Omg ! I didn't think you'd actually respond !! We're gonna fly away from here is easily one of the best ones in the series!! It's so Twisted and disturbing but almost domestic... (Also tysm for including my name idea in your story, Idk where it came from, I just liked it and I appreciate you!) I digress. I've returned with a concept. Al almost always has a plan when he does something. I don't know where you want to go with the second child but this won't be too focused on that one...for now. I really liked how you interpreted Alastor being a weasel and weaseling his way back into the families life and was thinking about how many I wonder about if he has a plan right now, like not a long term one, obviously, but a very specific one for a 'short term'. Women back then, especially in the south weren't allowed to have bank accounts so finicial trapping works well in this case. Also just kinda the ability to turn their kids against her would be enough to terify me. People talk about the 1950's housewife, but oh my god, 1920's housewives were a new kind of depressed. I, personally, don't think Alastor is the type of physically abuse women. No, he's far too classy for that. Instead, like I said, I think he'd either use his status in their house to trap his wife. We were able to run away while we were pregnant and alone, but we have a child now...and would we be willing to leave our child with him? No, I don't think I would, personally. being married to alastor, the radio show host is quite the sensation in your town. but, behind the closed curtains, alastor did things that would’ve made lucifer shake in his boots.

no, he didn’t hit you. his mother would kill him if he hit his wife. but, just because alastor never hit you, didn’t mean he didn’t abuse you.

he tormented you in the worst way possible, through noah. and now, emilia.

it’s been 3 years. your little emilia lives up to her name, a cute little girl who’s eager to win. and, little noah is now a big boy, double digits and all.

and, since you’ve returned back to his house, alastor has done nothing but twist your babies’ minds. ‘once upon a time, mama wanted to run away from daddy… so, she ran away and took big brother with her. daddy was sooo worried for mama and big brother though… daddy was able to track mama down, and took her home!’ he cooed to your daughter, bouncing her in his arms— with you right beside him!

you wanted to yell; scream. of course, emilia was too young to understand what alastor was saying. but, still— the fact that he was trying to tell your children that he was some sort of white knight who saved you from yourself. you wanted nothing less, but to snap that neck of his like a twig.

you really shouldn’t act so brashly though. to outsmart alastor, you have to think like him. think of what’s smarter in long run.

alastor was ‘kind’ enough to give you an allowance. $200 every week for groceries and whatever you may need. he’s even so kind as to let you have some ‘private bonding’ with noah and emilia as they accompany you to the farmer’s market.

thankfully, you had a father who wanted to make his little girl survived even without a husband. and so, you had to hear all of his ramblings about finance. saving about 45% each week for 3 years… was about $14,000!

if you saved just a little more, you’d be semi-financially independent until you can get a proper job to take care of your children. it was run-away money, so to speak.

you hid the money in noah’s room. after all, who would expect money there? especially $14,000? and, it worked, for a while. every monday, while you tucked him into bed, you brought the money with you and hid it behind his dresser.

until, what had seemed like a normal tuesday. you came home from the tailor’s, getting back a dress that noah accidentally tore. when you came home, it was only two hours after noon. and despite that, alastor was home.

“a-alastor..! what are you doing home so early? you have a broadcast in 2 hours…” you narrowed your eyes at alastor, on the floor with your children, many new toys surrounding them. “ah, darling! i decided to pick up our children early, and we may have splurged on our little shopping spree…” he smugly grinned. “oh..? where’d you get the money?” you raised your eyebrow, closing the door and laying your bearings on the dining table.

“funniest story ever, my love! there was a random stash of money in noah’s room! seems as if the tooth fairy came early!” he laughed. random stash of money in noah’s room..? “oh. i see.” your breath stopped for a minute, thinking of what kind of consequences could come from it.

“do you have any idea how that money landed there?” he side-eyed you, expecting a lie. “perhaps it was from the old owners? you know this house, there’s so many secrets in here.” you said. “i see… i suppose you are right, darling!” he giggled.

you were back on square one. financially dependent on your husband, if you could even call him ‘husband’. as you climbed up the stairs, you heard alastor whisper to your son. “you see that? momma lied. she got less talkative when papa asked her a question.”

this is what alastor’s been teaching your son. as much as you want to protest, you did lie.

oh, how much you wished for much more simpler times. playing with your baby boy in the kitchen as you make little treats together for his snack at school. and now, the boy alastor’s turning him into— a cunning sociopath, the lord only knows what he will teach your daughter.

this is just a minor setback, it has to be.

