I feel like being a newsie is an unnatural choice of job for David because he hates bothering people. It's bad enough that he tends to bother people all the time by accident. The last thing he wants to do is badger unfriendly strangers to buy a paper they clearly don't want. But he knows he's got to do it for the money, so he just exists in a constant cloud of embarrassment from morning bell until the last pape is sold. Which is, of course, the worst vibe for selling.

idc if y'all try and say I'm wrong, I am under the firm belief that mike and ike's full names and Michael and Ichael

their parents were expecting one baby, Michael, then they end up having two babies.

what could they possibly name the other one? Ichael!

now if you ask what his full name is he will probs say isaac, but mike will never let him live down his name, its his duty as his brother to annoy him, so whenever he feels like annoying Ike he just calls him Ichael

(I also believe that even if Ike's name isn't Ichael mike would still call him that)

david hates math (algebra) with a burning passion, but he LOVES statistics/probability, give him some data points and he will quip up a probability tree and diagrams showing spread, frequency, standard deviation, you name it.

racetrack tries to exploit this and convince david to use his brains for gambling, which david refuses.

itey is from a little town just outside of florence, italy. his family immigrated to new york when he was five years old.

he had a lot of trouble learning english and to this day isn't very talkative because he dreads being teased for his accent and grammatical mistakes.

he only likes talking with people he's completely comfortable around.

stray is very perceptive and can read any animal's or person's emotions as well a dog.

this is likely because of her naturally observant nature and because of all the time she spends with her strays. you learn a thing or two by watching and listening to them.

Romeo somehow befriends absolutely everyone, including the Delanceys. The only person who doesn't like him is Buttons. Buttons likes everyone and he doesn't know why but he just doesn't like Romeo

Elmer finds little things when he's selling (pieces of lace, broken glass that's a cool color, pretty rocks...) and gives them to his friends at the end of the day

Jack started sleeping in the penthouse before he was a newsie by accident- it was the most accessible rooftop at the time and he was a homeless kid who got lucky enough to stumble upon the newsies

I know a lot of people have this hc but Elmer is my special guy and he has a cat named Pierogi who is the ugliest thing you will ever lay your eyes upon, he was found in a dumpster

Now I just want to let y'all know that I have been digging through the small amounts of headcanons for the group and trying to find characters beyond Spot so you might see a made-up character or too since I can't find too many. jack kelly seems like he'd help out at those kids parties where they have pony riding. he works at a stable in every au. modern? yeah he took a course to help care for them. canon compliant? yeah he offers help to traders and stuff with their horses.

In the House of Refuge, guards target the kids that aren't white for special abuse and give them the hardest, dirtiest jobs. That's no surprise. Worse is how the other kids shun them, gang up on them, treat them like scum. Kids like Jack are the lowest of the low and no one lets them forget it.

Then Jack escapes. He goes home. He looks around at the white kids he's called his friends for years and he wonders if the only reason it's not the same way with them is because he has power over them and they know it.
