SOME SURPRISE / Not so short story

[So when I started with this list I thought those stories would be about 500 words each. Then after I got a few done I thought, okay, maybe 500 words is not enough for some of these prompts, I’ll just keep them all under 1000 words. Then some stories got a bit longer still and I thought to myself, okay, around 1000 words each, then. Then… Well, this one is over 2000. Sue me.]

For everybody who wanted to see Matteo in black leather doing things to David and for everybody who wanted to see jealous David…

We’re dating and I didn’t know you were a mobster/biker

David checked his phone again. He’d been standing in front of the coffee shop for nearly twenty minutes now, waiting for Matteo to show up. It wasn’t that he minded waiting for Matteo - to be honest, he’d wait a lot longer for Matteo - but he was getting a bit worried. He had tried to call Matteo a few minutes ago, but it had gone straight to voice mail.

He supposed a delay of a few minutes was not too bad, though. Matteo probably just got held up in class for some reason.

A smile appeared involuntarily on David’s face, as he thought about the blonde boy he had met a few weeks ago. He didn’t know how on earth they had been studying at the same university for almost two years, knowing a lot of the same people, even being both somewhat involved in the LGBTQ+ group on campus, without ever running into each other earlier - but they finally had been introduced to each other, and they had hit it off immediately. They’d been going on several dates since, and David already knew he really, really liked Matteo.

Matteo was so laid-back and easy-going, compared to David, who was always pushing himself to be the best at everything he tried. Matteo’s nonchalance was refreshing. David also appreciated the other boy’s dry humour, his wry self-deprecation, his sly remarks. He was charmed by Matteo’s cute clumsiness and his quiet thoughtfulness. He liked how Matteo took his time, thought before he spoke, didn’t need to be loud to get his point across. They laughed a lot, hung out doing nothing, letting their inner child out. It just was all very easy with Matteo. And his big, sky-blue eyes didn’t hurt either.

David couldn’t remember if Matteo had class this afternoon, or if he would be coming from home. He peered both ways, trying to see if he could detect a lanky figure in multiple layers of baggy clothes walk up, when a sleek, shiny motorbike turned in to the street. David was impressed by the machine. The driver seemed to control it masterfully, lying flat with the bike in the turn, and revving it up smoothly. David looked at it wistfully. He’d always kinda wanted to learn how to ride a bike. He thought it would be so cool, to just get on and drive away into the sunset, dark and mysterious. As he was watching, the biker parked across the street. David’s eyes wandered from the chrome and metal to the rider, who turned off the engine and got off in a graceful movement, their leg swinging high. David stared at the slender figure in tight-fitting leather, moving like in a carefully orchestrated choreography. He noticed the strong legs, the curves of the calves, the way the black fabric hugged the biker’s thighs. He kept looking as they bent over to take something out of the saddlebag, and he blushed as he noticed their ass. A tiny flash of guilt crept up on him - it was probably not very appropriate to stare at some hot biker while he was waiting for his date - but it wasn’t strong enough to make him turn away his eyes from the delectable sight in front of him.

It just - it did things to him, okay? He felt his breathing go slightly shallow and a blush taint his cheeks as he watched. The person across the street was effortlessly sexy. It seemed a bunch of girls agreed with David, as they stopped right next to the mysterious biker, and preened, smiling coquettishly, unconsciously adjusting their tops, their hair, their earrings.

The biker then stood up, his back to David, and took off his helmet. He shook his head, and slid a gloved hand through his tousled blonde locks. David smiled. He did have a thing for blonde men, remembering how Matteo often made a similar gesture with his hand to move his hair out of his eyes.

The girls started giggling, a few of them bravely saying something to the man, moving closer. One of them put a small hand on the guy’s upper arm, and suddenly David felt a pang of jealousy. He wished he could ever be that confident, to just walk up to a hot guy and let him know he was interested.

Then the guy turned around, looked straight at David, and smiled.

David felt his heart skip a beat - make that a couple of beats - before it started drumming hard and fast in his throat.

The girls kept throwing simpering looks at the leather-clad man, smiling, winking, circling around him – and David couldn’t do anything but watch in horror. He felt bile rise in his throat as he saw the guy’s lips moving, saying something to the girls, which made several of them blush fervently. He wanted to run over there, push each and every one away, and stake his claim.

Before he could move, however, the man made his way towards David.

The girls stared unapologetically, and David couldn’t even blame them. It was a very, very nice view.

“Hi,” the blonde boy softly said, leaning against the wall next to David. “Sorry I’m late.”

David blinked, his mouth open in confusion, staring at the hot body in form-fitting leather, then slowly moving his gaze up to the softest blue eyes he had ever seen.

Matteo shifted, looking a bit uncomfortable.

“Uh,” he started, his voice uncertain, “Is everything okay? You’re not mad, are you? I was visiting my mom and I should have left a bit earlier, I’m sorry…”

“You ride a bike,” David blurted out unceremoniously.

“Uh, yeah,” Matteo replied timidly after a short pause. “It used to be my dad’s. He wanted me to learn how to ride it, like a real man or something.” He huffed humourlessly. “My father isn’t really happy about me being gay, to put it mildly. Anyway, it comes in handy sometimes, but I don’t use it often.”

“Why not?”, David asked, his eyes alternating between the motorcycle across the street and Matteo looking all dangerous. “It seems those girls think it suits you.”

They both looked over, where the girls still hung out, occasionally throwing a come-hither look at Matteo. The latter shrugged, visibly embarrassed.

“Oh, uh, yeah, that happens sometimes. They seem to think it’s hot, or something…” His voice trailed off, and he shrunk into himself slightly, a blush on his pale cheeks, clearly self-conscious.

“No kidding,” David muttered, rolling his eyes.

“What?”

“Nothing.” David collected himself. Matteo looking so ill at ease reminded him he was still the cute, fun boy David had been hanging out with, although the exterior seemed to have morphed into someone else entirely. “Come on, let’s go get coffee.”

Matteo smiled, and they went in together. David glanced over his shoulder at the girls, who seemed to realize they wouldn’t get to talk more to Matteo any time soon, and continued on their way. Good riddance, David thought possessively, as he put his hand on Matteo’s biceps as the girl had done earlier. If Matteo thought it was strange, he didn’t show it.

However, David’s torture wasn’t over yet. The barista, a cute brunette with glasses, started twirling her hair around her finger when Matteo walked up to the counter to order, and her voice was too high-pitched to be natural when she asked him for his name.

“Oh, Matteo,” she tittered. “Are you Italian? How interesting!”

Matteo replied slowly, “Half. Uhm, David, what do you want?”

The brunette glared at David, but took his order nevertheless. David shepherded Matteo to a table, touching him as he did so. He was painfully aware that more than one head turned as Matteo passed through the crowded space to the nearest free table. It was time all these girls realized who Matteo was on a date with, David thought grumpily.

They sat down, and Matteo smiled at him again, and David melted. He never realized before how gorgeous Matteo looked like this, a sort of half smile, half smirk around beautiful lips, his blue eyes sparkling like the sea on a summer day, with sunlight reflecting off of it, his hair falling over his face, his cheeks all rosy. He wanted to take a picture of it, to look at late at night when he couldn’t sleep. Suddenly he craved more - he wanted to ask Matteo to make things official, to be his boyfriend, to ask for permission to kiss him senseless.

But then the cashier called out that their drinks were ready, and David hastily got up. He didn’t want anybody else to have a chance at flirting with Matteo. He brought the drink over, and it seemed like another crisis was averted, until he noticed the phone number on Matteo’s cup. Matteo saw it too, at the exact same moment, and they both stared at the innocent numbers in black sharpie.

“Seriously?”, David hissed. He never knew he was the jealous type, but right now, he wanted to claw out the girl’s eyes.

Matteo looked up, and the smile had disappeared, as had the joy in his eyes.

“Uh, sorry about that,” he mumbled, but David was fed up with the whole business.

“What are you apologizing for? It’s not your fault every girl in town is trying to flirt with you, is it?”

Matteo recoiled from the anger radiating from David, and he immediately felt bad. It really wasn’t Matteo’s fault, and David shouldn’t take it out on him, but he felt like the situation was slipping out of his grasp. He could rip the head off anybody who as much as breathed in Matteo’s direction. Matteo was here with him, to hell with everybody else.

“It’s just that, maybe, if you were trying to get phone numbers from random girls, you could do it at some other time. You know, when you’re not on a date with me.”

Matteo’s mouth dropped.

“What? I’m not trying to get any phone numbers! And definitely not from some random girls! I’m gay, remember?”

“Yeah, well,” David murmured, somewhat chastised by Matteo’s outburst. “I’m sure you could get some boys to throw themselves at your feet, too.”

Matteo gaped at him.

“I wouldn’t be interested in any of them, either,” he said, quietly but calmly, and with such determination and conviction that it threw David for a loop.

Matteo was looking at him, unblinking, his coffee forgotten on the table between them.

“Why not?”, David finally whispered, after a long silence in which neither of them moved.

“I’m already here with the guy I want to be with,” came the reply, stead-fast.

David swallowed, as the envy coursing through him died a swift and painless death.

“But, Matteo,” he hedged, “you could get anybody…”

“Stop,” Matteo interrupted, “just stop right there. First of all, this,” he gestured at the black leather, his helmet resting on the chair next to him, “this is not who I am. Yeah, some people think it’s cool, and they want to flirt a bit with a badass biker, but I am the furthest from that anybody could ever be. You liked me when I was stupid and stubborn. You liked me when I sent you silly memes. You didn't care that I was nervous and gawky and lazy and looked like a bum in my sweatpants and thrift shop jumpers.”

David tried to protest, but Matteo put a finger against his lips. The intimate contact made the hair on David’s neck rise, and a delicious shiver ran down his spine.

“And secondly…”

He stopped himself, suddenly looking down at the table, removing his finger from David’s mouth. David immediately mourned the loss of it.

“Secondly?”, he asked breathlessly.

“And secondly,” Matteo mumbled to the green Formica tabletop, “secondly, I don’t want anybody else. You are so cool, David, and you don’t even see it. You are so talented and smart and you would walk to the end of the earth to reach your goals. And you’re pretty hot, too,” he finished, a bit bashfully, looking up at David from under his eyelashes.

“You’re not so bad yourself,” David said, trying to make it sound like a joke, but instead it came out as total and utter admiration. Matteo laughed, anyway.

They sat for a long beat, looking at each other, a tentative smile on their faces.

David imagined riding home with Matteo later, his arms tight around Matteo’s waist, his body plastered to Matteo’s back. It made him feel warm and fuzzy with excitement.

