Toon Zelda redesigns! I've never been fond of the Toon Zelda design, and these girls deserve some individuality. Design notes and rambles below the cut :D

(time to turn the proper grammar off i aint capitalizing all this. warning: i am verbose)

first up, tmc zelda!

shes the one most like toon zelda, since i felt like the vibes fit the *most* (though not a lot). also, with her place on the timeline, i could justify a lot of bits, like the wings and the cape

the cape! obvs it comes from the toon zelda base design, but also it involves skyloftian fashion! i take the timeline as a challenge, and i once saw a take somewhere that the skyloftians all wear their family crests (most often birds lol) on their person. zelda here (and link too) do just that, wearing their family crests on little caplets. on the back is, of course the royal crest

i went very cutesy princess for her. tmc has such a *whimsical* vibe that i feel is very. muted? by the fact its stuck with the toon style. so i wanted to put in that vibe here. also her sprites make it look like her skirt is super poofy, so how could i not?

curly hair: i wanted something interesting, and most zeldas have straight hair. so! adds to the cuteness

i didnt draw it so well but she (and link) both have very sleepy expressions. zelda especially just has a sleepy expression in her sprite, its quite adorable.

shes not as decked out as other princesses, cuz i see tmc taking place before the royal family really starts to get *royal* as we see it. shes still of course got a tiara and some embroidery tho.

Tetra! her base design isnt all that changed from the original. her name is a fun hc of mine tho. i think "von Hyrule" sounds better as a surname than just "hyrule". shes not zelda, but shes still a descendant.

I went more oot zelda vibes for her, since she would be closer, temporally, to oot. i also went very warm, since ive never seen the flood as a *warm* endeavor.

shes got the shoulder danglies, as most zeldas have shoulder armor of some kind. the danglies instead of actual armor are supposed to kind of evoke a royal sea captain kind of vibe.

shes ghostly, with a fish-eyed stare. shes been dead and gone for a long time. shes also a bit taller and a few years older than tetra (as of ww). shes just some spectre the king saw in tetra, not at all a close match

tetra, being smaller than princess z, doesnt fit into the clothes. the dress is too big for her (as is in canon gd that skirt is WAY too long for her), the coat is baggy. the role of a princess *literally* does not fit her.

the ribbons! theyre my replacement for the wings, and they represent the wind in the game! since its represented by white lines, the ribbons are a perfect symbolic match. (also, a note, tetras hair is shorter and coarser than princess z's)

i mostly bullshitted the blue panel but the vague idea i gave it was 'a hope for the triforce to give good fortunes to the people' (pictured as dots, mostly behind her arms)

Pirate Queen Tetra

ph! about a year has passed, and tetra has really grown into her own! as well as literally grown!

shes still tetra, pirate and captain, but shes incorporated that royal heritage into her identity: quite literally! she made piecemeal of the original outfit (what was left of it anyway after the fight), and added bits and pieces to her new life.

she also takes full advantage of said heritage to call herself pirate queen. its great for branding. whos gonna say she CANT go by pirate queen?

the seagull feather is from Aryll. only crew member tetra wears a trinket from (who can say no to that ball of sunshine! certainly not tetra)

not many notes. yall can see whats there. (also she still wears her hair in a bun, its just in a low bun (you can almost see it) when she wears her hat)

st zelda!

first note is: shes not a princess! shes an heiress of the company tetra had made and left behind. hence her title of Lady zelda. ("new hyrule" rly just like-- the ending of ww was *literally* that hyrule is dead and thats okay. how did they miss that :sob emoji:) also calling her Lady Zelda fits with the train vibes

shes in a 1880s style bustle dress because 1) i am OBSESSED with bustle dresses. i love them. so much. 2) the more historical vibe works really well with trains! also a lot of the other outfits in the game have late victorian vibes, so shes certainly not out of place.

her hat (and gloves): any proper lady has a hat on when going about town, however, when she gets body snatched, she pulled out her hatpin to use (ineffectively) as a weapon (she IS tetras great-great-granddaughter), causing her to lose her hat *and* hairdo.

shes still got the hatpin in her ghost form, too. she uses it to threaten people for funsies

