Speedboat Bar
It has a kind of weird name.  If I was trying to come up with a name for a restaurant, the first to come to mind would not be Speedboat.  Even if it was planning to be a sporting institution, names such as the Horse & Coaches, The Greyhound or other such names might be more suitable and acceptable in England. These are I assume photos of the Thai royals.  Something I have seen in other Thai…

Kulinarische Reise durch Thailand
Tumblr media

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi guys. So I am writing a little story for the holiday season. It is very fluff-tastic, mostly family and love with a minimum of plot. I very much hope someone enjoys it!
Heart’s Abundance
Part 1 - Giving Thanks
Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5 , Part 6
Bree and I are sitting in the kitchen, enjoying my own special blend of “Liberty Tea,” a mixture of dried strawberry leaves, lemon balm, and chamomile. It is hot, fragrant, and delicious. As we sip, the afternoon sun warms the whole room, giving the feeling of a golden cocoon in the midst of a particularly cold November day. Adso is with us, basking in a windowsill, and we are all practically purring with contentment. Then the sound of dried leaves crackling underfoot reaches our ears. We have visitors. Brianna and I sigh slightly but smile at each other. She opens the door while I take a honey cake from the cupboard.
It is Young Ian and Rachel. I smile warmly at them. Ian is dressed in particular native splendor today, owing to a visit from a group of prominent Mohawks passing through. His head is freshly plucked and spiked, with metal ornaments and turkey feathers hanging from the back.  Over his pink calico shirt is a vest decorated with astonishing beadwork, and his buckskin trousers are fringed. Next to him Rachel’s Quaker attire is a contrast. She is in a gray wool dress with plain white cap and kerchief. As she enters the sunny room, she unwraps her shawl to reveal the newest Murray, snuggled in a sling against his mother.
Brianna closes the door behind them, then her face lights with a smile, “Why, you look like a Thanksgiving pageant!”
The couple look at each other in incomprehension. “A what, cuz?” Ian inquires.
“You know! When the Pilgrims and Indians ate together. At Plymouth? It was a long time ago…” Her voice becomes more hesitant as the faces of our guests remain blank.
I understand the difficulty. Thanksgiving isn’t celebrated now, even though the famous harvest meal happened more than one hundred years before. I’m struggling to salvage this time-travel faux pas when Jamie steps through the door leading to the front of the house. He bends to kiss my cheek then crosses to wiggle a finger at the newly freed baby. “And what’s that then?” he says, turning to Brianna. “Is thanksgiving not something you do, no a meal?”
“Well…” she hesitates, then boldly rushes on. “Where I grew up, in Boston, some people take a day near the end of November to give thanks for their blessings. They celebrate with a feast and invite close friends and family.”
“It sounds lovely,” Rachel says kindly, “though oughtn’t we to give thanks every day?”
“Of course,” Brianna agrees, ‘it’s just nice to take a special moment for it now and then.” She looks wistfully at me. “Right Mama?”
Suddenly I recall craft-paper feathers, Macy’s parade on the television, and the taste of a cranberry jello salad in perfect vividness. I move to stand by Brianna and take her arm, smiling softly in understanding. “Yes, darling. It is.”
Jamie looks at us and his own face grows tender. Rachel still looks confused, but Ian, who has been watching carefully exclaims, “Sounds like a fine idea! We should have our own thanks meal, aye?”
I look at Ian gratefully, thankful indeed for his enthusiastic spirit. I also see Jamie’s face. It is creasing slowly into a smile. “Aye. We should.”
Brianna’s hand tightens on my arm in excitement. “Great! We’ll have Thanksgiving on the Ridge!”
-o0OOO0o-
A few days later I pull Brianna’s turkey out of the oven and baste it well with drippings, butter, and thyme before pushing it back inside for another half hour. It is nearly time to eat and the bounty of the Ridge is spread throughout the kitchen. It will be a delicious meal (if I do say so myself). The smell is heaven, and by the discreet peeking and increasingly frequent visits of men and small children, they think so too.
Jamie and Brianna brought down this large tom the day before. Even with ten people there would be plenty to go around. I had also dug the last of the fresh vegetables and emptied the pantry. Fanny had spent the entire prior afternoon baking. It would be a feast indeed.
