Does anyone want to hear my “Uncle Harlo is Syril’s real Dad” theory?

No? Too bad.

So to begin with, I don’t think Harlo is an uncle to Syril in the traditional sense. He’s not related to the Karns by blood or marriage. From Syril’s dialogue, he seems too distant to be a close relative, with Syril implying he won’t even remember who Eedy is

I realise he’s also taking a jab at Eedy here, but even she reveals Harlo doesn’t keep in touch with them often (”he’ll respect me for having waited so long in asking and being so prudent about it.”) 

We already know Syril has grown up without a Dad. If we go by the backstory Kyle Soller and Kathryn Hunter devised, Eedy’s husband left the family in an “acrimonious, horrible way” early on in Syril’s life.

Without her husband around, Eedy tries to frame Harlo as a replacement father figure for her son, giving him the title of “uncle”, emphasising how important his favour is and his supposed interest in Syril’s career:

But to Syril, Harlo is just as absent as Mr. Karn. He doesn’t understand Syril’s career ambitions, he doesn’t make the effort to speak to Syril directly. As far as Syril’s concerned, he doesn’t know him at all:

Which leads us to wonder, why does someone as influential as Harlo have this detached investment in a guy he barely knows? To a family he’s not particularly close to? What is this “family favour” Eedy is supposedly calling on?

Idk how gospel it is, but Kyle has said in interviews that Syril’s corporate security job was a handout just like his Bureau of Standards one. If uncle Harlo facilitated that position for Syril too, then surely the favour has already been called on?

And this is the basis of my theory: Syril is the child of an affair between Harlo and Eedy. Due to Harlo’s position (and Eedy being married at the time) it’s far too scandalous for him to acknowledge his son, so he keeps his distance. Whenever Eedy calls he lends a hand time and time again, out of a sense of obligation.  

Of course, I don’t think Syril knows any of this. Eedy has always told him Harlo is an “old friend�� and because they see so little of each other, he’s never questioned it. I do think Mr. Karn found out and that is why he walked out on the family (yes this sounds like a soap opera, but is Star Wars not just a soap opera in space??) 

I don’t propose any of this will actually be revealed in season 2, but if it is, it could add some very sad context to the relationship between Eedy and Syril. Maybe that’s why she pushes him to succeed so much: so the Karns can prove themselves to people like Harlo who keep them in the shadows. 

I doubt Andor is the type of show to reveal Harlo is actually some major Star Wars character we already know. But if there is any sort of twist coming with him, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was something like this.

I can't wait to see more "sad Syril eating cereal in Eedy's kitchen" scenes. And I have a feeling cereal will play a big part in S2. I'm not even joking. Cereal and grain and wheat fields. Something like that, something big. Anyone who has ever been annoyed by the cereal scenes will realize how incredibly significant they were!!

Lol, they were probably locked in that room for the majority of those 48 hours 🤣 but I sort of assumed maybe he was out with his sister or doing something with the watch his uncle left him in that storage box.

That's right maybe Casey was doing something with his sister and yes they may have been holed up for 48 hours just themselves. Though now I do have a headcanon (maybe a mini fic) of maybe one fo those days they go to Harlo's diner to have some engagement milkshakes

There Is Nothing Slow Or Boring About Andor

One of the constant complaints I hear regarding Andor is how the first few episodes are boring, nothing happens, what was the point of all this? In this era when there isn’t a Michael Bay Explosion Inside an Explosion 

people think a particular show or movie is slow I found the pacing of Andor to be nearly perfect.

We all know the over-arching plot — Cassian Andor becomes a rebel intelligence officer, steals the Death Star plans, and dies, but what Tony Gilroy did was far deeper and more subtle than that. He was giving us the theme, we just had to take a breath, slow down and pay attention.

In that opening episode he introduces us to two young men.

One is an aimless grifter, the trauma of his childhood has left him empty despite the love from his adopted parents, and he loses his father-figure in a brutal act of injustice. Cassian cheats, steals, sleeps around, he’s a coward and a deserter, a small time crook. The only thing that gives him any purpose is his search for his lost sister and that feels more like a story he tells himself to give himself purpose. Cassian has no idea who he is or what he wants.

Contrast that with Syril Karn. Solidly middle-class. Reasonably well connected. Uncle Harlo can get him a job. Mom has a safe in the apartment with money and jewelry. Syril knows exactly who he is, his purpose, his goals. Doubts and confusion are unknown to him. 

