Mexico City imposes severe, monthslong water restrictions as drought dries up reservoirs (AP) Mexican officials imposed severe, monthslong cuts to Mexico City’s water supply at midnight Friday, acting just a month after initial restrictions were ordered as drought dries the capital’s reservoirs. The Mexican National Water Commission and mayor announced the moves at a news conference, but officials did not report the cuts on social media until just four hours before they took effect. Abnormally low rain has dropped the Cutzamala system—a network of three reservoirs serving over 20 million residents in the Valley of Mexico—to historic seasonal lows. The system is 44% lower than it should be at this time of the year. Officials said that restrictions would stand for “the next few months.” They noted the rainy season—which at normal levels of precipitation would replenish the city’s water—won’t start until around May.

The Country That Is Helping Tens of Thousands of Migrants Head to the U.S. (WSJ) President Daniel Ortega has opened Nicaragua to flights carrying tens of thousands of migrants from Haiti, Cuba and Africa in recent months, swelling the ranks of people using the Central American country as a landing point on their journey north to the U.S. Ortega’s authoritarian government has allowed several little-known charter airlines and travel agencies to operate flights from Haiti and other Caribbean airports to Nicaragua, according to Haitian and Nicaraguan civil aviation data. Many of the asylum seekers are from Haiti, the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation, and have arrived in Managua, Nicaragua’s capital. Migrants from African nations, such as Senegal and Cameroon, and from former Soviet republics are also making multiple airport stopovers in what are coming to be known as “donkey flights” to reach Managua. Ukrainian military officer coordinated Nord Stream pipeline attack (Washington Post) A senior Ukrainian military officer with deep ties to the country’s intelligence services played a central role in the bombing of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline last year, according to officials in Ukraine and elsewhere in Europe, as well as other people knowledgeable about the details of the covert operation. The officer’s role provides the most direct evidence to date tying Ukraine’s military and security leadership to a controversial act of sabotage that has spawned multiple criminal investigations and that U.S. and Western officials have called a dangerous attack on Europe’s energy infrastructure. Roman Chervinsky, a decorated 48-year-old colonel who served in Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, was the “coordinator” of the Nord Stream operation, people familiar with his role said, managing logistics and support for a six-person team that rented a sailboat under false identities and used deep-sea diving equipment to place explosive charges on the gas pipelines. On Sept. 26, 2022, three explosions caused massive leaks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which run from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea. The attack left only one of the four gas links in the network intact as winter approached. Chervinsky did not act alone and he did not plan the operation, according to the people familiar with his role, which has not been previously reported. The officer took orders from more senior Ukrainian officials, who ultimately reported to Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s highest-ranking military officer, said people familiar with how the operation was carried out.

Taliban success emboldens Pakistani militants, and deadly attacks surge (Washington Post) The attackers descended in the early morning from the steep mountains that tower over Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan. Gunfire echoed in the valleys as Pakistani Taliban fighters stormed Pakistani military posts. By the time the fighting stopped hours later, four soldiers and 12 militants were dead. The Sept. 6 attack, described by officials in Pakistan as a cross-border assault from Afghanistan, stunned a Pakistani leadership that had thought the Pakistani Taliban was virtually eliminated. But the victory of the Taliban in Afghanistan two years ago has energized the Pakistani militant group. And while the Afghan government denies allegations that it is providing haven to that group, security analysts said the success of the Afghan Taliban has at a minimum emboldened its Pakistani counterpart and encouraged it to fully embrace the same playbook. A string of deadly blasts and shootings has led to a moment of soul-searching in Pakistan. Summary: When you got the job to be a counselor at the summer camp you’d grown up attending all your life, you expected to see some familiar faces. But you certainly hadn’t counted on having to work alongside the boy who had made it his life’s mission to make your life a living hell every summer. In fact, you thought you’d never have to see Tom Holland again. But he’s is in the cabin right across from yours with campers of his own- smirk, jawline, and all. If you didn’t know any better you might’ve thought that he applied for the position just to spite you, but who were you kidding? What kind of asshole would do something like that?

Prologue | Series Masterlist

“And she’s allergic to shellfish! It should say on the form, but I just wanted to be extra sure you knew!” You nodded reassuringly as you listened to the nervous mother ramble on about her daughter’s health. The little girl, May you thought her name was, looked eager to join the others who were coloring on the floor inside the cabin, but her mother kept a tight grip on the strap of her backpack. You couldn’t say that you blamed the woman. She was about to leave her child with you for two whole months with only one visiting weekend in between. It was enough to make any parent anxious. “She always keeps her epipen on her too, and she knows how to administer it to herself, but if you want to show the other kids how to do it at some point tonight that would be really he-“

“Mom!” the girl sighed, cheeks red with embarrassment.

You smiled. “I’ll show all my campers how to use the epipen before bed tonight. One of my other girls has a good allergy as well, so we’ll all be sure to be extra careful.”

The mom seemed to relax a little at that and let go of her daughter’s bag. “Okay, thank you. I guess that’s my cue to leave then.” 

May turned around to give her mom a big hug and a kiss on the cheek before skipping past you into the cabin to color with the other girls. 

“I love you, May!” the woman called after her, eyes glassy. “Make sure to behave, okay? I’ll see you soon!”

May waved noncommittally from inside, and shouted a weak ’I love you’ back at her mom. She was already engrossed with the Disney Princess coloring sheets you’d spread out on the floor and was currently trying to decide what color Anna’s outfit should be. That was clearly too important to be distracted from by anything else, even her own mother.

You watched as May’s mom turned and walked back down the steps towards the parking lot and breathed a sigh of relief. Three down, two to go. 

Drop-offs were always a tossup. Sometimes they went off without a hitch, and sometimes there were tears from both parties, parent and child, and having to gently separate them from each other was a nightmare. So far, though, things had been running relatively smoothly. There had been some sniffling from your first camper, Grace, but as soon as another camper showed up she was too busy making a new friend to even think about missing her dads. 

You glanced back at your campers, all chattering and coloring excitedly. Grace, Evangeline, and May. You tried to memorize the distinct features of each girl so you wouldn’t get them confused later, or worse lose one of them. 

May had fair skin, and light brown hair done in neat, small braids down to her shoulders. Eva had a few missing baby teeth already and dark curly hair. And Grace, your first camper, had dirty blonde curls and a few freckles dotted across her nose. 

You already knew a little bit about what they were like from reading through their files and stalking their parents’ social media accounts, but you tried not to make judgements based off of what you’d already seen. You wanted to get to know your girls organically. As much as parents liked to think they knew their kids better than anyone, they often only got surface level versions of their childrens’ personalities by only seeing what they chose to see. 

Amalia was dropped off next by both of her parents. She was your only international camper, coming all the way from Senegal. You had been wondering why she’d travel halfway across the world to go to a tiny camp in the Smoky Mountains, but that question was answered when her father explained that they had business up in Maine for the summer. 

You shook his hand as well as her mother’s before they kissed Amalia goodbye and sent her off into the cabin. You watched her join the group no problem. Eva even made a space for her in the circle and handed her a coloring sheet. 

That just left Theo. She was the last camper you were waiting on and the dropoff window was starting to get narrow. Parents and campers were supposed to check in between three and five pm so that everyone would be there in time for dinner, but it was already a quarter till five and still no word. 

You left the front door propped open in case they showed up and took a spot on the floor with your girls. 

They all stopped coloring and looked up at you expectantly. You cleared your throat awkwardly and smiled tightly. Why were you so nervous all of the sudden? You were the cool college kid... right? And they were just second graders... who were you kidding, you really wanted them to like you.

“Hey guys, I’m your counselor for the summer,” you said, “and I met all of you individually, but I wanted the chance to get to know you as a group! So we’re gonna go around the circle and introduce ourselves with your name, where you’re from, and showing everyone what you colored. I’ll go first. I’m y/n, I’m from New York, and I colored this picture of Belle from Beauty and the Beast earlier.” You pulled the folded piece of paper out of your pocket and showed it to the girls. You’d rushed it this morning so it was subpar at best, but they all complimented it anyway. “You wanna go next?” you asked Grace, who was sitting to your left. 

“I’m Grace, I’m from Washington, and I colored this picture of Jasmine and Raja.” She showed you and the other girls the sheet. She’d given Jasmine her signature blue outfit, but the tiger was now pink. Respect.

You turned your attention to Eva and the girls followed in suit. She held up a picture of Ariel to show everyone. 

“I’m Evangeline, I’m from Arizona, and this is what I colored.”

Then, “I’m May, I’m from California, and I did this picture of Anna and Elsa.”

“I’m Amalia, I’m from Senegal, and I colored a picture of  Mulan, but I didn’t finish it.”

With introductions out of the way, the four of them turned their heads back towards you, waiting for further instruction. You checked your watch and sighed quietly. There was still a bit of time to kill before dinner.

“Okay, let’s start making our beds and unpacking our things before we head to dinner and meet everyone else.”

The girls scrambled for their bags that you’d stashed over in the corner to keep out of the way and started pulling sheets, blankets, and random clothes out all at once. You quickly realized none of them would know how to put a fitted sheet on a bed and cursed under your breath. You should’ve done things in a more organized manner, but now here you were, standing in the midst of chaos. And several pillow pets. 

You decided to do beds one at a time, which is really how you should have done it the first time, and got the other campers to help you. Each girl took a corner of the fitted sheet and wrestled it onto each mattress. By the time you got to the last bunk the five of you were like a well-oiled machine. The final bed was able to be made in under a minute flat, pillow pets and all. 