The table is set and festooned with colorful dried leaves and pinecones. Roger even wove a clever cornucopia from twigs and filled it with gourds. Perfect. The turkey has a chestnut mushroom stuffing. There are also yams and brussels sprouts and onion gravy, and (elegance indeed!) yeast dinner rolls rather than corn bread. Crocks of butter and honey and jam round out the meal. My mouth waters just setting it all out.
Soon everyone gathers and we ceremoniously present the pièce de résistance on a platter. Looking from face to face around our large farm table I see Fanny’s eyes widen and smile happily to myself. We are all here, Brianna, Roger, Jem, and Mandy. Germain and Fanny. Jenny and Ian and Rachel with the baby sleeping peacefully in a basket. Jamie takes my hand and gives it a squeeze, then leans over and whispers, “I often think your time strange, Sassenach, but this is fine, aye?” He kisses my lips softly.
The others, used to us, are chattering away. Jamie straightens, clears his throat and waits for quiet, then looks to the end of the table, saying formally, “Ieremiah, an toireadh tu taing?“
Jem, sensitive to the honor thus bestowed, sits up straight as an arrow, “Aye, sir.” He folds his hands before him and I am suddenly reminded of my first dinner at Leoch, when young Hamish said grace. Jem has the same red hair. I add Hamish to my prayers as we all bow our heads together.
“Dear Holy Father. Thank ye for the food before us. Thank ye for our family and friends. Bless us, O Lord, and help us to do good always. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
“Amen,” the table echoes.
Jemmy peaks at his father, and at Roger’s nod of approval relaxes happily in his chair. Jamie carves and wafts of fragrant steam are released. The table makes noises of appreciation all around. We fill our plates and enjoy the meal.
“You know,” Roger says, buttering a roll. Since we are giving thanks today, maybe we should each say something we’re thankful for. I believe that’s something they do in Boston, aye Brianna?” He smiles at his wife and she nods.
“Oh yes, it’s a tradition.” When no one volunteers she goes on, and looking directly at Jamie and I, “I’m thankful to be home.” Brianna then turns to Mandy on her right. “And what about you sweetheart? What are you thankful for?”
Mandy turns up a honey-smeared face and smiles. “I thankful for Esmeralda!”
Everyone chuckles and Roger goes next. “I’m thankful for family, for my wife and bairns.”
Jem says, “I’m thankful for Grandda. And Grandma,” he adds hastily.
Germain is next. “I’m thankful for my friends.” He smiles at Fanny and Jem.
Fanny answers in a small voice, “I’m thankful to Mr. and Mrs. Fraser for keeping me.”
“Oh Fanny,” I say gently, “We want to.” She blinks quickly and gives a small smile and we continue.
Jenny, Ian, and Rachel take their turns.
“I’m thankful for our new wee bairn.”
“I’m thankful to have my mam here, and my wife.”
“I’m thankful for the peace we enjoy here.”
Jamie says simply, “I’m thankful for ye, Sassenach.”
I look around the table slowly and finally turn my face up to Jamie, the man who is my heart, “I’m thankful for each of us. For love and family. For every moment.”
“Amen,” he says, and kisses me.
-o0OOO0o-
Soon afterward the table is cleared, and dessert brought out. We have apple tansey, clootie dumpling, and for Brianna, pumpkin pie. There is also custard and sweet cream. I am just setting coffee to boil when a solid thump sounds on the front door. Everyone freezes in surprise for a heartbeat. Visitors are nearly unheard-of this time of year. Then, just as chaos breaks out, Jamie rises. He walks to the front of the house, myself close behind. He seems unhurried and calm, but I notice he carries the carving knife in his left hand.
Jamie opens the door, letting in a blast of frigid November air. What greets us looks like nothing so much as a bear covered in deer hide. Albeit a bear with merry blue eyes glinting above his beard.
“Myers!” Jamie greets the mountain man warmly, discreetly passing the knife to me. I stash it in my deep pocket. “Welcome! What brings ye here so late in the year?”