“Uhm, does this – does this mean we’re, like, together? I mean, are we boyfriends now?”, David finally asked.

Matteo nodded.

“I would like that, if you would like it too.”

Their smiles grew a bit bigger, as David hummed affirmatively.

“Can I make that fact clear to everybody who might be thinking of slipping you their number too?”, he then inquired.

Matteo looked confused, but nodded hesitatingly nevertheless, and David leaned in.

Their kiss was explosive, and should make it abundantly clear to everybody in the room that Matteo was not going to call any other phone number any time soon.

Gotta love picture day...and seeing as I haven’t wanted to make much of anything lately, this was kind of nice to just sit back and do.

First up we got some new ones:

Aiden Taylor - the younger brother of Michelle and Noah Walker, Aiden was removed from the parental home when he was either 2 or 4, I’m not entirely sure which just yet. Following one of Noah’s fits in a store and the elder Walker’s reaction to it, social services were brought to the home. Noah was removed as well, but he was, for some reason, released back into their custody. Along the same line, Mr and Mrs. Walker never came to pick up their other son and Aiden was processed into the system. He was in and out of orphanages around New York and moved around quite a bit until he was 7 and was finally adopted by the Taylors. Madeline Taylor fell in love with him immediately and after meeting Mr. Taylor, Aiden went home pretty quickly as a foster and around his 9th birthday he received the signed adoption papers in one of his cards. The Taylors are both somewhat magically inclined, Madeline is involved in a coven in the city that actually does some pretty good magic but growing up exposed to it, Aiden has picked up some natural talents and eventually joined his mothers’ coven. His father believes in magic but doesn’t practice it, he says he grew out of it but believes fully his wife possesses “gifts”. Aiden works at 13th Moon Emporium near Central Park with Logan, Grayson and a young woman he has a crush on but has somewhat slid into the friend zone with. (His mentality on that is at least she’ll be in his life) Aiden has a piercing in his left eyebrow and apparently has his tongue pierced too, he plays with the ball between his teeth when he’s bored.

Grayson Lewis - Grayson pops into my head every time I’m packing orders and this time he happened to do it and bring Aiden into my head with him. Anyhoo..the most I know about him is that he usually packs the monthly spell boxes with Aiden, lives in an apartment above the store and has known Logan longer than most people. He mainly manages what Logan refers to as the Herb Bar, where most spell ingredients are on display in large glass jars (like the ones that used to have candy in them)

Ivar - Ish’kar and Enid’s 2nd son. His mother was under the negative affects of...I wanna say another shaman’s cure, when she was pregnant and subsequently gave birth to Ivar, who’s legs seemed to have no bones at all. The deformity never got any better and his parents were left with a tough decision. In meeting the ancient and rare Owlwitch, Ornecka, they were told that Ivar would one day fly on darkened wings beside the Queen of the Black Moon. Ish’kar had already professed to his wife that he couldn’t bring himself to kill his second son, whether the boy would ever be the same as any other member of his family, he could still pass on his father’s blood and if he’s to play a part in the betterment of their people, who was he to deny the will of their gods? Because of his inability to walk, Ivar’s upper body is incredibly strong and he has even become incredibly skilled in climbing trees and using a bow. His other siblings will occasionally take him on their hunting trips. His uncle, Folke, made him a special set of bracers for his legs, to make them easier to keep together and move as one. He had tried walking but an infection took control of one of his legs every time he attempted it and after nearly losing him to a fever, his mother forbade him to continue to try. When Norelia brings Ish’kar and his people beyond the Wall, some are taken to the hatchery to see if they have the gift. Ivar was with his father, mother and younger sister as they were seeing if any of the dragons responded to her. Instead, a massive black and red dragon approached Ivar and allowed him to pull himself onto her back.

Arthur Powell - Arthur likes this one quite a bit better, it’s more carefree...though one of the extra ones might also become his picture, I haven’t completely decided. A few things I’ve learned about Arthur in the last few days: He is an artist, painting, sculpting and even making his own open face dollhouses, furniture and ball jointed dolls for them. He finds focusing on small stitches for pillows or painting miniature banisters for stairs calming and it helps him control his hysterical reactions. He’d gotten into the dollhouses when his dad had bought one for Frankie’s 8th birthday and had Arthur help him put it together. He was also a theater major at Tulane University and took a handful of art classes as well. During his first performance as Billy Flynn in the university’s presentation of Chicago, his disorder nearly ruined the tap dancing/courtroom scene, as he had started laughing in the middle of his tap solo. Nearly doubled over with it, he had managed to stop himself and without really knowing what to do, he’d started dancing the whole routine again. The director told him most people seemed to think it was part of the performance, likening it to Billy mocking the “judges” by laughing about how stupid they were. It worked and had given Arthur a little more confidence. He has tried several times to live alone but for some reason it never seems to work out for him and he ultimately ends up going back to the Home he lives in down in the French Quarter. The last time he tries, he begins having issues due to Frankie moving out of New Orleans and all the way to New York by way of California. Arthur ends up moving to New York as well.

James Flint - James is actually Captain Flint from the Golden Age of Piracy (Sara’s story) as well as Prince John in England and in ancient Greece he was a sheep herder named Ionnes. Becoming one of Sara’s protectors after her escape from the Viking era, Ionnes takes her as far as he is able in trying to ultimately get her home. He is eventually “killed” by a warrior spear thrown by Ares himself, though when he meets with the Gods he tells Gaia how much traveling with Sara had come to mean to him and if he was able, he wanted to be something to her. He had a tumultuous several 1000 years, attempting to grow accustomed to his now more permanent place in the world that it drove him a little crazy, causing him to take over the Prince John persona in the middle ages in England. The real Prince was actually murdered somewhere on the road by the same group he attempted to hire to kill his brother, the King, so he could take over. Ionnes remembered who he was and why he was even in this time when Sara actually stabbed him following his killing of her husband, Guy. Begging for forgiveness from the Gods he gets a second chance as James Flint. As Flint, he generally manages to succeed in helping Sara, he also ends up showing up in California as well, as a heart surgeon. One thing about Ionnes/Flint that has actually stuck with him throughout his countless years is being gay. (He wants someone that looks like this:

John Knox - Lorelei’s brother, I keep thinking they’re twins but John is actually older than her by a couple of years. The two of them have been singing together since Lori could sing, and before that he used to play guitar for their grandfather. John has type 2 diabetes, though it’s pretty well managed, he generally takes a pill but has emergency needles and insulin if he needs it.

Zach Shields - Zach is a little complicated. He’s married to a sweet, special young woman named Clare and works as a professional landscaper but...he’s also hell on wheels in a motorcycle and sells drugs on the side. He and Gabriel have a relationship behind Ben and Clare’s back.

New guy 1 is a professor at Northwestern University in Chicago, he occasionally works with Emma Marcone in the Art History department. He also teaches anthropology and a specialty class that I can’t think of right now.

I got into an accident on a rainy day. I did not hold collision or comprehensive. Because I skidded into a ditch and the car rolled, an oil leak occurred. Our family has had State Farm for 70 years now, several generations, and in the last 10 years or so we have been progressively more & more disappointed in their caring and customer service. Maybe its just the 'assistants' that my local SF agent (who never talks to his clients any more) use, they both seem to have just horrible attitutudes, sarcastic, and act like you are a complete PITA every time you call. I even have an email from his main assistant that I asked her to forward to the actual agent because I was told he was the only one that could answer my question, and just today I was SHOCKED when I re-read the email, and saw in the forward of my email when his assistant sent it on to the actual SF agent, She said This guy will just not give up, he keeps haunting me about this issue! I couldn't freaking believe it. I was going to forward the email to SF headquarters in Bloomington IL, but then as I read more & more about state farm I saw they are completely independent agents in each office, and have literally NO ONE who is their boss or who can reprimand or correct them. This is unbelievable. If I treated my customers at my work place & gave them the rotten attitude treatment we get from our SF office here, I guarantee you I would lose my job. No one is in charge at state farm obviously. Back to my question - I recently bought a classic car I have been looking for a long time - getting it next week - it is 25 yrs old, all original & in perfect shape. Which of course is NOT an historic policy. You can get that on ANY extra car you have in your household even if it is a 2011 model !! She did say (and I understand this being required) that in order to have is classified as Antique/Classic/Historic, you have to have an appraisal done on the vehicle as if it just came off the show room floor -then the premiums would be much lower if you had full coverage on it, as historic/classic . If you’re all about the city, Portland’s downtown has a nice shopping core and lots of great dining (loved Bamboo Sushi), but the neighborhoods is where it’s at! Check out northeast Portland for more great food, neighborhoods you can stroll through and even book a spa day at the local Finnish spa (without kids though).

Family friendly Portland activities include the Oregon Zoo and Portland Children’s Museum (right next to each other), exploring the Pearl District and markets in Old Town, and hiking in MacLeahey Park.

Hiking idea: The Witch’s Castle hike is really fun and beautiful and it’s just outside of downtown. Easy 1.5 miles round trip and full of moss, streams and the ruins of what looks like a forgotten fortress. Trail-head is in Macleay Park from the UPPER trail area.

Note: you don’t see us recommend a lot of zoos because many are not up to date and have exhibits that don’t give the animals much space. The Oregon Zoo has made many improvements over the years, including a lot of construction right now, and boasts some of the best habitats we’ve seen in any zoo. Also, the Oregon Zoo is a part of several conservation programs, including the California Condor breeding program and the Pond Turtle release program, both of which are a huge part of re-establishing species back into their native territory.

There’s more to Portland, but these ideas will get your Oregon Coast road trip off to a great start!

Bonus plan: for some extra time and beauty in the Portland area, do the Columbia Gorge Waterfall Area. This mini-road trip takes you along historic Route 30 and and is full of waterfalls, including Multnomah Falls, and lots of great hikes.

Exploring Oregon’s North Coast

We’re diving into where we hit the coast on our most recent trip, but you can also alter our route and head to the very northern tip of the Oregon Coast to visit Astoria, Lewis and Clark National Historic Park and Seaside, Oregon. There are some great spots to stop for getting your Goonies fix and enjoying the sleepy side of the coast.

Cannon Beach, Oregon: views and brews

We always think of Cannon Beach as the place where One Eyed Willy’s boat set sail at the end of the Goonies, so naturally that’s where we started. Ecola State Park is just north of downtown Cannon Beach. It’s a must-visit.