1. barrington whelk, family, & his alive days:

resentful, entitled, angry, lonely whelk is like that for a lot of obvious reasons but is also a mirror to noah. even after he was murdered brutally noah still loves glitter in snow globes & blue's spiky hair & playing with ronan. despite all the voices he hears whelk is alone & separate from his coworkers, noah is part of a family (even if not all of him is really there). tl;dr whelk is a reversing mirror to noah - & both are gay! comp het in an all-boys school for kids of rich & successful parents who stereotypically demand success & the perfect-seeming life (declan and the ashleys, get high grades or you're out, how much do those uniforms cost per year?). the czernys seem lovely at noah's funeral but who knows what pressures noah felt from them/school teachers/society or how much or little they acknowledged the existence of non-cishet identities. cabeswater takes adam's control over himself, his security in his own body, "I sacrifice myself." next to that, adam giving up everything, noah says "I almost woke up Cabeswater, we were close enough to do that." it's less how 'close' they were & actually how much whelk valued noah, reciprocated or not. or, this is noah talking, maybe noah thought they nearly woke up cabeswater, thought they were close enough to do that, but whelk didn't care enough for it to do that. noah makes excuses for whelk killing him (with crushing parallels to things people say in real life for people they love who hurt them). i'm including this whole paragraph because there's more here: ""You don't understand," Noah whispered. Blue was afraid he would disappear. This, she understood, had been a secret, carried inside him for seven years [since he died], and he still didn't want to confess it. "He was upset. He'd lost everything. If he'd been thinking straight, I don't he would've... he didn't mean to... we were friends like - are you afraid of Gansey?"" in the 7 years after he killed noah whelk didn't let himself miss him until it looks like he's going to die (neeve, ritual) at which point the guilt & all the good things about noah hits him & he feels "this terrible weight". of course all of this could be platonic but yeah it's just fun in a really heartbreaking & tragic way to think that they had Something almost romantic. "It was a strange, old expression, one that Whelk hadn't heard since his own days at Aglionby, when he, too, had been tight as ticks with his room-mate Czerny. [and they were room-mates!] He felt a hollowness inside him, like he was hungry, like he should've stayed home and drunk more to commemorate this miserable day." "Only Whelk and Czerny, treasure hunters and troublemakers, cared about [St Mark's Day's] existence." "Czerny and Whelk had returned, a half-dozen times, taking readings (next to the circle, there were six different numbers in Czerny's handwriting), digging in the dirt for possible artefacts, watching overnight for signs of supernatural activity." "All Whelk could find out was that the line loved reciprocity and sacrifice, but that was frustratingly vague." before whelk's family lost all their money him & noah kept pushing the ritual to wake the ley line back, there wasn't a desperate need (& maybe they liked staying there together overnight, taking readings, chatting). whelk's second girlfriend was "technically" noah's girlfriend.

2. adam vs whelk:

adam kills whelk. "[To Noah] Adam said, rather more ferocious than he'd been a moment before, "A friend wouldn't kill you."" whelk's ambition & the value he put on his family's good standing & his obsession after his dad's arrested and his family loses their money vs adam's ambition & the value he puts on improving his own good standing & his obsessive drive to push himself forward and up. "Adam had several things he thought about saying, but when he opened his mouth, it was none of those things. "Why Noah?" he asked. "Why not someone horrible?" Whelk closed his eyes for a bare second. "I'm not having this conversation. Why are you here?"" whelk hears 'voices' from his deal with cabeswater, adam sees 'ghosts' from his deal with cabeswater.

[when noah slips from time does that mean whelk does too?? or does he come back to life, if he never killed noah?? or does everything stay the same & they just fill in gaps where noah was to make it make sense???]

3. ronan & noah & The Secret.

"Noah said to Ronan, "I know why you're mad." Ronan sneered at him, but his pulse heaved. "Tell me then, Prophet." Noah said, "It's not my job to tell other people's secrets."" (this quote is so interesting - whose secret is it?? does he mean he can't tell ronan his own secret? or future!ronan's secret? someone else's??) [i could add more here about ronan & noah & cabeswater & cars, noah's red mustang, & both being gay but it's been nearly 90 mins & i'm getting sleepy again]

4. noah dies so gansey lives,

noah & whelk die vs adam & ronan live, whelk kills noah, adam saves ronan (& vice versa).

