To Paradise and back- Chapter 1

Astrid Hofferson ran as fast as she could along the harbor with her best friend Heather Wellmann. The big white cruise ship that was supposed to take them to the Caribbean was already waiting for them. The ship was supposed to leave soon and they were late. In the distance they could already hear the calls of Heather's brother, Dagur, who was already waiting for the two women with her boyfriend Eret at the railing. “Hurry up ladies.” “Come on, Heather,” Astrid cheered, grabbing her friend by the wrist. Heather laughed with her and the two ran onto the ship as quickly as they could. Laughing and completely out of breath, they stood in the magnificent, modern lobby of the cruise ship. Dagur and Eret, both dressed in colorful Hawaiian shirts, walked towards them. Dagur clapped his hands, a cheeky grin on his face. "That's what I call a sprint, ladies." Astrid huffed and blew a strand of her silky blonde hair out of her face, which fell to her waist. “Well, what can I say, boys. I wasn’t the champion in track team in high school for nothing.” From the corner of her eye, Astrid saw her friend wrap her arms around her lover. An image appeared in her mind's eye. A laughing couple lying together in a Hollywood swing and eating grapes together. Sam and her. She missed him so much. She gritted her teeth uneasily and pushed this too-beautiful, sugary-sweet memory out of her head. Sam had left her and out. There was nothing left to feel or miss. It was over. “Hey, Astrid, you’re okay,” asked Dagur, lovingly nudging her in the arm with his elbow. Astrid jumped briefly, but quickly regained her composure. Nodding, she forced a fake smile. "Yeah, I'm fine." She spun around to grab her white bag that had been resting next to her turquoise suitcase. "How about if you guys could help us with our pastries." "With pleasure, Astrid," Eret replied and immediately threw Heather's heavy suitcase over his shoulder. “You, show-off,” Heather giggled and gave her boyfriend a quick pinch on his impressive arm muscle. "Hey, only the very best for you." Dagur and Eret helped the girls bring their pastries to their cabin, of course Heather shared one with her boyfriend, Astrid had one all to herself, which she really liked. It was beautifully spacious with a bed covered in white sheets. In one corner stood a rosewood dressing table with a mirror that appeared to have been made of crystal glass. It even had a small balcony with a table and two chairs. But what surprised her most was the bath, which she thought was worthy of an empress. With a jacuzzi and a magnificent shower, the glass of which depicted the colorful motifs of a Caribbean reef. She collapsed onto the cloud-soft mattress and decided to unpack later. Now she wanted to enjoy the luxury that she would no longer have so quickly after this unique trip. She could finally forget all the stress of her work, she loved the gym, but it was usually very stressful because she had one yoga or Zumba class after the other every day until 9 p.m. Added to this were her debts, which she couldn't pay off because she wasn't paid much as a fitness trainer, and there was also the argument with her parents over her separation from Sam. It was a miracle for her that she celebrated her twenty-first birthday on a goddamn cruise ship if Eret and Dagur hadn't won the big competition. As far as she knew, the two of them had won eight tickets and before they left, Eret had mentioned that he had asked some of his friends if they wanted to come with them. Astrid didn't know any of them, but she was still very excited to meet new people and forget all the crap from home. She would get to know Eret's friends, but first she would get some sleep. She snuggled into the soft pillows and enjoyed the slight rocking of the ship as it began to move.

Always figured this was the case since both Oyin and Emily were involved in other projects around the time of filming (Oyin was starring in Orah and Emily was directing Rosebud which she also wrote) but it’s nice to see it confirmed. One thing Discovery always seemed consistent with behind the scenes was leaving an open door for its actors.

Something tells me that if ever they decide to animate “The Crow of Paradise/The Paradise of a Crow”, this could be made into a film.

Or a live action?

I am on the first pages and I am seeing à la Wong Kar Wai scenes on my head with a young-ish Takuya Kimura as Hajime Yasuhara. (Okay, probably i am still holding on to his Howl voice, but he’s not only that.)

When it comes to manga adaptation, however, Natsumi Matsuzaki admitted that adapting it to manga is a challenge.