In addition to the beautiful view of the sea stacks off Cannon Beach and beyond (epic sea mist for photos), there are some awesome hikes and beautiful beaches. While the weather erosion on the point at Ecola State Park has damaged many of the trails to the end, there are still hiking opportunities out of the Indian Beach area. And Indian Beach is actually our first beach stop on our Oregon Coast road trip.

Beach stop: Indian Beach at Ecola State Park in Cannon Beach is at the end of a two mile winding road through the coastal forest. You can hike the trails to other beaches or just head down the boardwalk trail to the beach. It’s full of driftwood, shells and a few streams, so it’s beautiful and perfect Oregon Coast. The sand is gorgeous and the cove makes for a great kid-friendly beach.

Note: if you see what looks like thousands of plastic pieces on the beaches of Oregon and Washington, know that they are actually dead jellyfish, not trash. They will sometimes swarm and get washed ashore, drying up and dying. It’s gross and cool at the same time.

Views not to miss: from the main viewpoint area at Ecola State Park watch the sunset facing south to see the shadows the sea stacks cast. Also from the same area, veer to the north a few hundred yards and sneak a view of the Tillamook Head Lighthouse 1.2 miles off shore (sorry, you can’t visit it)

Public Coast Brewing in Cannon Beach

Every town in Oregon has a brewery, I swear, and some have ten. Our pick for great micro brews in Cannon Beach is Public Coast Brewing. It’s just outside of the main touristy area of Cannon Beach, but not too far. Walk the block and a half to enjoy their IPAs and burgers.

FYI, dining in Cannon Beach is more expensive than you expect because it’s the closest beach town to Portland, but most places will make sure the value matches the cost. At Public Coast Brewing we had $13 hamburgers that came with nothing but the burger on its own was worth every penny.

Recommendation: the Sitka Burger and an Imperial IPA. Delicious combo and a perfect example of Oregon Coast brew houses.

Cape Meares Lighthouse

Heading out from Cannon Beach on our Oregon Coast road trip, our next stop is the Cape Meares Lighthouse. If you’re looking at lighthouse stats and features comparing them all around the USA, you’ll not think twice about visiting Cape Meares Lighthouse. Here’s why you need to make the stop: you can get right up close to the beautiful, intricate first order Fresnel lens. It’s awesome, especially with kids that like to see how things work.

Also to check out: the tiny town of Garibaldi has some great little seafood shops and places for nautical knickknacks.

Local activity: whale watching out of Garibaldi is ideal in the spring and fall when the grey whales are going past. If you’re lucky, you might get to see minke whales, transient orcas or even the random blue whale (with crazy good luck!).

Tillamook and all the cheese

Find me somebody that grew up on the West Coast and you can bet they’ve been to the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Tillamook Cheese and ice cream and butter and everything else are staples in West Coast homes. They are delicious and pretty darn wholesome. And you can visit the factory for bottomless samples! #cheesedork

Our favorite thing to try and buy (every time) are the cheddar cheese curds. When we went to Wisconsin the cheese curds were always fried and served with dipping sauces. On the Oregon Coast (and up in Washington too) we like our curds fresh, squeaky and cold. Delicious. On our most recent trip we got to try a new cheese, the first new cheese offering from Tillamook in many years: Cape Meares Cheddar. It was like a tangy Gruyere and for a cheese lover, it was to die for.

Note: as of Spring 2018 the new visitors center at the Tillamook Cheese Factory was still not open. It’s slated to open Fall of 2018, but you know, construction timelines…

Pacific City: the gem of the Oregon Coast road trip

Once upon a time in my teens I thought it would be cool to take a little detour on my own crazy Oregon Coast road trip and drive on the beach when I got to Pacific City. It was perfect! Designated areas for driving, very flat beach area, gorgeous view to enjoy… and then the tide came in and I sank and had to wait, full of anxiety, as the winch truck drove from an hour away to rescue me… as the waves lapped at my Blazer’s tires. Everything turned out okay, but I ended up staying in Pacific City.

Fast forward twenty years and Pacific City, Oregon is the perfect Oregon Coast destination with kids! We like to break up our road trips with downtime and having a home base, so Pacific City served for that on our most recent Oregon Coast road trip. We rented a VRBO right downtown and enjoyed beach time, tide pools, kite flying, and sunsets.

Cape Kiwanda and picturesque Oregon Coast views

Pacific City is located just to the south of Cape Kiwanda, a breathtaking cape jutting out into the Pacific Ocean. It is a protected area, but you can climb its dunes, hike its trails and explore the tide pools all around the base. The best time to sit and appreciate this perfect site is at sunrise. With the sun coming up behind you, Cape Kiwanda glows orange unlike any other piece of coast we’ve seen. It’s beautiful and romantic (if you’re into that).

Brews at the Beach in Pacific City

Of course we enjoyed the local brewery in Pacific City! Our VRBO was less than a block from the Pelican Brewery so we took full advantage of it for our weekend of relaxation. With more than 15 beers under their label, Pelican Brewing Co has some great standards and seasonal options at all times. The Umbrella IPA was our favorite.

Tip: if you stop at a brewery you love, get a growler of your favorite beer on tap to enjoy at your place or the beach (confirm open container laws before drinking in public). You can reuse your growler as you continue on your Oregon Coast road trip! NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE.

Yaquina Head Lighthouse

As you leave Pacific City you start to head down into the more rugged parts of the Oregon Coast. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is a state protected area inclusive of hiking trails, cliffs, tide pools, an interpretive center and, of course, the tallest lighthouse in Oregon. A stop into the visitors center is required to get the lowdown on Oregon’s lighthouse history as well as to learn about the wildlife of the area, including the migrating whales.

Tip: you MUST stop into the visitors center if you want to get onto one of the lighthouse tours. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is only open to the public via tour. They do have a height restriction of 42” to participate (small kids can’t go up). This is common with tall lighthouses (check out our visit to the St Augustine Lighthouse).

Even without going up into the lighthouse, stopping at Yaquina Head is really cool. Watching for whales, visiting the tide pools and observing the harbor seal colony below all make it a great stop with kids. Make sure you bring your binoculars to spy whales both up close and on the horizon.

Newport, Oregon

Newport, Oregon is a pretty large town and has a cute bayfront area to explore. It’s another great option for a homebase on your Oregon Coast road trip (but we’ll share a different one) as it’s close to beaches, shopping, lots of dining, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, the Undersea Gardens, a few tourist traps (Hello, Ripley’s…), and it’s own lighthouse.

If you’re into festivals, Seafood Fest takes place in February each year and is the place to experience Oregon Coastal Cuisine, Oregon wine, and more. Newport also tends to have a bit better weather than some of its northern neighbors, so plan on hitting the beach and festivals with your classiest Oregon summer fashion (aka socks and sandals) and sunblock.

Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

It’s easy to miss the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse if you’re just driving right through Newport on your Oregon Coast road trip, but stopping is actually a great use of time. Built in 1871, the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is cute, wheelchair accessible (around the grounds) and not far off your course. It is open to the public most days, but you’ll want to confirm online or locally before making it a part of your primary road trip plan.

Cape Perpetua, Thor’s Well and Devil’s Churn

Rock formations and crashing waves are a big part of what an Oregon Coast road trip is all about. Driving south on Highway 101 from Newport you’ll notice that the road starts to swerve and wind. That’s because the coastline went from jagged mixed with sandy beaches, to rocky and untamed. If you’re easily distracted have somebody else drive so you can enjoy the views.

THE stop you have to make in this stretch of the drive is at Cape Perpetua. Part of Oregon State Parks, you have a few ways to enjoy the area. If you head up the hill you have several hiking options to get breathtaking views up and down the coast. Pulling into the Devil’s Churn area, you can see some intense coastal water features including the churn, more tide pools, Thor’s Well (a hike around two points) and even a spout/blowhole.

Tip: to see the spout you don’t have to do the big hike to Thor’s Well, but can simply head down the trail to the tide pool area and watch across the cove. A big wave will make a burst of water across the way just like a whale spout.

Haceta Head and the best view on the Oregon Coast

We’re suckers for beautiful views. I mean, who isn’t? Just past Cape Perpetua there are several pull out areas to admire the picturesque Haceta Head Lighthouse and beach below. Really, it’s the most beautiful view on the whole Oregon Coast. Be sure to stop and enjoy the crashing waves and sea lions below.

Haceta Head Lighthouse

There are two ways to enjoy a stop at the Haceta Head Lighthouse: 1.) relax in the beautiful cove area and have a beach/tide pool day OR 2.) do the ~0.5 mile hike up the hill to the actual Haceta Head Lighthouse and check it out up close. You can even stay in the keepers quarters at the lighthouse.

Tip: if you do want to stay in the keepers quarters, be sure to make the inquiry and reserve it the second you know you’re interested. Such cool and unusual accommodations book far in advance.

Florence, Oregon: a perfect Central Oregon Coast home base

Upon first approach or even driving through, Florence doesn’t seem like the dream Oregon Coast road trip stop or homebase. Rethink that right now! The town of Florence is set directly between the most jagged and beautiful parts of the Oregon Coast, it’s directly adjacent to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and it has an adorable Old Town area that has lots of cute shops and some great dining options.

We stayed at the Old Town Inn just off Highway 101 and it was great for our family of four. It was clean and quiet and located right next to the Old Town area and riverfront. Really, staying someplace small and unique made for a different travel experience and it felt good to support a small business.

Tip: the Oregon Coast, including Florence, doesn’t have many well known or top rated hotel brands. That said, “Inns” and seaside motels are actually quite nice sometimes and most are family run. READ REVIEWS of lodging before booking, but feel confident going off-brand for your road trip.

Easy road trip stop: going between Florence and the southern destinations, make a stop in Reedsport and check out the Umpqua River Lighthouse. It’s your stereotypical lighthouse, set nicely at the mouth of the Umpqua River and looks both charming and extra historic when it’s the afternoon golden hour (perfect for photo ops).

Activities near Florence, Oregon

We really had a great time all around Florence, Oregon. We took advantage of the town’s close proximity to beaches for fun relaxation in the sun paired with beachcombing. We also had a great time kayaking the freshwater lakes and hiking the dunes at Honeyman State Park… and then the dune buggies! There are several tour operators around Florence to take guests out on the epic sand dunes (we had a great time with Sand Dunes Frontier).

And if dune buggies aren’t your thing, there is also the option to ride horses through the dunes and to the beach. Due to weather and our littlest’s age, we just stuck around C&M Stables for a fun cow poke ride but there was another crew totally excited to head out for a full ride, no matter the weather.