5. the blue kiss:

noah died when he was 17 - still learning about himself, still ("technically") dating a girl, so it makes sense that his ghost is still stuck in that mindset. maybe it's too early for him to realise he liked girls as friends, not romantically, maybe it's denial, maybe he never gets to work that out about himself. comp het, pressures of being in a rich family sent to a fancy & demanding school. offers to kiss blue if she's "curious" about how it feels, rubs the mark on his cheek from where whelk killed him before he does. the first kiss is a mess, the second is "a lot like kissing a dishwasher". "Blue squinted. "Are you sure you've done this before?" "Hey!" he protested. "It's weird for me, cause it's you." "Well, it's weird for me because it's you.""We can stop." "Maybe we should." then he refers to how kisses look in movies & says to imagine & copy those movie kisses - ok comp het, ok playing the part. after the 3rd kiss, "His smudge had got very dark, and he was cold enough that she shivered. Blue gave him a watery smile. "That was super nice." He shrugged, eyes doleful, shoulders curled in on themselves. He was fading. It wasn't that she could see through him. It was that it was hard to remember what he looked like, even while she was looking at him. When he turned his head, she saw him swallow. He mumbled, "I'd ask you out, if I was alive." Nothing was fair."

what's your favorite fob album actually?

hi this is going to be a long answer because i could not decide on just one <3

pre-hiatus: infinity on high - folie ily but me and ioh have history. this is the first fob album that really sunk its teeth into me, even though i knew next to nothing about the band or much else of their music. i had a cd id burned and played it on repeat the summer i got my first real apartment. (this was also the year i really came out to myself. it was rough. but screaming along to ginasfs helped). also vincent van gogh was my hyperfixation before fob and id love to talk to mr joe trohman about it. This album is that first taste of freedom, that sense of coming into your own despite the cost. It's blaring thrillers intro as you peel out of your parents' place and head back into the city. It's realizing you're in love with your best friend and you thought love was supposed to feel warm and happy but not this kind of love (this new knowledge about yourself feels like a dirty secret you share with your shitty little car and the empty roads of the farmland around you). Infinity on high is an old friend you can always come home to, pick up right where you left off, they see all your new scars, your battle wounds, the ways you've grown and changed, and they tuck a dandelion behind your ear and love you just the same.

post-hiatus: so much (for) stardust - smfs is for the orchestra kids and you can pry that from my cold dead hands. Even though I'd casually listened to fob for years, this is the first album where i got to experience it from the first teases through the releases through everything that was and is tourdust. *tw* i initially made this tumblr when i was relapsing into some disordered eating habits, but smfs brought me over to foblr instead, and brought me to friends (looking at you @pluggedintosaverockandroll and @katrois ilysm). I listened to love from the other side a lot on my february trip to nyc, really thinking i was gonna end up there for good by september. It felt like hope. The first time i listened to the album all the way through was skating to work along the charles river. I think i played it on repeat until i started applying to jobs in Vermont and noah kahan got brought into the mix. Seeing them on tour healed a little something in me, i think. Especially with ginasfs as an 8ball song. That scared kid with a burned cd never would've believed we made it out of indiana, that we lived in a big city on the east coast, and that we get to have a body that feels closer to home more days than not, that we don't have to be scared of who we love anymore. Getting to see the band put together this album and go on tour and have fun gives me hope, because right now i'm in a folie stage of life. I have to believe someday i can heal too.

This is kinda a weird question but how do you develop your characters personality when you create them for a story? Or how do you even know what kind of personality you want them to have? I always find this challenging for me to do but when I watch your series all the characters are so different!

Hi! First off, tysm for saying that! Character development is really tricky and I sometimes feel like i’m not doing it right, so it’s OK if you feel like that too! But here are some of the tips that I can think of to help with that!

1) Diversify. I know I started off with the same thing when asked about creating characters physically, but the same applies with developing characters’ personalities. When you have a story with characters  coming from different background (I’m talking race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic backgrouns, religious/political views, etc...), you AUTOMATICALLY end up with characters with different personalities because, naturally, if they are to reflect real life, they’re going to have different life experiences. And you don’t even have to be political about it, if that’s not your sort of thing! Diversifying a cast if not necessary political. It just reflects the real world, with the added bonus of helping you avoid every character being a copy of the other. That is, if you do your research, which brings me to tip number 2...

