hello!! I’m new to studyblr and really love your blog!! I was wondering what your note taking process is... for example do you write your notes the way they are the first time? or do you write your notes as anyone would in class and then rewrite them after you have your first draft? thanks!!
hi thank you so much and welcome! my note taking process varies from class to class, and i’ll put overly-detailed info abt that in the read more but if u take 2 points pls let it be these:
don’t rewrite your notes (it might b fun but unless you’re making a review sheet from a lot of different notes or something: it’s just a huge waste of time and it’s not helpful for actually reviewing material!)
all you need to take notes is a pen/pencil and a notebook (seriously. if you are abt to spend a bunch of money on colored pens or w/e for fun? go nuts. but if it’s bc you think it will help you study better? it will not.)
ok here we go (no pictures! bc 1. i am too lazy to take the time to find my old notes and 2. i don’t want u to try to emulate what my notes look like. these are supposed to work for u!)
for in-class notes on a lecture, i tend to just have a black pen and scribble everything down as fast as i can. bullet point format. i copy down what the professor is saying, but if they’re repeating something i go back and circle it, or if i notice a connection i just draw a line between the concepts. might look chaotic to other ppl but as long as i remember what i meant then it’s doing it’s job. for a math or science class i usually keep a second color pen to write Important Formulas or a pencil to work out example problems if those are a thing
for discussion classes it’s moving a lot faster you shouldn’t b focused on note-taking you should b participating!! my notes here are just abt keeping me awake lol. might write down something someone says if it’s interesting (including and especially myself tbh! most of my papers are based on a random point i made while babbling in class!) mostly tho it’s just doodles :) oh also sometimes i think of jokes during class and write them down to text to my friends later
textbook notes are my neatest and *~prettiest~* notes. they take me h o u r s not bc i’m making elaborate drawings but bc i use v neat handwriting to force myself to slow down and actually read every word. i use one (1) black pen and one (1) colored highlighter for headers/definitions/formulas. in the beginning of high school i was still figuring shit out and ended up writing down like. every detail even if it wasn’t important in the slightest? but after experience u get like a sixth sense for what u actually need to write down (my go-to is one page of 8x11 notes per 10 pages of reading). also my handwriting has gotten better :D (after 90 pages of textbook reading in one night it usually deteriorates into a scrawl tho)

for headers, i usually like to add quotes/text (there are many good fonts on deviantart ) download many fonts before starting to edit (i recommend u to use simple fonts to write lyrics and let cool fonts like handwriting ones to highlight a word or a short phrase) also u can add shapes/pngs behind text or beside it ( check this )
if u want to add pics on a header then here are some res that can help u (this + this + this + this)
if u want to make a header from a picture u can add coloring on it and some actions like 3d, sharpen and noise actions ( ofc u don’t have to add all of them just choose what u want)