The bristles part with Myers’ grin. “Well, I’ll tell ‘ee sir. I’ve come wi’ company. Found ‘im near frozen on his way up from Cross Creek.” He steps aside to reveal a second figure in the dooryard, just as tall, but more solidly built.
Peering around Jamie’s shoulder my mouth falls open in shock. The last person I ever expected to see on the Ridge is the Ninth Earl of Ellesmere.
For once I recover more quickly than Jamie, and step around my husband. “William!” I say in sincere pleasure.
The young man looks up a bit uncertainly, then seeing my happiness recovers himself. “Mother Claire.” He might have said more but is prevented by a blur of yellow homespun that comes hurtling through the door and crashes into his middle. William teeters precariously at the impact before coming solidly back to his feet, Frances Pocock clinging to him in perfect imitation of a baby opossum on its mother’s back.
“William! Oh William! I thought I might never th-, see you again!”
William gingerly pats the capped head. “It’s good to see you again too, Fanny.” He smiles gently down, a slight shadow passing briefly in the depths of his slanted eyes. He gently disentangled Fanny and turns to Jamie. “I hope our arrival isn’t a cause of inconvenience to you sir. I…”
Seeing him hesitate I break in as politely as I can. “Of course not! You are both most welcome! Come in and warm up. We are just about to have dessert.”
I usher the newcomers and the gaping crowd back into the kitchen. In a few moments of flurried activity William and John Quincey are greeted by all and settled at the table, the children relocated to stools.
“We had a fine harvest this year so we’re having a wee meal to celebrate and give thanks for it,” Jamie explains, smiling.
“Judging from this bounty, indeed you have!” Myers exclaims as he unabashedly fills his plate with apple tansey, sweet cream, and one of the remaining rolls covered in honey and jam. Jem and Germain looking on in fascination.
I pour him coffee, hiding a smile. “We’re pleased to share it with you.”
William eats more sedately, but with evident pleasure. Watching him, Fanny on one side and Brianna on the other, I wonder suddenly why he has come. Then I look at Jamie. He is watching the boy as well, and though his face is expressionless, to me his eyes reveal the joy he takes in the sight. No. The reason doesn’t matter. I slide my arm around Jamie’s and lean against him, expressing without words my own joy in his happiness.

Day Two: Favorite Foods
Also on AO3. @chubbyyuuriweek Yuuri looked up at the screen and smiled as Phichit logged in to join them. “Konnichiwa Phichit!” he called out.
“Sawadee krup” Phichit’s cheerful voice responded as he waved to the others in the chat. “This is such a fun idea Yuuri! I’m so glad you invited everyone.”
Yuuri blushed. “I was hungry and missed your tom yam goong and that made me think of the tamales that Leo brought to Skate America that time and then I got distracted by thinking of whether Yuri’s grandfather’s recipe for piroshki would work with something other than katsudon and well... “ Yurri trailed off and shrugged. “So I texted everyone and here we are?”
A chorus of laughs answered him as some of the top male skaters in the world nod and chat in Skype. It was pure chaos for a bit as people greeted each other and got caught up on off-season gossip, but it wasn’t too long before people settled down to share what they’d made or brought to the video chat.
“I know we can’t all be together with training, but I wanted to share a meal with you all,” Yuuri said, looking down at the bowl that his mom had just placed in front of him. “I’ll start, this is katsudon,” he said, lifting the bowl up to show it on camera, “fried pork, rice, egg, green onions and dashi sauce, and it’s my favorite food.”
“Not a shock Katsudon,” Yuri snapped from his grandfather’s apartment in Moscow. He lifted a golden brown parcel up to the camera, “And here’s the improved version.” Yuri took a bite out of it and held it so the skaters could see the inside while he chewed. “I love the original the best, but this is pretty good too.”
“Vsukno!” a bright voice called out. “I’ve made matzo ball soup with chicken, herbs and noodles. It’s perfect to warm up after practice and the recipe is from my Grandmother Irina, of blessed memory. Victor held up the bowl showing off the golden liquid filled with chicken and matzo balls carefully so he didn’t spill it.
