Classic Key Visual Novel ‘Kanon’ English Release Announced

Visual Arts/Key has announced an English release for Kanon. The classic game was Key’s first title back in 1999 and started the brand. It’ll come to PC via Steam but no release window was revealed.

Kanon tells the story of Yuichi Aizawa, a young man staying at his aunt's after his parents moved overseas. Seven years have passed since he was last in this town and his memories of back then are fuzzy.

On the day he moves, a young girl called Ayu Tsukimiya bumps into him. Later, he will get to know other girls who’ll become important in his life, including his cousin, Nayuki Minase, who studies in the same class as him.

Kanon had a recent Switch release by Prototype but that edition was only available in Japanese. This new Steam release marks the first time in 25 years that the game will have English subtitles as an option.

Kanon was Key’s debut title, with Jun Maeda at the helm of Makoto’s, Mai’s and Sayuri’s routes while Naoki Hisaya handled the others. The duo had also worked together on MOON. and ONE, and are well-known for their relevance in establishing the nakige genre (visual novels that pull at your heartstrings).

The way Ambessa talks about the Guile is interesting. She speaks of it with such suspicion, dislike, and literal resentment. At first you'd assume that her attitude is driven by her fued with the Black Rose, but we don't know how long that's been going on, or if this was her own bias prior to it. Under the lens that these are Ambessa's own preconcieved biases before she got involved with the BR then it immediately becomes a critique on her own family. You just can't divorce her comments from how the show depicts her children, from Mel.

Almost every word Ambessa used to describe the Guile describes Mel, except "absent honor" of course. And when you understand that, it becomes clear just how doomed Ambessa and Mel are as mother and daughter. Ambessa indirectly, without the intention to imply Mel, states that her distaste for the fundamental aspects of Mel's personality. Ambessa loves her daughter, but she doesn't LIKE her.

when I first joined the bsd fandom after watching the show, it was about mid-April. I spend the first few days looking at fanart and trying to find blogs I liked, spying on the tags daily to see who was active, the usual.

I knew I liked Chuuya but it was funny to see how much fan content the barely-there background character got. I got it though. He's the first one I drew because I liked his design. Plus, I was seeing something about a new light novel with him as the protag having just come out.

What I didn't know was that his birthday was coming up. A few days before it I started seeing a sudden increase in Chuuya fanart. Birthday wishes started flowing in. They wouldn't stop. The day before, the day during, the day after, but also even beyond that. It lasted for a week. That was the most extended birthday party for a fictional character I had ever seen. People were willing to post their pieces days after the date had passed!

And then I really understood the power that Nakahara Chuuya possessed over this fandom.

After getting caught up in the incident that provoked your rather abrupt exit, you presumed him to be dead, and he you.

Leonora (f) :

The owner of the alchemists shop next door to you in Kemorlen. Despite her saving your life (numerous times) and helping you to create a new life for yourself there, she remains a figure that you know surprisingly little about. She's blunt, impulsive, skilled with a sword, and definitely hiding something. All in all, you don't quite know what to make of her.

Augustine (nb) :

A quiet, unassuming healer who arrived in town shortly after you did. Surprisingly squeamish and possessing a dry sense of humour, they have quickly become indispensable in helping you deal with the everyday magical difficulties of Kemorlen. Their past remains a mystery to you, and you suspect there may be more to them than first appears.

Mira (f) :

A charismatic bard who wanders the roads of Aiolos collecting stories, gold, and animal companions after being exiled from her home kingdom. She seems to attract trouble, but as long as the resulting chaos makes for a good tale she doesn't appear to mind much.

Theodorus (m/nb) :

A spirit with patchy memories and a thirst for revenge after being accidentally brought back from the underworld. They're awkward, restless and struggling to reconstruct a life for themselves in a world where they are supposed to be dead.