And then all that certainly, that sense of purpose, of his very self is stripped away in the flames and dust on Ferrix. For Syril to doubt himself, his choices, his certainty, would leave him rudderless, lost and forced to examine the emptiness inside. He can’t face that so he blames everything that happened, everything that went wrong on a single individual, the man who eluded him, humiliated him — Cassian Andor.

Cassian has no idea who Syril might be, he never gave that arrogant corpo a second thought, but for Syril, Andor is his obsession. He has become Javert. Syril has lost all sense of a broader purpose and been reduced to obsessing about one man. The genius of those early episodes is to show these two men and then carefully, step by step begin to have them switch places. One man is evolving, the other devolving.

Syril had a code that governed his life. Cassian had only the desire to get through the next day with enough money for a drink and a boink. But by the time of Rogue One Andor knows not only who he is, but what he is fighting for, and he has gone to serving a higher purpose.

You always get these questions — “What’s this character’s arc?” Well, Gilroy gave us an abundance of arc, and braids them together in this stunningly elegant way.

There is power in a story of transformation. And there is nothing at all boring about it.

Ali: Ohhhhh.

Natalie: What if Eedy shows up?

[laughter, Ali bursts into laughter]

Natalie: Like you took my credit card, you fucking dumbass son of mine?

Rob: That there's a warrant out for him -- That there's a warrant out for him for theft!

Natalie [crosstalk, laughing]: She files a missing persons report! For Syril Karn!

Ali: I want him to get [laughs] stopped at the airport and Eedy has to pick him up!

Austin: So funny. Oh my god.

[Ali laughs]

Natalie: I need her to continue to ruin his life even more, please. Please please please, I'm begging you.

Austin: He's going to kill her. [laughter] He's going to snap [Rob: Oh yeah.] [Ali laughs] and he's going to kill her.

[AMCA outro music starts]

Rob: Yeah, no, again, Norman Bates.

Natalie: No, it's okay, Uncle Harlo --

Austin [crosstalk]: Norman Bates! You keep saying -- you keep saying this.

[pause]

Rob: Happy holidays, everybody! [laughter] Best to -- best wishes to your families!

[Austin sighs, AMCA music fades out]

She has a younger brother named Bennett Harlow (age 25) who works as a blacksmith to help keep the family afloat and look after her kids while she's away. One day, after losing most of his wages to gambling, Captain Jack stopped by her shop to sell her his latest kill. He was impressed by her expert knowledge on meat and hunting and asked what time she got off her shift so he could take her out. She initially rebuffed his offer until he found her at the local bar later that evening. Lorena had been drinking alone, as was her personal ritual of celebrating the day of her wedding anniversary after her husband's death. Jack sat next to her, bought her some drinks, and tried again to pick her up. She told him she had children, a detail that usually scared most men away. That didn't intimidate Jack in the slightest, claiming he found young mothers hot. Letting the booze and her natural urges get the better of her, she agreed to sleep with Jack the Ripper that night. She would quip that he was lucky he was built like her late husband because she liked tall men. The two had their night of passion and realized they were incredibly compatible. They began a friends with benefits type of relationship for half a year before Lorena gave him a genuine shot at a relationship. Jack got along well with her daughters, and the two eventually got married. Yami finds Lorena spooky with the way she can talk so casually about taking carcasses apart with her hooks and calls her "Mama Mantis." The nickname stuck with her among the Green Mantises. They admire her and her cooking very much.

Agnes is Lorena's firstborn daughter with her late husband. Agnes is the only one of Lorena's two children to remember their birth father. Being young and finding it difficult to cope with the loss, she develops anger issues. Agnes can be very sweet but has destructive habits. When her magic started manifesting, she began cutting her own hair. Lorena decided to give Agnes the freedom of deciding what to do with her hair, so it looks like a choppy bob most of the time. Once Agnes wasn't paying attention and cut the bridge of her nose by accident, leaving a scar. She usually covered it up with a bandage because she was insecure about it. After getting introduced to Captain Jack as her mother's "friend," she takes to him very well and begins to idolize him. She stopped wearing the bandage because he made having a scarred face cool. After Lorena and Jack explained they wanted to get married, Agnes wasn't as excited as Abigail was since she didn't want to feel like she was replacing her father for Jack. She did admit that she loved Jack and wanted her mom and sister to be happy. It took her a while after the marriage before she was comfortable enough to start calling Jack "dad." He never expected her to, so hearing it warmed Jack's deranged heart. She hopes to become a powerful magic knight someday.

Abigail is very creative and enjoys carving or whittling with her magic.