“I read your interview,” Hermann says.
Newt glances up from his workbench: Hermann is standing in front of him, one hand wrapped around the handle of his cane, the other brandishing a brightly-colored magazine at Newt. Newt sets down his hacksaw and shoves up his goggles (oversized, to allow space for his glasses) to properly squint at Hermann. “What?”
“Your interview in Bio,” Hermann says. He holds up the magazine a little higher, and, sure enough, Newt catches sight of a tiny, saturated photograph of himself smiling awkwardly at the top of the page, the Meet Dr. Newton Geiszler, The World’s Top-Leading Expert in K-Biology in bold purple capitals next to it. Hermann has the faintest hint of a smirk on his face. “I can’t believe you didn’t tell me they were featuring you. A two-page spread, at that.”
Blushing, Newt snatches away the magazine. “That’s because it’s trash, and I only did it for the money,” he says. The photo they used of him turned out terrible, too, now that he’s getting a closer look at it--the stylist they had on hand spiked Newt’s hair up with a stupid amount of hair gel and made him take off his tie, and they posed him with his arms crossed in a super corny fake lab set. Smoking beakers and everything. Like Newt’s a baby-cheeked mad scientist. “All they did was ask me about my personal life. Not a single question about my research. Who’s gonna give a shit about that?”
“Oh, I don’t know,” Hermann says. “I imagine it’s rather humanizing to know the fate of the world partially rests in the hands of--” A mock-thoughtful expression crosses his face, like he hasn’t committed the entire article to memory already, the jackass. “--someone who favors boxers over briefs.”
“Yeah, well, I wasn’t gonna tell thousands of people I go commando, was I?”
“Or, if he was a type of potato,” Hermann says, like he didn’t hear him, “would be ‘tater-tots’. I can’t believe that’s a question they asked you.”
“Ha, ha,” Newt deadpans. “Glad you’re having fun. You done yet?”
“Almost,” Hermann says, gleefully. He hands Newt the magazine and taps a section he’s circled, neatly, in yellow highlighter. Newt snatches it away. “I quite enjoyed the bit where you talk about me.”
Hermann, my partner--research partner, I mean, not--uh--total genius, keeps me on my feet, Newt said, because they’d asked Newt about his personal relationships after interrogating him about his old band for twenty minutes, and, seeing as Newt has no friends, and hasn’t had a steady boyfriend in seven months, Hermann (who is sort-of kind-of both) was the first and only person who sprang to mind. I really admire the guy, even if he can be a total pain in the ass sometimes. He’s not afraid to tell me when I’m wrong. I’m not afraid to tell him when he’s wrong. It’s like--we’re not really friends, more scientific rivals.
The article didn’t edit out anything, of course. Hearing it over now makes Newt cringe in mortification. Scientific rivals--yeesh. He may as well have said half their arguments end with Hermann’s tongue down Newt’s throat.
“Scientific rivals,” Hermann echoes, taking the magazine back. “That’s how you see us.”
He sounds way too amused for Newt’s liking, so Newt snaps his goggles back into place, pulls on a fresh rubber glove, and sticks his hand into the kaiju spleen on his bench with a wet squish (relishing in Hermann’s wince) before answering. “We are scientific rivals. What else was I supposed to call us? Frenemies-for-life? Lab partners with benefits?”
Hermann hums noncommittally.
Newt pulls his hand from the spleen. He frowns. “You don’t think we’re rivals?”
“‘Rivals’ implies that we’re on--ah--equal footing,” Hermann says. “Statistically speaking, Newton--I do tend to win more arguments.” His smug little smile from earlier returns. “Thirty-seven percent more, to be precise.”
“Of course you’ve calculated that,” Newt says. Probably up there on his chalkboard crammed in the corner of all his Breach data. Tally: Newt, 3061, Hermann, 4000....something. Newt’s a biologist, man, he doesn’t care about this shit. “So, what, if you don’t actually think we’re,” he pitches his voice into his Hermann Impression, “intellectual equals, you just like arguing for shits and giggles?”
“Now, I never said I don’t consider you an equal,” Hermann scoffs. A touch condescendingly. Oh, God, he’s probably adding this conversation to his tally the second they’re done--Newt’s jumping to conclusions or tossing out ridiculous hypotheses with unsubstantiated data, or whatever cards Hermann likes to play to shut him up. June 5, 2024: Swiftly explained to Newton that he’s not beneath me, how ridiculous of him to think otherwise. “Or that I don’t--in the broad sense of the term--consider you a rival. Merely that I’m usually right.”
Newt sticks his tongue out.
“Though you’re spot-on about arguing,” Hermann says.
Newt stops sticking his tongue out. “What?” he says.
“You’re spot-on,” Hermann repeats. The tips of his sticky-out ears go pink. “I enjoy arguing with you, and having you consider me your rival. It’s--” He clears his throat. “Stimulating.”
The way Hermann says the word makes it very clear that it’s not in the intellectual sense. More in the clothing-on-the-lab-floor-getting-off-on-getting-pissed-off sense. “Stimulating?”
“And a touch romantic,” Hermann confesses. “The cliche of it all, I mean.” He sounds a bit dreamy when he adds “Rivals.”
Hermann Gottlieb, self-professed dealer of cold, mathematical facts only, scorner of sentimentality in all forms, standing in front of Newt and implying they have a forbidden romance right out of some dimestore bodice-ripper. Newt should’ve known it was all an act from the very beginning: Hermann hand-wrote him letters in the twenty-first century instead of just copying and pasting his email from the MIT faculty page like any normal person. “You drama-loving bitch,” Newt says, grinning. “I feel like I should be offended.”
Hermann’s ears have gone fully red. “I know you enjoy it too.”
“Uh-huh,” Newt says. He tosses both filthy gloves to his bench (enjoying Hermann’s second disgusted wince of the day), wipes his hands off on his corduroys, then pulls his goggles off all the way. “C’mon, I want you to look over my weekly report before I send it off to Pentecost. You can tell me how bad it is and then we can make out.”
“That sounds nice,” Hermann says, and follows him happily to his desk.

