This was my first fic back into the DN fandom and honestly I think it should be everyone else's too 🙏 My friends tell me they're getting back into DN and I immediately recc them this fic.

The problem is that 'malfunction' turns out to be a newly sentient super computer called Kira. L disconnects him from the rest of the installation to begin a historic interrogation, but Kira might not be as defanged as L believes.

If you can't tell by now I am trash for TrashKing's fics—I can't help it I'm straight up in love with their Light. I would recc literally all of their fics but we don't got time for that, there's over fifty. This fic is fluffy and funny and really interesting, and it was a super fun read! I liked the inclusion of Ryuk and Light's very wholesome and yet still very Light™ reactions to human experiences :)

I also just like it when L and Light bicker and fight and they do that a lot in this fic. A lot. It's great. I can't explain what else I particularly like about this fic without spoiling it, so you're just gonna have to read it.

Rated M. L knows that Light Yagami is guilty. And he is forced to accept that he will never be able to prove it.

So, just this once, he decides to break his principles and go above the law. He kidnaps Light and takes him to Wammy's house.

He's sure that having the kids interact with a real-life mass murderer will be a very educational experience indeed.

Or: Light is Kira, L is sick of how easily manipulated the police are, and he secretly wants to see what will happen if he forces Light into a domestic situation with children just as intelligent as he is.

I am a person who really enjoys L Wins AU, so L yoinking Light from Japan just to hide him away in Wammy's to try and redeem (?) him all while Light kicks and screams is something that just speaks to me personally 🙏 L just wants to not kill his friend and Light just wants to continue to commit crimes, top tier story on God.

Rated T. Gone Girl AU. L has moved his lovely, vile, entirely batshit husband out of their beautiful Brooklyn brownstone into a Missouri suburb, then left him to his own devices. He is under the impression that this is going to end well.

This fic is beautifully written and it scratches that itch I have for malicious antagonism between established lawlight. These bitches are SO toxic and I love them. I really enjoyed the different perspectives just so you can see that both of them are unreliable narrators.

After a night that ruined his life, left him crippled and spurred forth multiple failed suicide attempts, Light decides his best course of action is putting himself in the most dangerous situation he can think of and making grotesque gangsters do his dirty work. He slips into the sight of Ryuk, infamous for fucking male escorts, then killing them in a brutal blur. Or so those dark web message boards say.

Light’s fate is in Gods hands… or maybe a creature far crueler has plans for him.

I LOVE THIS FIC. I ADORE IT. It's dark and gritty, but as someone deranged about human (?) Ryuk and his and Light's dynamic, this fic is wonderful. The noncon is not between Ryuk and Light, but the descriptions are explicit so be aware of that. Both Light and Ryuk have my entire heart here no lie.

This fic revolves in my brain at 3x microwave speeds, okay? I am studying this fic like it is the scrolls of old, alright? I hold unhinged amounts of feralness for this fic. It's a smutty little character study, and it has imprinted itself onto the back of my eyelids forever. This fic addresses every reason that I'm so obsessed with Ryuk and Light's relationship. SO GOOD 🔥

This fic is a TRIP I tell you, but a very good one. Matsuda's characterization in this is so much fun. This fic is about the journey of grief and all the madness and moral contemplation that comes along with shooting the greatest mass murderer of all time who was also your best friend that you're in love with. Very good read.

There's some extra angst in the background with L's controlling tendencies (there are cameras in that hotel room. I feel it in my bones.) and his and B's rough history, but honestly I think that makes it even more interesting. Top tier fic. 👌

Oh , wow, I'm so flattered! I'm very happy it sounds appealing to you <33 This work is a huge passion project of mine so I'm always glad to talk more and more about it, especially since there are many aspects occurring in the background (such as the alternate fates of the main players of the Trojan Conflict) which I cannot properly cover or even explain within the events of the novel itself.

That said: 1) If you mean tags as in ao3 - unfortunately, this work isn't on ao3 my friend :( As I said above, these are elements and concepts in the greek mythology based-fantasy novel I'm currently writing (the concept of which I outlined here in the introductory post of my novel concept!) As for wanting to read whatever writing I currently have available: I currently have three fics available on ao3 that are written in my Pursuing Daybreak verse!

The Prince and Princess series deal with a young Apollo and Artemis and the many consequences they face after Apollo has slain Python. The two works uploaded right now are Exeunt Phoebus Apollo which covers the murder trial of Python and Manent Apanchomene Artemis which covers the intense feelings of helplessness and alienation Artemis experiences after Apollo returns from his banishment and is completely changed. Both of these have themes of family, grief and relationship exploration at their heart.

