Got all the secret reports in NEO: The world ends with you, so I'm finally laying out my thoughts on it. Also read-more-ing and am gonna do so in the future given Post Size.
This is a pretty good sequel, in the ways it takes the original, and iterates on it. I do wish it was a little more sequel-y in some ways, mostly because I feel like the starting hook is kinda weak as a returning fan. It took me til almost the end of week 2 to actually feel invested, but the moment it hit and delivered it was REALLY worth it each time it did. How do you take something as blunt as the first game and iterate on it? Well, you add some nuance and update the commentary. The digital age and the masks we wear is a good way to do that, and the cherry on top of "life has meaning because of the people in it" iterates well for what is basically Antisocial Human Recovery Game. On the note of humans, this game's supporting cast is really fucking strong. People from 1 come back as supporting members, and we get some standouts in Motoi and Kanon (Kanon my beloved she is in the apartment complex in my brain), and we have Nagi+Beat, and to a much lesser degree Neku in the main party doing it. Nagi especially works imo because she's constantly there and we do see a lot of her as a main party member, but her emotional development isn't really central. She's instead working off everyone else as a pseudo-mentor, emotionally. This is mostly relevant in week 3, but it's still present elsewhere. The music fucking bangs! Again, gets really good in week 3 imo, but I'm a rock/post hardcore kinda girl and this scratches that first itch pretty well. It's kinda poppy rock but I think that works for again, iteration with the pop with some rock from the first game. Shoutouts to, unsurprisingly, Breaking Free, probably my second favorite song from these games (behind Calling), Revelation, DIVIDE, and Unpainted. The game also uses the lyrics in its songs to elevate scenes/reinforce things the game wants you to feel/know REALLY well. I'm generally a fan of in-your-face things and this delivers hard there. I do wish this game was a little more driven by its characters before the end, because something I liked about the first was how strongly driven it was by its characters, but the plot here (especially with the information granted by the secret reports) is good enough I'm not bent out of shape about it? It's a personal preference thing but this is my personal preference zone. Again, still a good plot, it just took so long for me to get invested as opposed to the first game's strength with the Neku+Shiki opening stuff that I do lament that. All in all, even if it took me a hot minute to get through, this game is really fucking nice. It's got good style, a lot of heart, and a message I think that a lot of people could benefit from, especially as we get more and more wound up and isolated by social media's trappings.

Think I'm done with TWEWY now. Ninety-nine point something completed and I cbf persisting with grinding it to 100% for the sake of it, so that's a wrap!
Such a phenomenal game. Defs going to pick up the sequel at some point.
Onward to Chrono Trigger!
but first a bit of Elite Beat Agents as a palate cleanser

The first TWEWY game was the best
I always tell people that I recommend this series to to play the original on the DS. Of course, they hardly listen to me, but I stand my ground on this.
The gameplay of the original TWEWY was built for the DS, unlike many DS titles that simply allowed for use of the touch screen. It has left-handed friendly controls, and multiple different play styles on several levels for players to play however they wish.
The story aside (it's amazing, but I don't want to spoil it), The gameplay is what draws me in every time I replay it. It's not easy, it provides a challenge no matter how you play, but it's so satisfying.
On the bottom screen, you control Neku and attack with pins you acquire throughout the game. Each pin has a different command associated with it (press and hold, swipe, tap empty space, this is even how you dodge attacks) and is mandatory to master to complete the game.
On the top screen, you control your partner, Shiki, using the ABXY or direction buttons next to the touch screen. This is optional, as you can set your partner to automatically attack on their own, but giving yourself the extra challenge pays off with better combos and higher defensive tactics.
I could go on and on about different mechanics, and I will admit, the first TWEWY had it's flaws. You could only eat so much food a day. You can unlock unlimited eating in the post-game. This is a problem my friends playing on the phone port have faced, but on the Switch or DS you can easily change the date and grind out your stats. Don't worry, the game doesn't even notice!
NEO: TWEWY is good. I enjoyed playing through it, but the gameplay just didn't have the same spark. I felt like I was just mashing buttons the whole time. The atmosphere felt more like I was running through the scramble crossing, eating across Dogonzaka, but the battle mechanics just didn't feel quite as satisfying.
The series as a whole? I love it with my whole being, but nothing can beat the Experience of the original on the DS.
It's easy to pirate the DS version, hell, I only got to play it because I received a pirated copy. I'd recommend getting an R4 if you intend on mass piracy, but used copies go for less if your not ready to sail the high seas. I shilled out for the squeakual after I fell in love with the first.
I played them back to back today, and I can say with certainty that the second made be feel worse after remembering my love for the first.
But yeah PLAY TWEWY IT"S SO GOOOOOD.
#There are gay people in it too#Just look at gay boi jesus#all people who play twewy on the ds receive a kiss from me#it's about the gameplay AND story dawg#TWEWY#the world ends with you#brainrot#nintendo ds#ds games#game reccomendations#neo: the world ends with you#neo: twewy#gameplay review#PLAY TWEWY

