So after the spoilers for Chap 257 dropped, I saw some tweets clarifying the meaning of the Kanji Sukuna used in the chapter when referring to his mother, and the overall reveals in the chapter got me thinking.
I’m making this post as a way of gathering my thoughts, personal speculations and where I think all of this connects to Sukuna’s character and the information Gege has given us over the years. Nothing I say is by any means new information, but like I said, I’m just collecting my thoughts here. By the way, just a warning, this post contains SPOILERS for the JJK Manga! If you don’t like that, please don’t read this!
Something I’ve noticed is that the theme of “Hunger” and symbolism of “Cooking/Food” is heavily referenced with Sukuna throughout the Manga. Gege in a previous Fanbook has disclosed Sukuna’s favorite Hobby to be “Eating”.
Tumblr media
This theme is again very much ingrained within Sukuna’s cursed techniques and even his Domain Expansion, the “Malevolent Shrine”. With his two main techniques being “Dismantle” and “Cleave” are cutting-type attacks. He is also able to use a Flame-Arrow, and Fire is essential for making Food. The Shrine in his Domain Expansion literally has mouths on all sides, looking eager to chew down anything in-front of them!
Tumblr media
This symbolism also heavily influences Sukuna’s own manner of speech, and the way he speaks to other characters in the series as well. With his post-fight chat with Jogo before his death, Sukuna mentions Jogo lacking the “Hunger” to take control of his desires, preventing him from reaching the heights of Gojo Satoru. Before the Start of their fight in Shinjuku, Sukuna called Gojo a “Nameless Fish on top of his cutting board”, and that he was going to start by “Peeling off the scales”(refering to Gojo’s infinity). There’s also further symbolism that supports this by analyzing the Kanji and meaning of Sukuna’s “Malevolent Shrine” but I’m not very educated on that so I won’t be opening that point here.
What all of this points to is that Eating and Food……is extremely important to Sukuna, to the point that it literally affects him in manners innumerable.
Eating is an instinct, a necessity for the survival of every single living being.
And In the face of extreme Hunger and starvation, even those with the strongest will could lose their Humanity and revert to the basic animalistic side of their existence. (The Heian Period also had a Famine, although I believe the timing to be a bit off, but do with this info as you see fit)
In JJK Chapter 257, it is revealed to us that Sukuna and his Twin were most likely starving in the womb of their starving mother.
On the brink of starvation, Sukuna had to consume his “other self”(his twin), so that he could survive.
Btw, this tweet and this thread gives additional characterisation to Sukuna:

More context (and reactions :P):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Link to original thread: Here
This reveals to us that indeed, Sukuna was born a twin. And as we all know, “Twins” are seen with extreme scrutiny in Jujutsu Society, they’re not well liked. This too in a period where Cursed Spirits and Jujutsu Sorcery was at its peak, it is not far-fetched to assume that his Mother may not have been treated very well by the people in her surroundings, especially as she bore twins.
When Kashimo asks if Sukuna was born the Strongest or if he made himself the Strongest, this is the response Sukuna gave to him:
Tumblr media
When you think about it, how do you think the people around them would have reacted when the woman: who was supposed to birth two twins, gave birth to a single child instead? and that child had consumed his other twin in the womb itself?
No doubt people would’ve been horrified, disgusted and even revulsed. With the woman and her newborn child.
This would’ve led to their further ostracisation in the already very close-minded society. Unable to fend for herself and her newborn child, it must’ve been difficult for Sukuna’s mother to survive. I feel like somewhere along the line, Sukuna was left alone to fend for himself at an extremely young age. To protect himself from both Curses and Society alike.
This is why I believe Sukuna knows what true starvation, weakness and hunger feels like. Both in the emotional and literal sense. He was left without another person caring about him or his well-being, in a cut-throat period where it was “Fight or be killed”.
Powerful curses roamed all across Japan, nowhere was safe. Simply be strong, or you'll die. There's no room for weakness. And initially, a kid!Sukuna was weak, as anyone would be in the beginning when they're just starting out in this world. (and maybe, he didn't have much to eat, leading to long periods of starvation? :') )
I believe it is this debilitating hunger, and feeling of weakness that eventually led to Sukuna’s current Hedonistic mindset.
He’s essentially traumatised by it, and believes that it was his own weakness that led him to experience this sheer starvation. That he deserved to feel this way because he was weak then. Perhaps, the people around him were right, that as long as they have the power and strength to overcome anything, they’re free to do as they please; And there is nothing anyone else could do about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel like the irony here is that Sukuna himself, must’ve been a “weakling” before eventually rising the ranks to become History’s Strongest Sorcerer. This is also why he values Strength so much.