— rn she is basically paris hilton on the simple life except a lil smarter, less juicy tracksuits, & she cut off basically all of her family to tRY to be normal on her own which ig is why she is here

hi cossette, can you give some tips on how to annotate books (for fun)? as in, do you color code / do you highlight / do you use pen or pencil / what's your system? and if u don't mind me asking, what does a finished annotated page look like for you? thank you!
hello love!! it really depends on what i'm annotating — and for who! if i'm annotating for myself, i usually use tabs and color code that way, and then sometimes i’ll write in pen! i don’t really like highlighting, because usually it’ll bleed and i also like being able to quickly find what i need, rather than having to flip through to find specific quotes! if i’m reading on my kindle or laptop though, i’ll use the built in highlighters, since they’re easily searchable! i tried to find an annotated page for you to look at, but most of mine are either very personal, or filled with inside jokes, so they might not be very helpful, but i’ve got a reel here that shows my process a little!
i’ve found it easier to annotate books if i’ve read them before, because then i can color code by specific themes/motifs (for example, with these violent delights, i color coded for things like “quotes i relate to”, “specific imagery/prose i like”, “betrayal/feud”, “foreshadowing”, etc! you can kind of see how my tabs look in this picture of the witch haven!

Title is 154075_156070 - which is the Frog Emoji code in Octal. The video shows slightly glitched shots of a possible shopping trip. We start off seeing a Crowned Frog tin of Lindt chocolate next to some sort of Jack Links beastly snacks. Then we briefly see bottles on a bar, one reading 'ARGENTINA' on the lid, before bearing witness to a Snowman and Penguin pair of figures. Next up is a U*SPICY (Fashion Meets Technology) box which opens to reveal a nail dryer. Spicy indeed. Then we see shots of a ceramic-looking Crowned Frog ?pitcher? item in a window. Next up a book is held open to a page with penguins, including an adult and infant embracing. The text is:
Love is cuddling up when it’s icy and cold
A hand closes the book to reveal the same image on the cover. The book’s title is ‘Love makes the world go round’ with a cutaway heart revealing subtitle ‘Tales of love that last forever’
The audio is in stereo with Signal in the left channel and Noise in the right. There are four sections of audio in the left channel:

By slowing down the sped up voices by a factor of 4, it is revealed that these are audio clips of the Spice Girls from the Sony PlayStation game Spice World. After a bit of investigation, it was revealed that (surprise, surprise) there was a code in play here. The first section appears to feature Ginger and does not have any repeated phrases, and provides an index for the second section, which contains audio from the other Spice Girls. The transcript of the first section is:

The highlighted letters (including the tiny 'B’ and 'Y’ which were almost lost to JPG compression) are: QEYLHSYBRITLKRUWSIYCJT which can be decoded as Vigenere with key 'Lancelot’ to become FELJDHKIGIGJGGGDHILAFI which may not look that promising at first, but it’s similar to the Octal alphabet codes we’ve seen before, with the twist being using K and L for 11 and 12, respectively.

Oh no. That doesn’t sound good. Again, the trail appears to end at this point, so it’s back to the original video with the remaining Signal section from the audio, the DTMF tones.
The tones were decoded as:

and this sequence of digits with two non-digit symbols had the Pangent Technologies Sister Location stumped for a while. Eventually a crack was found by grouping the digits by 2 and setting *=11, #=12 and 0=10 if it was the first digit in a group of 2 but 0 if it was the last. Then decoding as decimal ASCII.

This string, while not making immediate sense, at least was alphanumeric. Then, by decoding it as base64 text, the following was obtained:

This string showed promise as Y_T seemed to suggest YouTube while the grouping of digits and letters with 'MicKEyism’ seemed too unlikely to be mere random noise or coincidence. It was then noted that there were nine digits and nine letters after the digits, but we expected 11 digits for a YouTube link. The nine digits were found to be a mapping for the nine letters where by placing the digits in the same order as the letters, then writing down the letters in numeric order, eight letters are obtained (due to the repeated #7, i). Then, prepending the oddly coincidental 'Y_T’ to the front gives the 11 character YouTube ID we were seeking:

EFF's DEF CON 27 T-Shirt Puzzle
At Hacker Summer Camp 2019, EFF unveiled our 10th-annual limited edition member shirt—available only during the three-day event, and inspired by the DEF CON theme of Technology’s Promise: “a break from the dystopian imagery into a major-key, blue-sky thoughtscape, full of color and light...a future where we have tamed some of the more intractable problems that plague us in the present, where technology supports and inspires instead of controlling and surveilling.” We took cues from the DEF CON 27 Theme Guide, an illustrated ePub detailing thought exercises, media that inspired the theme, and color/style breakdowns. The theme was heavily influenced by the French comic artist Moebius’ piece entitled Alice, a piece that envisions “a future where tech lives up to our highest hopes.”
Shirt Design
EFF’s shirt design is an homage to Moebius, including artwork of a user in a digital future where the downsides of technology have been overcome. She's got a flying machine that is so efficient that it doesn't require her attention; she's got a vintage laptop from the early 21st century that still works thanks to the interoperability of her systems; she can communicate freely, using archaic Morse code, thanks to strong encryption on all of her devices; and of course, she has the ability to change her hair color at will.
As in previous years, we’ve included a secret puzzle built into the design of our exclusive member shirt as a special thanks for the clever, curious EFFers who support our work. Puzzle Design
We established a technological utopia in our shirt design, and used only one rule to create a fantasy world map of this future: draw like Moebius. With this rule in mind, we wondered - what was under the clouds in the shirt design? Where would this user park her flying machine? We gathered reference materials to inspire us, and studied Le Monde d'Edena to capture Moebius’ distinct architectural and landscape style. We wanted the fantasy map to draw players into the world, where they would get lost in the tiny paths and buildings of this utopian civilization, eventually finding doors and hidden passages to the elements of the puzzle.