NEO: The World Ends With You - Review
Okay so how many of you are familiar with the 2007 game The World Ends With You on the DS?
... Okay, actually a few of you. Now- Who remembers the 2021 sequel NEO: TWEWY?
... Wow, that’s a severe drop off. Especially considering that NEO: TWEWY is a worthy successor.
Summary:
NEO: The World Ends With You is a 2021 game released on the PS4, PC and Switch (which is the version I have). In the game, you return to the city of Shibua three years after the events of TWEWY in the shoes of Rindo Kanabe, an apathetic teen with little connection to others other than his online friend Swallow in Pokemon Go I’m sorry, FanGo. Him and his best friend IRL Fret go out and pick up a suspiciously familiar red and black pin and get involved in a modern fantasy fight.
Where a truck crushes Fret.
...Wait, I’m sorry. Apparently after Rindo ends up in some weird void thing, Fret DOESN’T get squished and they end up in the Reaper’s Game, where they must team up with other Players compete with the opposing teams in order to return to their version of reality or else risk losing and becoming erased from existence.
So, it’s the same basic idea as the original game with the concept of the Reaper’s Game alongside the three weeks of gameplay. And superficially, you’ll follow similar objectives of ‘defeat thing’, ‘solve puzzle’ or ‘beat bad guy’. But the game puts its own spin on these concepts. Puzzles in the game as more about figuring out random details in the background and sorting them out and both of the combat orienated objectives are heavily affected by a major addition to the game- Rindo can turn back time.
Now before anyone thinks they can use this to save scum bosses or anything-this is a story thing, not directly gameplay. What I mean is that sometimes you’ll be faced with an obstacle that appears seemingly out of the blue and Rindo will turn back time to certain previous events where you can undermine the obstacle and then take them on.
Which I think gives me a good excuse to move onto the gameplay setion.
Gameplay:
Despite TWEWY being well known for its stylish gameplay, utilizing various touch screen commands on the DS to execute attacks while using the D-Pad to fight with your partner on the other screen- NEO: TWEWY might actually have a better combat system.
In the game, you now use certain buttons to perform attacks based on what pins are equipped to your teammates. For example, the A/X button is usually used for mashing a close range attack. After fulfilling a certain condition of the attack- usually ending in a finisher move, get a number of hits or inflict a status condition among others- you get a Beatdrop window where if you hit the enemy in the timeframe you build up your ‘Groove’ for a ‘Mashup’.
‘Mashups’ are basically NEO’s version of Fusion attacks- Super moves that inflict a lot of damage with ‘Groove’ being the counterpart to the fusion stars. But whereas Fusion attacks’ resource could be built up and saved without any kind of loss and just dealt damage to all enemies- Groove can be lost either from not performing a Beatdrop in a while or just from exiting a fight. Meaning that you’re incentivized to play aggressively. Just as well, Mashups also change their properties based on what element was last used to complete a Beatdrop. For example- Fire brings down a giant meteor that leaves behind lingering flames, Electric creates a cage of lightning and Darkness fires razor disks right at the target.
Then you have a ‘Killer Remix’, which at 300% is like Persona’s All Out Attack- dealing pure damage, except by mashing a button for an amount of time. Now, I know it sounds like you should aim for Killer Remixes. Yeah, they dish out a lot of damage...but see, TWEWY has a unique feature. It has a dynamic difficulty setting that can be changed at any time. This affects damage obviously but also enemy aggression and speed alongside increasing your pool of drops. So it’s actually more useful in certain situations to just use a certain Mashup. For more info, check out my friend’s notes on Mashups.