The third bit of writing I have up is quite outdated but does cover the immediate aftermath of Hyacinthus' death. It's called A Petal Falleth and features Apollo making one of those Big Silly Decisions that have completely unintended but extremely important consequences: namely, instead of the larkspurs being made of Hyacinthus' spilt blood, Apollo anchors the boy's soul to the flowers so Thanatos wouldn't take him. Like the Dawn is also set in this world but because it is nsfw in nature, I wouldn't recommend it as easily as the other three bits of writing. If you don't mind the whole naked men thing though, I'd definitely suggest reading Like the Dawn for a better idea of what my current writing is like (along with eventually getting to see characters like Hector, Andromache and Cassandra/Helenus) Like the Dawn's themes are also different to the other three works with it focusing more on the power dynamics of a god/mortal relationship, exploring masculinity and masculine sexuality and self discovery.

The running theme here, of course, is that all of these bits of writing are centered on Apollo/Artemis or Hyacinth because my novel itself is centered around them. There are, of course, other important characters and figures like Eros, Psyche, Penthesilea and Iaso (one of Asclepius' daughters) but while there is the definite presence of characters from the Trojan War they most certainly aren't at the center of the novel (and the ones that are aren't the Greeks but rather the Trojans i.e Hector, Alexander, Andromache, Cassandra, Helenus, Aeneas, so on and so forth.)

2) The basis of the apocalypse in my work is cosmological! Due to Apollo's err-- untimely departure, there's no longer anyone maintaining the axis of the heavens or the navel of the earth. Because of this, Erebus - whose darkness is usually kept firmly in the spaces between the realms - begins to spill out into both the heavens and the earth. The beasts of Erebus (referring primarily to the Seven Curses - Old Age, Misery, Deceit, Violence etc etc) consume, torment and destroy whatever is inside of Erebus' darkness and Ithaca, as one of the islands on the far edge of the world, was one of the very first places that were devoured in this manner. Odysseus was visiting the Argives at the time for a festival and had left the pregnant Penelope at home since he didn't want her to suffer through the voyage in discomfort. He only finds out about the destruction of Ithaca after it had already been consumed when Athena personally interrupts a feast to warn both him and Diomedes. Needless to say, Odysseus, like everyone else, assumes that everyone on Ithaca has died and thusly is a very, very different man in terms of humour and comport. A part of him still stubbornly clings to the belief that Penelope managed to escape - that she was smart and resourceful enough to see the end approaching and do her best to escape - but that doesn't stop him from being dour for the majority of the time. Diomedes does his best to keep his spirits up in the meantime. Without him around, Odysseus is something of a black hole when it comes to the oppressiveness of his discontent though he does manage to lighten up when in the company of Helen, Clytemnestra and even Menelaus on occasion.

I just found this blog and I am SO happy you are adressing things without condeming people whose faorite ship is Merthur. A lot of the time I cannot be included in spaces that talk about these kinda things in the Merlin fandom because of people talking about it judging anyone who likes Merthur. As someone who enjoys Gwen and also ships Arwen (Though not nearly as much my borderline aroace brain only gives me like one couple to fixate on per like five years) I love this. Most merthur creaters I have seen (And I have not seen many besides tumblr and some discords I will admit and Tumblr doesnt tent to recomend me racistgwen stuff) treat her well But I still remember the time I asked for Merthur fics that treat gwen nicely and one person just gave me their fic WHERE GWEN DIES IN CHILDBIRTH for no reason in a pretty disrepectful way and I was left going WTF. I stopped reading it.

I've been lucky to avoid a lot of the racism I think.

I am happy that you are enjoying this space! This page was definitely created to try and bring all Merlin fans (regardless of who they ship) into raising awareness about racism and antiBlackness.

Unfortunately fandom can be messy and there have been many times when my posts have been accused of being hateful towards certain ships (particularly Merthur) despite the fact that there have been discussions about racism and not the actual ship itself. It is also why I constantly put disclaimers that certain posts are not denouncing certain ships or shippers. Fandom would be a lot more productive in tackling antiBlackness if there was not a constant need for discussions about racism to be put down to 'ship wars.'

I am glad that you have been able to avoid a lot of the racism. Unfortunately fics and posts which treat Gwen negatively are common in the fandom so I am sorry you had that experience.

Regarding your comment about other fans judging people who ship Merthur, of course I am unaware of the details so it depends on what exactly you have been seeing, but I think it is also important to view things from the side of fans of color and have been at the end of racism in the Merlin fandom.

Of course this isn't isolated to just Merthur shippers, there are plenty of other people who are involved in racism, but they do dominate the fandom and unfortunately a significant amount of racism has come from them (as you have already mentioned with your example of a fic recommendation). With that in mind, it is understandable why there may be some judgement or apprehension there.

This generally isn't related to ships, rather that a big part of a community have been known to engage in racist activities. Again though, this is not all Merthur shippers, nor is it isolated to just them.

There has been a lot of uncomfortable-ness when talking about Merthur shippers and how they are in the fandom because (as mentioned before) many fans cannot see past their 'this is hating on my ship and the characters I love' blinkers.

So I think it is important in trying to understand the perspective of POC, particularly if they are acting a certain way towards certain ships or shippers. I obviously cannot speak for everyone but it could well be a response to racism they have experienced or seen.

