It's kind of funny to me from a historical perspective Mon El spent so long as this hanging thread in the Superman line of books Then he gets transferred to the Legion and his relationship to THAT becomes the animating force of his character for the rest of his existence. Action Comics 306

Honestly mon-el is hardly the worst instance of bland white hetero male character from the cw, but when you consider the circumstances of his character being introduced (abusive misogynistic showrunner self inserting) and the show he was introduced to (a show supposedly centered around a woman, with the ostensible purpose of her breaking free of the shadow of her more popular male counterpart) it does shoot his utter unlikeability through the roof past his more onerous peers.

see i wasn’t around in s2 so i didn’t/don’t know any of the behind the scenes stuff about the character choices or anything. i popped in right around the end of s4 i think and even then, years on, there was a lot of hatred toward mon-el that imo had the bang of a specific type of terminally online tumblr-callout-post off it. like just weeklong threads fighting with karamels and big huge posts about how problematic he was etc etc when honestly he’s like… fine, in the context of what he is, which is a cw character.

i honestly believe mon-el (and winn to an extent) both were victims (in this fanbase) of the modern online thing where we strive to equate unlikeability with moral failings to prove our own points; like it’s not “i hate this guy” it’s often “i hate this guy and he is problematic and here’s a callout post listing why.” and i totally fell for it because i went into this rewatch waiting for him to be this horrific unlikeable scumbag and he was pretty much fine.

obviously i don’t like the guy because straight men annoy me and we all know kara’s rightful place on earth is on her knees between lena’s legs, but all in all the ire that this fandom had for mon-el really does feel quite pearl-clutchy and overblown in retrospect lol

when you take into consideration the fact that gamorra, a political narrative that’s borrowed from ANOTHER set of books that only recently merged into the dc universe, it’s like... what did you expect jay nakamura’s story to be about? sure, FINE, you don’t wanna see a story about superman saving a boat full of refugees, and maybe you just don’t care for this twink in a green mask that is clearly recruiting jon for some shady shit. and that’s fine! you can hate jay for being a pink-haired twink with shady underpinnings. totes fine. i still think hal’s a green fascist even after seventy years of character development, BUT THAT’S OK. we each have our no-no’s.

and while reading LOSH, i finally got it! i thought about how, narratively, it makes PERFECT SENSE why jon and lor zod get married in the future, ESPECIALLY if the earth does get destroyed. if the earth is gone, then so are all of jon’s roots and ties to his human side. it would really only make sense for him to marry a zod, give half his dna to zod’s scientists, let them slap it together with lor zod’s, and thus produce children that could continue to help repopulate new krypton. plus, we know jonno’s stronker than his pops! a zod plus an el with those pesky human genes that makes him stronger? i know in my heart dru zod himself drafted the marriage proposal and took it to clark while he was just tryna have dinner with his wife and son. unfortunately, bc of this decision, mon el now exists. le sigh.

AND IT’S DURING THIS SHIT ASS LOSH RUN THAT I REALIZED... well of course jon/lor zod makes sense in the narrative. jon’s a plot device. he’s the most powerful fucker in the world, arguably. not yet fully realized, hella pretty, falls in love easily. it makes perfect sense that he’d give into an el/zod union if would make peace. and really, nobody really cares about bendis’ LOSH implications, bc it is such a stanky run, but it’s there. and apparently it’s ok bc it makes sense, bc hey, the zods are SUPPOSED to be evil, so why WOULND’T they try to rope jon into marrying their son so that they can be the universe’s power couple? it’s par the course for the zod famileh.

so why does it make people sooooooooo uncomfortable that jon is dating, in the current timeline, someone who is arguably just as politically inclined? what is it about some asian twink with a podcast that THREATENS fandumb’s delicate sensibilities, and i realized..... it’s cuz he’s literally not lois.

by FUNCTION, he is lois, and is arguably, jon’s central and most important love interest. but jay is NOT lois. he is not even lois adjacent. he is a revolutionary. he’s a refugee. he’s asian. he has pink hair, and apparently that makes him effeminate. he sometimes dresses up like a ninja, but it’s the pink mop that makes him look like a girl lmao.

and, oh yeah. the haterz in-universe think he’s a terrorist. lex framed him as one. in-universe reddit and 4chan DEFINITELY thinks he’s a terrorist.  batman thinks he might be one too. his friends, aerie and wink, certainly were at one point.

so what happens when the son of superman the god, someone who’s supposed to do better and BE better even when the options are all garbage, starts dating a guy who is being touted a terrorist by a billionaire, a foreign government, AND people on reddit?