Ultimately, Sukuna has decided that there was nothing more important than being strong enough to fulfill your own desires. And “eating” is one of his most important desires. It’s his favourite thing to do, the one he derives the most pleasure out of. And like an animal, whose main focus is to consume, consume and consume. He too, simply consumes.
Most morals likely have no meaning to him. He doesn’t care who he hurts, what he does, as long as he’s able to get what he wants. And this isn’t limited to eating.
This is why people referring to Sukuna as a “Natural Disaster” is so befitting of him. Because Natural Disasters also don’t care about what or who they’re destroying, they just come and go, wreaking havoc appropriate for their nature and magnitude.
I believe Sukuna himself has said lines similar in nature, when talking to Kashimo:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now I’m not sure how Sukuna perceives or even experiences this “Love”, because I think he has a rather very warped idea of it. I do think that this definition of love is similar to the one that Gojo also understands, but I don’t think he knows what “love” truly is. I’m not sure how I could comment on this, but I do think that Sukuna’s emotionally starved, whether he realises that or not.
Because, like Kashimo himself asked Sukuna “What is the point of dividing your soul into 20 different parts and then traversing across time if you’re satisfied with this?” we do not know the answer to that yet.
But many people have speculated that “Black Box” panels in JJK manga represent a curse (either self-inflicted or put by someone) on the speaker. Like, take a look over here where Sukuna reiterates the same dialogue, except it looks like he’s trying to reassure himself:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This once again shows that Sukuna has only ever strived for himself, in the same hedonistic fashion, to a very very extreme degree. It is possible that he's been lacking something, and he himself does not realise that he’s lacking it. Maybe it was this subconscious feeling, that led to Sukuna agreeing to Kenjaku’s plan of dividing his soul into 20 different parts, and to traverse across time as a Cursed Object.
Sukuna’s an incredibly complex character, and I’m excited to see where this goes. Gege has put extra care in the way he characterizes and depicts Sukuna, and again, I’m really sad that a lot of that characterization gets lost in translation. Still, I’m going to try my best to understand and get the most accurate feel of his character as I possibly can.
If you made it this far, Thank you for reading! And if you would like, please do leave a comment in the tags or replies because I would love to read what other people think of this and just Sukuna in general. I do not see a lot of people doing critical analysis of him, and a lot of his actions are seemingly swept under the rug. I don’t like that, so hopefully this contributes to people focusing more on Sukuna and his character. (/^v^)/ <3

kind of late on this but with the info from the fanbook, my updated take on the whole teru’s parent’s situation is that he had parents that didn’t want him to need them, so he relied on his powers to help him be self sufficient so they’d be proud of him. only it worked too well and they used his self-sufficiency as an excuse to fuck off to who knows where. and he got a huge superiority complex because his powers were the only thing they ever praised about him + are the reason he got treated differently than other kids. and also made terrorists want to recruit him (#justprotagonistthings)
i don’t think he sees any problem with any of this btw like sure he rejects that ideology now but i think he’s like lol well what can ya do! :P he knows its wrong on some level because he never brings it up but also he’s so nonchalant about it that i don’t think he’s touched those feelings with a 10ft pole

What's a delta au btw? I've been scrolling through tvdint fics and i see it pop up sometimes
The Delta AU is one of the many semi-canon AU's for the series! (Semi-canon in the sense that tvdint's mangaka Bonnoki was the one who came up with it, rather than just some fans) It's one of the most popular AU's and one of the most developed ones, aside from Uso
Basically, the gist of it is that every character (with a couple of exceptions) is shifted one role to the left, IE:
The vampires are all Vampire Control Division
The Vampire Control Division are all vampire hunters
The vampire hunters are all vampires
Tumblr media
Draluc is the captain of the VCD and is a dhampir in this AU. He has a wicked good ability to sense vampires, except using his ability gives him terrible migraines. He and the rest of the VCD are investigating a sudden invasion of superior vampires (Ronaldo and the rest of the former hunter characters) in Shin Yoko, and Draluc is eventually tasked with monitoring Ronaldo. He's very overworked and very tired, but is still his usual hedonistic self (and still has John).
Ronaldo is a vampire who is stupidly powerful, and it seems as though absolutely nothing can kill him: not garlic, not crosses, not silver, not sunlight. He is actively looking for a way to die, so that he can resurrect himself and become more "vampire-like" like his brother. He seems a lot more enthusiastic and puppy dog-like in this AU, so far not showing any sort of violent tendencies towards Draluc and actually seems to kind of respect him to an extent
And it basically plays out as a "what if Ronaldo was the one who barged into Draluc's quiet lil life and mooched off him instead?" theoretical. Fanon likes to depict this AU as kind of like a silly slice-of-life office AU, in a sense, but in general a lot of people view Delta as a slightly-to-greatly darker/more serious storyline than the canon tvdint, given Ronaldo's obsession with wanting to die and Draluc's mortality as a dhampir, among other aspects.
