i am so overcome by the way knives is in love with an idea of his brother. an image. he is so infatuated with the idea of having a twin that he will literally destroy everything that makes vash vash, hollow him out until he's empty, just so he can have him by his side. just so they can be together. how devastating to love someone so much that you don't love them at all. how hideous it is to be loved that way, to be loved as an idol, and not a being.

ohhh your observation in your original post is really interesting (about the harmonica being associated with Vash and how that shows up in the “regular people” songs to show how he’s invested in their lives). i wonder if that could explain “Nicholas and Meryl” on the second OST which is pretty much a mellow version of that harmonica theme that’s in all the “Vash songs”. I was surprised when I first heard it, considering the name of the track (tbh I was really curious about what they would choose to represent the link between those two). BUT with what you said, maybe they decided to go with that harmonica motif because Vash is now such an integral part of their lives now and also the one tying Wolfwood + Meryl together.

I've been listening to the Tristamp ost while I've been studying and I've noticed that Vash's character instrument is a harmonica. Most of his character songs/character adjacent songs (Mystery Man, Common Front, Vash the Stampede) have harmonica as a prominent part of the arrangement. It's not solely in "Vash songs", it's actually shared with a lot of other background music/ "regular people" songs (No Man's Land, Jeneora Rock, Compatriots). I think this is a great way to show how Vash is invested in the lives of these people. Whereas Knives's piano is almost exclusively for him, which is isolating and adds automatic, recognizable tension whenever you hear it.

Also! There's this cool "Aim, Fire!" backing chorus in a lot of Vash songs that adds an extremely spaghetti western beat, which I adore. (you can hear it in The Jeneora Rock Resistance) Especially since there's lyrics from Vash's perspective in his character songs that make it seem like this is the inside of his head/the energy he's moving with.

"you were afraid of them, of humans" is probably the worst thing you can say to Knives. The biggest insult to him, to imply that he is scared of the race that he thinks so lowly of. (Hence the violent kick to the face).

But Vash is right - he sees through Knives. When Knives says in the next panel "get a hold of yourself. Quit being so gullible" - he's saying that Vash can't just blindly trust humans and assume that they won't experiment on them like what they did to Tesla. He's saying that they SHOULD be afraid.

I headcanon that Vash hates going into heat. He has to hole up and hide in a motel for like a week or so to ride it out and it’s just so embarrassing for him. And he’s so so so so tired of it, tired of his body, tired of being consumed with want. So I imagine he needs some sort of moral support during this time and reassurance (aside from letting him use you of course 🥰)

He really does!!! He hates feeling like he's inconveniencing others, and the constant itch under his skin for your touch, your lips, your voice... It's not exactly making things any easier.
