking empathy. Fossil fuels are choking out our future, and the dirty monopolies are strangling clean tech and then lying like "oh the economics just aren't there for EVs" when oil and gas gets trillions in subsidies, far more handout than clean tech. If all historical federal subsidies were removed and the playing field was actually level, we'd be living in the Jetsons future next year. But we can't have nice things, because petrofascists/billionaires are on welfare handout checks, always have been, but they get to masquerade as "pure economists" and pretend that petrofascism is good for any economy except Charles Koch and Warren Buffet's bank accounts, when again, we give more in welfare to corporate america than we do to human america. it's fucked, literally half of all USA oil and gas companies would go bankrupt tomorrow if it weren't for oil subsidies aka welfare checks to oil companies.
as someone who's studied physics, economics, and psychology, I want to remind people, economics isn't just "whatever GOP/billionaires want," it's an actual testable, verifiable science; our current whole corrupt system is based on monopoly power and yielding to monopoly, but that's not even an economic system, beyond de facto fascism.
Economists are begging us to regulate emissions more tightly, follow Robert Reich, it's not the fault of economists or any subset of scientists we're where we are, we need scientists to keep our future bright...what is polluting our future is monopoly, fascism, and tyranny...and greedy CEOs more beholden to the next earnings call than his kids' future