There are a lot of Merthur shippers who do partake in anti-racism in the fandom. Who do love Gwen and challenge anyone who is racist towards her. Hopefully this is something that will continue to spread amongst them.

But yes, this page doesn't condemn Merthur shippers! They are welcome here and we can tackle racism together!

I tried organizing my thoughts as best I could. It’s long so I’m gonna slap it under a read more

For starters, this fic is actually a polished up excerpt from my first ever fic! It was a fusion of Sayonara Wild Hearts with Ace Attorney. I have been so brave about resisting the urge to delete or rehaul that fic entirely out of Cringe (writing self conscious moments)

In that fic, this chapter is an interlude taking place irl before the big confrontation. But as u can see it can stand alone with no knowledge of that bigger fic, so I’d wanted to show this bit off hehehe. The title of this fic is from the game’s prologue scene also

The main theme is that Phoenix is not doing so great! Bc I think so often about “Looking back, it was a pretty dark time in my life” as well as all the possible ways other characters Find Out about the disbarment

The theme is also tied to loneliness and loss bc it’s inspired by the titular song Sayonara Wild Heart (boppin song by itself, highly recommend) and boy does Phoenix have a lot of that going on in 7yg

As adults, it’s kinda common that some friendships can drift apart just bc of the busy-ness of Being an Adult with Bills and Responsibilities. Not that it necessarily means the End of that relationship; it can be easy with certain people to pick things up as if the time had never passed. But that requires effort that I think a depressed Phoenix cannot often muster

Like I said to your comment on the fic, I wanted to touch on what it’s like for Edgeworth to be getting this information and not being able to do anything about it. Sometimes you can’t just drop everything, unfortunately, or more frequently it’s a struggle trying to figure out what to even Say to someone dealing with something so Specific and complicated

Kinda related to that, I feel like I don’t see a lot of Delayed emotional reactions in fics. Which is fair, since these games are cartoony and almost a little campy hehe. It’s easy and expedient to show a character immediately reacting intensely to a big shock or something. But, maybe I’m an outlier here lol, in my personal life when I’ve gotten sudden Bad News it kinda takes a while (about an hour or so) before it like Really hits and a much Stronger emotional reaction happens

I think Edgeworth would be similar. It’s p commonly accepted that he’s buried himself into work to avoid Emotions and such, but it only lasts for so long

At the same time, looking back I feel like I overplayed phoenix’s emotional breakdown in the beginning of the fic >.> rookie characterization mistake… and I kind of wonder if I made Edgeworth a little Too well adjusted in the second part lol. Characterization is big to me (Would he say that? 🤔), so it’s something I’m pretty critical about in my own writing, for better or worse ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But I like what I did for Phoenix’s POV section. I think an overlooked aspect from the games is Phoenix’s bitterness and rudeness lol, so I figure those are prominent during a depressive episode

A couple miscellaneous details to close this out: I specifically chose the dates—the Edgeworth-POV scene taking place the Monday after the Gramarye trial (which happened on a Friday), presumably when the Bar Association hearing takes place and he loses his badge. Then the second part is the anniversary of the day Mia was murdered, so it’s a little something extra for Phoenix to be sad about (-:

Okay, if you're looking at this and thinking of switching to a different word processor here's some information that might be helpful. If you're looking for free, your computer/phone's note taking app should work fine for writing, but it's not my preferred. Discord is also free and you can start your own server to house your writing in with different channels for each chapter or work, however you want and what works for you. Microsoft Word/Libre office are going to give you an experience pretty similar to GDocs (imo, obvs), so if you're really liking your workflow in GDocs, do a trial of either and see which you like best/works best with your OS. But if you're looking to get some software for writing specifically at a single device, I cannot recommend Scrivener enough. Unfortunately, it doesn't have an easy way to write on one device and then pick up on another (unless this has changed recently, but last I checked, capability was pretty iffy. I'm homebound rn so I only write on the computer and haven't had need to check) However, despite the lack of on-the-go functionality like that, there's honestly nothing I've found better for writing. Scrivener is made to be a writing software. It's made to house longform projects, and projects with a lot of metadata and references and images. It's a file with a lot of word files inside of it, essentially. Here's what my current fic looks like in Scrivener:

All of my chapters are new text documents for easier reference for myself, and uploading to AO3 (though, formatting is an issue between the two). I have files for background information that's important for me to reference, every named character, language, maps, and extraneous scenes I get in my head but may or may not make it into the fic itself. AND one of the coolest things a friend showed me a while back (thanks @mrsd-writes!) is the ability to look at two documents at the same time in the window. Here you can see the general setup i have when writing recently, which is my WiP chapter and the map of the region I've embellished from the BotW game map (though I changed view to ch1 to avoid spoilers lol)

As you can see you can just drop images into a document in scrivener to have as reference. I know @woulduknowmore somehow put the interactive BotW map from ZeldaDungeon in her document, so it has some pretty cool capabilities.

