The Phantom Rider, Sonic's "hero" status, and Sonic's love for his friends: a poorly put-together analysis

so, ive seen a non-zero amount of people say that Sonic taking on the alter ego of the Phantom Rider is out of character for him, and my knee-jerk reaction was to disagree (though, im biased, because i adore the Phantom Rider). but then i thought about the why of it all -- why does it not feel out of character for Sonic to disguise himself to cause chaos?

part 1: Sonic will break the rules

well, first of all, Sonic doesnt really care too much about being a hero. he helps people because he wants to, not because its expected of him. weve all seen those satbk cutscenes reposted to hell and back, so let me be the millionth to do so

when Merlina tells Sonic that, upon taking Caliburn, he would become the villain in everyones eyes, he shrugs it off. and even later, when Gawain tries to talk him down from battling Merlina, Sonic dismisses the idea that hes doing this out of some kind of chivalry or duty, that he fights because he wants to.

there are many other instances of Sonic not really caring about rules or social conventions, and gladly breaking them if it means he can save people (dude literally runs from cops in sa2), but its never directly stated as explicitly as it is in satbk.

so, Sonic doesnt care about being a hero, and doesnt care about being a villain in other peoples eyes if he knows hes doing whats right. youd think with this facet of his character, him actively disguising himself as the Phantom Rider would be antithetical to this point, right? if he doesnt care about being seen as a villain, then he shouldnt have to mask his identity. its a fair conclusion to come to, but it also ignores what i think is one of Sonic's core personality traits;

part 2: Sonic loves his friends a lot

its strange to me that not a lot of people bring this up, because he does! from "and Amy... take care of yourself," to "I'll have you smiling by the end of this," Sonic just genuinely loves his friends to death, and doesnt want to sabotage them.

if he runs out there to cause chaos during the clean sweepstakes, completely unmasked? everyone who knows a single thing about Sonic will start to assume bad things about the Restoration. just because Sonic has good intentions doesnt mean hes above the rules, and acting like he is can put people he cares about (namely Jewel and the Diamond Cutters) at the mercy of public opinion.

he cant act like hes above the rules, especially when hes directly associated with the Restoration (even if hes not a part of it) during the clean sweepstakes.

(id also like to point out that here, Sonic doesnt even consider it a bad thing to be completely and utterly chaotic and disruptive at first; Tails has to remind him its a bad idea)

and understandably so! we see how everyone reacts to seeing Sonic as the Phantom Rider, especially Tangle -- its a tough pill to swallow, especially without all the context involved. to an outsider, it looks like Sonic is just trying to sabotage the clean sweepstakes because hes being a sore loser (or, really, any other number of malicious reasons)

but, really, i think that the point im trying to make is summed up best by Amy and Sally (even though its in Archie)

thats just not how they do things. they dont want to cause necessary chaos or danger just for the hell of it, and they certainly dont want to associate the Restoration with that sorta thing -- people look to the Restoration for hope, and while Sonic is associated with it during the clean sweepstakes, his hands are a bit tied. itd be a total dick move for him to basically throw his friends (and especially Jewel) under the bus like that, and he knows it.

Sonic may not care about his reputation in other peoples eyes, but he cares greatly about how his actions affect his friends.

part 3: the conclusion

its easy to assume that, based on how lax Sonic is with rules and social conventions, him disguising himself just to cause a distraction for Amy and Tails to get attention off of them would be out of character. but, based on the circumstances, i think that it makes enough sense given the context for him to take the route that he does.

hmm now that im thinking of it i wonder if takenaka wouldve been more or less susceptible to the divine tree. bc psychic powers normally seem to give some level of resistance to mind altering effects but also. it seems like its more likely the opposite would be true for him bc of the way the divine tree spreads

I am SO curious about this yeah. literally what was he up to.

I feel like love for the divine tree was so strongly induced that people's thoughts about it could have seeped through his earplugs and he went "whaat the fuck is going on?" ALSO!! It's so interesting to think about how those thoughts Felt, because Dimple manipulated people's true feelings so they would develop their own kind of love for the divine tree. Meaning those thoughts were technically the "voices of people's hearts," but maybe felt unnerving and artificial anyway.

I do like the idea that he has less defences against that sort of stuff. It's probably most likely since he can't stop his telepathy naturally and is constantly exposed to people's thoughts if he doesn't have his earphones/earplugs in. My fuckass esper who can't form any barriers at all or see ghosts or levitate things with his mind...

BUT I think MOST of his susceptibility actually comes from his desire to be cool and normal and go with the flow. He loves fitting in!! Also his hyper-focus on like social cues and stuff. If someone told him "you're not into divine tree? don't be weird man" he'd fold immediately. He'd probably resist more if the brainwashing was coming his way via telepathic thoughts only, no matter what mental defences he had. But if it was the physical atmosphere he probably wouldn't resist it too much. His ass was NOT escaping the herd mentality!!!

Art I did during my break but don't wanna post on main but you know what. I like Levi and Richard (and Arienne the redhead).

Basically, Levi and Richard go to school together, Richard decides to go by the name Richard and the only person to without question go along with "I'm a boy now" is Levi who calls him Dick. And then gets into fist fights with boys that don't call him Richard. So Richard falls pretty much in love in school then his parents divorce and he moves away.

Many years later (10+) Richard meets Levi again and it's very much nothing grand. Levi overhears Richard introducing himself to someone and is like "lmao Dick? You work here now? Sucks to be you" and Richard is immediately 'I love him so much I hate myself for how easily I give up all dignity for him' but yeah. They work in different departments so Levi does more behind the scenes stuff while Richard talks to clients and is very social.