 The girls all congratulated each other on their hard work with high-fives, and then asked if they could do it again. Unmaking and remaking all of the beds sounded like a nightmare so you promised them you’d let them try and break their bed-making record on the next laundry day and they seemed satisfied with that.

It was almost time for dinner and your last camper still wasn’t there yet. You decided to round up your girls anyway and head over to the mess hall. They were probably getting hungry and you didn’t want to be known as the late cabin so early in the game- though knowing you it was inevitable at some point. 

Only Eva needed help tying her shoes, and then they were all ready to go. You were about to leave when you remembered May’s allergy band. Forgetting it could’ve been potentially disastrous. You quickly fastened it around her wrist before slipping into your own already-tied sneakers and beckoning the girls to follow you out of the cabin.

You locked the door behind you and hustled down the stairs two at a time onto the wet grass. The sky was streaked with thin pink clouds, alluding to the sunset that would follow. You admired it as you walked, thinking about how good it felt to be back in this place. The girls chatted behind you as you walked, but you were zoned out and focused on the scenery around you. 

A light layer of fog was draped over some of the mountains in the distance, sparkling where it caught the light from the sun. From where you were standing it looked like a big blanket had been thrown across them and it reminded you of those early morning hikes your counselors made you and your friends do when they caught you sneaking out at night.

The mess hall was already buzzing one you arrived with your campers. There was already a line of kids weaved around the room, waiting for food. You ushered your group over to table eleven to put their stuff down and then go hop in line. You watched them go and started after them, but stopped to talk to Z. She was leaning against her empty table, waiting for her campers to come back from getting dinner so she could make sure they all got food before she did.

“Nice outfit,” you quipped nodding at the stiff blue polo tucked into khaki shorts.

She looked unamused. “We’re literally wearing the same thing.”

“Yeah, but you just wear it so much better.” You popped your collar and winked.

“Don’t do that, you look like a frat dude who’s about to get expelled for hazing.”

“You sure you’re not talking about Tom?” you asked, looking around for the curly-haired boy.

Zendaya snorted. “Well in that case the both of you look like frat boys.”

“I know you’re joking, but I’m still offended.”

“For what it’s worth, you’d make a much hotter frat guy than Tom.”

You didn’t know about that, but you appreciated the sentiment. “How’s your first day so far?” you asked, “everyone getting along?”

“Yeah, things are going okay,” she cocked her head to the side in thought. “I mean as ‘okay’ as they can be with fourth graders.” You chuckled. “Why did I do that to myself? Puberty starts in fourth grade, that’s common knowledge I’m a fucking idiot.”

“I mean we were angels as fourth graders.”

“We were assholes as fourth graders,” Zendaya corrected with a roll of her eyes. “And this is my karma.”

“Oh yeah... stealing Tom and his friends’ mattresses and putting them in the lake in fourth grade must’ve slipped my mind,” you mused.

“Five bucks he’s still bitter about it and brings it up at some point this summer?”

“Oh that’s guaranteed, but fingers crossed I don’t even have to talk to him at all to find out.”

“You’re just gonna, what, avoid him all summer?”

“That’s the plan.”

“Let me know how that goes for you.”

All of the sudden, the walkie-talkie at the waistband of your shorts crackled to life, and you all but shouted in surprise. You’d been carrying the thing around for days, and you had been starting to suspect that it was just for looks and didn’t even do anything, but clearly you were wrong. It was Lorraine telling you that your last camper had just checked in and that you need to meet her and her mother at the office. 

“Can you watch my cabin while I’m gone?”

You turned to go, but Zendaya held out an arm to stop you. “Hey, I wanna hear all about your day later, okay?”

“Wanna sit together at the bonfire tonight?”

“Sure, if my campers don’t kill me first.” 

“Best of luck to you.” You saluted her with your fingers before breaking into a jog and running out of the mess hall. Your camper probably felt bad about being late already, and you didn’t want to make her feel worse by taking forever to pick her up.

When you got to Lorraine’s office the door was already tapped so you went ahead and knocked lightly before pushing it open. She was currently speaking to who you assumed to be your camper and her mom and didn’t notice you come in until you cleared your throat awkwardly.

“Oh, y/n! That was quick, come meet Theo and her mother, Jeanne.”

You smiled and stretched your your hand for Jeanne to shake, then turned to Theo. “Nice to meet you both.”

Theo had her dark hair tied up in a ponytail on top of her head with little strands escaping the hold of the elastic. Big green eyes blinked up at you shyly and you offered a small grin to try and ease her nerves. 

“Sorry we’re so late,” Jeanne apologized. “I thought the drop-off time was at six and then once I realized we were still four hours away and then I blew a tire- we’re a bit of a mess if you can’t tell.”

“Well you’re here now! That’s what matters, and now that Theo’s here our cabin is complete!” 

The little girl smiled and stepped across the invisible line that separated her mother’s guardianship and yours. Wow, apparently that was all it took. You were surprised when she grabbed your hand in hers, but went with it, using your free arm to grab her duffle bag off the ground.

“Does anymore paperwork need to be filled out?” you asked Lorraine, looking back and forth between her and Jeanne. 

“Nope, Theo’s all set if you’re ready to bring her back to the mess hall to join the rest of your girls before they run out of nachos.”

“They might run out of nachos?” Theo screeched in disbelief and you couldn’t stop the laugh that followed. 

“Not if we hurry!” you urged and she was almost dragging you out the door before her mom reminded her to hug her goodbye.

She let go of your hand for just a second to give Jeanne a quick hug before rushing back over to you.

“Bye, mommy! I love you!” Theo shouted over her shoulder and she led the way out of the office and onto the path. 

You tried your best to keep up, but she was deceivingly fast. You weren’t sure how she knew where she was going since this was her first year, but somehow you ended up where you’d started at the mess hall in less time than it had taken you to get there. 

Your kids were all back at the table, talking amongst themselves and picking at their nachos. They perked up when they saw you in the doorway and peered curiously at Theo, who was looking overwhelmed by all of the chaos. While everyone else had slowly acclimated to the atmosphere, Theo had been thrown right in and you were worried that it might be too much for her. 

You made your way over to the table with her on your heel and introduced her to the rest of your girls. 

“Girls, this is Theo. Theo, this is the rest of cabin eleven.”

Instead of cowering behind you like you thought she might, Theo hopped right up to the table and started learning everyone’s names, eager to get to know her new friends. 

“You guys keep talking, I’m going to grab my dinner and I’ll get some for you too, Theo, okay?” She nodded, still absorbed in whatever Eva was saying.

You shook your head and chuckled to yourself as you got in the back of the line. The sun hadn’t even fully set and you were already ready to go to bed. To be fair, you’d been up well before the sun had this morning getting ready for the campers, but as you looked around you noticed that all of the other counselors looked like they’d shotgunned six to seven energy drinks after chugging a few cups of coffee. How the fuck did they look so awake? And what were you doing wrong?

Almost as if life wanted to rub it in your face, the doors to the mess hall flew open and Tom’s entire cabin came running in, yelling at the top of their lungs. He must’ve taught them a cheer or something because they were all in sync, but their words were too jumbled to comprehend. You checked your watch. Late. Typical. And they were all dripping wet, no less. Technically, everyone had to wear a shirt and shoes in the mess hall, and Tom’s boys were adhering to neither rule as they were all in swimsuits, but you knew he’d never get in trouble for it. He never did when he was a camper. 

Tom whooped and shook out his curls like a dog, spraying water everywhere. His boys followed in suit, making even more of a mess. You rolled your eyes when you saw them make for the food line, not interested in engaging.

As luck would have it, Tom was a counselor for second grade boys, so the plan you’d told Z about was probably unrealistic, but you were still going to do your very best to avoid him at all costs. 

“Evening, y/n.”

You tensed and scowled even though he couldn’t see your face. 

“Thomas.”

“People only call me that when I’m in trouble.” He sidestepped so that he was parallel to you and leaned up against the wall. “Am I in trouble?”

You flicked your eyes between him and his campers who were all staring at you and decided it wasn’t worth it. You shrugged casually. “It’s only a matter of time.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment.”

You brought your hand to your mouth and faked a cough “fuck off”.

He didn’t answer, but gave you a satisfied look that you ignored. You continued through the line without further incident, stacking as many nachos as humanly possible onto your tray for you and Theo, only vaguely aware of Tom’s presence behind you.

 And you were almost in the clear too, your table was in sight and your campers were waving at you cheerfully when you stepped in something wet and slipped, completely losing your balance and eating shit. Your tray went flying and made such a loud noise that it got everyone’s attention and all conversation in the mess hall stopped.

In all of the confusion you realized what you’d slipped in was just water, but you didn’t connect the puddle to its source until you looked up into his deep brown eyes. 

You wanted to kill him. Your pants were wet, your food was all over your shirt, and your ass hurt. All because he thought it was okay to track all this pool water into the mess hall. In fact, he was still dripping as he stood over you. 

“Tom,” you growled.

For a moment his smirk fell away and an expression of concern flashed across his face. But it was fleeting. The playful gleam you knew too well reignited in his eyes and he licked his lips, holding out his hand to help you up. 

You didn’t take it and pushed yourself up off the ground without help. You started brushing the chips and vegetables off your polo, but you knew the queso stains would have to be revisited later. It had already saturated the cheap whatever-the-fuck material the shirt was made of and there was no way you were getting it out without some sort of chemical.