Ribbons! on the topic of hairdo, her ribbons! visually tying her to tetras design, the ribbons here instead take on the image of train tracks, with her pin (on the left side) evoking a train engine. the pin also makes her look rich and girly. when her hair comes undone, this makes the ribbons all loose, like how the train tracks disappear in game. (the hat also kinda connects her to tetra)

i'm a chronic furry so i turned the isat gang into birds. the earrings are clipped onto the feathers. the hair is a wig. why? uh. uh. uh. good question. also i forgot siffrin's little eyepatch

here's where i explain my choices of bird 👍

mirabelle- canada goose!!!! heavily migratory (as befits the change belief) waterbirds (water is constantly shifting and changing by the seasons)!!! theyre cute!!! theyre pretty!!! theyre fierce when the situation calls for it!!! also idk i feel like the colors just fit for her!!

siffrin: catlike, cute, nocturnal, and undeniably sharp- the barn owl!!! i couldnt NOT make siffrin a nocturnal species with their whole cultural thing being around the stars!! also, owls historically have had a bunch of symbolism placed around them being symbols of death, with some cultures also having them be symbols of victory in battle!!!

isabeau: cockatoo!!!! theyre like if a cockatiel (smallish, kind of wimpy) pokemon-evolved!!! theyve got the big ostentatious head feathers!!! big tough nut-cracking beak!!! heavy duty parrot!! while also being incredibly smart and stylish!!!

odile: great blue heron!!! undeniably graceful and wise looking, yet sharp!!! impressive plumage, but in a more understated way!! truly the embodiment of modern dinosaurs!!

bonnie: zebra finch!!! little but loud!!! big colorful beak and cheek patches!! not as robust as the cockatoo or the goose, but no less enthusiastic!!!

loop: uh. mystery bird? owl??? lets say a weird owl. theyre just the same as normal loop but slightly more birdlike

the symbolism, similarities, and contrast of all the pier scenes involving both edward and oswald truly make me lose my mind

in the first pier scene edward and oswald are facing each other, oz has his back turned to the water. edward means to kill oswald here, and in doing so kills a part of himself, perhaps unknowingly— at least to an extent. oz means no harm to ed here, quite the opposite even. oswald dies this time and edward survives— though he loses a part of himself in the process. the atmosphere is gloomy and we see the scene from far away— it’s all grays and the one subtle beige of the pier. clouds fill the sky and rain crashes into the water.

in the second one they "both" (barring the fact that this isnt actually oswald and is just a hallucination) face the water, oz behind ed. this time edward MEANS to kill both what remains of oswald (in his eyes) and a part of himself. his vision of oswald watches as nothing more than a spectator, he might as well not even be there at all. the lighting here is completely different, as is the framing. this is not a scene about revenge or murder, it is about rebirth. clouds cover the right half of the sky, yet they do not rain, and the sun shines in from the left. in a way i think the clouds passing and revealing the sun kind of symbolizes edwards acceptance for the fact that he DOES care about oswald. hes not hiding from his feelings, even if that means nothing at all anymore— after all, he’s already thrown it all away. birds fly through the air. there is life. oswald stands by the sun, edward by the clouds. edward destroys his past self and his feelings for oswald, represented here by oswalds apparition.

in the third rehashing it is gloomy again. no clouds in the sky- this scene focuses on oswald (who we've seen framed by the clear sky compared to how ed has been framed by the cloudy sky in these scenes. edward intends for this scene to be about rebirth, but we can clearly see that it much closer resembles the one focused on death. again we see the scene from far away, its all greys with the slight beige of the pier. edward has failed and it is once more about death. they both face towards the water, ed behind oswald this time. obviously this is because ed believes he’s going to shoot oz again this time, but its also kind of perfectly symbolic. this time it is oswald killing his old self, his love for ed, and destroying ed in the process— instead of the other way around like the second or first scenes. neither of them are the same after this. though, there is no rain. the hardest part has passed, and while this is emotional, it is not the most they have gone through. this time oswald faces the water and he intends to kill.