There are two 4 page comics about Delta in the official kyuushi fanbooks as well as a handful of little lore droplings from Bonnoki on his twitter and in a couple of his radios on youtube.
A compilation of most of the information about Delta can be found here!

i saw your rant and i agree with you alot.. i am just disappointed. i think the finger isnt a threat anymore like yuuji stated and it just there in original place since sukuna is gone and chose a different path.. i know sorcerers die and move on but like i am upset that we didn't get atleast get an acknowledgement , reminiscing ir a funeral to their beloved sensei friend and comrade in their lives even after using his body ik he said he didnot mind but still- I see we got a reflection from yuuji from his flashback with gojo but man what about the adults including shoko and the other students. BTW KUSAKABE the bum NEEDS TO STFU. What happen to gojo body? ig we will get it answered in his fanbook. To me it is kinda ooc to why they reacting like that and it is ruining my perception of them a little bit like i just want to see the acknowledgement to gojo. Sukuna got a nice conclusion. What do you think change in jujutsu society ? What do you think will happen? they seem happy in those panels and the mission. i wish gojo embraced the future too and wanted to see some growth in him and strengthen his interactions with everyone i see he had something with ichiji but - ig gojo was truly the happiest in his youth that why he stayed in south and he died without regrets. Maybe the anime in certain scenes would do better but ughh. Overall the story has flaws and sure they have nice moments but is it a masterpiece like what people glaze and claim? imo no. Also another question what are your problems with jjk overall and what is your interpretation gojo's character since many people have their interpretations. Alot of people have been saying its narratively beautiful and we do not get the meaning behind the ending, gojo's death and the flashback with gojo and yuuji.
omg my first ask;;,,,
the fact that its known that every sorcerer dies eventually (not even from old age most of the time) is known, but it’s absolutely not right that the one who had the highest and most important contribution to defeating sukuna, we don’t see ANYTHING of. in fact, gege’s just going like “forget him hes not important anymore” yeah like anyones gonna listen. you kill him off after hes taken straight L’s the entire series. hes trying to play him off as “hes all happy and no worries haha” but NO. I Refuse To Accept That. he was supposed to move ON.
also about the yuuta body thing, to me, he sounded like “uhhhh sure buddy, i mean, that won’t happen in the first place anyways so knock yourself out” he clearly wasn’t planning to lose. and he seemed a bit off put by the idea, but he still said okay since whats the point, he’s just a corpse now. it hits him that even when he’s dead, he’s just a weapon. and he was genuinely upset with shokos nonchalance of the idea, like as if he’s saying “you’re just gonna let my corpse be used like that??? no respect.”
anyways, getting sappy for a moment, i wanna see the adults reactions too. because shoko, ijichi and utahime are the only ones left alive now who were very close with him, and for gojo who was always a constant to just be gone?? imagine ijichi sitting in his office getting a call or text message and he thinks its from gojo but its not, and will never be again; and then shoko never bar hopping with gojo ever again, or, utahime never seeing, nor being teased by gojo, ever again. like dang its a little too quiet here….sob
moving on, it is definitely out of character for everyone to act so relaxed or simply not acknowledging what the hell happened with gojo. what about yuuta and the fact he’s gonna live with the notion that he used his sensei’s corpse like a puppet (and didnt win)? What about yuuji who obviously would never want to forget gojo. he was literally both him and yuutas live saviors. it also shows that gojo is gojo and his ‘the strongest’ title does NOT make him for who he is. they need GOJO.
SCREW KUSAKABE. why would you say that in front of YUUJI????
i dont think anything will really change in jujutsu society. gakuganji will take over, and idk make jujutsu society a little better. In the end, nothing changed. Everything is back to square one, and all the sorcerers will die, like a sorcerer. their lives didnt change for the better, or for the worst. but hey this means that yuuji really will kill mahito when he reincarnates.
gojo is like eren, “move forward”. he was, like i said, supposed to move ON. he is supposed to see that the future ahead could be bright and he could be able to change jujutsu society with gakuganji and anyone else. but no. gege decided the worst possible choice to leave him there with his dead friends who, by the way, DONT even understand him either. nobody ever did, not even geto. (seriously, who gives their best friend an existential crisis for the rest of their life because theyre jealous of their power?) buut, sukuna could’ve, theyre both not even seen as humans, because one is not, and the other is just a weapon. theyre both just stepping stools of power if you could defeat them. (sukugo!(&:$;8/!9 stop it gege.)
