I’m dating myself here… but I saw the original 1996 “Twister” in a theater when it was first released. I don’t remember any details EXCEPT - the best effects shots from the trailer were NOT included in the actual movie… what was up with that?!?

Saw the sequel today. In our current era of immersive CGI, the effects look great and with the plural of the title “TwisterS” there are a lot more of those danged tornados!

Overall I liked it. In particular, I liked the character arc of the main character, Kate, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones. She was very good. Interestingly she actually from England. In particular, I was glad she got the final moment all to herself. And of course Glen Powell was good looking.

But you know… I over analyze movies. I wasn’t too keen on the idea on the subtext of the story - that you can’t trust scientists and Latinos because they’ll take advantage of ordinary Americans. But you can trust reckless good old boys! I’m exaggerating but if you see the movie you’ll know what I mean.

(Keep an eye out for the a-hole who is the Latino’s business partner? The actor is David Corenswet who is playing the new Superman that’s coming out next year.)

Twisters is the second movie, this year, where I feel like it was incomplete.

The movies are cueing up typical moments in the genre and then just not doing them.

They were supposed to kiss, right? That was a very "kiss the girl" coded moment.

I'm not crazy.

When they came to get her out of the car, I was like, wait, this feels like their ending the movie. They can't be ending this movie, not right now. I thought they were going to wrangle another one just to make sure. Also, no horse getting snatched up. Why am I at a rodeo to not see one of them rodeo animals spun round wild? Also, I thought twin twisters were going to be a bigger part of the plot.

Bring back the real lovers. I'm tired of stuff being romance coded to get romance fans in the door, and then the filmmakers snatch the rug out from under us going, "Haha. Bitch you thought".

And you "it's not about the romance. Not everything is about romance" jagoffs, butt out. This is not for you. They already made Twisters without romance, its called Into the Storm (2014). Watch it and stay away from me.

This movie is so heavily coded for romance that it feels like a slap in the face that they don't kiss. They even hint at (J or X)avi was in love with her at one point, too. What the hell is going on? You don't need to trick me into seeing your little movie. I was coming regardless, but now I'm not happy about it. You could've made this a colleagues only affair, and I would've been fine, but this was bullshit. Tyler does so much romance hero stuff.

Catch is, I wouldn't be so upset if this movie ended in the field immediately after the big tornado. Instead, this movie decides to put on a big show of Tyler being at the airport, Kate saying his catch phrase back to him. He makes the "whats she mean by that face" nails his truck to the ground and runs after her as Xjvai cheers for him. What the fuck was that for if they weren't going to kiss?!

You know they messed up because all the actors and director etc. On the press tour are doing the romance isn't the end of their story walk back. Like, yeah, no shit that's why you end it on her plane being grounded because a big storm's rolling through.

Don't piss me off.

Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton close your eyes.

The director saying the movie isn't political is laudable. Every five seconds, a character is saying tornadoes have only gotten bigger and more frequent in the last 20 years. Just because you don't call it climate change don't mean it ain't climate change.

I hated every needle drop in this movie. It was very Netflix reality show.

Also, the guy coming in to snatch up people's land seconds after a tragedy is a bad guy.

Twisters (2024) Review - Spoiler free

You’ll be swept away with Twisters as the fun and the drama doesn’t dissipate until the credits roll.

Twister (1996) is one of only three movies I vividly remember going to see as a kid, it’s in my Top 10 favourite movies ever, and ignited my curiosity and yearning for storm chasing. I’ve only seen one tornado, and I had to fight ever urge in my to not jump in the car and go for it. I tell you this so when I say I have been excited to see Twisters (2024), you do not underestimate my words. The problem with being so hyped for a movie is that it has a higher chance of not meeting those expectations. Twisters met those expectations!

Twisters is a standalone sequel to the 1996 film, meaning its set in the same world but is a new story with new characters that does not connect to the previous story. The only real tie to Twister is the appearance of Dorothy, the scientific instrument they were trying to put in the path of the tornado to study it. The movie also does some fun fan service with plenty of quotes from Twister.

The story is similar to the original as the team are wanting to learn and study tornados and there are two rival teams chasing, but it’s a really interesting twist on the premise. It hits the same tone, showing the awe-inspiring power of nature and the fun and excitement that comes with that, but also the death and destruction that it leaves in its wake. There is a balance of wild chases and epic visuals of the storms with the personal story of the characters that wraps around it and gives it meaning.

Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos step up with their performances and give us characters that are layered, complex and, essentially real. That’s what keeps you engaged in the movie because you want to see how they deal with their drama and decisions, which makes you care even more about the characters when the stakes are high.

4 / 5 – Loved it! Go and see Twisters. It’s not a wreck-it, disaster popcorn flick. It’s a fun, visually stunning blockbuster with real heart. I cannot wait to see it again.

