all fanfiction exists on a scale between "painstakingly engaging with canon" and "the characters are my dollys and the universe my dollhouse and i will put them wherever i want and make them do whatever i want"

#and i don't mean this like a strict AU vs. in-universe. AU's can do a great job engaging with canon and in-universe can be very dollhoused #though my go to example of dolly fanfic is the sugar daddy au where steve rogers was a sugar daddy to young artist loki #i read that description and had so many judgements because it would make more sense for those roles to be reversed #but i had to make peace with the fact some writer wanted to depict captain america sugar daddy loki and that's ok #sometimes people just want to put a character in situations for Reasons even if it makes no sense with canon #santagno