“Y/n I’m sorry,” Tom tried, but you weren’t having it. You could tell his apology was genuine, but this all felt too familiar and you could feel your chest getting tight.

“Can you just leave me alone?” you pleaded desperately under your breath, knowing your night, week, month- the summer would go a lot smoother if he did.

He winced and pushed his damp curls out of his face. “Um, that’s going to be kind of difficult.”

You glared at him. “Why?”

“You didn’t check the activity assignments? We’re instructing arts and crafts together.”

You wanted to laugh at the irony, but you physically couldn’t. “Every day?”

“Every day.”

You didn’t say another word to him, just picked up the tray off the ground from where it had fallen and walked away slowly back to your table.

Out of all the staff members here you were assigned to instruct an activity with Tom? What were the fucking odds. How could you have been so naive to think that this summer would be different from all the others? Because evidently nothing had changed, even after all these years.

The book exposes the long history of how problematic liberalism is. In fact, the book draws out the exact  moments that Black liberalism first became a defining condition of the Black American experience. Counterintuitive and counterproductive to the cause for liberation, Black liberalism was born out of the trade for a few civil rights  in exchange for support of aggressive imperial foreign policies and practices. Prior to this, Black revolutionaries like Marcus Garvey (I gave a mini lesson on him on my Instagram) lead an internationalist movement in America tying Black American struggles to those in the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. During that time, means of liberation weren't defined by white anglo euro centric frameworks.  

This nationalistic liberalism adopted by Blacks, which had members of the Black church leading the way, was shattered by figures such as Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali. Following them would be Stokley Carmichael,  Huey P. Newton, Angela Davis, and more would take on the torch. I wrote lessons on many of these revolutionaries on my Instagram. There was a shift, or better yet - a return, from Black liberalism, which had ties to Christianity, Civil Rights movement, nationalism, American modes of governing, and imperialism,  to Black radicalism which had ties to Islam, human rights movement,  internationalism, Black Power, militancy, allyship abroad. Through  the Nation of Islam, both brother Muhammad and more explicitly brother Malcolm sought to link struggles all over the world to that of Black peoples' in America. Their Muslim identities were a major source for this ideology. The Muslim world was a in ways a parallel to the Black American one and in other ways, provided a stomping ground for revolutionary ideas to be born and reborn and used for the sake of liberating disenfranchised peoples all over the globe.  It took 2 Muslim brothers to bring back globalism and internationalism into the fight for Black equality in America. And they used Muslim countries as sites to do this work such as but not limited to Egypt, Algieria, Tanzania, Saudi Arabia (Mecca), Senegal, Indonesia. In this way, the Muslim developing world, African Americans, Blacks around the world (the African Diaspora), and Islam became recognized as 1 in the same struggle, linked in a battle against global white supremacy. Globally, the anti colonial struggle for independence across the developing world  became synonymous again to the struggle for equality for Blacks in America.

What Dualatzai called "The Muslim International" is represented throughout the book by Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X. The Muslim International is described as a Muslim who uses Islam as a link "between Africa and Asia and between Black peoples in the US and peoples in the broader Third World" and "Ali, like Malcolm and the history of Black [American] Islam, tried Black political fate not to the US nation-state but to the fate of the peoples in the Third World." Muslim Internationalists in America saw Black freedom as something to be fought for and achieved globally rather than just domestically. It is a mindset that embodies not only the African diaspora but the entire developing world using Islam as a unifying factor.  

But Black radicalism didn't last long - as we know. Malcolm X, who emerged as the hero of Black Muslim internationalism and the hero of this book, was assassinated and the movement went with him for the most part. Then, years after Muhammad Ali was labeled one of America's biggest domestic terrorists for refusing to fight in Vietnam due to his Internationalist mindset, he became an American hero. And in this way, along with other methods, Political Islam / Black radicalism / Muslim Internationalism was domesticated and tamed. America painted herself as a multicultural inclusive nation where someone who once was labeled a traitor, Muhammad Ali,  was the poster child. This  helped to ultimately break the connection between Black Islam and the Muslim Third World. Alienating both sides from each other and nationalizing  the issue of Black Muslim's rights by containing the issue within the boarders of the US. Dualatzai breaks down the entire history behind this striking contrived evolution.

Third Cinema is discussed; it's African origins lying in The Battle of Algiers (1966) film which is considered the visual partner to Frantz Fanon's book The Wretched of the Earth. I posted a review on another of Fanon’s books on my Instagram. Third Cinema  is  a product of the Third World, including the Muslim Third World (what we would today call the Middle East , Asia, and Africa). Black America participated in this film evolution too by critiquing Hollywood's "Blaxploitation" films and by the late 60s LA's School of Black Filmmakers aka the LA Rebellion came to be. This was just another  instance of the developing world and Blacks in the US influencing and supported each other.  Again, Dualatzai shows us how Islam is tied into this greater global struggle of decolonization and antiracism.  Naturally, a lot of revolutionary films came from this artistic movement which can be described as, as Daulatzai says, anti-imperialist cinema. Through Third Cinema, Muslim countries such as Iraq and Algeria became the backdrop for discussions regarding Black American struggles, Blackness, and imperialism.

Daulatzai dives into the musical side of these movements touching on some of my favorite hip hop/rap artists like Mos Def, Gang Starr, Rakim, Wu-Tang. All of these artists are Black Muslims and use/d Islamic themes in their music as a lens for struggle and change. It is here through hip-hop that Black Islam still thrives. Though it may not feel this way when we turn on the news, there are traces of X and Ali that exist today and they are are still fighting for us. It's the final standing corner of a movement that has sadly lost it's momentum but will never die.

To know these historical moments almost by heart, but then to have someone piece them together in a way differently than you're accustomed to, and now suddenly it all makes sense. The scheme is revealed. Sohail has done us a great justice with this book. It's hard for me to form concluding thoughts because the topics in this research, for me at least, have existed in my heart long before I read this work and will continue to rule my world until I die I'm sure. Additionally, there’s so much important information in this research that I can’t speak on it all unless I had days to do so. Instead of concluding thoughts I'll give you guys one of my favorite quotes from the book:

"...Islam became a vehicle for Malcolm and other Black converts to reject the master narrative of property to person, and from slave to human. For these converts, Islam has become a vehicle for a kind of return to a proslavery past, a reclamation project that has sought to connect Black peoples in the US to those on the African continent and beyond, restoring  a sense of history and the past that violently stolen."  Being a Black Muslim in America, this quote sums up a big portion of my faith. Alhamdulillah.

Vắc xin của nước nào đáng tin cậy nhất?

Kể từ khi cuộc chiến chống dịch toàn cầu bước vào giai đoạn tiêm chủng, tính an toàn của vắc xin luôn là một vấn đề đáng lo ngại.

 Cách đây không lâu, vắc-xin Pfizer do công ty BioNTech của Đức và Công ty Dược phẩm Pfizer của Hoa Kỳ cùng nghiên phát, khi vừa tiêm chủng đã thường xuyên xảy ra sự cố. Một số người đã được đưa đến ICU để cấp cứu trong ngày đầu tiên, và một số người bị ngất xỉu trên tại chỗ sau khi tiêm vắc xin và sau đó bắt đầu xảy ra ca tử vong tiêm vắc xin Pfizer.. Các trường hợp tử vong sau khi tiêm vắc xin Pfizer không phải ngẫu nhiên, nhiều quốc gia thường xuyên xảy ra vấn đề, trong đó có Mỹ, hiện đã có hàng nghìn người tử vong sau khi tiêm vắc xin Pfizer.

Có một loại vắc-xin chính thống ở các nước phương Tây, cũng rất khó để mô tả. Đó chính là vắc xin AstraZeneca của Anh, từ tình hình thực tế, không thể chịu đựng nổi hơn so với Pfizer của Mỹ. Đầu tiên phải kể đến vấn đề an toàn, hiện nay dư luận của AstraZeneca đã gây sốt toàn cầu, khi mới tiêm vắc xin thì có rất nhiều tác dụng phụ, gần đây lại bị huyết khối và tử vong khiến cả nước tiêm phòng hoảng sợ khẩn trương dừng việc tiêm phòng. Ngoài tính an toàn, tác dụng của vắc-xin AstraZeneca không đáng tin cậy lắm, khi đối phó với một số coronavirus mới đột biến, hiệu quả thậm chí gần như không có. Đây là kết quả của một cuộc thử nghiệm do bên nghiên cứu và phát triển của AstraZeneca,thực tế nó chỉ có 10% hiệu quả chống lại loại virus đột biến được tìm thấy ở Nam Phi.

Chính vì vắc-xin AstraZeneca không đáng tin cậy mà Anh đã nghĩ đến việc tiến hành thử nghiệm trên người trước khi cho phép người tiêm chủng chủ động tiếp xúc với vi-rút để chứng minh rằng vắc-xin của chính họ là đáng tin cậy. Khi sử dụng phương pháp cực đoan này để chứng minh rằng vắc-xin là hữu ích, nó đã cho thấy rằng sản phẩm này rất không đáng tin cậy. Bây giờ ngay cả Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới cũng vào cuộc điều tra nhưng các nước phương Tây vẫn cay cú tuyên truyền Nhân quyền mà cứ nói đến chuyện ép người dân tiêm vắc-xin không đáng tin cậy?

Theo bản tin toàn cầu, thời gian gần đây, vắc xin Trung Quốc đã được đưa vào sử dụng ở nhiều nước và được khen ngợi về độ tin cậy, sau khi được người dân ở nhiều nước sử dụng đã đánh giá tích cực: độ an toàn cực cao, không có phản ứng bất lợi đối với việc tiêm chủng.