NOW. scene 4. they face eachother again. farther from the edge of the pier, neither of them dies here this time, in any sense. the clouds frame ed once more, the clear sky behind oswald. the scene is framed closely, reminiscent of their second pier scene where no one actually dies. it seems that the far away shots signify death, whereas the close ones signify rebirth. while oz faces the water in a technical sense, he doesnt actually— not really. hes facing ed, that much is clear, but he isnt looking out at the water. theyre looking at eachother and nothing else. once more there are colors that aren’t just grey. its nice. again they coexist, this time for good and not just for the brief fleeting moment before death.

i just think that the visuals at play here are truly phenomenal

one thing ABT hellaverse character designs is that a lotta detractors get hung up on the fact theyre not faithful to their stated inspirations but I think more important is we stop and ask ourselves where the fuck thess motifs even came from +If they hold Relevance to the characters. cause a lotta them are so asspulled its actually a good thing methinks that vivienne didn't follow through on them

Besides the pun, what is the link between bees and beelzebub? Beelzebub has historically been known as the lord of the flies, flies and bees are not exactly interchangeable especially their human connotations. bees (and, not to name names but every single redesign of this thing ive seen) bring forth images of highly enforced hierarchy, militaristic discipline, perfectly cut hexagons, limited diet, aka fucking everything that Contradicts the initial premise of Lord Of Gluttony, Drunkard Girl. IS IT AN UNSALVAGEABLE IDEA? No I'm sure you could do something with it. Lean into the restlessness of a buzzing hive, or into honey's consumption by humans, as a delicacy. She could whose honey lures and traps flies, or something (fact that her song is about cotton candy given her whole thing is ludicrous btw). But like i dont see the point in going "Vivienne said she's a bee so I'm literally drawing her as a bee" and calling it a day.

HUSK AND WINGS

We do not question enough why the fuck husk is a winged cat. That just came out of nowhere The real reason is that he had wings back in zootopia for whatever reason, but this is the current day. WHAT DO HIS WINGS SYMBOLIZE? A large part of his character is being trapped under Alastor, and yet birds are a symbol of freedom. The show itself doesn't give a shit but we could. He could have his wings clipped or damaged to externalize how his freedom was stolen and also explain why he doesn't fly. Or it could be one of the only liberties he was allowed to keep , in which case the story should have him flying a lot more. Or any other number of things. TLDR YOU CAN'T JUST PUT HUGE ASS WINGS ON A CAT FURRY WITHOUT MAKING IT MEAN ANYTHING (tbh though anyone else think he shouldve been a kitty manticore instead... would be kinda funny and less convoluted. but whatever)

Smthorother attraction is to represent any attraction type that someone dosnt want to define, attraction that cant be defined, obscureor attraction (cant find a label, little attraction is there, etc.) or otherwise atypical attraction. It can represent a combination of attractions or be a unique attraction type by itself depending on the user.

Smthorother being the words "something or other" shoved together, STOO beng an abriviation for something or other & i just think its funny. Kiwis are derived from how the aplatonic comunity has adopted apples as a symbol as well as how kiwis as a bird are unique, seeing that they're like 2 ft tall & flightless & how kiwis are a unique fruit.

Lil mini edit: this can be expanded apon in any form as long as its in good faith. I think stuff like GaySTOO & AbroSTOO would be funny personally (I think thats how I'm gonna use it lol) but ya, DemiSTOO, STOOspec, LesbainSTOO all thats on the table. I also think just describing myself as AbroKiwi os funny, but to each their own, this is just for extra specificity use it if u want 🤷🏻

I coined this from an aspec sence. im aqp spec & feel like i kind have kinda 2 attraction types that could be considered queerplatonic, but that just dosnt feel fully right cause ik theyre distinct from 1 another, hence the origin of kiwi attraction.

