For the first time in 60 years, the Sag Harbor oceanfront cottage and octagonal writing retreat where John Steinbeck wrote The Winter of Our Discontent and Travels With Charley are for sale, priced at $16.75 million. It was Steinbeck’s self-described “Eden,” his home from 1955 until he died in 1968.

One of America’s most important writers with both a Nobel and Pulitzer Prize, Steinbeck’s classic works include the novella Of Mice and Men (his dog chewed up the original manuscript) and the novels Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden.

John spent most of his early life in Southern California where he worked odd jobs, including farmworker, handyman, and tour guide before his success as a writer in his early 30s. Many of his best works were inspired by the people of California and from the trips he took across the United States.

Although California was his home state where there is a National Steinbeck Center Museum and where his Salinas boyhood home has been restored and open to the public, Steinbeck moved to New York in 1941, switching between New York City and Long Island’s Sag Harbor. At first a vacation and weekend getaway, in 1955, Steinbeck bought a Sag Harbor waterfront cottage, the place he called “my little fishing place,” where he stayed for most of the rest of his life.

With almost two acres and views over Morris Cove and Upper Sag Harbor Cove, Steinbeck built a writing hut where he could work with no distractions and water views over Morris Cove and Upper Sag Harbor. The writing hut is still intact and carefully preserved much as it was when Steinbeck left with his dog in 1960 to begin his 10,000-mile road trip that became Travels with Charley.

Steinbeck took a huge interest in Sag Harbor, helping to start the town’s annual whaling festival and the landmark Beebe Windmill construction, where the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce is now located. In 2019, Sag Harbor dedicated a town park in his name.

Steinbeck’s beloved cottage and writing hut are located on 586 feet of waterfront on two sides with emerald lawn and a scattering of old-growth shade trees, the property includes a pool, which Steinbeck referred to as his “cement pond,” a guest house, and one of his favorite things: a 60-foot pier from which he enjoyed fishing.

The main cottage has two bedrooms, two baths and a large stone fireplace in the living room, which has beamed cathedral ceilings. The Steinbecks created a library loft above the living room. Throughout the cottage are many windows and French doors that let sunlight spill across the rooms. The next owner will be able to sit in the writer’s hut rereading Steinbeck’s novels that were penciled on a yellow pad while sitting in this very spot.

Sag Harbor and its Hamptons surrounds have long been a celebrity magnet. Richard Gere, Jimmy Buffett, Howard Stern and Paul Simon are a few of the A-listers who are happy homeowners in the Hamptons.

But actually the person to blame is Langsford Hastings. He had written a book about his explorations of the west, The Emmigrants Guide to Oregon and California, and was sizing up those territories for Americans settlers. Didnt matter to him that Native Americans and Mexicans were already living there. He started talking to a guy named John Sutter about his plan to settle the west for profit off of rich Yankees investing in that sweet California real estate. The problem was, most settlers were heading for Oregon, not California. Luckily for him, the Emigrants Guide mentioned a shortcut to California that would chop off hundreds of miles off an already grueling trip.

But this asshole had never even taken this shortcut he was trying to convince thousands upon thousands of unwitting travelers to take. But he set out anyways to head off settlers and convince them to take his shortcut to California rather than Oregon. He brought along this guy named Jim Clyman and they both soon realized that Hasting’s “shortcut” fucking sucked. It was actually twice as long as Hasting said it was, and went though the Wasatch Mountains. When the pair arrived at Fort Laramie, Hastings kept going but Clyman stayed behind. Evetually the Donners and the Reeds arrived. Clyman actually was war buddies with Reed and did his best to convince him NOT to take the shortcut and to stay on the wagon tracks no matter what. It was hard enough for Hastings and Clyman to get through, imagine a fucking wagon party of 80 people, most of whom are women and children. Reed is quoted as saying: “there is a route, and it is of no use to take so much of a roundabout course.”

Mistake number fucking 1 for Reed. And also no he absolutely did not try to convince anyone not to take the doomed shortcut to California.

Later on, the Donner Party is trying to catch up to Hastings after committing to the California shortcut. Eventually they couldn’t even find Hastings wagon tracks in the ground, and only knew they were behind him by notes Hastings had left behind saying the path would be too difficult for wagons and to wait for Hastings to come back to them with directions for a better route. Reed and two other men rode ahead to catch up to Hastings and figure shit out. It took a day, but they caught up to Hastings and demanded that he ride back with them and show them the better route he promised. He rode with them up until they reached the top of some random mountain.

And do you know what this piece of shit did? He just pointed towards an impassable canyon and said “yeah go that way and it’ll be fine”

So they did, and we all know what happened next. But it’s honestly so much more gruesome than we all thought.

Also, the only reason James Reed was able to find the survivors after, was because he was banished from the party after stabbing a beloved teamster to death. He was so hated among the party that almost everyone was ready to murder him and even began constructing a gallows. His family convinced them otherwise and he was therefore banished. He eventually made it to California, fought in the Mexican American war, and only then was able to muster up support for a rescue party.