Anyway, Scrivener is fantastic for writing projects where you end up with a whole bunch of extra files, or if you want to break up the work by chapter or section and still have it easily on hand. You can change what the application itself looks like (as you can see, I have it in blue, it's a setting). And once you've completed a work and you want to get it ready for sending out/publishing it can compile it for you pretty decently -- I used it to write my thesis as it has a whole setting for papers. You'll find what program works for your style and needs -- I just know that Scrivener can seem intimidating or possibly strange so I thought I'd say a bit about why I love it so much and only use it. I'm by no means a whiz with it, but if you want to try it and have questions I can see if I can help!

Vash and Wolf by Scaryliterary [Multi-Chapter]: Yes, I’m recommending a college AU. But the characters are dead on, the found family vibe is amazing, the dramatic scenes are gripping, and the major plot elements are reproduced in a surprising way. Rated M, mainly for disturbingly self-destructive moments, I think.  Handmade Artisanal AU #1.

How to Sleep Above the Sky by hibem. This AU is just a hair’s breadth away from canon; it takes place among the Gung Ho Guns on a satellite above a Gunsmoke where the Fall never happened. It’s one of the most poetic and sensory things I’ve ever read, so I’ve read it at least 6 times. Vash is adorable. Beware of sad ending. Handmade Artisanal AU #2.

Tied for Third:

For Good by Celesma. Set in mangaverse after Wolfwood rescues Vash from the ark. What if Vash had gone to the Orphanage with him? The dialogue is amazing. This is where I get the headcanon that Wolfwood’s self-hating inner voice calls him “Nicky.” [Has NSFW moments].

The Only Nice Thing That Follows, by hellogaywatson [Multi-Chapter; in progress]: I recently realized how much my sense of Vash and Wolfwood’s interactions was inspired by this fic. Especially the wonderful quote that Wolfwood’s smoking is doing the world a public service. Probably the funniest, weirdest set of tags I’ve seen in Trigun fandom. Rated explicit, but nothing explicit actually happens in the first 8 chapters; I’d rate it T.

There’s this one ridiculously long paragraph that’s a thoughtful meta/character analysis, from Wolfwood’s point of view. “You love him in part because someone has to and you do believe that no one else really does, because real love requires real sight and you are maybe the only one who has ever really seen him. …you love him in part because you have appointed yourself the emissary of humanity and it is therefore yours to close the terrible gap between his love for humanity and their hatred of him. …But mostly you just love him because he’s lovable, because you cannot help yourself any more than an animal can help savaging itself when caught in a trap. Just Straight Up Smut

The Confessional Experience: OK, not so much a confessional, more like one of those free-standing wardrobes. Part banter, part ridiculous situation, part smut, with a funny ending.

Life on Gunsmoke by JojoLightningFingers. Involves: Weird plant biology, telepathy, scars, religious musings, and Livio.

Paradise (chapter 1). What if Wolfwood survived in Paradise, and ended up telepathically connected with Vash? Basically just well-written telepathy-PWP; the whole resurrection bit doesn’t make much sense.

Tiggy Malvern writes good smut. My favorite is Balance. It’s been an inspiration for me and one of my writing buddies.

Untitled by Black-Quadrant. Mutual pining and sexual tension in a very different way. Vivid in every sense, not just vision. Black-Quadrant may be my favorite Trigun smut writer.

Kamen Rider Ex-Aid

This is what I would recommend if you’re interested in the tension aspect of enemies-to-lovers. Watching this made me go ‘wait I need to increase the homoeroticism in my fake show by at least 300%’

The premise for this is that people are getting infected by sentient computer viruses so a bunch of doctors have to transform into video game characters to heal their patients. (Yes it is as ridiculous as it sounds. they’ll be like “it’s time to perform a surgery” and then go beat up a guy in a funny costume)

The main character is a former competitive gamer turned doctor intern who is just really doing his best to help people while also wrangling three other doctor Kamen Riders with enormous trust issues and martyr complexes, and also trying to avoid this one game disease guy who is weirdly obsessed with fighting him.

The homoeroticism in this comes in the form of people pushing people against walls in the middle of arguments, villains that spend way too much time thinking about the main character in a “nobody is allowed to touch him because i will be the one to defeat him” way, going from calling someone your ‘fighting partner’ (opponent) to ‘fighting partner’ (best friend and trusted ally), cradling a dying person in your arms, etc.. Also one guy transforms into a motorcycle and cannot fight unless someone rides him, I am not joking.

Kamen Rider Blade

This series is enemies-to-homoerotic friends in more of a tragic star-crossed lovers way and gave me inspiration for Cloud and Murasaki more towards the end of their show.

The premise is that 10,000 years ago there was a Battle Royale type fight between the Undead which are the immortal representatives of 53 species, each of which matches a card in the typical deck. The Human Undead won, allowing humans to flourish on earth, and the rest were all sealed up in their corresponding card. Now they’ve all gotten released. The main character works for a research company trying to seal them all back up, and one of the other major characters is an Undead who lives with a widowed woman and her young daughter as he tries to understand humans.