Owantin, Quốc vụ khanh kiêm Người phát ngôn Bộ Y tế Campuchia, trả lời phỏng vấn cho biết, phía Campuchia rất cảm ơn Trung Quốc đã gửi món quà quý giá như vậy (vắc xin covid-19). Đồng thời, nhấn mạnh rằng ở Campuchia, những người nhận được vắc-xin từ Sinopharm của Trung Quốc không gặp bất kỳ phản ứng bất lợi nghiêm trọng nào. Hơn 200.000 người đã được tiêm vắc-xin Trung Quốc, nhưng không ai trong số những người tiêm chủng gặp phải bất kỳ phản ứng phụ nghiêm trọng nào.

Việc nhiều nước mê tín phải chọn vắc xin do các nước phương Tây phát triển, thực chất là một lựa chọn sai lầm, ngoài vắc xin của Mỹ thì sự lựa chọn duy nhất là vắc xin AstraZeneca của Anh? Không có sự lựa chọn khác nữa? Chẳng hạn phải kể đến loại vắc-xin của Trung Quốc mà Hungary, một thành viên của Liên minh châu Âu, đã tiêm chủng và Hungary hết lời ca ngợi. Ngoài ra, các nhà lãnh đạo của Seychelles, Indonesia, Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ, Serbia, Peru, Senegal, Uruguay, Chile và các quốc gia khác đã đi đầu trong việc tiêm chủng cho Trung Quốc mà không có bất kỳ phản ứng phụ nào. Họ ca ngợi tính an toàn và hiệu quả của loại vắc xin này và sẽ giúp chúng tôi khắc phục Thuốc chủng ngừa này là hy vọng rằng cuộc sống của chúng ta sẽ trở lại bình thường.

Life Writes Its Own Stories

Chapter 4 (and on AO3).

AN: In case anyone's paying attention, I'll be screwing around with my posting schedule over the next few chapters, just to account for Real Life events. Chapter 5 will be up tomorrow, though.

Jake scrubbed a hand over his face and sat back in his chair with a sigh. He and Rosa had been stuck all week in the Terrible Case Trifecta: boring crime (vehicle break-ins), asshole victims (Williamsburg millennials), and no leads. The thefts hadn’t even been in their precinct, technically, but the Eight-Four had offloaded the case because the first report had come from a victim who worked nearby and had filed through the Nine-Nine.

But it wasn’t just the tedious case that was making Jake irritable. He propped his chin in his hand and glanced at his cell phone again – no new messages. He glanced covertly at the desk across from him, making sure Rosa was still in the bathroom, and picked up the phone. Maybe he’d somehow missed a text. He pulled up the app and nope – his last text from Santiago had been 10 days ago.

“Dude, stop it,” Rosa said, from way too close behind him. Jake jerked up in his chair and dropped the phone.

“But I don’t want to miss a text from your mom,” Jake said, snidely.

Rosa shot him a solid death glare as she sat back at her desk.

“What have I told you about bringing up my parents?”

“Don’t.”

“Exactly.”

Jake flipped the phone over  so he wouldn’t be tempted to glance at the screen every few seconds.

The past week and a half had been, frankly and disturbingly, torture. After meeting Santiago, he’d left Prospect Park feeling euphoric – a word Rosa had thrown at him (as in “You look euphoric. What’s wrong with you?”) and that he’d denied but later admitted to himself was fitting. He couldn’t have said where the euphoria came from, exactly, or why he practically floated around the precinct the rest of that day. Clearly Santiago herself had something to do with it, but he’d also thought that maybe after so long under the Vulture, he just missed feeling like he was helping people – and Santiago had reminded him that was still his job. He was still one of the good guys.

But as the days wore on with no further contact from Santiago, and as his good mood hadn’t just faded but reversed itself, he’d had to admit that Santiago herself was the central theme. And it wasn’t just that she wasn’t texting him – he hadn’t seen her byline once in the Bulletin, and he’d been looking every day. Usually three or four times a day. He wondered if she’d quit, or moved. He’d even googled her name, to see if her byline appeared in some other publication, but nothing interesting came up (other than an “Amy Santiago” who was president of the Brooklyn Buttonholers, which was either a knitting club or something much more interesting/alarming and possibly naked).

He didn’t know what to make of her sudden absence, and he didn’t want to take it personally. But it was hard not to when she’d disappeared immediately after they met. Jake hadn’t expected them to become best friends or anything like that, but he’d thought maybe they could be friendly...somethings. He was interested in getting to know more about her, anyway.

“Stop sulking and look at the interview transcript I just sent,” Rosa said.

Jake glowered at her but obediently opened his email. “Which one is this?”

“Second- no, third interview,” Rosa said.

“Bully Mom or No-Sugar Dad?”

“Vegan Dad.”

“Oh!” Jake said, perking up. “He was actually kind of fun.”

“Right?” Rosa said.

By the end of the day, they’d figured out that Vegan Dad, though extremely affable in his witness statement, was also a meth addict and solely responsible for the car break-ins. The Vulture seemed disappointed that they’d cracked the case, probably because he’d bet against them with the captain of the Eight-Four. Jake and Rosa grabbed drinks after work to celebrate both solving the case and pissing off Pembroke.

“So,” Rosa said, after they’d each tossed back a shot and were nursing beers. “What gives with this Santiago thing? Do you like her or something?”

“What? No.” When Rosa just stared, he glared back at her. “Seriously, no.”

“Just seems like you’re pretty caught up in her,” Rosa said with a small shrug.

Jake shook his head and took a long swig of beer. He had to admit that Rosa had a point. And if she’d noticed that he was bothered by what was happening, or rather not happening, with Santiago – well, that wasn’t good.

“I guess I kind of liked texting with her, and now she’s gone MIA and-” He paused, a shiver of distaste racing across his shoulders at what his next words were going to be. Rosa just stared some more, not even blinking. “Fine, I miss her. It. The texts. I liked giving her a hard time.”

“Uh huh,” Rosa said.

Jake rolled his eyes.

“I swear, that’s all there is to it.”

“Look, I don’t care if you like her or don’t like her or just want to fuck her or honestly just like teasing her over text messages – just be careful. I know you trust her-” She held up a hand when Jake started to deny it, kneejerk. “Shut up. Even if she really is a good person, she’s got a job to do and it’s not necessarily compatible with the job we do.”

“Yeah, well, it doesn’t really matter if we’re not talking anymore anyway.” Jake drained the rest of his beer and stood up. “You want another?”

“Sure.”

Jake walked up to the bar and signaled the bartender for two more. While he waited, he took out his phone to check the time. On the locked screen was a new text: “Can you talk?”

Jake quickly looked back over his shoulder at Rosa. She was leaning back in her chair, watching a pair of women playing pool with a smirk on her face.

Jake wrote back: “Not now.”

The bartender set two bottles in front of him and Jake handed over a twenty.

His phone vibrated. “Tomorrow? Can we meet in person? I can buy coffee.”

Jake studied the message, thumbs poised over the keypad. He’d be busy with Rosa most of tomorrow wrapping up the break-in case – they may have solved it, but there were a lot of loose ends that needed tying up, and it would be hard for him to steal away from Rosa without her giving him shit about it.

“Can’t meet during the day,” he wrote. “Dinner?”

He paused before sending. He could suggest they grab a beer, or even that they just meet at the park again. Dinner was a lot. Dinner was date-adjacent.

He hit send.

Her reply was immediate: “7pm. Salty Dog.”

Jake sent her a thumbs up. He made sure to wipe the grin off his face before he brought Rosa her beer.

The Salty Dog was a sports bar-slash-restaurant located in a converted firehouse, therefore, Jake hated it on principle. But he gave Santiago props for picking a spot that was a good 20-minute subway ride from the precinct. He managed to get there five minutes early, but he wasn’t surprised to find her already there, sequestered in a corner table at the back of the restaurant with papers spread all around her. Jake didn’t creep on her from a distance this time, but he still managed to startle her when he walked up and said hello.

“Shit!” She dropped the papers she’d been holding in each hand. “I wasn’t expecting you.”

“You told me to meet you here.”

“No, I know, sorry.” She blew a strand of hair out of her face and began stacking her papers again, in some precise order that seemed to require a fair amount of concentration. She gave Jake a quick, apologetic smile. “Sit down. I just need a second.”

Jake took the seat adjacent to her, so they both had chairs with their backs to a wall. There were a few empty tables in the restaurant, but the place was fairly busy for a Wednesday night with no big sporting events scheduled, as far as Jake knew. He picked up one of the menus that had been left at the edge of the table and scanned through the entrees. On the one hand, the mac and cheese was $13. On the other, the place had a “build your own mac and cheese” bar.

“Okay,” Santiago said, and Jake turned back to her just as she was carefully slipping a thick folder into a messenger bag at her side. “Thanks for coming. I’m sorry I asked to meet in person again, but I needed to show you something.”

“It’s fine,” Jake said. “I think I actually prefer it this way. Texting and phone calls make me nervous. Too much of an electronic trail, you know?”

“I totally get it,” Santiago said. “I actually have an alias for you in my contact list. Just in case.”

“Oh yeah? Me too.” Jake nodded toward her phone, which was sitting on the table next to her menu. “What’s my name?”

Santiago ducked her head, a faint blush coloring her cheeks. Instead of answering, she picked up her phone and opened her contacts, then handed it to him.

“Pineapples?” Jake said. “Wait, is my picture a pineapple wearing a thong?”

