The Toronto Public Library has removed "If I Must Die" by Palestinian writer, poet, professor and activist Refaat Alareer from its display.
If you're an author, writer, academic or reader you can contact TPL to voice your opinion on this decision to censor Palestinian poetry. Who to email here and here.

Toronto libraries could all soon be open year-round, Mayor Olivia Chow announced Sunday.
Speaking at a Toronto library, Chow announced a new plan on Sunday that will see seven-day-a-week service provided at all branches by July 2026. Currently, some branches in the city are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Last year's city budget allocated $10 million to expand hours at some of those branches, but not all.
"In my last budget we started this work, and in my next budget we will finish it," Chow told a small crowd at Toronto's Wychwood library branch, which is currently closed on Sundays.
"It shouldn't be closed today," Chow said. "It's Sunday. A lot of families are looking for things to do with their kids." [...]

Actually that last post reminded me that on friday my building had the guy come to check all the hvac units on my floor. Same guy as last season, we chat every time but i have forgotten his name in the past two days (this is not uncommon for me recently). Anyway i convinced him to go to the library because they have 3d printers and it’s like 10 cents per some weight of filament.
Really, if the library wasn’t a public institution for community good i’d be like they should pay me to be an external advocate because i am always convincing people to use the library system, informing them of services they didn’t know about, and letting them know that even if they don’t live in the service area of TPL, if their work is then they can get a card. TPL is one of, if not the, best library systems out there. While you may not live in Toronto, i encourage you to look up your local and see what services they have that may be new to you. There’s something for everyone at the library.
#Public libraries#libraries#libraries are the best#and toronto public is a gem of a system#Lbr if the library wasn’t a public good i wouldn’t be out here lauding its greatness so really i do not want pay#More monetary support for libraries and protections from censorship happy idiots though would be fab

Thursday December 14th
On campus again today. After picking up a book at the University College library, I’m working at Robart’s library this evening. But on a different floor this time to change things up.
As this paper nears completion the book stack gets larger. I am glad it will be finished today (it has to be, it’s due at midnight), but I will miss the process. It’s been nice to get back into the groove of schoolwork after everything.

The union representing 6,000 municipal and library workers in York Region is calling for the chief executive officer of the Markham Public Library to step down following the brief removal of Islamic Heritage Month displays from its branches. CUPE Local 905 released a statement on Friday, saying it has no trust left in the leadership of Catherine Biss as CEO of MPL, and that her resignation would be "a first step towards rebuilding the relationship between workers and their employer." An email surfaced on social media this week in which MPL staff were directed to "take down any merchandising" on the Islamic Heritage Month and not "actively promote" it given the current situation in the Middle East so the library would not be perceived as "taking a particular side."
