BOTD: Bare-throated Tiger Heron

"A large but rather short-legged, primal-looking heron of mangroves and freshwater marshes in tropical lowlands. Often in areas with trees, but also around ponds in rather open marshes. All plumages have naked yellow throat skin (not always easy to see), greenish legs. Adult has gray cheeks, finely barred plumage, and rusty thighs; immature is boldy barred blackish and warm brown (hence the name ‘tiger-heron’)."

Bird of the Week: The Rufescent Tiger Heron! 🪶

Saw a post abt these guys and knew that had to be the bird of the week.

Rufescent tiger herons (Tigrisoma lineatum) also known as banded tiger herons, are beautiful little beasts.

The juveniles of this species have a distinctive bright and spotted appearance, whereas the adults are characterized by a bold red plumage.

These birds can be found in wetland/swamp areas of South America and southernmost parts of North America

Along the water’s edge, these creatures feed primarily on fish and small invertebrates such as insects and crustaceans.

9. What calms them when they are upset?

Well, her main coping mechanism is alcohol. She usually manages to get herself drunk enough to forget all of her problems…Either that or she’ll get so pissed off that she’ll blow up about the problem and start an argument (like she did with Chess at the sleepover). Before the alcohol, though, she had a journal that she would write and vent in. Annleigh found said journal after Farrah died and just wanted to throw up because she only ever saw Farrah as a stupid, childish, alcoholic nuisance. It never occurred to her that Farrah was a scared little girl who just needed help and support.

21. What is their fondest childhood memory?

Farrah doesn’t have very many happy childhood memories; she was emotionally neglected by her parents (I mean, she had this bad of a drinking problem at the age of 15, with no rehab, no support, no nothing. There’s no way she wasn’t emotionally neglected), and then her parents got divorced when she was eleven. But then, when Farrah was thirteen, her dad started seeing another woman…and this woman had a daughter. Farrah was over the moon because she’d always wanted a big sister to laugh with and watch movies with and do makeovers with and gossip about boys with and be best friends with. Those hopes were dashed pretty quickly, but they were nice while they lasted.

12. How do they sleep?

Prior to canon, she had a really good sleep schedule. She went to bed relatively early, got her 8 hours, and woke up refreshed in time to watch the sun rise. This way she always had a bunch of energy each day. When she starts going to North Shore, she is very confused as to why Janis and Damian send memes to the groupchat at 2 in the morning. But post-joining the Plastics, that changes. See, the Plastics don’t have a normal sleep schedule. In fact, Gretchen sometimes brags about the fact that she can function on so little sleep and so much coffee. So, naturally, Cady takes on this behavior. She’ll be up all night partying or texting Aaron or doomscrolling Instagram.

24. What do they wish they could change about themselves?

A lot. When she first joins the Plastics, she wishes she was better at socializing and at flirting, and generally being more like the Plastics. Sure, she learns all the tricks, but she wishes that it would just come natural to her. And then after realizing how much damage she’s caused, she wishes she weren’t so impressionable, she wishes she didn’t care so much what people thought, she wishes she had stuck to her morals.

One substantial issue I have run into throughout creating Outcasts of the Rift is scale. How do I make assets look consistent to each other in size and proportion? This is especially a problem with the character portraits. Now that I am creating more and more character portraits, I've begun to run into this problem. Here are a few solutions I devised. Which solution do you think looks the best?

Showing characters as their actual size, even though some will look really small (although you should keep in mind the game's native resolution is 1080x720.)

Showing characters at a more aesthetically pleasing size, even if their sizes proportionate to each other are incorrect.

Showing large characters in the foreground, which limits their full-body animations and could block other characters' portraits.