Puzzle Walkthrough
Players access the puzzle via the morse code URL on the screen of the intrepid user in our shirt design (. ..-. ..-. .-.-.- --- .-. --. -..-. ... .... .-.). After arriving on the website, mousing over the map reveals glowing links in four different locations. The tower holds the final goal, which can only be deciphered after solving the other three puzzles. We decided to make progression through the puzzle non-linear this year in order to facilitate collaboration, and to give solvers time to do other DEF CON activities in between working on the EFF puzzle.
Knitting
The “first” puzzle can be found by hovering over the entrance to the palace. The page displays a knitting pattern in chart form. Knitting was chosen as a theme due to the history of women using knit fabrics for “steganography”—to hold concealed messages in times of war, particularly World War I. We also wanted to highlight skill sets not often represented in the cybersecurity space—someone familiar with knitting can immediately recognize something wrong with this pattern. There are entire rows of open circles, the symbol for a “yarn over” (skipping a stitch to create a hole), which doesn’t make sense. Inspecting the pattern reveals a hint, however: “the yarn overs are blanks”. Here are some examples of common patterns—you can compare to see the difference.
If you aren’t familiar with knitting, searching “yarn over” and identifying the symbol is the first step to solving this puzzle. The next is recognizing that the page title “SOS” is hinting at more morse code. Looking at the image, there are three different kinds of rows: all knits (blank squares), all purls (filled circles), and all yarn overs. We already know that the yarn overs are blanks from the hint, so that means trying the pattern in two ways: one with the knits as dots, and one as dashes. The correct method is converting knits to dots, which gives the morse code string “.-- .- -. -.. . .-.” which translates to “wander”.
“ASCII” Art
The next puzzle’s page is a throwback to an older Internet era, and is located at the docks tunnel. The page contains (mostly) ASCII art, like the following header that was used in EFF’s EFFector mailings (if you haven’t signed up to receive them, you can do so here):
There are a few different ways to identify where the puzzle is on this page: noticing that the whitespace is off in some of the images, such as the computer, or by taking a closer look at the characters in the pieces themselves. Looking at the character codes, the non-ASCII character U+2800, a braille space, can be found in place of a standard ASCII space 32. A hint in the page reads: “the distribution doesn’t matter”— clueing the solver into the idea that the order of the braille spaces within the art doesn’t hold the solution. Using a script to count the occurrences of U+2800 in each art piece gives the following: ”99 101 112 104 97 108 111 112 111 100”, which are ASCII codepoints for “cephalopod”.

Syzygy
The third puzzle, found in the entrance to the temple, consists of this image:
The first hint towards solving this puzzle is in the URL: “5y2y6y” is “leetcode” for “syzygy”, which is a phenomenon where many celestial bodies (at least three) are collinear in the same gravitational system. The image, keeping with the theme of exploration, shows an imagined system of planets. The answer to the puzzle comes from the first number of rotation steps where the planets will all align under the arrow. There are a number of ways to find this number. The number is small enough that you can write a program to brute force the answer. Or, since the periods of the planets are relatively prime, you can use the Chinese remainder theorem. The first full syzygy of this planetary setup is at step 74800, or leetcode for “taboo”.
Final Puzzle
The last puzzle, located at the top of the tower, simply displays:
Inspecting the page gives the hint “O(ne) T(rue) P(airing)”, a reference to the one time pad cipher, a relatively old message encryption technique that is difficult to crack as long as the key is random, as long or longer than the plaintext, never reused, and kept secret. A tool like this one can be used to decrypt the text, or the adventurous can read about one time pads and try their hand at translating it themselves. The key to this one time pad is “wandercephalopodtaboo”, a combination of the answers from the three other puzzles. Using this key to decrypt the ciphertext translates it from “oerbslutpjenclprr” to “seeyouspacecowboy”, marking the completion of the puzzle!