my main problem with jjk is that its very rushed, right from the very beginning, and straight to the end. none of the characters are even super fleshed out. i couldnt tell you something as simple as gojos favorite color. because we dont know. or other things nobara likes to do besides shop and try out new things. i cant say ANYTHING. its all left in the air, ripe for misinterpretation and misinformation to rot it if it stays open for too long.
my interpretation of gojos character? hoo boy…hohohoh;..,,, so i see him as a very emotionally distant man. he keeps to himself, and doesnt like to let others in, because he thinks “what does it matter? whose going to really care? they wont understand me anyways.” and also because if he shows vulnerability he will get exploited from it, from people who have things against him. just like how kenny sealed gojo. he took advantage of him mentally. he’s a very cocky man and he uses this arrogant facade to hide himself in. he also takes peoples opinions of him to heart. like it genuinely hurts him to hear someone have a low opinion of him, like with ijichi. and he also listens to what people tell him, like with shoko and the wallpaper. he really cares about people, he just cant bring himself to open up at all. also he is just very confident, FOR A GOOD REASON. It tends to reassure people too in battle. Like with yuuji when Gojo got jumped by jogo in season one.
“narratively beautiful” get a load of this guy, whoever says that is just a gege stan. what he wrote in terms of story couldve been amazing if he actually knew how to write. the gojo and yuuji scene, is gege just self inserting into gojo. how could gojo, the oh so arrogant man, just tell someone to forget him? he would be like “if i die, which wont happen, you BETTER NOT forget me or i’ll haunt you…” or something along those lines. it was very out of character, even yuuji acknowledged it. nonsense.
thats all, very long rant awawaaa

what do you think was the reason kanae runs away with nemu in the true route? i love your euphoria analysis and appreciation for kanae's character btw, stay based!
So, actually, the Visual Fanbook offers a bit of insight I'd like to share before I share my own headcanon. Per the Visual Fanbook, not even Kanae herself is sure of why she ran away with Nemu. Perhaps it was a gut feel, perhaps a change of heart deep down, but it's very much left up to player interpretation in a sense, I think!
Bearing that, I do think Kanae had some change of heart somewhere along the line. She may not have been consciously aware of it, but perhaps a sense of seeking normalcy or happiness--the latter of which Nemu has via Keisuke--is what was the catalyst of her running with Nemu. While on the run with Nemu and experiencing life away from the facility, away from her role as "researcher" and "lead of the Paradise Project", and perhaps while muddled inside from her own act of the kind friend to Nemu and Keisuke prior to the death game... I think many feelings were born within Kanae that were unfortunately cut short due to her death.
I want to add that I don't mind Kanae's death narratively speaking, it makes total sense with her character and the overall plotline that she wouldn't survive in the end. But what could life look like for Kanae, or even for Nemu to have not only Keisuke but her dear "Kanae-oneechan", if she had survived after running away with Nemu to reunite the two? I also wonder if her running away has anything to do with her mommy issues--recall that Kanae wasn't raised with love and care. Her parents were particularly focused in on that Paradise Project and Nemu, and so I get the sense Kanae feels neglected and turned out the way she did due to this emotional neglect. She may be intellectually intelligent, but her emotional intelligence lags behind a bit, I think, due to this.
There's so much to chew on with the characters of euphoria, and I'm still deeply thinking on and reflecting with the story all these years later.

Today's translation #445
Go Yuri Go!!!, Yuri!!! on ICE official fanbook, Toyonaga Toshiyuki x Uchiyama Koki conversation
Part 1.
-- First of all, please tell us how do you feel after the last episode.
Uchiyama: In the end, Yuuri and Yurio's life as competitors still continues, and maybe Victor will also go back to competitive skating... So I really want to see much more of them. A lot of people watched the show and it seems we will be able to make a movie, so I'm looking forward to it.
Toyonaga: After the last episode, I took part in the audio commentary for DVD&Blu-rays and events, so I don't feel at all that it ended even now. We had a celebratory after-party, and both, people from Asahi TV and Avex, as well as Kubo-san and Yamamoto Director seemed very enthusiastic, like: "It was fun!" "Let's do it again!". For me, it's a very important anime, I have an emotional attachment to, but I wasn't really feeling the sadness of parting with Yuuri and the others, and now it was decided that we're going to make a movie... Right now, the situation is that it's still an on-going series.
[Notes: Another VA interview! Sometimes, I read the interview I'm translating for the first time as I'm translating it... Had a look at what they talk about in this one and it's just such a pleasant convo between Yuuri and Yurio's VA. There is also interview with Victor's VA in the same book, however, and it's the "to Victor, Makkachin is more important than Yuuri" one...😂 Ehhhh.
Btw, notice how Toyonaga talks here about who had anything to say in the matter of continuation... TV Asahi, Avex, the two main creators.]