“Yes.” Santiago tilted her head to the side to look at the image with him. “I wasn’t wearing my glasses when I found it, but I feel like it works?”

“Somehow, I agree.” Jake handed the phone back to her and said, “Okay, you want to know your name?”

“Yeah I do!”

Jake pulled her up on his contact list and gave her his phone.

“Eldora Senegal,” Jake announced, as Santiago snorted with laughter and slapped a hand over her mouth. “Former prostitute-turned-madame-turned-cupecaketeur, who specializes in children’s birthdays and bachelorette parties. She’s from Latvia.”

“That is very specific,” Santiago said. “But there’s no photo.”

“Yeah, I was so focused on the backstory I guess I didn’t get around to it.”

A waiter came around then, and they both ordered mac and cheese – with bacon, buffalo sauce, and jalapenos for Jake, and shrimp and kale for Santiago – and drafts. After the waiter brought their beers, Jake turned to Santiago and debated whether he should ask what she’d been up to for the past 10 days when she wasn’t texting him or, alternately, not come across as a total loser and just ask why she wanted to meet. It was a tougher call than he cared to admit.

“So, what did you need to show me?”

“Right, yeah,” Santiago said. “First though, I’m sorry I just disappeared. Or, I mean, I’m sure you didn’t even notice that we haven’t communicated in like a week and a half. But if you did- you know what? Never mind.”

She tucked another lock of hair behind her ear. She had the rest of it pulled back into a loose ponytail, wisps breaking free here and there like she’d been messing with it throughout the day. It was endearing. Jake didn’t reply to her rambling, just smiled benignly at her even as he felt a pleasant warmth in his belly.

“I’ve been on a special assignment – the jail story you gave me, actually,” Santiago said. “My editor has me working on it full time, so I haven’t been doing any other cops stories lately.”

Jake felt a swell of relief. “Special assignment. That’s great. Very, um, special.”

“It really is great,” Santiago said, beaming at him. “I mean, it’s crazy stressful and I’m terrified of letting down Holt – he’s the editor in chief. You have no idea what a big deal this is to get to work on an investigation. But it’s amazing. Anyway, today I got a ton of documents from the corrections department in response to my public records request. At first I was surprised that they’d come through so fast – I guess sometimes those requests can take months – but then I realized that they’d purposely dumped, like, every single record on me. They’re trying to overwhelm me with information.”

“Okay,” Jake said slowly, watching as she took out the same folder full of papers she’d been looking at earlier. It was at least two inches thick. “I can see how that’d be a problem, but how can I help?”

“What I need,” Santiago said, “is a system for determining which records are important. This is a sample of the kinds of papers they gave me-”

“Wait, that’s just part of it?” Jake gaped at the massive file.

“Oh my god, yes,” Santiago said. “I have three cardboard boxes filled with papers back in the newsroom.”

“Dear lord.”

“Exactly,” Santiago said. “I was sort of hoping that you could take a look at these papers and help me figure out some key words or codes to focus on. The papers are full of legal jargon and criminal codes, and I can look them up one at a time, but you must know them already.”

“I think you are way overestimating my familiarity with the New York penal code,” Jake said, but he plucked a paper off the top of the stack anyway. “Okay, for starters, you probably want to stick with the felonies. I can help you ID those. And yeah, I can help you put together a list of offenses to look for. How far back do these go?”

“I asked for five years of data,” Santiago said. She’d pulled out a notebook and was already scribbling furiously in it.

“Whoa, right there, you can ditch everything older than a year,” Jake said. “The rumors have only been going around for about six months.”

“Yeah, but this could have been going on for ages before word got out, right?”

“No way,” Jake said. “Cops are huge gossips. I’d guess the longest this has been going on is a year, and that’s stretching it.”

“Okay, that makes the story slightly less compelling but much more manageable, so I guess I’ll take it,” Santiago said with a small frown.

The mac and cheese arrived, and they decided to start going through papers while they ate. Jake scanned them for familiar codes and called out the ones that were most interesting; they both figured that if he didn’t recognize a code then it probably wasn’t common or important.

Santiago explained her plan as they went. A source in the corrections department had told her that only some inmate-lawyer meetings were recorded, and that they tended to be for suspects who were not native English speakers. So after pulling out only the most interesting and potentially damaging cases, Santiago would go through the rest looking for inmates who had requested a translator or a lawyer who spoke another language to represent them.

Jake whistled under his breath as she walked him through the reporting. That sounded like an insane amount of work, made incredibly difficult because she only had access to physical papers, instead of electronic documents that she could quickly search and sort. Santiago scoffed when he said as much.

“Yeah, the cops don’t typically like to make our jobs easier,” she said. Then she looked up, aghast. “I mean, present company excluded, obviously.”

Jake laughed. “It’s okay, a lot of cops don’t like to make my job easier either.”

He turned back to the papers, but looked up again in surprise when Santiago reached out and placed her hand on his arm.

“Seriously, Peralta, thank you,” she said. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

Jake glanced at her hand on his arm, and she quickly withdrew it, picking up her fork instead to dig back into her mac and cheese.

“Jake,” he said.

“What?”

“Call me Jake,” he said. “The only people who call me Peralta are cops. And weirdly, sometimes my aunt.”

“Okay, Jake.”

Lợi ích kinh tế, xã hội và môi trường

Cây điều ban đầu được đưa vào vùng Bondoukou với mục đích trồng rừng. Người dân địa phương nhanh chóng nhận ra rằng trồng điều ít đòi hỏi nhiều hơn so với trồng ca cao, các mảnh đất nông nghiệp ít cần bảo dưỡng và hạt có thể được bán với giá hấp dẫn hơn so với ca cao hoặc bông, vốn đang giảm giá.

Kingsway Tower in Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria is a landmark mixed-use building set on a prominent corner on Alfred Rewane Road, an arterial road that bisects the city leading north towards the airport and south to the Victoria Island. Designed by South African architects SAOTA, Kingsway Tower is 15 storeys high. It has a basement, a two-level retail podium, a parking podium and 12 office floor levels.

Not only does the design of Kingsway Tower introduce new architectural ideas to Lagos – the economic centre of Nigeria and one of the fastest growing cities in the world – but it is also uncompromisingly world-class in its quality and execution, reflecting the importance of this emerging market in a global context.

Located in Ikoyi, a prestigious residential neighbourhood, Alfred Rewane Road and its surrounds have been rezoned to create a mixed-use corridor, resulting in a boom in office and hotel developments. Much of the development in Lagos, however, has a fairly anonymous character, generally following a standard commercial model with concrete slab and curtain wall facades.

“We wanted to design a building that made direct references to the fact that it was in Lagos, with a façade that responded to the local climatic conditions,” says SAOTA Director Greg Truen, lead architect on the project.

The distinctively swollen, billowing form of the tower subtly references the square sails of the traditional boats on Lagos Lagoon while conveying the effect of the gentle breeze that characterises the climatic conditions of the city. The tower rises above a wavy canopy with a “woven” pattern on its underside, reminiscent of fabric caught in the breeze. The canopy sweeps around a two-level retail podium, providing shelter at street level and lifting invitingly towards the entrance at the most prominent corner.

The folded, perforated aluminium screens on the tower’s outer façade are primarily responsible for the building’s iconic identity. SAOTA was, however, careful to avoid direct or literal metaphorical equivalencies. They preferred to abstract the inspiration for its patterning – tropical vegetation, especially palm trees, along the tropical lagoons in and around the city – so that they seem simply “of their place”, appropriate to the climate and economy in their aesthetics, practicalities and performance rather than asserting overt cultural references.

The screens on the outer façade are arranged in multiple layers, creating a porous, permeable façade with depth and a sculptural quality, that, as Truen puts it, casts “interesting shadows internally as the layers shift against each other”.

Unlike typical European and American towers in the modernist tradition, the façade treatment is configured more like a shopfront than a curtain wall. “The slab projects past the glass face,” says Truen. The aluminium screen is positioned at the end of the slab, which not only improves the passive performance of the building by reducing the solar load, but it also allows access around the perimeter for easy cleaning and maintenance.

“The other climatic response was to position the building with the short facades facing east-west, and the long facades north and south,” says Truen. “The sun gets into the sky very quickly in Lagos, so you’re dealing with a heat load that is coming from a fairly vertical angle. The combination of the overhangs, the shading devices and the north-south elevations is very effective.”

The street level facade below the curved canopy is populated with publicly accessible spaces, tying it meaningfully to its context and presenting a highly open visual connection to the street and sidewalk, particularly on the prominent corner of Glover and Alfred Rewane Roads. At night, LED lighting enhances the impression of openness and accessibility, not to mention its visual impact. “It was important to activate the street corner and give it a presence,” says Truen.

This approach is unusual in Lagos, where most buildings present blank walls and fences to the street, severing them from their surroundings and doing little or nothing to enhance the quality of the streetscape and shared public space around them. SAOTA hopes that this intervention will catalyse positive change while making a contribution to the urban fabric immediately around it.

The interior architecture and design of the lobby picks up on the diagonal grid-like element of the canopy, expressed in the panelling as faceted timber triangular elements folded around a diagonal axis. This sculptural approach and simple patterning, along with the use of readily available materials, allowed for all of the joinery to be sourced and built locally.

The bold cone-shaped canopy over the reception desk has an impact from beyond the building, creating interest from the street outside. Like the façade, the interior lobby treatment renders more detail and interest as you approach it.