And their coworkers in both departments love Richard because he's such a nice guy and Levi's department hates Levi a lot cause he's an asshole. (then stuff happens that would require a tw blah blah blah) So after a month of Levi not being at work he returns and Richard immediately goes over to the department to check on him and he's just. Incredibly mellow. No cussing and no cockiness and worst of all, he's being called Richard which is very much not correct from Levi. So he points it out that no one else calls him Dick and if he had a problem with it he would have said something by now so hey, maybe don't suddenly change the entire friendship on your own. (So Levi texts him later to say "sorry for being a dick, Dick" and Richard is v happy and content with that turn out)

Richard is honestly tragically created out of spite for the fact I saw a name IRL and I know that the state that I live in would in fact NOT have someone that intentionally funny and trans so I have to make my own funny trans guy to fill the void.

Can i just say guys, holy fucking macaroni, like. I know i say this a lot, but the reception for hunger au has been like NOTHING ive ever experienced before, and im so incredibly grateful for it. Genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much-- writing hunger au has probably been my best overall experience of 2023 and thats all thanks to yalls lovely comments, bookmarks, kudos, and asks i get in my inbox about it. The bandages around his neck were itchy and reminded him too much of his collar. He watch Pline approach the couch where he sat. "You look sad." He stated. "When I'm sad I watch the news. Look!" Pline grabbed the remote and clicked on the tv. The local news was already on. "What city are we in?" "Kalins. Shh, watch," A blonde with a horrible fake tan appeared on screen. "Thank you Tom, in other news, it's been announced that April 2nd, a parade will be held in Farinsburg in honor of the missing prinxe. The parade will include floats, marching bands, and volunteers will be passing out candy, so be sure to bring your little ones," "You know why I like the news?" Pline brought Kane's attention to him. "It's cause my family used to watch it all together. Every Saturday at eight there was some report on the royal family and me and my sister used to fall asleep because it was past our bedtime. Then Mom and Dad would carry us back to our beds and tuck us in. The news reminds me of that," Kane twisted his fingers, unsure what to say. "Oh! I should make my house a window!" Pline jumped from the couch and ran over to his Lego house that he frantically pulled apart. Kane was surprised at how drastically his friend's mood changed. Tammy chuckled from the doorway. "With this being the second disappearance within the royal family, it makes you wonder, 'is our country truly safe?'" On the tv a picture of the missing prinxe and the prince who has long been thought dead. No one found a body though. The prinxe's skin was warm and soft, their black hair neatly combed. They had dark brown eyes and a sharp facial shape. Tammy looked between the boy and the picture, connecting the dots. "We all hope for prinxe Kane's safe return home," Her jaw dropped. "Are you…. are you the missing prinxe?" He sheepishly looked at the floor and nodded. "Yeah…. yeah kinda," "What do you mean kind of? Yes or no," Kane snapped to attention. "Yes ma'am," Tammy's face softened. She'd seen so many hurt children. So many hurt and sick and dying. But there was something so different about this kid. She watched how he tensed like a bowstring under her gaze. The last time she had seen a kid so emotionally worn down was… when Pline came home. Tammy knelt down in front of Kane. "Tell me your name," "Kane?" "What's your last name?" "Torth… I'm Kane Torth." He felt some relief in stating his name. After being stripped of everything… it's nice to know that something was still his. "What's your middle name?" "Octavia," "Why were you named Kane Octavia Torth?" "My mom named me after the guy from the Book of the Fallen, Kane Jackè. And my birth mom's name was Octavia. All of my siblings middle names came from their birth mom," "Is your birth mom nice?" Kane understood that she was trying to distract him. It was working. "I never met her, she disappeared right after I was born. None of my siblings really talk to their birth moms anyways," "I'm going to report that you're found, and p—" "Please no!" He cried out. "No please, he'll find me, he—he'll know where I am, please! I don't want to go back! Don't make me go back!" Tammy held his face, making him focus on her. "The bad man is not going to find you. Okay? I won't let him." She allowed Kane to calm down before adding, "can I bring you to the local police?" He shook his head. Tammy racked her brain. There had to be somewhere she could take him to make sure he gets home safe. "What if I take you to the capital? What if I take you directly there?" Kane's eyebrows knitted in concentration. "That would be okay… if you're willing to bring me there. I don't know how far away we are," "Kid, I am making sure you get home safely, okay?" Kane chewed on his lip, hoping he could trust her word.

hellooooo ive made a uc fankid oc <3 more about her under the cut, so that this post isnt a mile long <3

her name is Dyllin, because i had to, and shes SO cute. Shes got a little lopsided grin, and one dimple, and the cutest smattering of freckles on her nose right where her fur starts to turn pink. Both Rian and Atty are trans, so they raised her gender neutrally until she could tell them who she was herself (thus atty using they for her in that one art), and when she was about 3 she said she was a girl and now she wears all the pretty flowy dresses she can get her hands on (uncle foq supplies many of them)!

in the art above shes: 14, 16 (colored in), 19? (lines), ambiguous age younger than 3, 5?, and also 5. I think that ill mainly draw her as a little kid or around 14, cause those ages are where more interesting dynamics happen with people. Lots of funny kiddy moments, and growing into your own person moments. Which! is what im about in fankids! beyond just drawing a cute kid and having fun with design (which im also all about but just to give an explaination for why im drawing her at those ages). I dont think i want to go into adult ages for her yet, cause for the moment its about her being a fankid for me.

She takes after Chet and mostly Foq much more in personality than either of her actual parents, so shes a very carefree happy-go-lucky kid. To Rian's absolute horror (see below, for their rage at finding out), Foq flounces his way into being a archfey and becomes her warlock patron when shes a little kid, but its alright Aunt Scenda is her cleric deity so shes got a balance for his chaos! (she doesnt balance shit but it does make rian not kill foq over the pact so! whatever works!)