And of course, you’re probably thinking you can button mash to get easy Mashups. Well, don’t. Aside from the fact that the reboot system for Pins has returned too, you get an upgrade to your Beatdrop window where hitting at the right timespan gives you extra Groove with the window changing for each different kind of attack. Also- TWEWY’s enemies, Noise, still do not play by ‘wait your turn.’ They will attack you from off screen a lot if you don’t pay attention so you better keep an eye and finger on the dodge button.
And finally for pins- Certain pins will also have certain special effects. More often than not, they’ll cause more damage in certain scenarios. Like tackling Pins will deal more damage if an enemy is immobilized. You can easily use this to chain together certain pins for massive damage, recovered health or even more Groove. SO make sure to use as many different pins as possible.
As for stuff related to stats and more passive combat elements- You have Stats and Threads. Stats are exactly what you think- they determined how much damage you can take, dish out and reduce through HP, ATK and DEF respectively. Like in most RPGs, Stats can be boosted through equipment, or Threads in TWEWY, along with supplying you with additional buffs. However, said buffs are locked behind a fourth stat- Style. As in, you’ll need a certain amount of Style on the character to access the buff. And unlike in most RPGs- Your stats aside from HP DON’T increase. They only increase through eating food. And you can only eat so much before your character gets full but it gets lowered from going through combat. So another reason to engage with the combat- through grinding, it snowballs into getting easier.
Which you’ll need because the game encourages you to be as low of a level as possible. See, just like the difficulty, your level can also be adjusted. With lower levels equaling less HP but better drop rates. And for certain drops, you’ll want to be at Level 1 with equipment that increases the drop rate because 20x drop rate sounds good until you face an enemy with a pin you want at like....3% chance of dropping. So have fun.
Which is pretty easy, given that the game has an addictive combat loop that’s almost rhymic. Which brings us to-
Music
The original TWEWY was known for its amazing and actually super expansive music thanks to an ingenious trick by the developers to save space on the cartridge. Here’s some sample hits for reference.
... Yeah, pretty bombass huh? Especially since everything I linked was the OG DS version. Fun fact, that ingenious trick i mentioned earlier was formatting the music using the same format for voice lines, which saved space and gave more room for music. Which, if you haven’t caught on from the game’s terminology- is pretty damn important to it.
Which brings me to NEO’s own music. Obviously it’s made in a similar vein to the original, that being pop, techno and rock. But saying that the OG and NEO have the same kind of music is like saying a great specialty can of soda and a well brewed coffee are the same kind of drink. The OG is bold and sweet with a certain smoothness that makes it memorable, especially for something like the DS. But NEO? NEO’s songs are a bit more subdued but in exchange have a greater depth of flavor and feel.
To demonstrate my point, let’s revisit one of my samples. Transformation is a very boastful song, meant to convey an arrogant but powerful enemy. Like a storm that hits you in the face as you struggle to withstand the wind and rain. All conveyed by a loud, consistent guitar that matches the powerful drumbeat alongside a bold, consistent voice.
But NEO’s Remix goes a complete different direction with a suspenseful beginning, bursting into a raging chorus as the guitar enters and the drum picks up, returning to a suspenseful verse but with the guitar remaining as a reminder of the storm before. The background is filled a building chant as tension rises before exploding at the end back into that raging chorus. It transitions to that familiar bridge, repeats one last time before hitting its apex and the verses merge into the background as the chorus rages forth.