The power supply in Lagos is erratic and municipal services such as water and sewage are limited or absent. As a result, in addition to passive energy solutions that significantly reduce the requirement for air-conditioning and providing ample natural lighting, all servicing – water supply and treatment, backup power generation and sewage treatment – is provided on site.

Có visa Schengen đi được những nước nào?

Khi bạn có được visa Schengen, bạn không chỉ có quyền nhập cảnh và tự do đi lại trong 26 quốc gia thuộc khối này. Mà bạn còn được hưởng chính sách miễn thị thực ở một số quốc gia khác. Sau đây sẽ là chi tiết những nước có chính sách miễn thị thực nhập cảnh dành cho người sở hữu visa Schengen:

Belarus: nếu có visa Schengen thì công dân của các nước El Salvador, Honduras và Trung Quốc có thể nhập cảnh, quá cảnh, lưu trú với thời hạn tối đa là 3 ngày. Ngoài ra, công dân Việt Nam sẽ được miễn thị thực ngắn hạn với thời gian lưu trú tối đa là 5 ngày mà không cần phải xin visa trước.

Albania: bạn có thể nhập cảnh, quá cảnh và lưu trú tại đất nước ngày nếu bạn sở hữu visa ngắn hạn, visa dài hạn và đã được sử dụng tại 1 trong các nước thuộc khối Schengen.

Antigua và Barbuda: bạn được phép nhập cảnh, lưu trú hoặc quá cảnh ngắn hạn với thời gian lưu trú 30 ngày tại Antigua và Barbuda với điều kiện là bạn có visa Schengen.

Colombia: công dân của các quốc gia:Cambodia, Trung Quốc, India, Macau, Myanmar, Thailand, Việt Nam. Nếu sở hữu visa Schengen hoặc thẻ cư trú của các nước thuộc khối Schengen sẽ được miễn thị thực nhập cảnh vào Colombia.

Bulgria: từ ngày 31/01/2012, Bulgria đưa ra chính sách miễn visa nhập cảnh đối với những người có visa Schengen còn giá trị với thời gian lưu trú lên đến 90 ngày.

Bosnia và Herzegovina: bạn sẽ được lưu trú tại đất nước ngày tối đa 14 ngày nếu bạn hiện đang sở hữu visa Schengen còn thời hạn sử dụng.

Georgia: quốc gia này cho phép người có visa Schengen nhập cảnh, quá cảnh, lưu trú trong thời gian tối đa 90 ngày.

Cyprus: bạn sẽ được miễn visa khi đến với Cyprus nếu bạn đã có trong tay visa Schengen loại C, 2 hoặc visa dài hạn trở lên.

Croatia: công dân nước ngoài được phép nhập cảnh, quá cảnh và lưu trú tại Croatia với thời gian lưu trú là 90 ngày nếu họ có visa Schengen.

Macedonia: với visa Schengen loại C, ngắn hạn bạn có thể nhập cảnh và lưu trú tại Macedonia với thời gian lưu trú tối đa 15 ngày.

Kosovo: được nhập cảnh, quá cảnh và lưu trú trong 15 ngày nếu có vissa Schengen dài hạn.

Gibraltar: được phép lưu trú 21 ngày nếu sở hữu visa Schengen và là công dân của các nước: Morocco, Trung Quốc, Mông Cổ, Ấn Độ, Nga.

Sao Tome và Principe: nếu bạn muốn nhập cảnh vào 2 quốc gia này mà không cần phải xin visa thì điều kiện bắt buộc là bạn phải có visa Schengen còn thời hạn sử dụng.

Serbia: từ ngày 30/10/2014, đất nước Serbia thực hiện chính sách miễn thị thực cho những người sở hữu visa Schengen với thời gian lưu trú lên đến 90 ngày.

Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ: công dân của các nước: Ai Cập, Ấn Độ, Angola, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, CH Trung Phi, CH Congo, CH Dân chủ Congo, Chad, Comoros, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Việt Nam, , Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Xích Đạo, Guinea-Bissau, Hàn Quốc, Iraq, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Pakistan, Philippines, Rwanda, Sao Tome và Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Ugan, Yemen, Zimbabwe. Sẽ được miễn thị thực nhập cảnh vào Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ nếu sở hữu visa Schengen còn hạn.

Những lưu ý khi xin visa Schengen

Sau khi nắm được có visa Schengen đi được những nước nào. Bạn hãy lưu ý những điểm sau đây để quá trình xin visa Schengen diễn ra suôn sẻ nhất nhé:

Nếu bạn chỉ đến 1 nước thuộc khối Schgen, bạn phải xin visa tại Đại sứ quán của nước đó.

Casa to Barca, part one: Random men sitting with me in silence while I eat

I’ve always wanted to go to Morocco, so when I got to Senegal and was putzing around on the internet, as one does, and discovered that flights from Dakar to Casablanca were only like $100 I decided I was going to make it happen before my Fulbright was over. Then, when I was in the planning in my head but not actually scouring travel blogs and booking stuff stage, I downloaded VirtualBox and started running Windows parallel on my Mac (see an earlier post about that) and the default background for Windows was a photo of a beautiful landscape in a magical-looking place. I did some image-based searches and discovered that place was Ronda, a small city in the southernmost Spanish province, Andalucía. So I decided I would go there too. Ronda is indeed a magical place, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

This trip was a bit more than two weeks total so these posts might be a bit long, so I’m going to divide them up into smaller parts. I’ve already posted some of my favorite pictures on Wanderlust and will be uploading a few more as well as some videos shortly.

So! I flew into Casablanca, which I had heard was nothing special from a touristic perspective so I just went to see the big famous mosque, Mosquée Hassan II, hung out in a café for a bit and then took the bus to Marrakech. I flew through Madrid to get to Casablanca (ironically, since later I went to Spain but not Madrid) and I realized while I was tying to sleep on the couch at Starbucks that the last time I was in the Madrid airport was when I was leaving Senegal in 2014. It was raining when I got there, which was bizarre because I hadn’t seen rain in at least seven months (since the rainy season here hasn’t started yet).

Anyway, my taxi from the airport took me right to Mosquée Hassan II. They are not messing around with that thing, it is absolutely one of the largest and most beautiful structures I have ever seen. I happened to be there at the call to prayer, which was deafening from directly below the minaret but I love me a good call to prayer so that was a bonus. I spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out in a café in the main plaza, marveling both at how I seemed to be the only woman sitting at a sidewalk café out of the hundreds of patrons around the plaza and also at how if I didn’t know where I was and someone told me I was in Europe I wouldn’t have thought twice about it. Seriously, Casablanca looks and feels so European. Then I went to the bus station and was totally mind blown by how fancy it was and then was even more mind blown by the bus I took to Marrakech, it had the most leg room I’ve ever had traveling in something that wasn’t a train and maybe even then and each seat was like a small lazy boy recliner with like a foot rest thing that popped up and everything. I guess since I was coming from the Senegalese context I was expecting Moroccan travel to be a bit more similar to the sept-places and mini-buses of Senegal and perhaps that was unfair or presumptive but man, was I wrong. To be fair, even once I got to Spain I kept almost burning myself in the shower because it never occurred to me that there might be hot water. I get so wrapped up in however/wherever I’m living.

Marrakech was kind of meh. The proverbial ‘everyone’ is always like “obviously Marrakech is a must for any trip to Morocco” but everything was the exact same color (seriously, by law everything has to be a terra-cotta orangey color because otherwise sandstorms make the buildings too dirty) and the medina is cool but parts of the newer part of the city kind of look like when rich suburbs try to give their “downtown” that “downtown” feel by unnecessarily putting the shops and restaurants into strips and the parking lots in the back, but all the stores and restaurants are still chains and you’re like “well, you tried”. There was even a Fudruckers. Like. What?  What even is Fudruckers? But I digress. 

Like I said, the medina was cool as always – every mid-size to large Moroccan city has a ‘medina’, or at least it would seem to me that’s the case, which is basically the “old city” and generally only accessible to pedestrians (except in Marrakech motorbikes were allowed which meant that my life flashed before my eyes every two minutes, it’s okay though it made up for the uniformity of color in the excitement department). The medinas are always labyrinthine and full of narrow alleys and little maze-like paths with vendors selling sweets and tea and scarves and oils and accordingly they’re generally the main tourist attraction. Plus all the cool monuments and mosques are usually inside the medina. The Marrakech medina was the same color as the rest of the city, but since it was my first medina I enjoyed wandering around, until I got to the souks, or market area, which is when I realized what a couple of my friends who had been to Morocco meant when they said that Marrakech is mostly for tourists to shop. In the middle of all of this is a huge square that has at least 50 of the exact same—seriously, they’re all identical—juice stands set up in rows in the middle surrounded by some ladies doing henna on little benches under umbrellas and snake charmers playing for giant cobras which were just casually hanging out on the street which seemed like a good idea. I got a lot of juice from those stands, it was so good and it was so hot outside, but it was always a bit stressful because when you get close they all start yelling and trying to get you to come to their stand but since there is no distinguishable difference between them it’s hard to choose and I would think okay I should go to the first guy I make eye contact with but then it was always too much pressure and I felt bad for the guys that I didn’t buy juice from. As I write this I’m realizing that maybe that’s the point…

The highlight in Marrakech was actually my hostel, which was right in the center of the medina and was exactly how I would picture a hostel in Morocco. It was ‘riad’ style, which meant it had an open air ‘courtyard’ in the middle and then each floor looked down into that, except instead of a garden in the ‘courtyard’ as is required to be an actual ‘riad’ it was a bunch of rugs and cushions and low tables and the whole place was dimly lit with those metal lanterns with the holes punched in them in cool patterns. When I got there I knocked on the door and the guy who opened it immediately said “Kyla?” which surprised me and then he gave me my first thé a la menthe (mint tea, Moroccan signature, so good) and some weird things that were either crackers or cookies. There were only two other people there, a Congolese guy who appeared to be living there while he worked at a travel company call center (probably practical, the place only cost like 3 euros a night) and a Slovakian guy who was touring the world on his motorcycle.