The homoeroticism in this is like “I don’t know why I trust you, I just do.” “I hate everyone in the world except like two singular people, but you have won my trust and affection.” “Literally everyone we meet says that we should be enemies and that I should destroy you, but I would fight fate itself if it means we can both live happily.” “I would rather risk letting the world be destroyed than kill you.”

Kamen Rider Drive

This one isn’t the high up on the rec list despite being the first one to inspire Cloud and Murasaki because I haven’t actually seen most of it. I saw like 5 or so episodes towards the end plus some of the post-canon content and got obsessed with two of the side characters (one of which I would say is canonically gay for the other one in the post-canon audio drama, unless you can think of a way that saying “I can’t deny that one of my hidden desires is to go on a date with him, even though he’s a boy” is platonic)

Additionally, the main character has a guy who really wants to fight him and the lesser villain trio has weird tensions of the girl and guy both really wanting their leader’s attention and being jealous over each other.

This one is about a police officer in a ‘special investigations unit’ that deals with weird going-ons with this robot race that slows down time and is trying to take over humanity or something like that

Kamen Rider Revice

I also haven’t seen this one but I know people who have (with mixed opinions on the show). The writer of this show originally wanted to make the main Rider a woman but the company shut him down. However, that does mean that this show has a major female character with her own character arc and homoerotic rival (and from what I hear, she is the best part of this show). This is currently airing though it’s almost over

It’s about a family who runs a bath house and fights using their inner demons (and fights against their inner demons sometimes). I’ve only seen a couple bits and pieces of this but the parents of this family are wholesome heterosexuals and the sister definitely seemed like she was trying to go on a date with her rival-turned-ally.

Super Sentai Donbrothers

I also haven’t seen this, but I know at least three people whose taste in media I trust who love this. I’m reccing this one because it’s also based in Japanese fairytales, specifically centered around Momotaro. Characters include guy who was found in a peach and is unable to lie and has a homoerotic rivalry/secret identity thing with a villain where they’re friends out of their suits and enemies in their suits; teenage manga artist accused of plagerism; wife guy; wanted fugitive; and anti-money poet

Every time I hear about this show I wonder how on earth they can pack so much into one 20 minute episode. This one is also still airing

FAQ

What is the WIP Big Bang? Good question! This is a Big Bang with one goal in mind: to clean out your drafts folder. These are stories that were unfinished for whatever reason, that authors returned to and completed, and the art that goes with them!

Do I need a Livejournal/Dreamwidth/AO3/etc. account to participate? No! You don’t have to have an account on anything to participate, though you will need to have somewhere to post your finished work. Having one or more accounts will help for you to follow what is going on with the bang (we crosspost to Livejournal, Dreamwidth, Tumblr, and Twitter at the moment), but they are not required to participate. You can always leave comments anonymously or with an opensource ID.

Will I get emails about the bang? We do send out some emails, mostly for snippets and art claims and to ensure communication between authors and artists, but please do NOT rely on getting an email to remind you of due dates. We currently do not keep an updated email list of participants, so we only send individual emails as needed rather than mass emails.

However, email is the fastest way to communicate with the mods. If you have any questions or are having trouble communicating with your artist/author, please do email us! We will do our best to respond quickly.

Is there a minimum word count? 7,500 words, but the sky's the limit, right?

What do you mean by minimum word count to enter? This is a WIP Big Bang, therefore we ask you to have at least 500 words of your story drafted when you enter. It's okay if you have posted a few chapters of your fic already (you never know when the muse deserts you, after all), we just require you to refrain from posting more until posting begins here.

Is there anything not allowed? As long as you wrote it and you want to finish it, you're welcome to participate. Just bear in mind that original work is only allowed on AO3 if it has a fannish connection and might make it hard for artists to work with. But we'll make a dedicated post for that if there will be any.

What are 'Check Ins’? These are a way for us to see what you've been up to and for you to make sure you're still on track. It will give you a little nudge/reminder if you need it, but they are not compulsory.

What are the snippets requirements? In order to allow the artists to make art for the story they claimed, we require you to supply three snippets from your fic, between 500 – 1500 words each. The snippets will be sent to the artist after they have claimed your story. They're to help the artist match your story for artwork the best way he or she possibly can. It’s helpful to choose scenes or parts of scenes that you feel best represent your fic, but don’t feel like they have to be perfect to be submitted. Along with the snippets, we will send your artist the basic fic info and your email, so the two of you can collaborate more if you would both like.

What are the rough drafts requirements? For the rough drafts, stories should be at least 80% complete. You will not have to turn them in to us, just assure us that you are at that point. Anything less is at the discretion of the mods and those authors should speak to one of the mods asap.