One last spot that’s pretty cool and worth checking out if you’re interested is Sea Lion Caves. The largest sea cave in North America, it’s the go-to spot to observe hundreds of sea lions and beautiful sea birds. There is an admission fee per person, so families will have to fork out around $50 or so (depending on group size) and it really is pretty neat, but if you are doing your Oregon Coast road trip on a budget, you can observe sea lions lots of other places along the coast.

Coos Bay for epic coastlines and Lighthouse views

If you’re driving Highway 101 down the Oregon Coast you’ll have to go through Coos Bay. Upon first look, it might seem like a quiet logging town without much going on, but it’s actually a bustling place. Between some of the cool art deco buildings and the coastal themed street art, Coos Bay is a great stop for lunch or dinner as you continue on your road trip.

Coos Bay is also the gateway to some of the most aggressive waves and breathtaking strips of coast. To get to Sunset Bay and Shore Acres State Park, follow the signs to the Cape Arago Highway and head to the beach… or the cliffs. Sunset Bay is a great cove/beach area for picnicking and playing in the water. There’s a stream the kids can play in too, and even some tide pools at low tide.

Shore Acres State Park is perhaps the most fascinating place on the coast. The erosion of the coastline over time has formed some interesting features, not to mention that the luxury estate that was once there can still be seen falling into the sea. Also, you can visit the botanic gardens within the park, which do some really cool light displays during the holidays (or so we’re told).

Tip: due to its remote location, the State Park entrance fee machines in the area only take cash, so be prepared with some fives or ones, cuz that’s cheaper than a citation.

How to see the Cape Arago Lighthouse

The Cape Arago Lighthouse is out in the middle of the water, about three hundred yards off the shore. You cannot access it unless you’re doing something coast guard-ish, but you can see it and dream about being an old-timey lighthouse keeper (because that’s one of my three wishes in the event I meet a genie). So, how do you see the Cape Arago Lighthouse?

At Sunset Bay, skirt along the base of the cliffs at low tide until you get to the mouth of the bay and can see the lighthouse (slippery tide pool warning)

Pull over when driving between Sunset Beach and Shore Acres and walk down the clearly marked trail to the viewpoint

It really is a beautiful lighthouse and is my favorite to spy on the Oregon Coast road trip route, so take a few minutes to enjoy it.

Chillin’ out in Bandon, Oregon

Not Brandon; Bandon. Bandon, Oregon is another town that makes for a good homebase while you’re doing an Oregon Coast road trip. There are many small inns and even a couple resorts (with world class golf, if that’s your thing) that serve for an overnight or two.

Located on a small bay, Bandon has a cute little old town area similar to Florence. Restaurants, galleries and maritime shops dot the area so it’s perfect for an afternoon or evening stroll. There are also plenty of beaches on either side of the town, so if the plan is just to relax for a few days, this is the spot.

Tip: there are several options for whale watching out of Bandon, Oregon along the marina if you’d like to plan or go for an impromptu jaunt (depending on the season). Whale season tends to be April through September.

Coquille River Lighthouse

A highlight for us in Bandon was the Coquille River Lighthouse. This lighthouse is particularly interesting because it’s located ON the Coquille River instead of on a head or rock. No longer in operation, but still open for tours, the Coquille River Lighthouse is colorful and unique, surrounded by dunes and beaches. It is located within Bullards Beach State Park, so there are plenty of day use sites for picnicking or beach access.

Tip: plan a visit to Coquille River Lighthouse in the late morning so you can grab a picnic table or good beach spot for lunch.

Also, if your Oregon Coast road trip is going to be a camping trip, Bullards Beach State Park has a fair number of campsites. This is a great way to be close to Bandon without staying directly in the town.

Gold Beach for relaxing to the max

Gold Beach, Oregon is almost to the California border, but not quite. It’s a quiet town, very similar to Rockaway Beach, OR or Ocean Shores, WA, so its population and popularity changes with the good weather. While there isn’t a ton to do in Gold Beach specifically (except relax and fly kites), there are some cool sites to make for fun day trips.

Cape Blanco Lighthouse is just to the north of Gold Beach. It’s a pretty tall lighthouse and there are fun beach activities nearby if you’d like to make a day of it. Also a short drive (about 1.5 hours) from Gold Beach is Oregon Caves National Monument. It’s a really cool cave system to go through with an awesome National Park lodge, the Oregon Caves Chateau, where you can have a nice lunch or dinner in the hills.

Badass’ or Marshmallows’?

There are few well-known truths one can depend on in this world. Taxes, death, pain, heartbreak, and love are just a few. The consequences one faces for messing with the Danvers sister’s is another. They’ve always been fiercely protective of each other, Alex Danvers especially. No one ever got away clean with messing with her sister Kara Danvers. Alex Danvers was more physically protective of Kara. Kara Danvers was just as protective of Alex, she just preferred less physical tactics. Kara would make sure the whole school would shame you for what you did to Alex, very simply using her favorite weapon-words.

Life was, by no means, easy for the Danvers sisters. At the age of 5, Kara lost her parents, her friends, her entire planet. She came to live with the Danvers’ by sheer luck. When they took her in, she became infatuated with Alex, as many younger siblings do. Alex tolerated Kara’s presence in the beginning but soon grew attached to the easily startled, big hearted, wide eyed girl her parents brought into her home without her permission. As soon as that happened separating the two was impossible.

And they got into the craziest shenanigans.

In the middle of the night, about a year after Kara was adopted, the then 6 and 8-year-olds went to work with their parents. While there, they disappeared into an unused lab and started messing with the equipment. This was the day a 6 and 8-year-old accidentally figured out how liquid nitrogen worked. When Eliza and Jeremiah found them, Kara was down to one shoe and Alex had none. They were both lucky they didn’t have any physical damage. But when your sister is an alien who gets powers from the sun, what’s a little liquid nitrogen. The Danvers sisters were never left alone in their parents’ lab again.

In school, there was always that one person that tried to get away with picking on one of the Danvers sisters. It happened every year and every year the bully suffered grave consequences. When Kara was in 6th grade and Alex was in 8th, a new kid decided that Kara was too weird. So, he harassed her to the point of tears. The next week, his main course for lunch consisted of a worm sandwich. No one messed with Alex’s little sister, and she made sure the new kid knew that.

Alex Danvers was no stranger to being an outcast. That’s what happened when word got out that you took whatever measures necessary to protect you sister against bullies. The students tended to steer clear lest they provoke the wrath of 1000 suns wrapped up in a relatively short, yet feisty human female. What she wasn’t exactly used to was being made fun of. She learned this one Monday after a long weekend in 11th grade. She normally kept to herself and didn’t pay much attention to her peers. But it’s hard not to notice when everyone is whispering and pointing at you like you’re an animal on display at the Zoo. She’s standing at her locker when she hears what they’re saying for the first time.

“She’s a lesbian. That’s so gross. She shouldn’t even be allowed to go here,” Alex hears. She wonders for a minute who they’re talking about. Her question is answered when Kara comes up to her and asks if she knew what the school was saying about her. She didn’t care, her biggest concern is how the truth got out. Kara was worried about Alex. The question was answered when Vicki Donahue walked up to her and tried to throw her arm around Alex’s shoulders asking her if she wanted to make out like Alex suggested the other night. Alex moves to punch Vicki but she doesn’t get the chance. Before she can even raise her arm, the bitch is laid out cold on the floor. Kara was standing above her fists still clenched, lucky she’d practiced pulling her hits so much otherwise she might have been charged with manslaughter. After that, everyone in Midvale High School steered clear of both Kara and Alex Danvers.

The trend continued until Alex left for college. The kids in school didn’t exactly mess with Kara but they weren’t nice to her either. When Kara made it to university with Alex, it seemed that all was right in the universe again. The sisters got into things they shouldn’t, only this time, they had training on the equipment in the science labs.

As the first few months of Kara’s freshman year of college passed by, Alex noticed that their group had grown by two. Kara made friends with two guys, Winn Schott and James Olsen, in one of her classes. One night the three of them went out to dinner and ran into Alex. Kara called out to her and motioned for her to join them. So, she did, albeit a little skeptically. As the conversation continued, however, she could see why Kara liked them so much. They all had something in common. They were misfits. Winn was awkward and unsure of himself in social settings. James was more confident but he seemed reserved and quiet until he got to know the people around him.

By December of that year, the circle of people Alex would give her life to protect grew from one person to three. This was proven the night that she found Winn on the verge of a panic attack. He and James had gone to a party, Kara and Alex were going to head over once Alex finished her last final, celebrating the universities latest win in basketball and the end of finals. While there, Winn ran into a guy, Jason, he’d been talking to from class. They disappeared, like two people who are infatuated with each other do, to fool around in a random room. The person whose room it was walked in in the midst of clothes being thrown and started to leave apologizing for interrupting. At least he was until he saw that it was two guys instead of a guy and a girl. He rushed forward grabbed Winn by his shoulders and threw him backward to the ground. He landed on his wrist and heard a crack. Winn was unaware that Jason he was on the football team, he didn’t follow sports. He was also unaware that this was one of his teammate's rooms.

The guy, whom Winn learned later was named Maxwell Lord, that threw him to the ground started beating up Jason. Partygoers rushed to see what the commotion was. James forced his way to the front of the crowd and saw Winn on the ground. James moved to try and pry Lord off of Jason but a couple of behemoth football players stopped him. The more he struggled, the harder they held him back eventually turning to hit James until he went limp in their arms.

Alex and Kara walked into the house arm in arm, smiles on their faces. The smiles retreated, however, when they were faced with a group of people blocking the stairs. Alex stopped someone walking toward them asking what was happening. The response worried her, “There’s a fight upstairs a couple of guys were shagging up together.” Kara was one step ahead of Alex, using her super strength to clear a path up the steps. Kara and Alex stepped in the room and froze. James was laid out on the floor and Winn was clutching his wrist gasping for breath. Lord was still throwing hit after hit into Jason. Alex ran up, Spun Lord around, ducked under his fist and landed a hard kick to his groin. Lord fell to the ground groaning in pain. His two goons dropped Jason in a heap on the floor, running toward Alex. Alex dropped to the floor swinging her leg out spinning of a circle, tripping both of them. One started to get up and she kneed him in the face. The other moved to a standing position behind Alex’s back. He didn’t have a chance to do anything because Kara had him in a headlock before he took a step.

Alex helped Winn stand, gently draping his button up and coat around his shoulders. Kara picked James up and carried him out of the house to the car. They took the boys to the hospital to make sure they were ok. The next day all four of them made their way to Midvale to spend the holidays with their newly fortified family.