Akin to an unmatched force of nature, a storm but evolved, forcing you to ride it out and hope you make it out.
NEO’s songs simply have a better narrative woven into them. Which once more carries us to-
Story and Themes
(Okay, no getting around this- Spoiler Warning)
So, the original TWEWY was also really well known for a well written story with clear and concise themes- themes of the power of thoughts, of learning different perspectives, of reaching out to others and forging connections with people all through Neku’s own personal growth. So, does NEO live up to this legacy?
Yep.
Rindo actually shares a few things in common with Rindo- an obsession with certain pieces of tech (Rindo’s phone and Neku’s...earphones), being rather snarky and easily exasperated (with Rindo tending to keep it to himself) and lacking a real connection to other people in general (Rindo’s due to apathy vs. Neku’s misanthropy).
If you paid attention, you’ll notice that the real difference between Neku and Rindo is that Neku’s flaw is more upfront and active whereas Rindo’s is more subdued and passive. And that’s the point- Rindo is far too passive in his life. He’s a teen who, instead of asserting himself so harshly that he pushes away others, relies on others superficially while never truly bonding with them because of his lack of input. The kid is the definition of ‘indecisive’, just not in a blatant way.
And that’s the really cool part of NEO’s writing- it’s more subdued than the original’s. The name of the series, The World Ends With You, is directly explained by the clear mentor character fairly early on in the original and made it’s point VERY clear. Meanwhile, the name and theme of the series in NEO is more implied and demonstrated through the use of teams as a central driving conflict, forcing Rindo to make connections and shape up not just for his sake but for others as well.
He’s not the only example. The first person he truly recruits is the emotional fangirl Nagi, who is outwardly very dorky and expressive but shows a keen insight into people’s emotions. If you pay attention to her reactions and interactions with others- she tends to like people who are more open with themselves while acting cold towards those who aren’t and distant to those who hide a villainous side to them.
Or, to dig up someone who isn’t a main character- the leader of one of the opposing teams, Kanon. At first, she acts as a modern kind of Femme Fatale- an exceptional attractive woman who emphasizes such to try and take advantage of others, like how she steals Rindo and Fret’s points in the first week. But as time goes on, she turns out to be one of the more honorable and fair characters, to the point of being a major ally later on.
All in all, it’s actually quite engaging. Now, is there anything else to add onto here? ... Oh yeah.
Visuals
It’s the OG game but in 3D, using perspective and the new 3D to make Shibuya look truly enormous. As in, the 104 Building now clearly towers over the player now.
... Hey, TWEWY’s original graphics were damn on point. Not much can be improved. Especially for a game that has to run on the Switch.
Conclusion
Look, if you think this is expansive or anything approaching the sort- it really isn’t. There is so much more to discuss about the combat, themes and music. There’s even elements I didn’t bring up, like how the theme of teamwork is further emphasized through a perk web-system called a ‘Social Network’ that gradually expands as you progress through the game, showcasing how you’ve helped and affected others. It’s just that I feel like this is the proper way to introduce you to the game. Because I genuinely want people to pick up and try out NEO. It’s criminally underrated and I think the effort and passion that went into it deserves to be seen and recognized.
Seriously- The game is 28 bucks on Amazon. Go get it.