Matsuzaki : "The Crow of Paradise" came out right after we started the comic version of "Master"... I didn't know anything about the content of (Paradise), so after reading it, I thought, "I've gotten myself into something serious."

[Note: "The Crow of Paradise" is the first book in the second part of the Yatagarasu series, released in September 2020.]

… I was reading it at a café in Ikebukuro, and as soon as I finished reading it, I called (Abe-san) over... Abe was like, "Oh no, I've been called out!" (laughs). So, when I went to meet her, she looked at me with sparkling eyes as if to complain, and I thought, "Oh, good. It seems like 'The Crow of Paradise' will be okay..." (laughs).

Matsuzaki: But after that came out, and then the next one, 'The Crows of Remembrance,' I started to think, "This is getting difficult to adapt into a comic..." Is that so...?

Abe: From the perspective of the original author, this work is part of a series, so there is an overarching theme for the entire series. However, if you focus solely on that, each individual work might end up being incomplete.

Matsuzaki : That's right. It becomes blurred... The theme is too large.

Abe: That's why I create "major themes," "medium themes," and "minor themes." For a standalone piece, I focus only within that piece. For a main work, I focus only within that main work, and I resolve the "minor themes." But when you connect them all, a larger theme emerges... It's like creating a "mosaic picture."

Matsuzaki: But I haven't been told what the picture will look like. I try not to ask about the theme of a standalone piece, the theme of a main work, or the themes going forward. Instead, I interpret the words and events written in the current original work myself and try to create a coherent narrative.

So self aware of its tropes and like the innate rules of that world and how the characters #Used those rules to their advantage. It was like a fantasy au where light was a prince who ran away from his marriage and he went to live #with ryuk. L was the king of the magical forest and he was investigating some trouble. The plots manage to merge and Light and L meet #while they are investigating their own respective cases. The side characters were fun and all contributed to the story in an imporatant wa #death note #death note fanfiction #ao3 fanfic #lawlight #I hope im just dumb and it wasn’t deleted so I can read it again but if anyone has that fic save plsplspls (if thats cool with fic etiquett #help finding a fic #I love you author for writing but im in despair for I now know what paradise looks like and can’t go back is this how light felt

All-Star Comics (1940) #8, published in October 1941

#this is pretty striking for a comic story from 1941 #it would be a stronger story if she was motivated to sacrifice her ‘eternal life’ and ability to come back home to Paradise Island #for more than just love for a man she’s only known while he’s unconscious #because she herself is not characterized as being motivated by feminist ideology #and it stands out that the goddesses task the Amazon’s champion with protecting America #which is ‘the last citadel of democracy and of equal rights for women’#from ‘the forces of hate and oppression’#as opposed to improving America by bringing Amazonian ideology to it #as I’ve sometimes seen portrayed in more modern media #though of course this is getting close to when the U.S. would join WWII #when criticizing the government and other official institutions would have been definitively off-limits #and Hippolyte does say she will ‘fight for liberty and freedom and all womankind’#I’m surprised that Diana is only known as ‘daughter’ and ‘princess’ on the island #and is only given the name Diana when she’s about to leave #I do like the emphasis that ‘in a world torn by the hatreds and wars of men- appears a woman’#it’s also interesting that Diana is ‘as wise as Athena- with the speed of Mercury and the strength of Hercules’#instead of her abilities being totally gender-segregated as they are with the Marvel Family characters #noting that Diana is said to be ‘as lovely as Aphrodite’#which is not incomparable to Mary having the ‘beauty of Aurora’ as one of her ‘powers’#also there’s a lot of emphasis in Mary Marvel’s WWII-era stories about her being dismissed or underestimated because she’s a girl #and her proving that wrong #but never any direct language about women’s political rights #dc #diana prince #hippolyta #my posts #comic panels

in honour of my beloved albedo's birthday im showcasing my personal favourite team of his which is double geo spread (i swear it works its fun pls try)