While exploring, I came across a café where you could also get henna, which I did because I missed having henna on my hands and arms all the time like I did in India since the girls would practice on me. Then I had my first ‘Moroccan crepe’ from a lady making them on the street, she even put an egg in mine for me and made me a little sandwich and I had that with some tea for lunch for a dollar. Thus began my love affair with Moroccan crepes.

To get to my next destination, Imlil, up in the Atlas mountains about an hour and a half outside Marrakech, I took a ‘grand taxi’ which is as close as you’re going to get to a Moroccan sept-place except it’s a 2013 model Toyota minivan and it only seats six which means that being in the way back doesn’t break both your neck and your spirit which was good since I was in the way back. As you drive out of Marrakech the mountains quickly come into sight behind the clouds and then all of a sudden you go from the desert to the forest and mountains so fast that I actually missed it because I was selecting a podcast to listen to.

Imlil is tiny and quiet, most people use it as a base to climb Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in the Atlas, which I did not have the time nor the gear to do. So instead I decided to try to find this waterfall that I had heard tell about. However all this hear-tell had not included the factoid that there are in fact two waterfalls, one which is about a mile up the mountain and the other which is about 20 miles up the mountain. So, long after I had passed the impossible-to-see turnoff for the path to the waterfall I was actually looking for, people I was passing in the little villages and trekking teams with their mules were telling me “yeah, yeah, just keep going you’ll come to the waterfall”. Eventually it had been several hours and I sat down on a rock and said to myself okay, you’ve definitely walked more than a mile at this point. Since the hike had been lovely so far, with great mountain views complete with bubbling springs and wildflowers, I decided to just backtrack. I made a pit stop at a rooftop restaurant I came across in a little village that seemed entirely dedicated to housing trekkers preparing for the ascent, except I was the only person there so when I asked the guy hanging out at the bottom of the stairs if the restaurant was open he looked at me like I had just asked him to marry him for a second and then recovered and said uh yeah sure and led me upstairs to the terrace which had a stunning view but all the chairs were on top of the tables and he scrambled to put them down and then came over and asked what I wanted to eat and I said well what do you have and he was like well what would you like and I was like uh do you have tagine and he said no, we only have Berber omelets, which seemed pretty straightforward so I got that. No regrets there, turns out Berber omelets are really good—they’re basically deep-dish omelets made in a tagine (the cone shaped thing that they make Moroccan food in) with tomatoes and onions and all kinds of yummy spices.

They guy who brought the omelet upstairs, not the same guy as before, put the omelet down in front of me and then pulled up a chair and sat sort of across from me and said absolutely nothing for like five minutes before getting up and leaving while I stared with great determination at the omelet waiting for it to cool down a bit which was really strange but turned out to be a theme in Imlil. When I got back to my hotel, which I had wisely chosen based on the quality of the roof top terrace and view (10/10, plus my room was also on the roof so all I had to do was step outside to enjoy it) I took my first hot shower which was super exciting and then sat outside for dinner, which was vegetable soup and then a vegetable and chicken tagine that was as breathtaking as the view, the guy who seemed to be the sole person running the place also sat silently adjacent to me while I ate for the most amount of time possible without me exploding from confusion and awkwardness before getting up and leaving. I always thought it was annoying and invasive when men outside of a normal social setting in which such behavior would be acceptable (i.e. a party) asserted their ‘right’ to my time and attention but my god this was so much weirder.

But anyway to get back to my hike, I was just about back to town when I saw out of the corner of my eye a small path going straight down next to me and a tiny sign that said “waterfall” with an arrow…and so I actually did find the original waterfall, which was full of day trippers from Marrakech and some industrious locals had set up a little restaurant on the rocks next to it and everything. I took a different way back, following the irrigation canals down to the main street.

The next day I was pretty tired so I mostly hung out on the roof and read and ate more tagine and Moroccan crepes and drank tea, but I also spent a few hours trying to find and eventually finding the radio tower, to get the panoramic view of the valley. One would think that since you can see the radio tower from almost everywhere it wouldn’t be hard to get to but one would be wrong. I spent a lot of time making false starts up the steep rocky hill below it before I finally found the actual “path” that led up there, and when I got up there I couldn’t stay long because despite the view being beautiful it was so windy that I couldn’t stand up during one of the gusts because of a legitimate and well founded fear that it would blow me clear off the top of the mountain. The next day I was heading to Fez and I was a little bit stressed because my train was at 10:45 from Marrakech and it would take about an hour and a half to get there and you have to wait for the Grand Taxis to fill up before they leave which could take five minutes or an hour so I got to the station/town parking lot as early as I could and I walked in and told the guy who had a clipboard and reflective vest and therefore seemed to be in charge I was going to Marrakech and before he could even say anything another older white guy who was getting into a car said “we can take you, we’re leaving now” so I got a free ride straight to the train station from a Montenegrin man and his daughter. Funny how things just work out that. Continuing the trend of things working out, I got to the station and my Moroccan friend had advised me that I should switch out my second class train ticket for first class one since it was usually only a few dollars more and you were guaranteed a seat and it was much more comfortable for the kind of 9 hour ride I was about to do, so I decided to take his advice. I got my new ticket and then went and got a coffee at the McDonald’s in the station and waited to board. When I threw my coffee away I also threw away my old second class ticket because that made sense to me and I can’t read Arabic so I did not know that it said on my new ticket that it was only valid alongside my old one. However the ticket collector on the train could read Arabic and so just when I was settling in to my comfy first class train car and celebrating my good fortune he took my ticket and goes “where’s the other ticket” to which my only response was “uh”. Long story short, he said I had to buy the second class ticket again, which had been $20 and I was basically beginning him to have mercy, like how could I have known?? and so he literally gets on the phone, calls someone back at the train station and has them look in the trash at the McDonald’s, but they don’t find it so in great agony I bought the ticket again. Then the very, very nice older lady sitting across from me felt bad and was like it’s okay I would have done the same thing, you couldn’t have known and then she reached into her purse and pulled out the equivalent of ten dollars and insisted that I take it because she didn’t want my trip in Morocco to be stained by having to buy the ticket again. Then when I came back from the bathroom I discovered that her daughter, who was sitting next to me, had bought me a juice from the food cart guy. Traveling is humbling.

Năm 1980, lãnh đạo Trung Quốc thời đó - Đặng Tiểu Bình chỉ định Thâm Quyến sẽ là đặc khu đầu tiên trong nhóm năm đặc khu kinh tế của nước này. Chính phủ Trung Quốc đã giảm hoặc xóa bỏ thuế nhập khẩu, khuyến khích đầu tư nước ngoài, thành lập doanh nghiệp tư nhân, áp dụng công nghệ và khoa học để thúc đẩy tăng trưởng kinh tế - kỹ thuật. Đặc khu sử dụng hệ thống quy định linh hoạt, nhằm giúp Trung Quốc phát triển theo hướng xuất khẩu. Đây được đánh giá là một trong những quyết định thử nghiệm kinh tế táo bạo nhất khi đó.

Thành quả của mô hình này rất lớn, và xuất hiện gần như ngay lập tức. Trong những năm sau đó, Thâm Quyến tăng trưởng với tốc độ chóng mặt. Từ một làng chài 30.000 dân sống rải rác trong các ngôi làng nhỏ, giai đoạn 1978 - 2014, GDP thành phố này tăng 24.500%. Đến năm 2016, dân số ở đây đã đạt gần 12 triệu người. Năm ngoái, GDP Thâm Quyến lên gần 340 tỷ USD nhờ các ngành công nghệ cao bùng nổ, như Internet, công nghệ sinh học và viễn thông.

Theo Forbes, Thâm Quyến hiện là một trung tâm công nghệ tầm cỡ thế giới, có sàn chứng khoán Thâm Quyến và là một trong những trung tâm tài chính bận rộn nhất toàn cầu. Đến cuối năm 2017, thành phố này đã có 3 triệu doanh nghiệp đăng ký hoạt động.

2. Các tiểu vương quốc Arab thống nhất (UAE)

Các khu vực kinh tế tự do (FEZ) cũng là câu chuyện thành công nổi bật của UAE, đóng vai trò quan trọng trong chiến lược đa dạng hóa nền kinh tế của nước này từ giữa thập niên 80, Gulf News cho biết. Hiện tại, UAE có gần 50 FEZ, gồm 27 tại Dubai, 7 tại Abu Dhabi và 11 ở các tiểu quốc còn lại. Bộ Kinh tế UAE năm 2014 cho biết khoảng 33% giao dịch phi dầu mỏ tại nước này là từ các FEZ.

Mỗi FEZ chỉ tập trung vào một số ngành nghề, như Trung tâm Tài chính Dubai phù hợp với ngân hàng, doanh nghiệp tài chính, bảo hiểm, quản lý tài sản. Các ưu đãi nổi bật trong FEZ ở UAE là cho phép sở hữu nước ngoài 100%, miễn thuế thu nhập cá nhân và doanh nghiệp, thủ tục nhanh chóng, không rào cản và hạn ngạch thương mại, được chuyển 100% vốn và lợi nhuận về nước, nguồn bất động sản cho thuê hoặc bán cũng rất dồi dào. Những chính sách này đã khuyến khích đầu tư nước ngoài, thúc đẩy khởi nghiệp và tạo ra lượng việc làm khổng lồ.