“Cheri, I remember that soup and it does warm the soul,” Chris responded. “I thought about just picking up some chocolate which I know you all love, but figured that would be cheating so I’ve made a gruyere and onion tart,” he said holding up a plate showing off a neat slice with a salad next to it. From in back of him a head popped out of the kitchen, “Who made a tart?” Chris chuckled, “Ok, Masumi made a gruyere and onion tart. I grated the cheese though. And I’ll do the dishes,” he called back over his shoulder. The rest could hear a laugh from inside the kitchen.
Guang Hong cleared his throat and held up a plate covered in colorful vegetables and meat. “This is a simple stir fry, but I also made xiaolongbao or soup dumplings.” He bit his lip and looked down, “Mama had to help me get the folds right.” He held up another plate with neatly folded pale dumplings on it.
“You should definitely get Guang Hong to make those for you next time you’re in China,” Leo stated firmly. “They are amazing, but they need to be fresh. He tried sending them to me, and they just don’t travel well.” Leo then held up his plate, “I made chicken with mole and tortillas and a fresh mango salsa.” His colorful plate steamed slightly in the camera.
“That looks amazing Leo,” Phichit said as he shifted to bring his bowl into view. “I made the tom yum that Yuuri mentioned earlier and it was so much easier here than in Detroit! I only had to go to one store, not four. Remember that day Yuuri?”
Yuuri giggled, “The one where we learned American grocery stores dedicate half an aisle to “Asian food” and mix it all together? Yeah, I thought you were going to riot.” Phichit snorted as he lifted a spoon up to salute the camera.
Yuuri looked at the images of his friends all sitting around in their homes and lifting his chopsticks into the air declared, “Itadakimasu!” before digging in. For the next hour or so, skaters traded recipes and stories as they ate around the world and yet right next to each other at the same time.

8 Tips For A Healthy Hot Pot
Tumblr media
Hot pot can be healthy when you choose your ingredients, soup base and plunging sauces carefully. The Department of Endocrinology at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) explains.
“We should have a steamboat!” This is in many cases a clarion call for some festive, heartwarming get-together with family, companions or partners. But is this luxuriously seasoned, a soup-based cauldron of fresh ingredients we call hot pot or steamboat, really great for your body as well?
The response is: Hot pot can unquestionably be healthy, so you pick your ingredients, base soup and dipping sauces cautiously to stay away from an overdose of sodium, saturated fats, and carbohydrates in your meal.
High Sodium Content in Hot Pot
The sodium content in a normal hot pot meal far exceeds the suggested everyday salt intake. Well known hot pot ingredients, for example, fish balls, cuttlefish balls, crab sticks, and meatballs, are undeniably handled food sources high in sodium, educated experts from the Department of Endocrinology , Singapore General Hospital, a member from the SingHealth group.
One can easily eat up to a dozen of these perennial hot pot top choices – fish balls, meatballs, and cuttlefish balls – at a time.
Only five servings every one of fish balls and cuttlefish balls will go through the greater part of your day to day allowance for sodium (2,000mg) and cholesterol (300mg). Furthermore, this does exclude the sodium in the broth!
Be Careful with Saturated Fats in Hot Pot Broth
Hot pot lovers are spoilt for decisions with regards to the broth.
You have the well known Chongqing spicy (mama la) soup, Thai tom yam potato soup, Sichuan hot and spicy soup, Chinese herbal grown pork belly soup, and kombu dashi soup (for Japanese nabe).
The base soup, which as of now contains salt, is made more flavourful by adding slices of marinated pork, chicken, beef and organ meats like liver, pork kidney, beef tripe. Those are high in saturated fats.
Even the chilli paste added to soups is some of the time fried with corn, soybean, olive or canola oil.
Tips for A Healthy Hot Pot
Notice these rules to enjoy in a healthy hot pot meal that doesn’t prompt indigestion, heartburn or constipation:
Select a Light Soup Base for Your Hot Pot
Go for clear or light-enhanced soup, for example, mushroom and cabbage, tofu soup for a healthy hot pot. Buy only low-sodium chicken or vegetable bouillon for soup stock. And avoid drinking the broth.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are my two favourites, Nongshim Kimchi Ramyin and Mama Shrimp Tom Yam. I like warm but not super spicy so I usually add only half of the separate chili in the Mama noodles.