Top five twewy characters!
PUGH
neku
minamimoto
beat
fret
nagi
kinda hard since a lot of the characters are wonderful!!! even the weaker ones aren’t bad and more “they didn’t have enough time to shine” such as hishima. they tend to be reapers since they either die or kinda just hang around but they all at least have some fun dialogue or moments surrounding them. best characters definitely end up being party members (and minamimoto because. c’mon) since you spend the most time with them, which makes sense given the direction and themes of both games :D
#heck while the anime was just a speed run of twewy’s plot it did have great moments for one off characters which i respect#eri’s already likable but her getting flowers for shiki fucking hurt#and both sota and nao deserved a lot more focus i’m glad they got some#reaper review guy is definitely the goat tho. just in general#shantien answers

Shibuya Fish Tank
It's unfinished so the title may not be clear, but imagine an animated version with the water rippling in the sky, the Composer's attention being drawn away as if someone is calling him, and then vanishing, the ripples fading. All the while Shibuya's people moving about, living their lives.

Announcing the Mewse Designer!
Ever wanted to accessorize your own Mr. Mew? Modify the design just a bit?
Now you can with the Mewse Designer on meiker.io to make your very own!
The Mewse Designer contains accessories from almost all main named characters in both TWEWY and NTWEWY, so it has accessories that can be considered spoilers. Item names aren't visible so it's only the images. There are a couple accessories that aren't from the games so don't worry if you don't recognize them all.
More additions will come in the future! The current release focuses on neck, face and arm accessories. Further explanation about Meiker below for those who aren't familiar with it.
If you are on mobile it's easier to navigate in landscape but easier to modify the item position/colors (if available) in portrait.
Some items have color options. A paint brush icon will appear on the left side when an item has them, such as Kariya's glasses. Click the icon to pick a different color option.
Some items can have their position adjusted. A 4 directional arrow will appear on the left hand side, such as most glasses, eyes, mouth and arm accessories. Click on it to activate it and then tap the directional arrows in the bottom left corner to move it.
Some items are "Stamps" which are layered overtop of all other layers in the order you add them. They are a category that has a paw print in the top left corner such as the speech bubbles and pins. They can be flipped (top left, bi-directional arrow), rotated (top of the stamp), and resized (bottom right of the stamp). They can be removed by clicking on the trash can in the bottom right.

the usage of ‘nort’ as a verb within the fandom feels so natural and universally accepted and understood it’s easy to forget it’s not canon at all and in the actual games they’re like ‘he used them as a vessel’ or ‘he placed a fragment of his heart inside theirs to influence/control them as his puppets’ or some long-winded nerdy explanation. nah son. he norted them.

my favorite thing in sky is when you become friends with someone and then they take your hand and just start taking you somewhere. where are we going? idk, but this is my bestie now, and i trust them. if we run into a dark dragon and get attacked, well, at least we're doing it together!

it’s about being bitter and alone for years, isolating yourself form the world and other people because you’ve learned that friendship hurts, connection hurts, and no one would understand you anyways, right? so why bother? no one gets it.
and then! then you meet someone who does understand you. who does get it. and you fucking hate him. he is the most callous, selfish, insufferable asshole you’ve ever met but he fucking understands you better than anyone else ever has and you hate it. you hate that you see yourself in him because you don’t want to be like that anymore. you’ve grown, you’ve changed, is that really who you are? or who you were? because underneath all of that cruelness, you hold similar ideas about the world, but where you’ve started to look up and see the good in that world, he’s firmly stuck in the opposite direction.
this is what you could have become, and you realize it’s not what you want to be.
hnnnnn i’m going to shred a log between my teeth like i’m a woodchipper.

for a game from 2007 with no explicit rep, twewy sure is queer as hell. one of the main characters is heavily gay-coded and literally every other mc can easily be read as queer in some way, from rhyme being referred to as “gender non-specific or something in the middle” during an interview, beat having a deadname and being considered a disappointment to his family, shiki’s insecurity manifesting in her inhabiting a body that literally isn’t hers, neku... okay, i actually can’t explain why he comes across so strongly as bi, but he does. and i think that’s all really, really cool.
also the fact that joshua’s character still holds up, even in 2022, is pretty fucking incredible. like, "gay-coded villain who constantly hits on the main character” is just straight-up a homophobic trope, but he’s not a homophobic caricature somehow. despite being very enigmatic, his character is handled with the same respect as everyone else’s and, importantly, he’s never portrayed as creepy or predatory. not even when we find out that he is the villain and he did kill neku.
idk. i guess i’m just glad that i can still enjoy twewy in 2022 without a blatant homophobic elephant in the room knocking shit over.

Quick question, Coco’s noise in A New Day are referred to as Dissonance Noise in the EN Localization. What are they referred to as in Japanese? (Do A New Day and NEO share the same terminology for dissonance in JP?)
Thanks for the ask! They share the same or similar enough meaning but the words for Dissonance are different.
Coco's Noise are called ディゾナンスノイズ, "dizonansu noizu", spelt using katakana, using the English word for "dissonance".
ディソナンス グリズ Dissonance Grizz(ly)
The hint book you get also calls them Dissonance Noise using katakana as well.

@cardhoarder asked:
In the original twewy, what is the original Japanese for the prince's 'F this' blog? The joke makes sense in English but I don't think it works in Japanese in the same way.
Thanks for the ask! Let's take a look.