What is, and do I need, a beta? A beta is basically a person who goes over your work to make sure that there are no spelling/grammatical errors and they can even be of assistance in helping you with story lines, etc. It is highly recommended that a beta looks over your work before posting. If you are having trouble finding a beta, try this post.

Where can I post my fic/art? Stories and art can be posted to your own personal journal, tumblr, ff-net, AO3, or wherever you like. For those of you with AO3 accounts, we will set up a collection that will go live on the day of the posting. Also, we've enabled moderated posting to the comm (Livejournal and Dreamwidth) for members. We will post a template for posting artwork and stories to the comm closer to the posting date.

If you don’t currently have an AO3 account but would like one, you can contact the mods for an invitation code to see if they have any available. You can also add yourself to the AO3 Invites Request queue.

How do I know when to post? Posting will be tiered; you'll each get your own posting date that you and your artist will decide on together. There will probably be four fics, plus art, posting per day between August 8th and September 30th. The post with date claims will go up on July 23rd and you'll have to choose your date by August 1st.

If you want to post your story in chapters on AO3 or your own blog (or wherever you usually post), you may do so starting August 1st. However, posting has to be finished by your chosen posting date to the comm. One of the things we're hoping to do with the posted dates is to give everybody on the comm a little bragging time in the spotlight. You know, "this story was incomplete for this long, but I finished this sucker." If you don't have time to post on your chosen posting date, you can queue up a post ahead of time and we can post it on the date you picked. Either way works for us. Art will be due on the chosen posting date to the comm.

Is there a minimum/maximum requirement for my art? There is no strict minimum, but we do ask artists to remember that the authors are writing a minimum of 7,500 words and your artwork should reflect that. You can do anything you like, including banners, wallpapers, icons, mixes, vids, gif sets, picspams, etc. Suggested guidelines for art are 500x500px (or equivalent of smaller pieces like banner + spacers, cover + icons, etc.) for traditional art, digital art, and manips; 2 minutes for vids; 10 songs + cover art for mixes; and 6 images for gif sets and picspams. We also ask that when you are in contact with the author, you work with them to see if there is anything specific they would like (i.e. a wallpaper, book cover, etc.). The art is your work, but having ideas doesn't hurt!

What are 'art claims'? The claims are when anonymous summaries of the story go up for artists to choose from. It is based on a 'first come, first served' basis and artists may choose up to three potential stories (in case their first choice is unavailable). If there are more stories than artists, there will be a second round of claims wherein artists may choose a second story to work with. And on until all stories are claimed for art.

If a fic up for claiming is rated explicit (R, NC-17, etc.), please only claim the story if you are over 18 years of age. Some authors may be uncomfortable working with underage artists on explicit works. We do not verify ages in any way for the bang, so this is solely on the honor system.

Can I get an extension? Community extensions may be given in the event that the majority of the authors/artists need one. They may also be given individually under certain circumstances, but this must be discussed with the mods and will only be a short extension for posting. If you are certain that you won’t be able to finish your story in time, please let us know by June 13th.

What do I do if I have problems or concerns about my author/artist? Sometimes authors and artists do not get along and this may cause problems with working together. If this happens to be the case with you, please email the mods and we will try to do what we can so that everyone has a chance to have fun at WIP Big Bang!

If you have not heard from your author/artist in some time after trying to contact them, you can reach out to us via email and we will try to get in touch with them for you.

Can I drop out? We have high hopes that everybody who signs up can actually finish the round and share in the joy of the reveal with us, but real life can unfortunately get in the way and we completely understand! If you feel like you just cannot finish in time and no amount of assistance from us can help you, just let us know by July 13th (if at all possible).

Is it possible to be banned? We do have a banned users list. We hope to use this to encourage participants who are having issues to communicate with the mods. We want to help you! The way the ban works is that participants, either authors and artists, will be banned for dropping out without notifying a mod. This means that anyone who has not posted or talked to a mod by the time the posting period ends will be banned. Dropping out is not in and of itself a banning offense, so please do not panic if you have to drop out! We understand that there are many reasons you may need to drop, and we want to work with you.

Bans will last one round or until the issue is resolved, whichever comes first. To resolve a ban, authors will have to finish and post the story they signed up with and artists will have to finish and post the art for the story they claimed. Three bans will result in a permanent ban from the bang.</lj-cut>

WAITT!! do you have any fanfic recs? PLEASE IT’S SO HARD TO FIND GOOD UT FANFICS! Also any dancetale fanfics specifically?

Sure! I was actually midway through compiling a rec list anyway--I feel like my more Sans-centric first arc of WWU is fairly short, so it might leave people wanting more Sans-centric gen h/c fic. Here are some you may not have seen before, since they're all under 10,000 hits:

Memories in the Void (Kuma_in_Pink): ~90k, ongoing. This fic begins with an ordinary afternoon out going terribly wrong, and proceeds to have the classic "cast must view one character's important memories" trope in a really interesting way, going from Sans's childhood to (presumably) genocide runs and finally post-pacifist. Really confronts some questions that are underexplored in the Undertale fandom, I feel, and the author is really nice. Please go leave them a comment if you check this one out! But, uh, probably not a good fit for big fans of Asgore. This is Soriel, and I believe the only shipping fic in this rec post.

remember a second ago (nilchance): ~4k, oneshot. Papyrus, as an intangible phantom, follows his brother through a genocide run after his own death at the hands of the human. Really well done, and a great Papyrus and Sans study.

