Doctor Who is coming back into cultural popularity, we are heading to the moon again, people are protesting for civil rights, and there’s scandals going on in the UK resulting in resignations of key officials. Ignoring Russia being Russia, what other 1963/2022 parallels am I missing?
In case you weren’t aware of what was going on in the UK right now, it’s just been revealed that between 1970 and 1990, over 30,000 people were exposed to blood contaminated with HIV and Hep C when they went for treatment for unrelated illnesses in the NHS.
What followed was a 40 year cover up by the NHS and the government to hide what was happening, and after a 7 year inquiry, this report was finally released confirming the scandal and subsequent cover up. It’s a long read, just to make you aware.
30,000 people went for various treatments, none of them had HIV or Hep C when they went into hospital, but they did when they came out after being treated with clotting factors that were contaminated, and blood transfusions. Allegedly, people went on to infect their partners because they didn’t know about their own diagnoses.
Estimates put financial compensation for all the families and individuals affected at around 10bn currently.
Here’s a link to the BBC article if anyone is interested.
...the politics of race and immigration became intertwined with one another to the extent that during the period 1950-1981, every single piece of immigration or citizenship legislation was designed at least in part to reduce the number of people with black or brown skin who were permitted to live and work in the UK.