Just finish LOSH and ngl it was slept on. The story was interesting af and i love how they got away with all of the murder,death and trauma.

idk if the animation crew did also work on Batman 2004 because they had pretty similar style and animation. It’s creative, dynamic and impactful. The choreography and camera work is accumulate.

Kell-El was an surprisingly good additional to the show. The idea of edgy Superman is tiring by now but i like how they handled it. It was not just for fun but rather a reasonable response to the environment he was grown up with.

My fav thing abt Kel is his fighting style : brutal and efficient. While Superman relied more on being impenetrable and could deliver heavy punches ( and he mainly just punched ). Kell fought with his whole body, even using the momentum of the previous move to power up the next.

You think fighting Superman is bad, imagine fighting a Superman who is born to choose violence, have duo daggers and live off survival mode.

P.S I need those flying and super speed ones do the whole “tornado spin move” more. It’s underused!

More in depth review of Twisters. Spoilers ahead, you have been warned

Soundtrack: 9/10, amazing soundtrack, gets you pumped up and is very catching, there were a few songs that were forgettable but nonetheless, insanely good.

Charaters: 6/10, I wanted to slap so many people it’s not even funny. But there were very good personalities and funny characters. My favorite was the British reporter, I only wish he was there longer. Philip Hamilton showed up, bro did in fact take his shot, but he stayed alive (for Eliza)

Story: 7/10, was pretty fast paced in the beginning, you didn’t get any time to know the characters so you couldn’t really sympathize with Kate until much later on for me personally. Like girl I get it… but why should I care? ya’ll just kept driving in the path of the tornado.

Enjoyment: 9/10 very good watch if you want something fast paced but slightly predictable. The shop owner deserved better but I knew bro was gonna die the second he said “Don’t let it take me!”

Has its own comedic charm, has very funny moments and a good feel of how the characters feel. I too would have taken the pizza and closed the door on him.

Overall: 10/10, good watch with the family, pretty clean aside from maybe like a couple curse words. No uncomfortable scenes (which is great because dear god ya’ll ever just have to look at your siblings when those scenes come on and pray you don’t laugh in the theater?)

I would die for British reporter man. Those idiots in the shop deserved to get sucked up into the tornado I said it, you listen to the redneck when he’s yelling at you to get to shelter.

-          Descriptions of domestic violence, at times somewhat graphic (mentions of hitting, punching, breaking bones and threatening

-          Gaslighting (? Is it? I don’t like misusing the word)

My interpretation of the media(Includes spoilers):

Aaaaaaahhh this book was a hard read. Okay let’s go

The basic premise is about the 16-year-old Sarah. She’s an artist, but suddenly finds she suddenly can’t create anymore, and this is obviously distressing for her. It’s hinted at that the art teacher is suspicious, and something had happened in the art club that sparks this initial avoidance. Sarah was seemingly a good student with fine grades and on her way to being an artist, when she suddenly decides to drop out.

It’s clear by the tension she comes home to, that this is not a household that communicates with one another. Her mother is a night-shift emergency room nurse who’s always exhausted, her father is a sinkhole of a man. He has a job I don’t remember, he takes up a certain space that makes everyone around him very wary. The older brother is completely out of the scene and has been for 6 years. No one talks about it. Or anything, for that matter. These aren’t people Sarah can depend on.

There’s something wrong and no one ever talks about anything. Nothing is original.

In the steady decline of Sarah’s mental health, we start with her deciding to get her name changed to Umbrella, something of a nonsense choice that becomes symbolic of her favorite umbrella, one that shields her from the raining Bullshit as she ponders on whatever’s making her the way she is.

At the bus stop she meets 23-year-old Sarah, who clues in that even though life is hard, it gets better. And 10 year old Sarah, who’s sole existence surrounds the trip to Mexico and the traumatic events that transpired. Then 40 year old Sarah, who pushes for Umbrella to talk about what’s all going on here. The Sarahs all exist in the world as real people that others can interact with (which other characters find uncanny), but also seemingly show up out of the blue around Sarah. You can see how I feel this is heavy DID-coding, right?

As Umbrella traverses her existential crisis, we get flashbacks that piece together what’s going on under the surface, going over the trip in Mexico several times with more and more truth to it. This is all chock-full of confusion, denial and obvious dissociation; a tornado. Every now and again the chapters are in the point of view of Helen(the mom), who’s resentful and full of loathing for her life and her rat of a husband. Sarah also makes contact with her estranged brother to find the truth.

The hard truth we find out, is that the father had been regularly violent to his wife and son for years and years, up until Sarah was born. The incident Umbrella can’t remember was the same thing happening again on their trip to Mexico, that pushed the older brother into deciding to leave.

When Chet(the father) is confronted with the sight of his son coming back home, he has a violent rage and completely wrecks the house. When Umbrella confronts him, he destroys things dear to her, like the very umbrella she named herself after.