Baby Spinach (dotYoo): ~40k, complete, first in a short series. I finished this fic for the second time this morning. This is a babybones fic, with Gaster as a major character who encounters Sans and Papyrus as a couple of surprisingly self-sufficient children and bribes them to come home with by offering half of a sandwich (he ate the other half) and free access to high-level scientific research. I cannot recommend this fic highly enough--both the tone and characterization are just lovely, and fill a hole I wasn't even aware of in the fandom. Gaster's struggles with the rules and structures of socialization and child-rearing are often comedic, but never feel like a punch down; and once you know how to look for it, his disarming quirkiness hides a keen mind who absolutely knows what he is doing. Sans is adorable through the whole thing, and his rapport with Gaster is utterly charming. Seriously, I generally have some rough points with kidfic, but I love this one.

Those are my very favorites of the less-known fics I've read lately, but I'll put a couple of others under the cut.

Getting to the Root of Things (dotYoo): ~14k, complete. Ending and aftermath of a Flowey Possession AU, which are always interesting to me. Lots of good h/c and Sans and Papyrus learning to communicate with each other. Healing from the ground up.

The Doctor's Charges (Aeris_Blue): ~150k, complete. Tragically published during the 2018-2019 era when fics were simply not getting as much recognition. This one's another babybones fic, where Sans is a big fan of Gaster's, and Papyrus is therefore a secondhand big fan of Gaster's, and Gaster is charmed by the two of them as he continues to make increasingly less necessary visits to the orphanage they live in until he chooses to adopt them, after which much of the story begins. Sans and Papyrus are twins in this one, which I love. It has an unhappy ending, which unfortunately means that I stopped reading about 2/3 of the way through and chose to imagine everyone was happy forever; but it was certainly worth it to read the parts I did get to!

And finally, for something more Frisk-centric and much more in line with Whither Then:

The World, Upside Down (Last_Haven): ~130k, first part of a series. This fic features a deeply flawed but well-intentioned older Frisk, who finds themself in a strange sort of reset years after their pacifist run...they've somehow gone from their own world (UT) to a version that is much less friendly (UF). Now as an experienced adult, they make their way through the Underground in order to free their friends and find a way home. This fic inspired a lot of my very early ideas about what Underfell is and how it works, and the climax is especially well-written and gripping. The sequel is a set of side stories for the main fic, and features a romance between UF!Sans and Frisk; but if that's not your thing you miss absolutely nothing by sticking to the first story--it's a full and complete story in and of itself. It's been a long time since I've read this fic, but I still remember it--I was honestly shocked to come back to it and find that it was obscure enough to fit in this post. If you like AU-hopping and deeply flawed but still good characters, this is a great fic to look through.

I think that's all I've got--as for Dancetale, I will make this confession: I have actually not interacted with that much multiverse content. I'm pretty sure UF is the long and short of AUs I've actually read about...and only then in connection to UT, I'm pretty sure. I mostly just see a lot of art and invent the characters from there?? Which may be why my characterizations are slightly off the beaten path. Or, I assume they're off the beaten path. I guess I wouldn't know?

Posting Update and the Omegaverse

Thank you for the well-wishes/lit candles/invocations to eldritch gods! I credit good vibes and my chiropractor for the fact I can once again sit at (and even on!) a desk. The next chapter of TGB will be posted within the next few days. I’m sorry for not being able to give a more specific post date, but the semester has started and I’ve already despaired of answering student emails in anything like a timely fashion.

On a completely different note, this video by the always-excellent Rowan Ellis is very good and I recommend it.

This was timely viewing for me given that one of my favorite series on Ao3, “This Time Next Year,” just wrapped up. I was surprised to find myself enjoying TTNY as much as I did given that I do not generally read RPS and find hockey alarming. 

I was about to write that I don’t generally read a/b/o either, but this isn’t actually true. I don’t seek out a/b/o dynamics and wouldn’t consider myself a fan of the genre in and of itself, but hurt/comfort and power discrepancy are such integral components of so much omegaverse fic that I...end up reading a lot of omegaverse fic.

What I loved most about TTNY -- the worldbuilding -- is exactly what Ellis cites as key of the genre’s appeal. Omegaverse recontextualizes gender, power, and sex, thereby allowing us to, as Ellis puts it, "examine our own ideas of sex and gender with a level of distance while still engaging with questions of power, exploitation, and interpersonal relationships.”