NTWEWY: Censoring of God
No this isn't a huge story or plot element that got censored, but it might be worth noting there are two places where the word God in Japanese has been removed in English. One case might be lore related but it depends on how you want to view it.
There will be minor spoilers for 100% completion, if that concerns you, and will be looking at one English subbed line from the anime!
Master Post of EN/JP Comparisons
Uber Pins
In TWEWY these are like the Angel/Reaper where you were limited to how many you could equip. These ranks are called the same in EN and JP.
In NEO, we got Uber Pins. "Super" Pins.
Kinda odd. Wasn't certain if these were on the same level as Angel/Reaper pins in TWEWY but I supposed in EN if they wanted to combine the Angel/Reaper class, this would be ok.
Well in Japanese they're 神クラスバッジ . "God Class (Badges) Pins"

@purplelea You get it.
Yeah I'm totally normal about how Mr. H has all the cat symbolism in the first game and is absent in the second and instead of gaitito we have Gatto Nero as the cat brand and it's spoken about in the same fervent praise as CAT work in the first game and Mr. H was the cat because the cat was tricked out of the zodiac but all the reapers are zodiac animals, Mr. H is just his own kind of special step removed, and now in the second game all that imagery is on Shiki. Shiki the not-quite-a-reaper. Shiki the creative pulse of the city. Shiki the guardian.

You know what?
I will share some of my kh headcanons here(+ some au ability stuff )
Marluxia/Lauriam: when he feels strong emotions flowers bloom from his hair, he also has a unfortunate ability, that everytime he touches something directly with his hands, it starts to rot. Thus he always wears gloves
Larxene/erlena: has different lighting burn marks around her body, and she loves cats but is allergic to them (chirithys dont count). Elrena also like sewing stuff.
Axel/lea: he has( similar to larxene)burn marks around his body
Vanitas: he may be a being of "darkness" but hes actually scared of the dark, dont put him into a completely dark room he will start crying.
Vexen/even: his body is constantly cold, when he isnt wearing his cloak , he wears warm clothing to regulate his body temperature
Zexion/ienzo: he keeps exhausting his body to the extreme, a bad habit ,that he obtained from zexion who never cared about his own well being. Ienzo also used to make small dolls resembling the radiant garden crew(aka his family)
Damn i usually have alot more headcanons rotating in my head, now i cant think of any anymore...

Riku being gay is more Canon then HC
The reason why I have trouble saying I headcanon Riku as gay is because there is a LOT of evidence— text evidence from the games he is.
Like shipping Soriku or Zemyx is HC. Those ships are stated the couples aren't together yet. But Riku being gay is actually implied through various scenes.
I'm not even including the novels and manga where he shows obvious signs of being gay and liking Sora—which some people consider not canon, but they were also reviewed and approved by Nomura sooo 🤷
But in the games there is a lot of evidence especially looking at Japanese correct translations that imply he is not into girls, he is gay. He loves his best friend.
In the Eng DDD with the TWEWY characters, Riku's interaction with Shiki.
He get almost offended when Shiki says, Aren't you my knight in shining armor?
Riku responds by saying, "Kn-knnight!? You got the wrong idea!"
He seems upset that a girl— someone thinks he is into her.
Then she seems to realize he's either gay or haven't been out much.
Personally I don't mind this change.
In the Japanese version he tells her, Not that kind of knight.
It is still gay and she even calls him Knight Sama 😆
Another example is all the Riku Replicas displaying emotions and feelings to Sora
Then in DDD Riku's conversations with Esmeralda and Quasimodo in the Notre Dame world is basically implying he is gay.
Final Notes:
Also Riku refer to Sora several times in JPN version a phrase, Taisetsunahito which means precious person and he uses it a LOT like a ton and it's not just lightly. It could be seen romantic because other characters use it. But the English translation team has trouble translating get phrase.
He also calls Sora Aitsu which means some guy and it can have romantic interest involved.
Shipping Riku with Sora is head canon, other things is not.
I can give so many more examples but the point is made. Like Riku was Jealous in KH2 and offered him a papou fruit to see if he might be interested the same way, and then rubs it off as a joke.
And like it's fine if someone doesn't ship it and I can see why someone might ship something else.