The cops are called. Chet the rat puts on a pathetic display as he’s he’s hauled out by the police. A divorce is sorted out and no matter his attempts to come back, all four of the Sarahs personally pack up his belongings and kick him out of the house for good.

Everyone lives a hopefully happily ever after with their sights set on healing. 10-year-old Sarah fuses with Umbrella, and it’s assumed the other two do too

This book is very difficult for me because the only difference between Chet and my own father is a couple of letters in the name and the lack of the bitter irony of being a “Loving Pastor". Everything about this book really resonated deeply with me, from the way he was intentionally unresponsive in a way to bait others into starting fights with him, down to completely not recognizing my own face. Chris is just as perfectly pathetic as Chet was in the book, and it shook me to the core to read such an accurate description of my own father.

I recall having a similar mental breakdown from 14-16 as well, and it went very much the same way. Nothing is original, after all.

A big part of Sarah’s trauma too is the betrayal of the Helen choosing to stay for the sake of ‘the girl needs a father’. Helen lost her son over her broken marriage. She didn’t leave, despite knowing all this, despite knowing it could happen again. I understand that she’s a domestic abuse victim herself and its very hard to get out of these situations in real life, but the absence of violence is not love. Sarah is betrayed and traumatized by it, and rightfully so. Her viewing 10-year-old Sarah as a ‘second chance’ for HERSELF hits really hard.

This book reads like a teenager going through all this who will later find out about her DID, because she doesn’t have the words for it at this point in time. The fragmented, unfeeling or only-feeling nature of her memories feel a lot like what memory recall is like with DID. Her unwinding into Nihilism and unreality is very dissociative in nature. The betrayal of being lied to all her life is palpable and complex.

What I found interesting was that the author clarifies that there are four Sarahs (10 yr old, Umbrella, 23 yr old and 40 yr old), but I’d argue there are a couple other fragmentations. The chapters titled with Tornado seem to almost be another part of Umbrella who embraces becoming a homeless man feels like an introject part. The sudden change in goals at the start of the book feels as though Umbrella is newly split off and taking over for whatever Sarah came before.

The author put a lot of personal details into this book, so I’m assuming a lot of this story is true to her own life. I don’t know how else you write a quietly domestically violent family like this without lived experience. The characters are all flawed and so life-like. The villain is notably human and not evil in the classic Disney villain sense. Evil and vile but in an extremely real way

It’s a really hard read, but it’s a good one. I’m not sure what else to say. If you’ve had experiences like this, traverse with caution, it might take you back like it did for me

Sorry this review is a bit of a scrambled mess also. I might’ve gotten some details mixed up, usually I do extra research for what I’m ingesting and didn’t have the energy for this one by the end

PTSD in Twisters

There may be minor spoilers ahead for Twisters? Idrk what counts as a spoiler but it's not like I reveal the ending or anything. Anyway!

I saw the movie Twisters yesterday and I wanted to comment (positively) on the PTSD representation in the main character Kate. I don't have PTSD myself (though I do have trauma), so if someone who has PTSD has something to add please do so and I will reblog it.

In the first scene of the movie, we see what causes Kate's trauma. Put simply, she makes a mistake while chasing a tornado and gets too close. Three of her friends (including her boyfriend) get blown away and killed, she gets injured and almost killed herself. We see a street sign wobble and get ripped out of the ground. The windshield wipers get stuck from the wind. She leaves the car she was in and hides under a bridge to survive. One friend was in a different car, and is yelling trying to radio them as they are running away. These are important details.

The movie then jumps 5 years in the future, where Kate has gotten a desk job and given up on why she was hunting tornadoes (to try to find a way to stop them). She is reunited with the one friend who didn't die in the first scene, who she hadn't seen in years. He asks her to go help him with a similar goal to the one she had originally had (stopping tornadoes). She is very reluctant but eventually agrees (otherwise we wouldn't have a movie).

After her traumatic event, Kate almost completely cuts contact with her old life. She moves across the country from rural Oklahoma to very urban NYC and ignores calls from her mother, cuts contact with her one friend, and gets a job that is the farthest possible thing from what had caused her trauma without leaving meteorology altogether. Each of these things individually may not seem like a big deal, but right after her trauma as well as all of them at once makes it clear this was probably an attempt to distance herself from her trauma. And it makes sense why she would be so reluctant to go back into the field when her friend asked. I wanted to highlight this because PTSD is not just panic attacks and flashbacks. Trauma changes you, and it is not always obvious. And this was a very good portrayal of distancing oneself from trauma.