Ellis quotes one scholar who points out that writers and readers of omegaverse “are highly conscious of the consent issues involved, and actively use the generic conventions of the omegaverse to explore them...such in-depth exploration of issues of inequality and consent is not a feature usually found in either pornography or romance.” 

This hit me where I live: inequality and consent are what I read for. In that light, it makes perfect sense that I’ve ended up reading so much omegaverse almost despite myself. Like its writers and readers, I’m interested in how trauma and disempowerment complicate relationships in general and love in particular. How can you love and be loved by someone who has no legal personhood? What does ‘yes’ mean when your partner cannot say ‘no’?

 As Ellis points out, these are also questions raised by heterosexual relationships in times and places where women are subordinate to men and have no recourse to justice -- and I think that hurt/comfort and powerfic, like omegaverse, provides a way to approach those questions without reference to the real-world conditions of misogyny and compulsory heterosexuality that so many of us (*raises hand*) feel fatigued and defeated by.

I appreciate that Ellis notes the potentially (or perhaps inevitably?) racialized nature of what are essentially slavery dynamics in omegaverse fic. Obviously these dynamics are what brought me to the genre, and I winced when Ellis quoted Rukmini Pande’s critique that this corner of fandom has “overwhelmingly become a place for white fans to write white narratives about white characters -- a place to feign discussing race without ever actually discussing race.” 

Ellis and Pande are right, of course, and I’ve long been aware of and unsettled by the potential of my own work to fall into this category. Slavery is not race-bound in TGB -- my reference point is an ancient world that precedes modern racial constructs -- but this is in its own way just as (or perhaps even more?) problematic, because erasing whiteness from stories about slavery elides the complicity of whiteness in slavery and its ongoing effects.

In the abstract of Pande’s essay (which is unfortunately behind a paywall), she calls out omegaverse stories set in "slavery alternate universes”: “Populating stories that explicitly draw on the horrors of transatlantic slavery with white bodies effectively decenters the lived experiences of Black people, trivializes historical and intergenerational trauma, and foregrounds white feelings and experiences within a specifically racialized narrative.”

...oof. heavy stuff. 

As both a writer and reader, I comfort myself with the fact that if there is no ethical consumption under late capitalism, it follows that there is no ethical production under late capitalism -- including creative production. I don’t write in a vacuum: everything I produce is also a product of history. The alternative universes I imagine are bounded by the limitations of my imagination, which are also the conditions of the body I occupy and the time and place within which I exist. 

This isn’t good or bad. It just is.

Perhaps my ethical obligation, then, is to write what I believe to be true about power and trauma and sex and love while also acknowledging that it is an imperfect and contradictory and disputable and yes, even problematic truth.

Which of course makes me think of another concept sprung from the fandom id: that of the problematic fave. The linked article provides a writeup of a ComicCon panel which I did not attend (but, ironically enough, featured some IRL friends). I really like Lara Elena Donnelly’s comparison between problematic faves and ice cream: “Ice cream is delicious and easy to love, but eating ice cream all the time will leave you malnourished. This doesn’t mean you can’t have ice cream, of course, you just have to be upfront about what it is and incorporate it into a diverse diet.”

So it is with omegaverse, and h/c and powerfic generally. I think these genres can be fantastic and necessary places to wrestle with some deeply evil social problems, but they can’t be the only places we do this work.

I don’t have any good or smart note on which to end what turned into a very long post, but I hope you’ll donate to the National Network of Abortion Funds (because reproductive justice is gender justice is racial justice) and, also, I wholeheartedly recommend Lara’s books, all of them.

some important things:

my volo is absolutely NOT the canon one

the fic is essentially the history behind my own pokemon lore; it follows the main beats of PLA while completely rewriting the story. as such, there are some very new things added and hopefully you enjoy what i’ve done with the universe!

i cannot overstate how much angst is involved in this thing. the fic itself gets very rough at times; there is violence, injury, and death. i don’t think i’ve gone into “grimdark pokemon” territory, but do be aware some very bad stuff happens to our unfortunate duo

there will also be just so many spoilers here, both for the game itself and also the fic. i would highly recommend only checking this blog once you’ve caught up to the story because i will be memeing about chapter events as a way of dealing with Emotions™

if you ask one of the cast a question, they will respond with the information they have at time of asking. they might know more than you, but definitely not everything!

the entire cast are aware they’re on the blog, and as a result they won’t be acting like they do in canon. 

and just fair warning, i’m generally cautious with leaving anon on, so it’s likely to disappear at random.

i do not tag spoilers for anything, canon or fic. if i did, it would have to include my url and that’s just not feasible.

after posting a chapter, i will reblog the shitty chapter summary post with said chapter’s shitty chapter summary and wait at least a day to begin answering asks and memeing. i’d wait longer but i know me and i won’t be able to handle that.

chapters will be going up roughly once a week (i’m aiming for mondays around 6:30 pst/pdt), though i have a side series planned that i’ll be using to expand on features of this story that are canon but couldn’t be fit into the main chapters. these might extend the time between main chapters.