well, that’s just too woke now, innit? this is woke. this is what happens when kids learn CRT. they end up falling in love with terrorists. superman can’t love a terrorist!! siegel and shuster rolling in their graves.

except anyone Who Can Read and DID read KNOWS that, that’s not true, and the fact that lex, bendix, and the people in-universe FRAME the revolutionaries as terrorists is literally a meditation on how OUR world frames the question of the revolution, youth-led revolts, and anything not being shielded with rose-tinted glasses. it’s literally a common theme in fiction these days. it’s a common theme in LIFE.

and it’s FASCINATING to see how a thematic element in a comic book that’s geared towards 12-22 yr olds garnered such OUTRAGE, when that thematic element is played on like every other tv show and i think.... oh people are CRAZY crazy now. and not just crazy, they hate being uncomfortable, and dont like that jonno’s not in a traditionally white hetero romance that’s solely dressed in black in white in terms of morality and politics, like lois and clark are. and no, im not referring to the new anime where lois is racebent, this is not a factor in this convo. historically, and up until recently, the question of lois and clark has been and still is a deeply americentric approach at truth and justice, aka the american way. lois is the star reporter, the uncoverer of truths and part of the reason why justice gets served, but she does it the AMERICAN way, the way white people always have and always will find palatable. and that’s fine! these comics have a history. they have a pedigree, and ppl love them for a reason.

but jay doesn’t fit into that mold. he’s not even pretty to look at, in terms of conventional handsomeness, and that seems to be by design!

cuz it’s not just jay being brain smart that makes folks uncomfortable, but that he holds a Frame of Reference that even jon doesn’t really understand. his mom might be a military brat and his dad a refugee’s who’s DEEPLY assimilated into the land he was able to find refuge in, but jay is decidedly NOT assimilating. lord knows how many cops, armymen, and green lanterns we got running around, but jay’s not a lantern, and he’s certainly not US military. he’s the son of an ousted politician from an asian nation most ppl dont really care about. he’s got pedigree that’s decidedly NOT americentric. he’s NOT invested in truth and justice done the american way. he literally does everything unamerican, including seducing superman’s son, to make ends meet and make his revolution happen, and man oh man, that shit makes the intellectually conservative fandumb so damn UNCOMFORTABLE!!! his broke ass was able to bamboozle jon kent AND dick grayson! he went to take down a dictator the rest of the world saw as a hero! and superman joined him! and dick grayson funded the campaign!

Favourite supergirl episodes from any season?

This is another guilt-inspired long-overdue reply to your ask, and I hope that the wait is worth it! I am so sorry that I didn't see this before now.

Despite its many, MANY flaws, Supergirl is a show that I do find myself going back to when I'm looking for a surefire source of comfort. I can remember many a sick day watching episodes from season one (For the Girl Who Has Everything, Human for a Day, Red Faced, and World's Finest being some particular favs). I also have a real fondness for any crossover episode between the Flash and Supergirl, though I realize that not everyone can stomach the Flash's characters and show writing for various reasons.

I'd say if I had to pick, my top five episodes, one from each season (please don't mention season six to me I haven't been able to bring myself to do a full rewatch) are in no particular order below, with the caveat that these are personal, oftentimes guilty-pleasure favorites that I recognize don't always ooze consistent quality from the first minute to the closing credits!

For the Girl Who Has Everything - No matter how many times this Black Mercy story is done I love it, from the comics to the animated JL shows to this episode. Brilliant concept that holds up really, really well over time.

Luthors/Ace Reporter - Lena Luthor showcase episodes. Season two I have very fond memories of watching despite in hindsight remembering all of the various plot threads that I was not a huge fan of, but if it's an episode where Lena gets a hefty dosage of screen time, then sign me up. Luthors is where you go for the angst, and Ace Reporter is literally one of the only episodes where I find the Mon-El hijinks kinda... enjoyable!

Girl of Steel - between the moments with Alex and Lena to the fact that this is one of the rare episodes that turns introspective on Kara's character, I have a huge soft spot for this one. There are plenty of great moments from season 3 -- the Reign fight, Sam Arias as a character in general, Lena and Supergirl's crumbling relationship versus Lena and Kara's intensifying friendship -- but overall I think this episode rocks.

4x19/4x20 - This one might be a controversial take but I fucking love season four for what it is. The first half of the season admittedly kinda sucks ass but starting at 4x15 going all the way through the season finale I remember LOVING as I watched it live, and I still enjoy it now. Out of that stretch of episodes though, I'd have to say that my two favorites would have to be the ones above. As back-to-back episodes American Dream and Will the Real Miss Tessmacher Please Stand Up was absolutely fantastic television that was hitting all the right spots for me, and I mean it when I say that I never loved Supergirl more than I did during those last few months that s4 was airing.