Next thing I want to point out is visual triggers throughout the movie. Remember the things I described about the traumatizing event. I can't remember the chronological order, but we see a sign wiggling about to be ripped out of the ground, at which Kate looks very panicked. We see the windshield wipers get stuck from the wind, and Kate watches them very nervously. The car she's in passes under a bridge and she turns around in the car to stare at it. All of these are clear visual triggers of the incident. What makes this a good portrayal is that it wasn't just the tornado that reminds her of the incident. It was things others would have found inconsequential. A wiggling sign, windshield wipers, and a bridge. Often people with PTSD get triggered by those small signs. I have heard people say things such as walking through a doorframe of a certain color, an inconsequential smell, things that nobody else would notice. Not to mention that triggers can change day to day. Someone may be able to handle something one day, and not be able to the next due to many other factors.

Of course, her biggest trigger is getting close to a tornado. Naturally, she is nervous when they are driving up to the tornado for the first time. Even without PTSD, it's a dangerous situation and anyone would be nervous. But she seems to be holding it together until she steps out of the car. Remember I said she and her friends left the car at the beginning. As soon as she does so, it takes no time for her to be triggered into a freeze response which then evolves into a flight response. Her friend also yells her name trying to snap her out of it (the same friend that had been yelling through the radio during the incident). She stands frozen for too long and the goal is missed, then she ushers her friend into the car and drives away in a panic. If you know anything about PTSD, this shouldn't be a surprise - not only her panicking, but the specific responses she has (freeze first, flight second). During the incident, she and her friends had frozen in place in the car, then aborted the mission and ran for cover. It makes sense that as she's experiencing flashbacks (be it emotional or full), she would use the same techniques that saved her the first time. Now would also be a good time to point out that the way she cut herself off from her old life could also have been considered a long-winded flight response. Often fight or flight/trauma responses manifest in other ways besides heat-of-the-moment.

After driving away and messing up the mission/goal, Kate seems extremely angry at herself and guilt-driven. She lashes out physically at the car and has a posture of self-loathing. This makes sense. People with PTSD often feel much anger and guilt with things regarding their trauma, as well as when they have trauma responses. They can be harsh on themselves, feeling like they "shouldn't have reacted the way they did" even if their response was completely in line with their trauma. In Kate's case, it had been 5 years since the incident and it clearly still affected her. Not to mention, she had failed another tornado-related mission in a way her survivor's guilt brain would absolutely have taken as entirely her fault.

While she does have other moments of panic throughout the movie (which is good, because it means they didn't just write her to have one panic attack and then be done with her trauma), they are all fairly similar and brief.

The last thing I want to mention is how, besides these brief moments and the major panic at the very triggering first attempt, Kate does very well under pressure, more so than the other characters. This can also be attributed to PTSD. Often people will work very well in stressful situations, especially those with C-PTSD (which Kate does not have, at least not from the tornado incident alone) because they had to learn to live with chronic stress and walking on eggshells. In many people's situations, panic was not an option, and during stressful/triggering situations after the fact, the panic comes once the event is over. This is true in the moment as well as broadly. I have seen that people with PTSD may be numb, dissociative, seem to have it all together, and be otherwise strong in the moment, but it isn't until they feel safe that they start to break down, and that post-traumatic stress begins to truly take hold as the brain struggles to process and put the trauma behind them. This can also somewhat be seen in Kate's case, as she runs away and tries to ignore/suppress the incident as well as her emotions toward it. She tries to act as if she's moved on, but it's clear once she's triggered 5 years later that she has not truly processed and moved past it only ignored it.

Dissociation is also very common in people with PTSD, and may be profound enough to be a separate dissociative disorder or not. In Kate's case, it doesn't seem to be, at least overtly, however there is one moment in which she does seem to be dissociating. It's subtle, and possible wasn't even intentional, but the way she had a blank expression and thousand foot stare (the rest of the movie she was quite expressive) and was in a triggering situation makes it very possible. They were in the car driving toward the tornado target. In Kate's case, this makes sense to be extremely triggering as it is reminiscent of the lead-up to the incident, and dissociating as the mind's way to prepare and protect itself for more trauma makes a lot of sense. She could also have been lost in a flashback, which would also have made sense, or a combination of the two.

One other small thing that's worth noting is the brief nightmare/flashback. After the 5 year time skip, Kate is shown asleep in bed and her late boyfriend wraps his arm around her, which startles her awake. She then checks the bed to make sure she's really alone. Flashback nightmares are very common in PTSD, and even though it didn't seem related her boyfriend did die during the incident, which could have tainted some or all of her memories of him to be triggering.

Overall, I think the PTSD representation was very good in this movie. The only thing I'd say was that they didn't come out and say that's what it was, even though the signs were clear. The description of the movie said "haunted by the memory" which shows they did in fact have the intention of the incident being traumatic and having a lasting impact on Kate. But there are many people who still think PTSD is limited to war veterans, or is very different and even makes people dangerous to others, or doesn't believe it exists at all. Of course everyone has a different experience, and it looks different for everyone.