Mama noodles are my normal noodles, the pork and chicken flavours, if I want to add something, like miso paste, soy sauce, bamboo, or eggs. But these two are really good just as they are.
Dumb question but can someone tell me how to know which ramen packets / cup noodles are good? There are so many kinds in the store, it’s overwhelming and I don’t know which ones to try. I’m sure some of them are bad - so what do I look for?
hi! this is a very subjective question, so i’ll just tell you some of our household favorites & then let followers chime in as well. the ramen we eat the most of is mike’s mighty good ramen. it’s more spendy, but often on sale. it has a very rich broth & comes with a delicious oil packet. they have it in cups where you can just add hot water, or in larger packets where you can make it on the stove.
Tumblr media
but my general advice to you would be to just buy 1 packet of ramen at a time to try. you can get a handle on what flavor profile you like, how much salt you like, spice or no spice, etc. one of the great things about ramen is that you can buy packs individually. it definitely can be overwhelming when there are tons of choices, so hopefully seeing other people’s favorites can give you some ideas :) good luck out there!

1.17.2019
things i did today
woke up from 3-430, moisturized
woke up at 12
played the discover weekly playlist while brushing teeth
ate leftover yummy pork ribs and jasmine rice
got a text from carina to walk around arboretum and draw postcards and get a tattoo from good faith
got dressed with new pink uniqlo shirt and pink thrift velour jacket and uniqlo jacket mama bought me, with lots of buttons
ubered to her house (after rushing around and not being able to find key)
went out the back door and ran to the intersection of russett and independence
walked in by knocking on her kitchen window
briefly charged phone
noticed piano playing in the background
she’s the only one in the house
hygge
talked about netflix
walked to urban renewals, she got a new mint and evergreen raincoat
i dropped my backpack off by the register- a policy- but i felt good taking off my jackets and stuffing them inside and giving it to the register woman, because i dislike carrying around a bunch of stuff in a hot indoor area
walked around and didn’t notice anything that sparks joy in me (marie kondo)
walked outside, briskly, noticing all the beautiful restaurants and shops in allston, then arriving at good faith tattoos on the other side of match charter
walked up the stairs, i sat on the couch listening to the music and admiring the tattoo art hung up on the wall, on the other room there was a bearded fellow tattooing a man laying on a masseuse’s platform
carina made an appointment at 6
we walked to coolidge corner, to the brookline bank. i ate (crunched-bad for teeth, but i cant help it) 2 ‘brookline bank’ financial empower-mints
looked around the circular walkroom and saw offices lined in circle, and bank tellers in the front chatting
by that time it was 250/3pm- school was getting out, i was afraid we’d see people we knew
went to the brookline booksmith and saw beautiful contemporary book covers
went downstairs to peruse
i could have spent the entire day there.
but i craved a pbj
so we walked back to her house, after checking out trader joes
on the run to cross by the end of the light i saw some passing familiar face
it was seth, in a funky patterned purple hoodie
i said what, hi!
we went in
carina ate the sample- which was the same as two nights ago (or was it last night-- i can’t remember)
we walked back to her home
bella and ella were there, bantering loudly
i opened her fridge and found (on the search for the strawberry jelly) an assortment of interesting spreads and jams
i took out the pink grapefruit marmalade (tj’s) and big apple butter and strawberry jelly
i spread the tip with the marmalade (a light clear pink) and the next part with apple butter (dark brown thick spread) and the rest half with strawberry jam and then pb, dolloping pb on the first 2 jams bc i couldnt spread the thick (not so oily) pb on the already-placed jams
ate it
made another, ate that
it was so good
carina suggested we read
she read her vacation’s book, i selected voices of brookline from her bookshelf, and read the section on BHS students and the head librarian
the section on bhs students- i read it and then realized those people were 31 by now, and i facebook searched their lives, and i felt very strange and young and indescribable
the library section- i loved it more than anything
i remember how i didn’t like the library when i was new to brookline but now i am settled and i love it
thomas vh came back and watered the plants
musa plants hung around the place
banana plants are dormant under 70 (carina: like you)
i felt hygge (right after pbj, looking at cypress sniffing in the watering can and batting the insides, listening to tom speak on the phone about mai an, the lamps turned on, me reading voices of brookline, carina  on the couch with her book and a big comforter, my side heated by the stove, and looking at the tall ceiling and decorations and cd’s organized on the shelf. the lighting yellow and warm)
we walked back at 520, briskly, and arrived at comm ave as the sun set and we went inside ten minutes early. so we sat on the couch and i asked to look at her instagram (which is really fun)
she went in and the tattoo artist, a bleached blond small lady with a black outfit showing her arms full of small tats, printed and enlarged the mountain goat
we ran into romy- she was making an appointment!