Also to get back to @lesbianshepard’s point, the Native Americans did try to help. And they were refused. Except for two Miwok guides named Luis and Salvador. At one point, a man named Franklin Graves was fed up (pun intended) with just waiting around to die so he decided to lead a group out from Truckee Lake to get help. This party of like 17 people set out, and called themselves the Forlorn Hope. That should tell you everything you need to know about how this expedition went. Seven of them survived, and the rest were eaten. Luis and Salvador knew how to live off the land, even in dire situations. So seeing a bunch of white people resort to cannibalism (and one of them suggesting murdering the weak for food!) freaked themselves out so they got the helm out of dodge one night.

Unfortunately for Luis and Salvador, the seven survivors happened upon the Miwoks while trying to get to the nearest fort. We may never know the truth, but the survivors claim that Luis and Salvador were near death anyways, so they “put them out of their misery” and butchered their bodies and put them into their packs. I think it’s very likely they just straight up murdered Luis and Salvador.

The most fucked up part is that shortly after, the survivors found a Miwok village. The Miwoks took in the extremely haggard looking pioneers and nursed them back to health, all while the chopped up bodies of two of their own were in their packs.

(Also the survivors looked so incredibly fucked up that children screamed and ran believing they were demons. The kids were not that wrong though.)

Anyways, I think it’s fair to say that the racism these people had towards Native Americans only helped to seal their fate.

Also, I can’t recommend enough the book The Indifferent Stars Above by Daniel James Brown. He really gives you such a complete and brutal telling of the Donner Party that left me with nightmares. But I couldn’t stop reading it. If this part of history is at all interesting to you, this book is a must read.

Grateful Dead Monthly: Kings Beach Bowl – North Lake Tahoe, CA 2/22-24/68

On February 22-24, 1968, the Grateful Dead played a three-night run at Kings Beach Bowl in North Lake Tahoe, California.

In the 1920s, a guy named Joseph King moved from Texas to Truckee, California, a small town northwest of Lake Tahoe. Following World War II, King won some money in a high-stakes poker game with local real estate mogul Robert Sherman, and used the proceeds to build a shopping center on the north end of the lake near Kings Beach. The shopping center became a furniture store and then a bowling alley in the late-50s, when it was sold to Dave Jay and Alan Goodall. Per a 2017 story, “Rock ‘n’ Rollin’ in Tahoe,” on the Tahoe Quarterly website:

“By the time Jay and Goodall operated the building, its use as a bowling alley had diminished. But Jay’s teenage sons, Warren and Gary, were in a Sacramento-based band called The Creators (and were also friends with Goodall’s son), so the owners converted the building into a dancehall and let the young rock group play concerts on the weekends.

In the summer of 1967, The Creators hired a group of Sacramento State college students to perform a light show set to music at the newly christened Kings Beach Bowl. The students, who had a band they called the Simultaneous Avalanche, joined The Creators as the two mainstays at the Kings Beach Bowl.

Happy to be earning any proceeds at the location, the two owners hired a professional booking agent to fill out the roster of bands, but were careful to lean on the advice of the younger generation, who at the time were plugged into the burgeoning music scene that surrounded the Fillmore West.”

The Dead first visited Lake Tahoe in August 1967. Their mini so-called “Lake Tahoe Tour” started with a night at the South Shore American Legion and ended with two nights at the Kings Beach Bowl. The Creators opened the latter shows.

In 2018 story on the Tahoe Magazine website, Kings Beach resident Rich Schultze, a member of the Simultaneous Avalanche, described the Dead’s arrival in town:

“I just happened to be there and I saw this bus come in and the door popped open and out they came. Whether it was Jerry [Garcia] or the other guys, I’m not sure; it was a whole mess of them at once. It was like something out of a movie.

“The small-town people … man, when they first saw the Grateful Dead, they didn’t know what to think. People were literally freaking out. I wish I had a camera to capture the look on people’s faces. It was a culture shock. There were hippies around and everything,  but not to that extent.”

Schultze remembers the soundcheck, as well:

“I remember we were there during the day and changing all of our equipment and stuff. And they were in there rehearsing. And Bob Weir had made a couple mistakes during rehearsal and they were chewing him out — and he was literally crying. They were going ‘Bobby, Bobby, you gotta pay attention.’ And he was going, ‘I’m trying, I’m trying.’ ”

LOL. The Kings Beach Bowl also hosted other Bay-area acts – the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Buffalo Springfield, Credence Clearwater Revival, and Country Joe & The Fish – before closing at the end of 1968 due to high costs of booking bigger names. It is now the North Tahoe Event Center.

Apparently, the Dead dug the venue enough in the Summer of ’67 to return in the Winter of ’68 for a series of three shows dubbed “Trip and Ski.” The shows have become legendary not for the performances, which are average, but for the inclusion of part of 2/24/68’s  Feedback on Anthem of the Sun. The Tahoe Magazine piece says that these shows were among the first where Betty Cantor worked on the audio crew. Conditions were sub-par, and sub-freezing. From the magazine:

“Hewitt Jackson, a road manager for the Sacramento-based rock band Sanpaku, said their band’s keyboard player, Bob Powell, remembers the gigs because the icy temperatures nearly rendered one of Pigpen’s instruments useless.