Sharing ideas moment: I always thought Haitham would better fit as a vulture, specially when the old world ones are depicted as good birds in cultures like the Egyptian, Hindu or Persian ones, even when now the vultures are considered ugly and very dangerous. Just the only idea that many people has fear or sees the scribe in a bad way, but then Kaveh comes in and marks the difference (in his own way), to make a curious couple between a vulture and a bird-of-paradise. It just melts my heart <3

the concept itself is cute (danger and beauty) but just a reminder that (since i see it often) al haitham is not connected to vultures in any way. hes iraqi arab and falcons are a big part of arab culture; everything about him is inspired/connected to falcons from his name to his constellation (the og cn name "sky falcon" and not whatever english translation has going on) so yea. no connections to vultures at all

just mentioning it again bc there was some drama about ppl claiming haitham is gay coded bc of (non existent) vulture/greek symbols and completely ignored what actual arabs had to say

apart of the cultural aspect, personally i just think falcon is perfectly fitting for him already. falcons possess extraordinary speed, strength and vision and theyre really intelligent too. so i think falcons are plenty dangerous too to pair cutely with beautiful birds of paradise. looks cute too, seeing the grey, simple looking bird next to that mass of color <3

if i may suggest for my own Devious And Villainous purposes (going "hehhe chicken"), Buff Orpington chicken fulbright? known as the "golden retrievers" of birds, i think his wings would be HUGE but very dense so they give him a big silhouette but he cant fly as well (i think he'd factor it into his commitment to JUSTICE, that he just parkours his way around to chase suspects, he can manage a pretty solid glide id think). hed probably give SUCH good wing hugs though (which i feel like would be the equivalent of the type of hugs where you get picked up and spun around which feels like SUCH a fulbright thing to do)

i did find something neat for blackquill being Bat Hawks, theyre black and white and VERY successful hunters and the name evokes a menacing batman looking bird but they just look like dweebs which i find fitting for him, i cant find much other information on them i just saw them and went :O

bat hawks are part of Accipitridae family along with like. literally every other hawk/eagle/sharp thing EXCEPT. Ospreys and Secretary Birds. they are the two other families, with only one species in each family. floating the idea that athena is an Osprey, since there used to be more members of the genus that have since gone extinct (metis pandion lovensis?), and juvenile ospreys have buff tinges to their feathers which would indicate 1 her youth 2 subtly connect her to the phantoms disguise 3 match her hair more (and also the idea that the stressors caused her feathers to retain their juvenile pattern instead of washing out the buff tint). i also just. really like ospreys.

and then flipside, the secretary bird is a COMPLETELY isolate species, but the name secretary implies someone who will complete tasks out of the limelight, just like the phantom. i have also learned they hunt QUITE a few other birds including particularly chickens.... they also seem to hunt in a really wide variety of methods which reads to me as situational adaptability. this doesnt account for the disguise aspect, but i like parallels :P also just occurred to me, i think most people see them as flightless/gliding since they tend to stick to the ground, and their snake hunting is greatly exaggerated, so i think that could lead to an interesting moment in the UR-1 retrial where, not expecting him to be able to fly, he suddenly takes off unrestrained (and then we know how that goes....). im sorta stuck on how theyd disguise their wings though. maybe like athena, their wings kept their youth coloring (all white) so they can dye the feathers? idk

im not a bird person so i dont actually rlly know a lot of bird options so these were just what i found immediately, though if u already had ideas for these characters id love to hear them!! im just literally never not thinking about chicken fulbright or The Phantom In General ^^;

OMG THESE IDEAS ARE SO COOL AND THOROUGH,, i actually haven't thought much at all about most of the characters past AJ (INCLUDING UENDO IF U'D BELIEVE IT) (and i've thought exatly zero (0) thoughts abt the phantom) but ill chip in where i do have ideas !! other than that this is just gonna be me gushing over your ideas lmao

Fullbright: girl you had me at "golden retriever of birds". thats so good. the only con i see is the immediate thought most people have when they think of "chicken" being cowardice. Another option I immediately considered is just a golden eagle. Eagles (at least in the US) are big symbols of freedom and righteousness. I also like the idea of an eagle him and a hawk Blackquill,, something something territorial birds something something (though that's admittedly based of the phantom's actions while impersonating fullbright, and not fullbright himself). Anyways I think I prefer the buff orpington chicken more ! fits his whole justice thing less but deffffff fits his personality more. btw i LOVE the way you've characterized his flying habits