When they returned to campus following holiday break, the video of the Danvers sisters kicking ass had made the rounds through campus. The point had been made. Don’t mess with the Danvers sisters and don’t mess with anyone in their circle, or you will regret it.

When scheduling their classes for the spring semester, the four friends worked it out so they could all eat lunch together four days a week. During one of these lunches, three women approached their table. The laughing group stopped immediately and stared at the intruders.

Alex recognized one of the women from several of her upper division science classes. “Hey, You’re in my molecular physiology class with Dr. Pierce right.” She asked the tallest of the three.

“Yeah, that class is really interesting but could potentially make me pull every hair out of my head at the same time. I’m Lena Luther by the way.”

“Alex Danvers and I know what you mean but Pierce does an excellent job explaining the information.”

“Yes, he does.” The woman in the middle, shorter than Lena but just taller than the woman on the left, clears her throat. “Oh, right. Um, this is Maggie Sawyer,” she points to the woman who cleared her throat, “and this is Lucy Lane.”

“We saw the video of you too beating up Lord and is asshole goons and we just wanted to say thank you,” Maggie spoke up.

“Yeah, he’s one of the biggest pains in our asses. He talks to us derogatorily every time he sees us just because he disagrees with our lifestyle choices.” Lucy continues for Maggie dropping her voice to mimic (mock) a male jock voice.

“Your lifestyle choices?” Kara inquires.

“Yeah, Maggie here is like the biggest lesbian ever to lesbian, Luther is Bi, and I very happily and proudly identify as pan sexual.” Lucy finishes eyeing James.

“Cool it, Lane,” Maggie warns. “Anyway, we all met last year in the LGBTQ+ club on campus and we wanted to reach out to Winn,” she turns away from staring at Alex and looks at who she assumes is Winn asking with her eyes if she’s right. He nods his head and she continues. “We wanted to make sure he was ok and that he knew about the resources available to those in the community on campus.” Maggie finishes.

“We are open to all who would like to join though, allies included. Just so you all know.” Lucy adds still not removing her eyes from James.

“That won’t be a problem.”

“Oh yeah, why’s that Danvers?”

Alex scans the table making sure it’s ok that she speaks for everyone. Getting affirmative nods from her family she answers, “Winn and I are both gay, Kara here is pan as well, and James is Bi.” When she’s done talking she meets Maggie��s eyes smiling shyly.

“Well in that case all of you should come to our meeting tonight at 7 in the basement of the Union. We have stale donuts and water. Some of us go out after too, but you have to be of age to drink.” She invites momentarily dropping her smirk to meet the eyes of Winn, Kara, and James.

“We’ll think about it.”

“Alright, we’ll get out of your hair but we hope to see you tonight.”

The four nod and say bye as Maggie, Lena, and Lucy walk away. They end up going to the meeting that night and every week after that. By the time finals roll around this time Alex and Kara’s circle of close friends grows by three. The number of people they would give up everything for grows by three. Maggie and Alex are dating. Kara and Lena are dating. James and Lucy are dating. And Winn, well Winn met a very nice guy in the club named Clark, who just happened to be Kara’s long-lost cousin she thought had died when Krypton exploded.

To the outside world, Kara and Alex Danvers were two very badass women-badass sisters- but their friends know the truth. Yes, they can be badass’ when they need to be but, in reality, they are just incredibly protective of those they care about. When they let people in, those people see that they are truly teddy bears. Those people are also the luckiest people in the entire world.

Author’s Note: So I modified it a little bit in the age department. I saw the reader as a 18 or 19 year old when I started writing. I hope everything else is okay. Being Tony Stark’s daughter was no fun and carefree life. There was the constant fear of him coming back injured or dead from a mission. But even through the missions and all of the Avengers stuff, there was nothing like having to be compared to him. He was Tony Stark: Billionaire, Philanthropist, Genius, Iron Man. And then there was you. You were nothing special. You weren’t the top in your class or very social. You were more introverted and couldn’t even really be compared to your father. But that didn’t stop everyone else.

You had been in enough interviews and read enough online to know what people thought of you. It ranged from “Next Iron Man is Possibly Iron Woman?” to “Who Really is (Y/N) Stark?” and everything in between. Most people wanted you to follow in your father’s footsteps and become exactly like him. But you didn’t think you could even if you wanted to.

Yes you wanted to train and be a part of the team, but you also knew you wouldn’t be good at engineering or working in the lab. So what could you really do that would be beneficial? You would just be more of a burden than you thought you were to the team. You tried to stay healthy, and your body was physically good. Your head? Not so much.

After years and years of being compared to the Tony Stark and having all of these expectations thrust upon you, things got overwhelming and you began to question if you were good enough to do anything right. This started the bad thoughts, which led to self harming, which led to adding alcohol into the mix.

There were times when everything got too much and you began to lose your grip on yourself. These were the nights that you would break out your blade that you kept hidden in a band aid container in the back of your bathroom drawer and draw lines over yourself. It started with a few small cuts on your ribs or upper arms or thighs. You could easily hide those. But then you couldn’t resist moving to your lower arms. It felt more lucrative for you. Self harm helped your ground yourself, and you saw it as a form of punishment for not being good enough.

Tonight was one of those nights.

You had gotten too deep into your head again and couldn’t stop the thoughts from racing at you at a 1000 miles per hour. You needed them to stop or at least slow down. To do so, you snuck out to the bar in the living room and snagged a bottle of Jack Daniels. It was 11:30PM, so you didn’t really have to sneak, considering everyone was either asleep, on a mission, or doing work elsewhere. What you didn’t know, was that Friday took stock of what was in the bar. So Tony knew that 7, now 8, bottles of his alcohol were missing. He just didn’t know it was you.

You went back to your room and flipped on the bathroom light. Opening your drawer, you found your blade. You slowly slid down the wall, blade in one hand and the now open bottle of Jack in the other. Taking a very large swig, you felt the liquor burn your throat on the way down. Sighing, you take the blade and drag it across your arm, letting the blood slowly rise up and out.

This went on for another 30 minutes or so. Drink, cut, drink, drink, cut, cut and so on. You were about a ⅓ of the way through the bottle of Jack Daniels and finally felt yourself getting numb. Numbness felt like asylum for you. Your cuts stung a little bit, but for the most part, you felt numb and slower. You could breathe. You were still crying a bit, but it wasn’t hyperventilating, anxiety induced crying. Just a few slow tears taking their time crawling down your cheeks.

You were so out of it and focused on your breathing that you didn’t hear your door open or your dad whisper out to you. He had been working late in the lab and decided to check on you before he went to bed. He saw that you were more tired than usual lately, so he wanted to make sure you were actually sleeping okay. When he didn’t see you in bed, he saw the bathroom light on and gently walked towards the door. He didn’t hear any noise, so he decided to knock.

“You okay in there, sweetheart?” He heard you kind of fumbling around in there after he spoke.

“Jesus, dad! You gave me a fuckin heart attack! Yes, I’m fine, just... please go.” He knew you weren’t fine. He could tell when you were lying, even without looking at you. There was a few seconds of silence. He couldn’t let this slide, something wasn’t right. He had an awful feeling in his gut.

“Are you decent?”

“What do you mean?” You were confused. Your brain wasn’t really all there. You weren’t shitfaced drunk, but you were pretty loosey-goosey.

“Are you dressed?” You looked down at your arm and thighs where you had at least a dozen or more small lines scattered around your skin. You didn’t really think clearly before responding.

“I mean, yeah. But I don’t want you to come in.” You slurred your words a little bit, but you thought it would go unnoticed by your dad. Unfortunately for you, he heard.

“Too bad. I’m coming in.” You shot up in panic.

Quickly capping the bottle of Jack, you tried to get up and hold the bathroom door closed, but Tony was quicker and stronger. It also didn’t help that you were not only unstable from the alcohol, but you always were a little light headed after self harming. So when you stood up to get the door, you ended up having to lean on the sink for support until Tony came in.

What he saw when he opened the door shattered his heart more than he thought possible.

You were in one of your favorite thinner sweaters and shorts, but you were bleeding. He saw all of the lines and the streaks of blood that came from a few of them, some of them already coagulated. You were leaning against the sink because you couldn’t stand easily. There were bloody tissues on the floor next to one of his bottles of Jack Daniels and a blade. He quickly put all of this together.

“Sweetheart…” He said. You felt more tears coming, but you didn’t want him to see you so weak.

You tried to take a couple steps forward and push him out of your bathroom, but pushing him was like pushing a brick wall. Nothing happened. It didn’t help that your legs were insanely wobbly. As soon as you touched your dad, your legs started to give out.

“Woah! Hey! I gotcha. Let’s just sit you down here.”

Thank god for Tony’s quick reflexes. He caught you and sat you on your bathroom counter while he inspected the cuts.

They varied from thin and not deeper than a paper cut, to two very nasty looking ones on your right thigh. They weren’t gushing blood or anything, but they were big and deep. He was just thankful they weren’t near a vein or else this could have ended deadly. He grabbed one of your washcloths and dampened it.

“This is gonna sting, but I-- we need to put pressure on this until I can get you to Banner.” He warned. Before you could complain in response, he put the washcloth on the bad cuts on your leg. You had to grab his arm because it stung so bad. You kind of liked the pain, but not the circumstance.

“I need you to hold that there, okay honey?” You felt faint. You were overwhelmed, in pain, and really didn’t want to be in this situation right now. But you nodded your head anyways. Tony took one of your hands and put it on the washcloth, pushing down a bit to try to stop the bleeding from getting worse.

“Friday!” Tony yelled, surely waking up some of the team.

“Yes, Mr.Stark?”

“Wake up Banner and tell him to meet me in the lab with his med kit. It’s an emergency.”

“Absolutely, Mr.Stark.”

Before you could fully understand what was going on, Tony gently grabbed the hand that wasn’t holding the washcloth down and wrapped it around his neck while he lifted you up bridal style. As quickly and gingerly as possible, he made his way out of your room and towards the elevator.

When the two of you got out in the hallway, there were a few others gathered around wondering what was going on. They didn’t really understand what was happening until they saw the bloody rag on your leg and how scared Tony looked. Tony didn’t pay attention to them until Steve starts to walk alongside Tony.

“What the heck happened? We just heard you yell for Friday and (Y/N) crying a bit.”

“Later, Rogers. She needs stitches, now. I’m on my way to meet Banner in the lab. I’ll fill everyone in when she is safe.” Steve knew to back off then. Tony was never this freaked out, so that was one indicator. But the he also never used Steve’s name unless it was serious.