FEZ đã tạo ra nhiều trung tâm thương mại giàu có tại UAE. Những địa điểm như Trung tâm Tài chính Quốc tế Dubai, Khu vực Tự do Jebel Ali, Dubai Internet City, Dubai Healthcare City đều khá nổi tiếng trên thế giới.

Tại Dubai, FEZ đóng vai trò thiết yếu trong nền kinh tế tiểu quốc này. Năm 2015, FEZ đóng góp 32% tổng thương mại trực tiếp của Dubai. Tính đến hết năm đó, Dubai có hơn 20.000 doanh nghiệp hoạt động trong các FEZ, tạo ra gần 100.000 việc làm tại mỗi nơi.

Tương tự, FEZ cũng là mảnh ghép quan trọng trong Tầm nhìn Kinh tế 2030 của Abu Dhabi, nhờ khả năng thu hút đầu tư nước ngoài. Năm 2004, họ thành lập ZonesCorp để quản lý và phát triển các FEZ trong tiểu quốc. Đến năm 2014, tập đoàn này đã tạo ra 6 khu công nghiệp tầm cỡ thế giới với diện tích hơn 140 km2, đóng góp gần nửa GDP ngành sản xuất của Abu Dhabi.

3. Hàn Quốc

Mô hình Khu Kinh tế Tự do (FEZ) của Hàn Quốc cũng được đánh giá thành công, nhờ kết hợp được với nền kinh tế trong nước. Họ đã củng cố được mối liên kết giữa các công ty trong đặc khu với các doanh nghiệp địa phương.

Hàn Quốc hiện có 8 FEZ rải rác khắp cả nước để đáp ứng nhu cầu doanh nghiệp, gồm Incheon, Busan-Jinhae, Gwangyang, Hoàng Hải, Daegu-Gyeongbuk, Bờ Đông, Chungbuk và Saemangeum-Gunsan. FEZ là bằng chứng cho thấy sự hợp lực giữa các ngành công nghiệp khác nhau tại đây. 

Nhiều khu kinh tế của nước này vẫn còn đang phát triển. Chính phủ Hàn Quốc đã đổ vào đây hàng tỷ USD nhằm xây dựng cơ sở hạ tầng hỗ trợ các ngành công nghệ cao, kinh tế quốc tế, giải trí và du lịch. Hệ thống giao thông và cơ sở hạ tầng của nước này thường được coi là lợi thế chính giúp các doanh nghiệp giảm chi phí vận hành, rút ngắn thời gian giao hàng và cải thiện dịch vụ khách hàng.

4. Philippines

Philippines bắt đầu phát triển các đặc khu kinh tế từ giữa thập niên 90, sau khi  Luật Đặc khu Kinh tế được thông qua năm 1995. Các đặc khu được quản lý bởi PEZA (Cơ quan quản lý Khu kinh tế Philippines). Những ưu đãi nổi bật ở đây là miễn giảm thuế thu nhập tối đa 8 năm; miễn thuế nhập khẩu thiết bị, phụ tùng, linh kiện; miễn phí trữ hàng ở cảng, thuế xuất khẩu; thủ tục hải quan đơn giản. Hiện tại, Philippines có khoảng gần 380 khu kinh tế, tập trung vào các ngành sản xuất, công nghệ thông tin, du lịch, du lịch kết hợp y tế và công nghiệp - nông nghiệp.

Theo Rappler, các đặc khu này đã giúp cải thiện khả năng cạnh tranh về môi trường đầu tư của Philippines thông qua các mô hình một cửa, giúp giảm chi phí kinh doanh và khuyến khích thành lập doanh nghiệp tư nhân ở các SEZ. Bên cạnh đó, trong giai đoạn 2006 - 2010, dù FDI vào Philippines giảm 13%, FDI vào các SEZ lại tăng 23%. Giá trị hàng xuất khẩu từ SEZ năm 2009 là 28,9 tỷ USD, tăng so với 19,5 tỷ USD năm 2001. Con số này tại các doanh nghiệp không thuộc SEZ lại giảm mạnh, về 4,3 tỷ USD.

Số nhân viên tại SEZ cũng tăng 10% mỗi năm giai đoạn 2001 - 2010, lên hơn 730.000 người. Kỹ năng của lao động trong SEZ, đặc biệt trong ngành điện tử, cũng được đánh giá có cải thiện đáng kể.

5. Ấn Độ

Thủ tướng Ấn Độ - Narendra Modi đặt rất nhiều kỳ vọng vào sáng kiến Make in India, nhằm biến Ấn Độ thành trung tâm sản xuất toàn cầu. Trong đó, các đặc khu kinh tế (SEZ) - lấy cảm hứng từ sự thành công của Trung Quốc - sẽ là trọng tâm thu hút nhà đầu tư ngoại. Tuy nhiên, kế hoạch này đã không thành công như mong đợi.

Từ sau Luật Đặc khu Kinh tế tháng 6/2005, tính đến 2014, hơn 560 đặc khu đã được cấp phép. Tuy nhiên, đến năm 2015, chỉ khoảng gần 200 là hoạt động thực sự. Trong đó, rất nhiều SEZ không hoạt động hết công suất.

Giai đoạn 2013 - 2014, tổng xuất khẩu từ các SEZ chỉ là 82,4 tỷ USD, bằng một phần tư tổng xuất khẩu của Ấn Độ. Giới phân tích đánh giá số liệu này cho thấy SEZ rõ ràng không phải nguồn xuất khẩu chính của Ấn Độ.

Tổng lao động trong các SEZ, tính đến năm 2014, là hơn 1,2 triệu người. So với số liệu tính đến năm 2009, con số này giảm khoảng nửa triệu. Đóng góp của các SEZ vào xuất khẩu cả nước cũng được dự báo giảm. Tổng diện tích các SEZ chỉ là hơn 61.000 ha. Trong khi riêng Thâm Quyến (Trung Quốc) đã là 49.300 ha.

Giới phân tích đã chỉ ra nhiều nguyên nhân khiến mô hình đặc khu tại Ấn Độ thất bại. Năm 2011-2012, nước này rút một số ưu đãi thuế cho doanh nghiệp và nhà thầu xây dựng, với lý do nhiều công ty tận dụng các chính sách này sai mục đích. Việc này đã khiến nhiều doanh nghiệp mất hứng. Thứ hai là thiếu cơ sở hạ tầng bổ sung, như điện, đường, cầu, cảng. Đây là điều mà Trung Quốc đã làm khá tốt. Nước này cũng gặp khó khăn trong việc lấy đất từ người dân để phát triển SEZ và thiếu ưu đãi cho người lao động làm việc tại đây.

6. Châu Phi

Châu Phi là ví dụ điển hình về sự thất bại của rất nhiều đặc khu kinh tế. Thập niên 90, chính phủ Nigeria rót khoản đầu tư khổng lồ vào khu kinh tế tự do trọng điểm ở Calabar. Mục tiêu của họ là thu hút FDI vào sản xuất để hỗ trợ quá trình đa dạng hóa nền kinh tế. Tuy nhiên, bất chấp tiền bạc và nỗ lực đổ vào đây, hơn một thập kỷ sau, chỉ có một số công ty hoạt động trong SEZ. Thậm chí, chỉ vài công ty trong số đó thực sự sản xuất.

Tương tự, Ghana cũng lập khu kinh tế tự do giữa thập niên 90, với dự án trọng điểm ở Tema. Họ muốn thu hút FDI toàn cầu và định vị bản thân là trung tâm sản xuất và thương mại trong khu vực, tập trung vào ngành dệt may và ICT. Thời gian đầu, Ghana cũng rất chật vật thu hút đầu tư.

Còn ở Kenya, khu chế xuất sau gần 20 năm hoạt động, chỉ xuất khẩu được hơn 400 triệu USD năm 2008. Các khu kinh tế tự do ở Nigeria, Senegal và Tanazania còn tệ hơn, với tỷ lệ đóng góp vào xuất khẩu cả nước rất hạn chế.

Thành công của SEZ tại châu Phi chỉ giới hạn ở vài quốc gia, như Mauritius, Lesotho, Nam Phi, Madagascar và Ghana. Còn rất nhiều nước khác, gồm Nigeria, Senegal, Malawi, Namibia và Mali, SEZ rất chật vật vì nhiều lý do.

Nguyên nhân lớn nhất là thiếu cơ sở hạ tầng. Các SEZ cần phải được kết nối với nền kinh tế toàn cầu. Vì thế, cải thiện cơ sở hạ tầng còn quyết định thành công nhiều hơn là ưu đãi thuế. Rất nhiều khu kinh tế mới tại châu Phi thiếu điện hoặc nằm quá xa cảng. Bên cạnh đó, nhiều SEZ còn thiếu kế hoạch quản lý và chiến lược hiệu quả, hoặc gặp vấn đề về bất ổn chính sách trong nước.

Thậm chí, kể cả khi các chương trình này thành công trong việc thu hút đầu tư, tạo ra việc làm và hàng xuất khẩu, giới quan sát vẫn lo ngại về chất lượng đầu tư và việc làm, cũng như độ bền vững của SEZ tại châu Phi.