Blackquill: I had a couple ideas for him already, one actually being the bat hawk too !!! He's 100% a hawk to me so it's kinda just a matter of which one. Another possibility is the black-and-white eagle-hawk,, which looks pretty much how you imagine it but also stupid lmao (IT HAS BLACKQUILL'S BLACK EYES) (it's like blackquill with a really bad haircut). This one has wings that are black on the outside and white on the inside, which is veryyyyyy blackquill, aesthetically at least. OKOK AND ONE more idea for blackquill is making him the same bird as taka! which according to the wiki is a northern goshawk or a eurasian sparrowhawk. This idea is SO CUTE TO ME,, like he found his kin yknow,, but it doesn't look as good on him aesthetically as the others imo

STROKES OF GENIUS. that paragraph was so fucking fun to read and I LOVED THE IDEAS. secretary birds are also just really sick birds, too. You raise a great question with how they would disguise their wings though... cuz not only color, but shape and size (especially for a bird with such a large wingspan with a distinct shape (though tbh this would be true of any bird)). There's always the option of just letting suspension of disbelief take over (just like with how the canon phantom can take on so many perfect disguises, even down to body shape and height). I saw your recent post talking about how in order to do that so well, you imagine the phantom is built slim. Perhaps, (and this might be too brutal haha), many of his feathers are plucked to slim down the wingspan and allow for prosthetics. Eh idk, I'd def need to spend more time thinking about it to come up with something better.

these r what i would call like my base level of ingame edits (i dont reallyyyyyy count my cas screenshots as edits unless i spend an actual amount of time actually working on them rather than my usual blur+chromatic aberration+sharpen combo) theres usually very little? or like no actual basis in the characters "canon" or lore like its just done to make them look nice. right. or like its fun lighting practise for me really. theyre usually pretty simple in execution like in the two examples there its just plain yellow background for sunny and the neon cross for vin so i have to put a little extra oomf into it because the backgrounds are like not super detailed so theres less of an "interest" factor from that so the sims themselves have to look REALLY good to make up for it. the ones i end up happy with though usually look really dynamic so it balances out

so these are more sort of abstract edits to me bc they have a basis in the oc lore or themes or whatever and most of my ocs have at least one or two visual markers (in the examples lucari or even just ari specifically gets a fair amount of celestial/sky imagery, i handled the colours here a bit sloppily but its meant to be blue and purple which are ari and luca's text colours, heiya's emphasis being on her muscles and scars and the clouded solar eclipse, redacted gets a lot of water/reflective surfaces/birds/rainbow flares?? and also lightning but that isnt being used in this specific one and sunny gets a fair amount of fire/smoke stuff as well as emphasis on primary colours like his more blue toned edits r usually in his darker stages of his life while warmer yellows means more positive stuff, red usually is just for uhhh violence oriented stuff) and like none of these are Actually happening. right. redacted isnt actually ever in that position with that era of hair in the water with the birds and sunny was set on fire at 13 not as an adult and they certainly never had a portrait of his family like that. but its symbolic, it means Something even if you as the viewer doesnt know it yet 😅 or ever aha

OKAY LOL I PRESSED POST BY ACCIDENT LOL but these are my full lore edits or something likr theyre totally rooted in the background of the ocs. like these are scenes from their lives for real. obviously i fiddle with lighting angle composition a tinyyyy bit to make for a more pleasing or dynamic image at the end but if my ocs all got dedicated like. movies or shows these would be ripped straight from the scene. i take creative liberties with some stuff but in essence these could be story posts (like the 3rd example with idris/redacted is literally in the story itself in one of the posts) the difference is usually amount of images in the post and orientation of said image/s. to me an edit stops being an edit when it has more than likeeeeee 4 images and then i will usually keep that bulk all in landscape or maybe one as portrait for emphasis. edits will be 4 or less and mostly in portrait because i want the less images to take up more room on the dash. the backgrounds for these will usually be way more complex like ill build a mini set or use existing sets for each one. i just think that ingame edits have a lot more capability than you might think (u dont have to go into blender for every little thing promise 🙌🏼) its just like. u can do a lot with this game i swearrrrrr just treat it like an art medium. im serious

ALSO the song almost always is sooo relevant to the edit i swear its not enough to sound good. i have to be unwell about it as well and it has to make sense with what im showing u