Steve helped Tony in the elevator by pressing the button for the floor that the lab was on, and then left, so you two had some privacy. You couldn’t help the tears that were trickling down your face. You felt so stupid and like a huge disappointment. You had your face in your dad’s neck while you tried to get your breathing back to normal.

“I-- I’m sorry, dad. I just… I--” You couldn’t get out much more than that. Even if you could, you had no idea what to say to him. How to explain to him that his daughter is a mess.

“Shh. It’s okay, baby. Bruce is going to fix you up and then we are both going to get some much needed sleep. Alright? Just stay awake with me for a bit longer. Okay?” You knew he was trying to be strong for you, but you could hear a little waiver in his voice as if he was trying to hold back tears. You nod, he leans down and kisses your forehead, and then you dig your face back into his neck.

He just sighs and tries to calm himself. You are going to be okay. You are going to be safe. He loves you too damn much to see this get any worse.

Brick Club ‘17 – Chapters 1.1.1-1.1.5; I admire a man with chutzpah.

(...jfc, if you had any idea how much trouble this post gave me. *glares at tumblr* I HAD TO REWRITE IT FOUR TIMES and between times 3 and 4, Kaspersky randomly decided that Firefox shouldn’t load any websites. ANY. NOT EVEN GOOGLE. ARGH. But I’m OK, now, and I’m going to retype this again for the (HOPEFULLY) last time.)

The first thing I have to say about these chapters is that I absolutely adore the Bishop. Anyone who follows me knows that Courfeyrac is my absolute favorite of favorites in all of Les Mis, but Feuilly and the Bishop tie for second place. And this is the reason why: The Bishop is a classic representation of what it is to have chutzpah.

Merriam-Webster defines chutzpah as “supreme self-confidence: nerve, gall” and that’s part of it, and is what it’s come to mean in English usage, but that’s not the whole truth. I’m going to borrow something now from an article on chabad.org by Tzvi Freeman:

So what is chutzpah? It’s a kind of acosmic attitude, as though there’s nothing really there stopping you from doing whatever you want.

That’s why chutzpah can be real bad and chutzpah can be real good. Bad chutzpah is something we all know about. But good chutzpah is one of the first rules of behavior cited in the Shulchan Aruch—the classic codification of Jewish Law. Citing the words of the Mishnah, “Be fierce as a leopard,” the code tells us that this means that when you go about doing all those Jewish things that Jews do, you shouldn’t feel the slightest embarrassment before those who ridicule you. You don’t have to call them names, you don’t have to react at all. Just keep on doing what you have to do as though they don’t exist. […]

So, to be a good Jew, you need two opposites: A sense of shame that prevents you from acting with chutzpah to do the wrong thing, and a sense of chutzpah that prevents you from being ashamed to do the right thing.

The Bishop is very clearly not a Jew, but this is such a Jewish thing that he does: unashamedly doing the right thing, in spite of ridicule, standing up to people who look down at him from on high and not only assuming equality, but daring to encourage them to use his behavior as an example do better. He is who he is, he knows what is the right thing to do, and he’s just going to go about his business and do it, no matter what you think. That is chutzpah, and that is my Bishop.

And now, below the cut, I will give you some of my more specific thoughts on each chapter. ^_^

I’m not going to go over each of these chapters in much detail, because, to be honest, it’s too much and I could probably spend 20 pages babbling, and I don’t think anyone wants that. So, I’ve tried to stick with picking one (or two) thing(s) in each chapter to talk about to avoid making this ridiculously long.

1.1.1

The thing that always strikes me out of this chapter is that I desperately want the story of Myriel before he became a priest. Because that transformation from well-born, well-to-do, charming and yet somewhat debauched man to the Bishop we know in Digne? That fascinates me. In there lies a story just as complex and interesting as Valjean’s own and I want to hear it. I want to know more about this man who gleefully looked Napoleon in the eye and punned at him. I want to know more. I would gladly read another 1200 page novel on him. And that’s honestly my biggest problem with Les Mis in a nutshell. Even the minor, minor background characters are so richly created that I want to know more about them. It’s a problem.

[Side note: I forgot how frustrating Hapgood’s handling of puns is. She misses just about every one. Or maybe the way she translated them just doesn’t translate into modern English, but, either way, it’s super frustrating. I can FEEL the lead-up to the pun (Hugo sets them all up pretty obviously, especially for the Bishop’s puns) and then where the joke would be it just… falls flat. :P I found myself rifling through my FMA and my Donougher to see if they were handled any better there, and @pilferingapples, I gotta say, I’m tempted to flop over to Donougher every time there’s a pun because she did a MUCH better job with the few I checked. Did you find the same?]

Anyway, the other thing I need to mention about 1.1.1 is this: Myriel is “advanced in years and living in a very retired manner.” His sister, Baptistine, who is 10 YEARS HIS JUNIOR, is “an elderly spinster????” And let’s not forget this hot mess:

Mademoiselle Baptistine was a long, pale, thin, gentle creature; she realized the ideal expressed by the word “respectable”; for it seems that a woman must needs be a mother in order to be venerable. She had never been pretty; her whole life, which had been nothing but a succession of holy deeds, had finally conferred upon her a sort of pallor and transparency; and as she advanced in years she had acquired what may be called the beauty of goodness. What had been leanness in her youth had become transparency in her maturity; and this diaphaneity allowed the angel to be seen. She was a soul rather than a virgin. Her person seemed made of a shadow; there was hardly sufficient body to provide for sex; a little matter enclosing a light; large eyes forever drooping;— a mere pretext for a soul’s remaining on the earth.

The thing that strikes me about this bit on the household expenses is how absolutely clearly Hugo saw that society had to be improved from the bottom up. I mean, just LOOK at some of these stuff! Education of the poor, education of women, straight up money to just give to the poor, women, and orphans, proper nutrition for the sick, prison reform, returning the wage earner to families whose wage earners were in debtor’s prison. I mean, LOOK AT THAT. Can you imagine how much it would improve the life of the working class if we had bishops across the world doing this? Taking government money and applying it where it will actually do the most good? Hugo had some revolutionary ideas; that’s fact. But, the idea that even the poorest among us, even those who have committed crimes, deserve mercy and a basic living wage? That’s an idea that’s still revolutionary TODAY. And it makes me angry… and sad. We should be doing better. We NEED to do better.

Good gravy, the bit about the donkey. XD CHUTZPAH, AGAIN. See? This is why I love the Bishop. ^_^

Anyway, another thing that struck me in this chapter was how the Bishop teaches mostly by examples and models. We literally just had a huge class discussion in my doctoral program about that the other day. A good example, or a good model, is worth more than any amount of polished or wordy language. It’s yet another case of a picture being worth 1000 words. Hugo, via the Bishop, being ahead of his time, yet again.

I am NOT getting into the capital punishment discussion. I’m just not up for that tonight. :P

So, instead, here’s a discussion of mishandled puns and translation fails.

Madame Magloire liked to call him Your Grace [Votre Grandeur]. One day he rose from his arm-chair, and went to his library in search of a book. This book was on one of the upper shelves. As the bishop was rather short of stature, he could not reach it. "Madame Magloire," said he, "fetch me a chair. My greatness [grandeur] does not reach as far as that shelf."

This is honestly one of my favorite puns in the whole book. It’s such a dad joke. ^_^ Unfortunately, in Hapgood’s translation, it falls a little flat. It’s clear what the joke is in French (the play on grandeur) thanks to the [notes], but in English it doesn’t entirely work. The fact that I have to rely on the original French to get the joke leaves me feeling like she could have done a better job on that. So, just for shits and giggles, I checked Donougher to see what she did with it. She seemed to do a better job at translating the pun:

It may not be an exact word-for-word translation, but I feel like it captures the spirit of the pun just a bit better. So, kudos to you, Donougher. Point in your favor.

Here’s the other translation gaffe:

"I am thinking," replied the Bishop, "of a singular remark, which is to be found, I believe, in St. Augustine,—'Place your hopes in the man from whom you do not inherit.'"

vs.

And FMA translates it even differently than that but I think made it sound even more like he’s referencing G-d? When I climb out from under my cat, I’ll double check that, but the point stands--Hapgood’s translation is clearly talking about a person and Donougher’s is talking about G-d. I’m, ironically, more likely to trust Donougher’s translation there just because it sounds much more like something the Bishop would say and because the set-up feels like the lead-in to a pun and Donougher is clearly better at handling those.

Now, that being said, I have no idea which of these interpretations is actually more correct. My French is DEFINITELY not at the level of translating Hugo puns. But for anyone with better French who may wish to take a stab at it...

—Je songe, dit l'évêque, à quelque chose de singulier qui est, je crois, dans saint Augustin: «Mettez votre espérance dans celui auquel on ne succède point.»

It doesn’t LOOK like there’s a pun hiding in that French, but again... not an expert by any stretch. :P

I... actually have nothing to say about this chapter? Other than that I’m picturing this little Bishop running about town, attracting a mini-parade everywhere he goes with little children cavorting around him and it’s the most precious thing. ^____^

OK, one last translation amusement because it’s directly related:

“PARLAIT” IS PRETTY CLEAR, HAPGOOD, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? XD

Although, to be fair, I’m pretty sure she meant the type of “accosted” where like... adults make monster faces and “chase” the little kids around until the kids turn the tables and chase them. And the idea of the Bishop doing that is SUCH a perfect image to close this week’s reading on that I think I’ll forgive it, this once. ^_~

I am standing at my bedroom window, looking down at the 2017 Triumph Tiger 800 XRT parked in my back garden, light rain plinking off its aluminum panniers and top box. A wave of melancholy comes at the thought of the mysterious red dirt embedded in the bike’s nooks and crannies now washing away.

The dirt is unlike any you’ll find in the United Kingdom. It’s clearly from somewhere far away, somewhere warm, somewhere far more interesting than Cardiff. It was one of the first things I spotted when Triumph delivered the bike to my house earlier this morning. Digging into the battered cases I also found a soggy, lone sock in the top box. This bike has been places; it has done exciting things.

It is at my house because I’m supposed to be riding it to EICMA. Every November, I borrow a bike and ride to the Milan-based motorcycle show to see the newest bikes being revealed, as well as put my business card in people’s hands. It would be cheaper, faster, and easier to fly but, you know: motorcycles, man.

It’s become clear, however, that I won’t be going this year. Red tape. I’ve lived in Her Majesty’s United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for nigh 12 years but am still classed as a foreigner. Every two and a half years, I have to renew my visa – a process that involves sending every official document I have, including passport and driving license, to a small town in northeast England. Said stuff was sent months ago, but it has not yet been sent back.