she was led into the other room
i felt calm and slightly tired
she took off her clothes and laid on the massage platform
she got a tattoo
the lady, talking to the other man who appeared to be done with his last job and settling in for the next/cleaning up, told him about being intimidated by her little niece who was 7 who told the tattoo lady ‘she’s weird’. made me and carina chuckle
got the tattoo of a mtn goat by the sun
carina was on the phone with dot while i went to the bathroom
i drank water from carina’s metal blue smith bottle
we walked down the heated stairwell, ran to the other side of the road (the lights were running out) and saw mama’s car
we went in, i was in shotgun
we picked nadia up from 68 parkman
she hugged me from behind in the carseat
talked about kumon and hw and japanese tutoring and hw lifestyle
talked about being a scientist and cs engineer at google and oracle (which jan vitek has experience in)
nadia- apparently they find out what youre good at and make you do it over and over again
we drove the beautiful night path to sobro
got out, it was cold
mama gave us the chinese new year cookie bin
and the chinese salted vegetable cookie flaky pastry things in small packets (from china)
we played hearts ( i lost miserably)
i played music from the computer (debussy/gymnopedie?)
mama made egg with tomato and mountain yam with mushrooms and cucumbers in a fancy plating and fried tofu with sauce and rice
i ate a lot of fried tofu which was so good (crispy outside, creamy tofu inside, not too soft)
and tonkatsu (so good)
poured the egg and tomato sauce in my rice and it was yummy
we ate sweeties
and japanese candy (almond rice krispie’s tiny squares and chess cake - nadia figured out it was chestnut mooncake, and it was amazing)
hokkaido butter candy for carina and nadia
we looked at the phys ed classes offered at rice, cornell, and smith
nadia’s taking swedish massage with her friend next semester
the cornell fishing pe classes ‘attract weird people’
she talked about materials science class which was so hard and one of her anecdotes about the tests was really funny (1- she once got a 20/100 on a quiz) (2- one of the bonus q’s was about a candy bar where you had to name the candy and the manufacturer and one guy was super against her spreading the name)
she talked about cornell stereotypes (cornell ppl don’t know how to read)
realized i was seeing them for the last time in a great many months
we put on our heavy coats and shoes and walked out
carina and nadia thanked mama for dinner (we ate so much)
mama was talking to amy (rosie’s mom), and she checked in with me before i left
and i led them to the right direction and i led them to the right direction
walked nadia and carina to the uber on the intersection of south
talked about lydia
said goodbye to nadia and carina as they went into their uber
we hugged
i walked to the gym, and it was a really happy walk, reflecting on my time with carina and nadia
i had to pee really bad
i worked out in the dark with terrible form (it’s ok tho)
the residential place was so warm and cozy and empty
thought about talia, thought about max
the cold cold sky
bertucci’s, brueggers, cvs
the shortcut home bc i took off my second pants, and my legs were cold in just leggings
home was so cozy
walked the long way back home tho (w shortcut)
ate a pear and orange
texted stella about her fave netflix/utube things
watched i love egg ep 1 and 2, a few mins of marie kondo, and third of uss callister
wrote carina an email to clarify which pb she used
texted rachel abt hanging tomorrow
wrote blog post
felt really happy
today felt like a long, complex, infinitely detailed stream of experience. i suppose that’s what it is
writing it out made me realize how much i left out and how much little joy complied into my greater contentedness and happiness at the end of the night
it was a great journey
