Red comes from where?!
Colors are everywhere: plants, animals, food, books, clothes, pens, and even hair-dye. Recently I read an article about color, specifically red, and how painters came to use it along with it’s shades. Two sources of red[pigment] are Brazilwood and Cochineal.
Tumblr media
[The species Caesalpinia sappan was found by the Portuguese in India, long before the discovery of Brazil, which has abundant populations of the brazilwood, and is the primary modern day supplier]
Brazilwood is the heartwood of a few species of Caesalpinia, which belongs to commercially important legumes such as pea, soybean, and lentil. (Two types of wood: heartwood and sapwood. Heartwood is the inner dense wood and sapwood is the outer wood with living tissues. Expensive wood flooring is made from heartwood whereas that rotting patio of your neighbor’s home is made from sapwood) The process of getting color from heartwood is by drying, powdering, dissolving in water, and boiling for staining. The length of time boiling results in a different shade of red. Adding other natural compounds to the powder results in a variety of color combinations.
Tumblr media
[Colors obtained by Brazilwood powder; I predict that boiling times varied for each stain]
The Cochineal is a ‘true bug’ of the order Hemiptera. Since I’m not familiar with entomology I can’t delve deep about the relationships, but UCBerkeley says that they are referred as “half winged” because the first set is tough while the rest are membranous. These insects have the red pigment carmine obtained by boiling or drying thousands of individuals before powdering and separating in water. The precipitate is discarded and the solid that remains at the bottom is used. The pigment is produced by females to avoid predation; it’s said that 70,000 insects will produce one pound of carmine.
Tumblr media
[Native South American, possibly Peruvian, brushing cochineal insects from a cactus to make color. Were his pants colored with carmine? The second page shows what the male and female insects look like, I guess]
Companies such as Dannon and Betty Crocker use carmine for their “natural” fruit flavorings in yogurt and cake products. Ocean Spray juices, Skittles candies, lip sticks, and even energy drinks use this extract to add color.
Tumblr media
[Just make sure that the label “natural” has many definitions]