Such is the joy of being an immigrant, man: they can do whatever they want to you. Without my passport I can’t leave the country. But damn it, this bike still deserves an adventure.

2017 Triumph Tiger 800 XRT

A week later, I’m making my way north to Scotland. My frequent riding buddy and occasional cameraman, Cam, and I have decided to ride to the Isle of Skye. An island famed for its mercurial weather, where else would you go with winter coming on?

Cam lives in Dunblane (famously home to tennis champs Andy and Jamie Murray), which is roughly equidistant from Glasgow and Edinburgh. Some 430 miles from TMO headquarters, it’s easily within a day’s ride for a comfy, all-bells-and-whistles machine like the Triumph Tiger 800 XRT (cruise control, heated grips, and heated seat are standard), but I’m in the mood to keep things slow. Using a map from Bikers’ Britain, by Simon Weir, I’m doing my best to avoid motorways and taking two days to get to Dunblane.

It is markedly cold but unseasonably dry. I’ve purchased a Keis V501 premium heated vest and am happily nestled in its warmth – the bike’s heated grips and heated seat both cranked to high.

This is more or less the route I followed on the first day, hopping on at Monmouth, detouring to Triumph’s factory cafe, and spending the night in Burnley – a little west of Hebden Bridge.

This is the second-generation Tiger 800 XRT, rendered obsolete by the third-generation Tiger lineup announced at EICMA (Hence the reason I’ve felt no pressure to write up the experience until several months after the fact). A few months from now, I will get a chance to ride the new Tiger 800, as well as the new Tiger 1200, and discover that third generation models aren’t really all that different from second generation. In the moment, though, I feel I’m riding on the last of a breed and wondering why Triumph would want to change a bike as good as this.

I’m also wondering what’s changed about me. Last time I rode a second-generation Tiger 800 – a little more than two years ago – my response was lukewarm. I described the bike as “disappointing” and couldn’t find much about it that I liked over the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 I owned at the time. Maybe my tastes have changed? Certainly I’m a more confident rider now. And I’m more willing to seek out a bike’s upper rev range. With the Suzuki, there’s little reason to explore above 6,000 rpm – it’s mostly just noise from that point to the 10,000 rpm redline – on the Triumph 800, however, that’s really where the fun starts. Maybe I was riding the Tiger wrong last time.

Another reason I originally disliked the Tiger 800 is that it’s just so ugly.

Whatever the case, things now feel right. The bike’s 800cc triple puts out a respectable 94 horsepower, and delivery of that power is so sublime that I’m feeling foolish for having bought the more powerful but also more expensive and much heavier Tiger Explorer XRX. A late start means I don’t make it to the Peak District until early winter sunset has turned the sky a dirty orange. Roads are relatively quiet this time of year but soon I’m battling against commuters making their way home for the day. I give in and take main roads to be able to get to my hotel in time for a late dinner.

The next morning, I’m on the road at sunrise. Which is to say, I intend to be on the road at sunrise. I don’t actually get moving until a full hour or so later. This is frustrating; the days are short at this time of year, especially as you push north. In early November, the sun sets around 4 pm in Scotland, with darkness beginning to creep in as early as 2 pm. You don’t want to be wasting daylight.

Perhaps I wouldn’t have wanted to be out any earlier, though. There are patches of ice on the sides of the road as I make my way through Yorkshire Dales National Park. Hitting these roads “late” has given the sun time to melt away the worst of it. The scenery is incredible and this is clearly the time of year to visit – no tourists.

I really wish I had taken a few pictures. But, as I say, it is cold. I am cocooned in the warmth of heated gear and disinclined to stop. I want to fuss with the heated vest as little as possible. It’s a useful bit of kit, but Sweet Baby Jesus, is it a colossal pain in the ass.

The Keis V501 is nice to have in cold weather but it is also, as the Welsh like to say, a massive ball ache.

The controller’s wires aren’t very long, so, in order to turn it on/set it I have to open my jacket. To unzip my jacket, I have to take off my Klim Adventure gloves, which I’m wearing with liners. To be able to look down at the controller, I have to flip up the lid of my Schuberth C3 Pro. Meanwhile, to operate the controller the bike has to be on. So, every single time I want to set off, the process starts with me straddling a running bike – jacket open, helmet face flipped up, and gloves stuffed between the bike’s windscreen and dash. I set the controller to medium because the heated vest’s instructions say not use it on high (THEN WHY THE HELL DID YOU MAKE IT AN OPTION, KEIS????), then zip up my jacket. I pull my neck buff up over my face, lower the front of the helmet, then carefully – making sure not to drop the gloves, else I be forced to unplug the heated vest, get off the bike, and do this all over again – put on the liners, then the gloves. Frustrating. Pain. In. The. Ass.

By lunch I’m in Lake District National Park, making good enough time I could probably make it through most of southern Scotland before dark. “Could probably” – were it not for my need to run up and down Kirkstone Pass, a narrow, winding stretch that connects the Ullswater and Rothay valleys on the eastern side of the park.

The elevation of the pass is just shy of 1,500 feet, the road is wet, and the Tiger 800’s external temperature readout says it’s 3ºC (37.4ºF). That readout is optimistic, so it’s more than likely only just above freezing. But the sun is out and the road abandoned. I push the bike as hard as I dare through the corners over and over and over, up and down the pass. Even with loaded 35-liter panniers and a 35-liter topbox the bike is surprisingly nimble, and I lose track of time.

I jump on the motorway just before sunset, cruise control locked at 85 mph as I cross the Scottish border. I arrive at Cam’s house a few hours later in pitch dark – just in time to say goodnight to his children before they are are sent off to bed. We open a few bottles of beer and tuck into takeaway curries, discussing the various bikes revealed at EICMA. Cam’s wife, Tracy, manages to feign interest for a while but eventually leaves us on our own.

The next morning I’m up before sunrise, before anyone else. After showering and organizing my kit I head down to the kitchen. Tracy had set out pastries the night before. I make a cup of tea and enjoy a danish or three, watching the slow morning light reveal a back yard completely covered in frost. Cam’s house is warm and modern, and quite large by British standards. It feels American to me, which is a good thing. Knowledge of the welcoming family of five that occupies the house makes it feel even warmer and I feel like Peter in that 1980s Folgers ad.

The frost is still there a few hours later when Cam and I finally gear up and hit the road. The Tiger 800’s temperature gauge reads 1º C and we ride gingerly through his neighborhood, which has not been salted. To add warmth, I’ve taken to wearing my Dainese D-Crust Plus jacket and pants. I feel a little like Randy in A Christmas Story (“I can’t put my arms down!“), and the heated vest palaver is now even more a pain in the ass, but I’m at least comfortable.

Half an hour into the ride, Cam’s swearing over the intercom (we both have Schuberth C3 Pro helmets, and are each using the somewhat glitchy Sena SC10U system to communicate while riding).

“Gah,” he exclaims in his lightly Glaswegian burr. “I’m boilin’!”

This always happens when we ride together. A Texas guy and a Scottish guy. I come close to freezing to death while he melts. Other than our thermal incompatibility, however, Cam’s a good riding buddy. I’ve mentioned before the importance of choosing people you can tolerate for long stretches of time when traveling by bike. Cam’s that guy.

I do my best not to complain about the cold because the day is gorgeous. I had been expecting pure Scottish misery but instead the air is crisp, the sky blue. And there are no tourists.

Are you picking up a theme here? The United Kingdom is roughly the size of Oregon in area (I say “roughly;” Oregon is bigger than the United Kingdom by more than 5,000 square kilometers, which is about the size of Puerto Rico), while being home to an estimated 67 million people. That means that there are, on average, 271 people filling up every square kilometer. Whereas in Oregon there are just 39 souls occupying the same amount of space.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom plays host to some 37 million visitors each year. That’s equivalent to the population of Canada. Most of those visitors come in the summer, when the 67 million people who live here are inclined to take vacations. The two-lane roads that serve an area of beauty like the Scottish Highlands – where we’re riding now – become scenic parking lots.

To see it now in the early winter, relatively empty and more or less as God made it, kicks me in the chest. It’s worth the numb fingers. The beauty feels surreal, to the extent you almost feel as if you’re being taunted. Each time we come around a bend or through a pass to yet another sweeping vista I’ll shout, “Fuck you, Scotland! Fuck you for being so gorgeous,” and Cam bursts into laughter.

Scotland is, of course, pretty far north. The country’s southern border sits more or less on the 55th parallel, which geography nerds will know is north of every US state save Alaska – it is a line that runs above all of Canada’s major cities. Travel four hours north of that line and you reach the Scottish town of Fort William. At this time of year especially, Scotland feels like it’s on the top of the world and Fort William feels like the last reasonably sized town on earth; there be monsters beyond.

It serves as the obvious choice for lunch. It’s Armistice Day and the town is bustling with people who have come in to either see the parade or do a bit of shopping, or both. We pick a middling pub on the main road offering the traditional British fare of foodstuffs served exceedingly hot and dripping with cheese to mask absence of flavor or nutritional value.

We take our time – too much, in fact. Checking his mapping app, Cam suddenly realizes it will take an hour and 15 minutes for us to get from Fort William to Mallaig, where we’re scheduled to catch the one ferry of the day to Skye. It’s 2:30 pm, the boat sails at 4:30, and our tickets insist we be there half an hour before departure. Work in the time needed to walk back to the bikes and for me to go through the whole heated vest routine, and we should have already left.

Cam takes care of the bill and I start walking back to the bikes, gearing up as much as possible en route. When I get to the bikes I dig into my pants pocket and… the Triumph’s key isn’t there.

I’m wearing my Hideout Hybrid leather riding pants beneath the D-Crust waterproof trousers, so getting at the hip pocket is a little tricky. I dig my hand fully inside to feel around – nope, nothing there. I check the other hip pocket. Nothing. Cam arrives and I’m swearing.

“Perhaps it slipped down the trouser leg of your waterproofs,” he says. “Might be in your boot or something.”

I slap at my thigh. Not feeling anything, I go back to checking my pockets. No key in the waterproof jacket’s breast pocket. No key in the right external pocket of my Hideout Touring jacket. No key in the left external pocket. No key in the right internal pocket. No key in the left internal pocket. No key in the right pocket of the heated vest. No key in the left pocket. No key in the breast pocket of my mid-layer shirt. I check them all again, several times, swearing more and more profusely.