#fun fact: this was the team i used to 36* abyss for the first time #funny story behind the team building actually #i had Very limited character options bc 1. i had no nahida #and 2. my dendro lumine was in second half bc i used burgeon for the triple kenkis #i had collei kuki and yaoyao but they were not built at the time 😭😭😭#so i couldn't do hyperbloom or pair him with another dendro #but i wanted to clear abyss so i was like let me Try some other options #i had my core of alhaitham zhongli raiden for spread #thought of fischl first then kazuha as the 4th option #but i don't like using them in spread teams so i scrapped that idea #thought of xq and use hyperbloom raiden instead #but i used my only triple em paradise lost set on thoma so that's out of the picture #(i could've used gilded but i didn't have em pieces levelled up bro what was i DOING BACK IN 3.4 LMAO)#and then i remembered albedo's passive........ that gives em to the team when he uses his burst.......#i was like holy shit PERFECT #tried it out in abyss and got 36* 😭😭😭 i was so happy bc i could use 4/5 of my fave characters in one cycle #(rip venti tho i didn't use himshskjdksjsj)#so yeah this was long idk if anyone read all of this but this is my favourite team to slot albedo in LOL #there are better spread teams ofc + now that i have nahida and yaoyao built i always put either one of them with alhaitham #but i encourage all of you to try out some variation of this team it's fun i swear LMAO #lou.txt

#guess what musical ive been relistening to .#but the musical is very hard to get plot beats out of cuz theres so many story gaps between the songs. hence why im here #even though this is the book's wiki page. and im pretty sure the musical and the book differ a lot. but still.#brot posts #music #back in middle school when i was in my musical phase (phantom/monte cristo/jekyll and hyde/etc)#and also just old literature in general phase (divine comedy/paradise lost/etc)#i really wanted to try to read the source material #but like. i was in 7th grade. i had no fucking idea what the hell was going on #i tried so hard to read paradise lost LMAOOOOO #like girlie pops you are 11 you havent even read shakespeare in class yet #so after i gave up on paradise lost i gave up on reading everything else as well.#although i do think i tried to do phantom at one point in middle school but also barely got through it #and then i tried it again in high school and only barely got a little furhter #though the high school time was just cuz i didnt have the patience #so yknow sitting here its very easy to say i would love to read the count of monte cristo instead of listen to the musical #but will i actually read it? probably not #god looking at the wikisoruce for it. its long as fuckkkkkkk man im not reading this LOL #ive read jekyll and hyde but thats because it was pretty short so the patience aspect wasnt a problem #so j&h is the only musical-based-on-1800s-literature that ive actually read the source material for. <3

wow i always forget how little time there is between the first great glacier trip and the munna arc. its like 3 filler dungeons a pop

#i dont think this is a huge deal gameplay wise though. at least compared to the other games #bc if you wanna slow down the pace and grind up paradise points then you do that in companion mode at no real cost #besides not being able to use your hero/partner #i personally dont mind that though cause i love emolga and hes usually the one left behind #and besides him there are plenty of gen 5 mons in this game that i love playing as #buuut story wise it can be a little distracting to get back from one huge trip then take another pretty much immediately after #like rescue team and explorers both had more time between their journey arcs #(though i wouldnt say rescue teams is the best pacing wise)#that all being said- im only just now realizing the pacing when you find out about the balls of light-#that very same night is when munna finally connects with you and you become her new target #which is clever and a good subtle bit of foreshadowing that somethings wrong #echoed voice #pmd posting

#im sorry it took me so long to answer this i was waiting for the fireflies to wake up #and while waiting i had a busy day helping my classmate with the field work for her master's along with a couple of our other classmates #we were sampling river invertebrates and tracking previously tagged fish #in the most gorgeous turquoise-watered golden-leafed forest paradise in the middle of nowhere #and we had such a great time despite being wet in -2*C weather for the whole day #we had those work boots that reach up to your torso but most of our arms were wet and that can get really unpleasant in cold weather #but our awesome dad of a professor took us all to a cafe for hot drinks afterwards (i had hot chocolate and it was sooo good)#(after feeding us tangerines and all sorts of cookies all day)#and the 2 hour car ride back was so much fun too #he has one of those fancy cars with heated seats so we defrosted pretty fast #and he was telling us his crazy stories the entire time #the madman used to have a pet lamprey as a kid that he caught in a brook near his house #and kept it in a tied plastic bag filled with water on his nightstand #im gonna delete these tags in a while for privacy reasons but for now i want to ramble about the great day i had #inside the firefly mailbox