Event Horizon/Tremors/It's a Super Life - these three episodes from the very sad season five all have one thing in common, and that's the thread of Kara's identity reveal to Lena, which is obviously a premise that did and continues to enrapture me from a story-telling perspective. While I still think the show fell wildly short of what they could have done with this plot, these episodes have glimmers of what could have been, and as a fanfiction writer who sometimes just needs a thread to start tugging at, that's always been enough for me.

This has now evolved into a very long response. Consider it penance for me inadvertently ghosting you for so long! Thanks for the ask, and I hope this is an interesting read!!!

Hugh stood quietly in the coffee shop, pretending to occupy himself with a dead cellphone with a pair of headphones in — an attempt to avoid awkward small talk with strangers.

“Huge Rock?” The barista called out, confusion obviously apparent at the name scrawled on the cup. The daxamite kicked himself, stumbling over his words as he ordered, and giving the wrong name. He tried to compensate, twisting ‘Hugh’ and ‘Rok’ into something that he claimed was a nickname from school, but he was fairly certain the woman both didn’t believe him and most definitely didn’t care. He retrieved his drink and settled into a corner of the café, watching people from beneath his dark hood as they milled about. Each moment was an opportunity to learn how to further disguise himself as human, to fit in with others so as to not draw attention to himself.

“Mike M?” Another barista called out the name, the familiar man taking the coffee before occupying a seat a few down from Hugh. He couldn’t help but turn his head and steal a glace at this Mike fellow, the features reminding him of someone so familiar but oddly foreign at the same time. He pulled the earbuds from his person before wrapping them around the dead cell and shoving it into his pocket. No. It couldn’t be. The Prince of Daxam, here on Earth? He needed to see the man’s face from the front. It was the only way to tell. Hugh sipped on his drink, paying no mind to the scalding liquid that burnt the inside of his mouth. He took a breath, fist clenched around the fabric of his sweatshirt as he gathered the courage to use his voice to one that was one of his oppressors for so many years.

“Excuse me, but do you have the time?”

Clark flew high above Central City, heading towards the cries that pierced through the dull roar of the planetary sounds that usually bombarded him. Smoke could be seen billowing into the sky, and sirens heading toward the source of the flames. A relatively small three-story apartment building had caught fire, and much for the firefighters to handle as the red and orange flames blocked the primary doorway.

Arriving well before the fire engines, Clark swooped in, scooping a victim up in each arm before moving them to safety. It was on his second trip out that he saw another, unfamiliar caped hero arrive on scene. As he left the victims with the paramedics, he addressed the newcomer. “There are still victims trapped on the second and third floor. Our focus needs to be getting them out first, then I can handle the fire.”

Lois felt a wave of relief as the elevator doors slid open, realizing she was only a few meters from her flat. As the early afternoon sun crept over pure cerulean blue skies, the heat of the day quickly wore her out. A presumably quick trip into town to run errands resulted in throbbing ankles, backache, and heat flash. Thankfully, just as she was thinking of hailing a cab back home, she ran into Mon-El passing on the street. She flagged down the foreign prince and shamelessly requested his assistance in hauling her bags, thrilled to encounter a friendly familiar face. As courteous as ever, he carried the majority of the baggage and kept her company on the way back with good conversation. Lois sincerely enjoyed his company; following their initial encounter a few months ago, whenever they crossed paths, it was as good friends. And one can never have too many of those.

Lois balanced the bouquet of wildflowers she purchased to brighten up in living room in the crook of her arm as she fished for her keys. "You are a lifesaver, seriously" she continued to praise as the air conditioning blasted her flushed skin. Thank the lord. "You can put those in the kitchen" she directed, kicking off her shoes and following after Mon-El's taller form. "I insist you let me repay you with lunch and something cool to drink," it was less of a suggestion and more of a mild dictate, the look her her face not leaving room to argue. 

"I've got leftover lasagna and fresh lemonade made by yours truly" lemonade was about as much as she could make without setting the kitchen on fire. She was capable of handling simple dishes, but everything beyond spaghetti and tacos was delegated to Clark. “Let me just pop it in the oven to warm up”

Mon-El hadn’t seen Kara since he had returned, but he knew she had been busy. Alex told him she’d pass the message along that he was looking for her, but he wasn’t sure if she meant it... after all, he had hurt Kara more than once and she was protective of her younger sister. Sitting at the bar, chatting with a few other aliens who were alone, he waited... hoping she’d come meet him.