“And it’s definitely not slipped down into your waterproof trousers?” asks Cam.

“Well, if it did, it will have fallen out the leg as I was walking,” I say, jogging back toward the pub. “Let’s retrace our steps.”

I scour the ground. Cam runs to the pub, checks there, then makes his way back. We meet halfway and start checking with nearby businesses, asking if anyone’s handed in a key. This is a small town, so the shop attendants are unnecessarily inquisitive.

ME: “Excuse me, has anyone turned in a lost key here?” ATTENDANT: “A key? What sort of a key?” ME: “To a motorbike. I’ve lost the key to my bike.” ATTENDANT: “Oh, dear. What sort of a bike is it?” ME: “Uh… it’s a Triumph.” ATTENDANT: “Oh, aye. What’s the key look like?” ME: “Well, uhm, you know, like a car key – metal bit and a black plastic bit that you hold on to. There’s a T on it, for ‘Triumph.'” ATTENDANT: “I see. Nay. We’ve not had anyone hand in any keys today. Have you looked in all your pockets?”

After checking the shops, I retrace my steps again, walking slowly this time, paying close attention to the ground. My mind is spinning on thoughts of what happens now. I’m not worried about missing the ferry but how to explain this to Triumph: “Uhm, hi guys. I’ve lost the key to the Tiger 800 XRT. You’re going to need to come get it. It’s at the top of the world. All my stuff is locked in the panniers, so if you could get here quickly, that’d be great…”

Back to the bikes, Cam again suggests I check the legs of my waterproof trousers. I look at him, ready to snap.

“OK, fine! Here’s what I’m going to do, you nagging son of a bitch,” I say. “I’m going to strip down to my bare ass in this parking lot and show you that there is no key on my person, which is what I have told you several times.”

No, that’s not at all what I say; I’m just thinking it. The words that actually come out of my mouth are simply: “Well, maybe you’re right. I’ll take them off, so I can check thoroughly.”

Which is a fortunate thing to have said, because you’ve already guessed what happens, right? The key plops to the ground as soon as I unzip the leg of my waterproofs; it’s been stuck in the top of my boot this whole time. And we now have less than an hour to get to Mallaig.

In the movie version of my life, the scene would now shift to the placid shores of Loch Eilt, a quiet lake in the middle of nowhere, along the north side of which runs the A380 – the road from Fort William to Mallaig. Picture yourself there now. It’s quiet and bewitching; the sky is beginning the long, beautiful, shimmering process of winter sunset. Everything is good and right with the world. Then…

Turns out motorbikes are loaded onto the ferry first. Had we not arrived in time to get aboard before everyone else we would not have been allowed to board at all.

That’s the sound of the Tiger 800 screaming as I push it to its max speed, tipping into corners so hard that some faraway back-of-the-mind thought imagines the panniers touching down. Cam is nowhere to be seen, but I figure that if I can get there before final check-in I can drag my feet long enough for him to show up. A few miles short of Mallaig, though, I get the yips and become convinced there’s a cop lurking just around the corner.

There isn’t, but it’s OK. I’ve made up enough time. Cam catches up just as we get to Mallaig and we check in with exactly one minute to spare. A few minutes later we’re directed to ride onto the ship. The ride to Skye is short and we never lose sight of land – indeed, it feels more as if we’re crossing a big lake than venturing into the cold north Atlantic Ocean, but I feel about as far from home as I can ever remember. It’s a hell of a long way from Houston, y’all.

As we cross, night begins to rush in. Our hotel is only a few miles from where the ferry docks and we arrive with the very dying of the light. Picked completely at random because Google Maps had identified it as being on our route, the hotel turns out to be one of the best I’ve stayed at in a very long time. Cam and I are put into a cottage that looks out on the sea. Walking to the water’s edge, I look up and see little moving windows of dark, star-filled sky – breaks in the cloud cover.

We eat dinner in the hotel’s rustic restaurant/pub, which is packed with the warmth of people. Every seat is full. Some are hotel guests, but many are locals. Cam and I find a spot next to the fire and I scratch the ears of a dog that’s excitedly trying to angle himself to capitalize on anyone’s dropped food. With each consecutive pint of Guinness the desire to stay for several more days grows stronger. I mean, hey, I’ve got my laptop; the hotel’s got (subpar) WiFi; I could work from here…

When we eventually call it a night and stumble out into the pitch black my head spins with that incredible mix of fresh air and booze. This is so much better than going to EICMA.

A light snow falls over night, and turns to squalls of freezing rain by sunrise. They come and go within a few minutes of each other, interspersed with brilliant, glowing sunshine. Because it’s a Sunday, breakfast isn’t being served until 8:30 am, which means we won’t be on the road until at least 9:30 (remember the sparsity of daylight at this time of year), but we don’t care. This place is beautiful.

The smug look of a man who is somehow able to claim that doing all this is his job.

We walk around a little before breakfast, taking pictures and making internal plans to bring our respective loved ones back here. I can’t wait to show Jenn this place some day. Breakfast is hearty and delicious – you wouldn’t have expected any less – and we manage to roll away from the hotel shortly after 10. It’s Sunday and we’ll be heading our separate ways today. Cam has a real job, so has only had a weekend to spare. And, well, technically I have a job, too – which I’m better able to do from my office at home than a hotel room.

The goal is to spend the daylight making our way south, then split up once we hit Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. The sense, then, is that they belittle God’s chosen capital and temple--and by extension his sovereignty over world affairs--and trust instead in their own symbols of power. As St. Cyril says:

In the next sentence, the Greek version seems to vocalize the Hebrew text a bit differently from the Rabbinic version. Instead of "Picked as head of the nations, the house of Israel came to them,” it has “They picked heads of the nations, and they themselves entered. O house of Israel . . . .” One sees Israel (or its leaders) as specially chosen over other nations; the other refers to leaders of other nations around them. Either way, the prophet tells them to compare and see if there’s any natural reason to think one nation is better or more secure than another. St. Cyril also highlights their ingratitude, after God gave them the land and victory over their neighbors.

The Hebrew text mentions Calneh, which was a Syrian city notably conquered by the Assyrians. Our standard Greek edition reads the consonants as "all of you," leaving "from there" vaguely without a referent; but the commentators’ Antiochene Greek text agrees with the Rabbinic vocalization. The inhabitants of Hamath were some of those conquered peoples settled in Israel after the Assyrian conquest. In Hebrew, v. 2 ends with parallel questions of comparison: “Are they better . . . or is their territory greater . . . ?” The Greek translators seem to have misunderstood the construction by reading the interrogative as the almost identical definite article “the.” This makes the first comparative seem like a superlative and leaves “if” without a verb. The resulting overall point is the same, however; if the Israelites are trusting in their own strength as a nation, they cannot hope to escape a similar fate. As Theodore summarizes, this is because they chose idolatrous Samaria over the temple on Mt. Zion; and even worse, they sought to emulate the pagan nations.

The next section accentuates their feeling of careless security by describing in some detail their practice of feasting. The Hebrew pairing “push away . . . bring near” uses a somewhat rare verb, which the Greek translator may have tried to guess from its context. The result is a complementary sense--they are trying to avoid an evil day, but really they are approaching it. As vocalized in the Rabbinic text, the thing they pull close is also difficult--it could mean the act of sitting, or perhaps a seat of some kind. It connects with the start of v. 4, but its precise meaning is unclear. The Greek version reads it with a different vocalization as "sabbath" and interprets "sabbath of violence" as "false sabbaths." Perhaps the sense would be "sabbath" as indicating a feast-day, and "false" because its extravagance overwhelms the intended solemnity.

In what follows, we have one of the clearest depictions of the Levantine marzeah, a forerunner of the Greco-Roman symposium. Its notable features include:

upper class male participants

distinctive reclining furniture

banqueting with meat and wine

music

perfumes

storytelling

specific divine and royal patrons

association with funerals (see Jer 16:5-9) and ancestor cults

It is difficult to understand how the different Hebrew and Greek readings arose in v. 5b:

Heb: "like David they devised for themselves musical instruments"

Gk: "they reckoned as permanent and not as fleeting"

Theodore and Theodoret make much of the Greek version, understanding that they use sabbaths to indulge, thinking such practices can go on forever, with no thought for the pending judgment. Chrysostom also observes from this passage that even under the Old Covenant the prophet could instruct the Israelites that sensual pleasures were fleeting.

Another significant divergence appears in v. 7b:

Heb: "and the banqueting of those who hang down will end"

Gk: "and the neighing of horses will end from Ephraim"

The term rendered here as “banqueting” is where we get the name marzeah; it is rare in the Bible (as is the word that describes their posture), but its cognates are well-known throughout the region. The Greek version obscures the repetition from v. 4, and reference to horses seems out of place in this context (although St. Cyril explains it as a penchant for parading on specially trained horses). The meaning is clear regardless, as St. Cyril summarizes:

The destruction will be comprehensive. Where in 5:3 Amos indicated that a tenth would remain (100/1000, 10/100), now he warns that all ten men in a house will perish. In describing the effort to dispose of the bodies, the Hebrew text has an obscure word that might have to do with burning or anointing the body; but the Greek has "diligently," which may preserve a better reading. There follows a cryptic exchange with someone outside, in which the response is silence, to avoid mentioning the Lord. Theodore explains that the great difficulty of burying the dead and the silence of the empty house is so overwhelming, that they recognize where neglect of the Lord has brought them; Theodoret says their silence is in awe of God's judgment.

The prophet concludes with an analogy involving animals and a return to their false confidence. Just as it would be unnatural for a horse to run on rock, the Israelites have turned justice to anger and righteousness to bitterness. The commentators once again understand judgment and righteousness here with reference to the severity of God's punishment: their evil has brought God to an uncharacteristically emotional response. The language is reminiscent of the Hebrew version of 5:7, and as we have seen elsewhere, it could be understood as describing how Israel has failed to exercise justice and righteousness.

Their false confidence is expressed in the image of horns, which often symbolize strength. But the Greek misses the Hebrew wordplay, where Lo-Debar ("vanity") and Karnaim ("horns") are also place-names in the Syrian territory taken by Jeroboam. In Amos’s time, it would have indicated Israel’s regional supremacy, but soon they will lose everything. Hamath recalls the opening of the chapter, as well as Jeroboam's borders in 4 Kgm 14:23-25.

The oracles section of the book thus concludes with a warning of utter destruction. The people of Israel, particularly the upper classes, are confident in their own political strength and oblivious in their indulgent lifestyle. They have forgotten that God gave them this land, and for their unrepentant sin, he will take them away.
