Thinking of Him.

Everything reminds me of you lately. I could recognize the scent of your shampoo from a mile away. I stop myself at the store when I see someone with your haircut. I think of you while blasting love songs at night. Every time my phone buzzes butterflies threaten to fight their way from my stomach. I dress everyday for you, putting on the sweater you always complement. I go to your favorite spots, and look around, hoping to see you.

I think about what you’d say if you knew this sometimes. I think about the way you laugh and brush your hair from your eyes. The way you’ll rant on and on about your favorite songs and TV shows. How you always seem to find the ugliest shirts, and make them work. How you’ll text me about how much you hate your math class. And I wonder, is telling you how I notice this worth me losing you forever?

Me As A Boy

Maybe I was born this way, without the one thing I wanted to possess.  I always thought it would grow in, like hair or fingernails. 

Every day I would check, and every day there was nothing.  I asked my mother why.  “Because you’re not a boy,” she said. 

“Why do boys get penises and girl’s don’t?” It was an innocent question then, and even now it still haunts me as I wonder what I would have been as a boy with my very own dick. 

Sometimes in the mirror I’d pretend, I’d choose an object; a banana, a remote control. I’d stick it against my crotch, thrusting like it was organic, like I’d been born a boy. 

I grew up wearing dresses and sparkles. I accepted my fate and let the girl wash away the boy, until I was in make-up, high heels and lace. I wore perfume, and there wasn’t a trace of the boy I’d once been inside. 

Now, as I stand in the mirror, I see him, a visual echo of my confusion.  I wasn’t quite a woman.  I’d never really fit in with the other girls.  I thrusted when I should have shimmied, I loved to fuck not make love, I bought a strap-on and started fucking girls.

Now I’m just as confused as I’ve always been.  Me as a boy is me, but me as a girl is me too.  I can thrust or shimmy.  I pretend enough to fit in, but I’m both. 

I’m most certainly a girl, but when I look in the mirror I see him. I see his confidence, his charm.  He’s me as a boy.