He said the Dead brought their equipment up to play that gig and loaded it in there the night before. And the owners of the venue didn’t heat the place at night, so the organ in the cold got to be non-operable, and they were panicked about getting it warmed up. There’s a story that they took it outside in the sun to warm it up.”

The final two nights were later released as Dick’s Picks #22. That release came with an unusual warning:

“This is not an audiophile recording! Many of you may have read the numerous Dick’s Picks Caveat Emptors over the years and thought ‘Oh yeah… sure… whatever.’ Well, this old analog recording source exhibits many audio flaws including high distortion, low vocals, tape hiss, and missing pieces. No fair calling Customer Support and complaining! However, let it be known that this CD also includes some pretty damn exciting and historical music, and for that reason is brought to you with pride.”

It’s an official release, so there’s a Spotify widget.

According to Dead archivist David Lemieux, DP#22 was culled from six or seven reels of two-track, quarter-inch tape. Disc #1 (Viola Lee Blues through Morning Dew on the Spotify version) was probably recorded on 2/23, and disc #2 (Good Morning Little Schoolgirl through Feedback) was probably recorded on 2/24. These are not complete sets – a few repeats and songs with splices were omitted. Notably, drummer Bill Kreutzmann does not play on the 2/24 Other One > New Potato Caboose segment. DL2 spoke with Billy, who recounted that he was “skiing all day, and he was so tired that he sat out for a couple minutes [or like 15].” On the tape after New Potato Caboose, Phil Lesh says, “If Bill Kreutzmann will just come back up on the stage and play some more music with us, I promise never to say anything nasty about him.”

And back in 2007 as part of the “Taper’s Section” feature on dead.net, DL2 also offered some insight regarding 2/22, the first night of the run:

“One of the most frequent questions we’ve received over the years is what about 2/22/68 Lake Tahoe. As we all know, Dick’s Picks Vol. 22 is from 2/23 & 24/68. Unfortunately, the tapes for the 2/22/68 show were incomplete, and more importantly, they had severe mix problems that rendered the bulk of that show unlistenable. But, because the music at the end of the show is so good, we are going to play it here for you, although please be warned: there are no vocals on the tapes, and there are a few other mix issues. However, as you’ll hear, those issues are rather minor when put up against the high quality of this music. So, for the first time, here is the heart of that show, Dark Star>China Cat Sunflower>The Eleven>Caution from 2/22/68 at Kings Beach Bowl. Don’t say we didn’t warn you, but this music is so good, we thought you’d be able to overlook some sound problems.“

“Can all of the rooms enjoy this view?” was our client’s question on our first site walk. We were looking at the Pacific Crest of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the distance. This question formed the seed of our conceptual approach to the design of the house. We organized the family-driven program of 7,200 square feet into a simple two-part scheme.

The lower-level base follows the street geometry, while the upper levels are twisted slightly to align with the view. The steel base protects the structure from deep winter snows common in the Sierra Nevada and allows the lower-level form to disappear into the grade on the high side of the topography.

Viewfinder is built as two elevated rectangular boxes with deeply recessed apertures focused on a singular view. Sheathed in a red cedar rain screen and closed on three sides, the boxes open to the Pacific Crest to the southwest. A covered porch wraps this exposure of the house, allowing access to the house from outside and helping keep the family connected.

Open to the landscape on the view side, the porch is concealed behind a full-height screen on the street side. Light filters through the spaces between the boards of the displaced rainscreen and animates the space behind. A ceiling of unfinished cedar boards takes the form of a soft inverted triangle that runs continuously across the plan and slopes up to the edges, allowing clerestories to the east. The ceiling extends out over the porch like a large lens hood, protecting the glass doors from weather and shielding the interior from bright afternoon sun.

A triangular cutout in the roof relieves the long expanse of sloped wood, like a crack in timber. The space aligns with a similarly shaped glass floor light in the deck that allows a sliver of sun to penetrate deeply into the form. Children can also be easily monitored in the pool below.

The lower level is for play, fitted with a bunk room and an exercise and game room that open onto the pool, which is situated to reflect the view beyond. The spoils from the pool and house excavation were retained on site and used to support the terraced turf area.

Mechanical systems use high-efficiency boilers to fire radiantly heated floors embedded in lightweight concrete and surfaced with granite flooring. Continuous glass doors open to allow natural cooling via prevailing westerly breezes in summer that flow through the eastern clerestory windows.

Specifying enhanced-efficiency glazing and insulation, in addition to earth-sheltering the lower level to the north and east, achieved a 14.5% improvement above the strict California energy code.

Arrival to the house was carefully considered, with an angled access drive that slips onto the high side of the site and affords the first view of the Pacific Crest as one reaches the top of the hill. The intentions of the design are clear from this approach: the house gives its undivided attention to the snow-covered mountains, like a camera body twisted on a tripod to capture a distant perspective.