2) Research! You know how they say “write what you know”? I don’t necessarily agree with that sentiment, but it really applies to the previous tip mentioned. You can’t just write the story of a person whose experience you know nothing about. A lot of writers (including sims directors) tend to  having a diverse cast under the excuse of them not knowing how to write a character that’s different than their own race, sexual orientation, religion, etc... But the internet’s right there. BESIDES, unless you’re writing a story about black teens struggling with police brutality, or an Arab queer’s struggle with homophobia in their native country, or something equivalent to that typa deal.....You don’t really need to dive that deep into research. Just do some superficial research, just to know your shit! And even if you don’t, fully, there’s nothing scary about diversifying your cast. I remember once, before I started doing research, in Episode 2 (16: 39) of The Rivers, I had Raven sleep without a head scarf and got some people (jokingly) commenting about it. I’ve been giving her a head scarf ever since. ;p And, don’t be afraid to ask people. I still do it all the time! On that note, if you ever plan on including an Arab muslim queer into your series, hit me up. <3 

4) Character arcs, which are just about my favorite thing in the world. Whether they’re good to bad arcs, or bad to good (redemption arcs ftw!!), you can never go wrong with a well established character arc to spice things up a bit! People change, and if you want your characters to reflect people, they should change too. Also, nothing gets people talking like a character arc. Seeing a character start one point, only to end up on a whole other point...that’s really gonna give you the push you need to really develop the character beyond the same old same old. JUST MAKE SURE TO SLOWLY ESTABLISH THE ARC. You can’t just...........suddenly make a bad character good, or a good character bad, on the course of one or two episodes. This is when tip #3 really plays in. If you do intend for a character to eventually have an arc, and that’s something you really should have established before (not necessarily at the start of the project, but a few chapters/episodes before said arc should come to light), then gradually start highlighting the morally grey side of the character (If you’re going bad > good, this means the character’s soft side, and if you’re going good > bad, this means the character’s flaws). 

3) Morally grey characters are your friends! Try your best to always avoid black and white characters, meaning characters that are unconditionally good or unconditionally bad. That doesn’t reflect real life people, if you think about it. No one is JUST good or JUST bad (unless you intentionally want to write them as so, then go off. But if you don’t then keep mind of that!). Nothing makes a bad character more intriguing than if he has a soft spot for something (take: a super villain who wreaks havoc, but would do anything for his little brother). Similarly, an over-idolized hero character, who never does anything wrong, is just as boring. Give that shit some flaws!! Some FLAVOR!! So, the next time you’re writing a character, whether good or bad, give them something that could sway them into a different moral direction (even if you never pursue it). This something, whatever it is, also opens the room....

And finally, 

5) Give your characters a... thing. Or, multiple things. I didn’t know how else to word that, LOL. But, yeah! I know this tip seems obvious, but I learned the hard way that, if you don’t establish your character’s thing before you start the series, you’re gonna end up with characters that you just have no idea what to do with. Giving your  characters a thing also helps a lot when it comes to avoiding making every character a copy to the other. 

Take The Rivers, for example: I couldn’t really apply tip #1 to the main cast because they’re siblings! And siblings rarely belong to different race or religions, at least these siblings don’t. So, I gave each sibling a thing (or multiple things) that makes them stand out from the rest. Jonah is a recovering alcoholic, and that plays a huge factor in how I develop his character throughout the series. It’s a factor that plays in whenever I want him to react a certain way to some news, good or bad, and the way I want OTHER characters to handle him (see: the way Raven treats Jonah before & after she finds out that he’s a recovering alcoholic). Similarly, Noah has Coronary Artery Disease, and is prone to panic attacks, and those are 2 things that I constantly need to keep in mind when writing him. Raign also has generalized anxiety disorder, and is a Lesbian - both of these factors make her stand out from the rest of her siblings. And finally, Tresor has serious control issues over her younger siblings because she’s raised them like her mother. She also has abandonment issues because of Jonah, so she reacts to Noah leaving in Episode 12 much differently than Raign, for example.

All of these things that I’ve given every character helps in the development process of the characters because a huge part of developing a character has to do with how they 1) act and 2) react to things!

And ofc, always take into consideration the series’ genre. Some of these tips don’t necessarily apply! Take, for example, a fantasy series set in an alternative/fantasy universe  (Like my other series, The Foundlings) were stuff like race and religion/political views don’t really apply. In that case, play on things like different species or creatures, etc... to make characters different than one another. That’s a whole other type of research for a whole other topic that I can get into, if you need me to. But for now, I hope these tips help a bit  and I answered your question!
