I also finished Doran's (Sundown) designs a while back but never posted them either because they're not very clean; but now I've been thinking a lot about his lore and wanted to ramble a bit more!!! Info under the cut

Doran "Sundown" (or just Sundown as he is usually known) is an Ifrit, a race originally from the desert of Zer'Ja, in the New World. Born from a family of a wealthy merchant family, his life was pretty much already done for him. Even though he was never very social, he did have a good discipline for manual crafts and other forms of art, so as long as he was working on his family's business, he was guaranteed to be able to make a living out of it. His two older brothers were the ones who would inherit most of the business afterall, and they, along with their parents, were the face of the business, and most of his formative years were spent learning how to make money, learn the inner workings of how to take care of a business, and dealing with art pieces that fell into their possesion.

Still, he was never truly satisfied with that kind of life, which was never fully understood by his family, something that made him keep those feelings for himself even more. In his early-to-mid 20's he began to struggle with all of this, not being able to be fulfilled with his current life when he had all the reasons to be. He had a job, a good family, and enough money to live comfortably for the rest of his life if he wanted to, but he felt.. off with that. He longed for something else: making things with his own hands, living on his own, being left alone to do his own thing. Alone. On the wilds.

He buried that feeling (along with other.. gender-related ones) for years, until it reached a breaking point for him. He took everything he could carry that he considered to be useful, changed clothes, told NO ONE about it, and just...left. He didn't have a plan, just walk. He Will figure it out on the way where he was going.

Sundown spent almost five years traveling on his own. Had to learn how to hunt, how to make traps and fire, and how to survive on his own but it felt so??? Right??? Carving wood, hunting animals, making a shelter, it wasn't a "job" but It was definitely what he felt his life should be about.

He would end up setting on the most exterior part of Rey's kingdom (another OC Guy I'll talk about in the future), a frozen tundra mostly inhabited by Deathwalkers and Primordials, but a place he fit right in. Built a cabin, got a dog, and started trading with a nearby village.

Now, he just mostly lives on his own (with his dog), working on his land as a shepherd in the most literal cowboy sense, and carving wood in his free time. Good shit

just pondering the discourse ive been seeing on my dash + the years of discourse i witnessed on twitter but i really do think its important to be a solas lover who can understand why some people hate him so much. and i do think a lot of the posts i see criticizing him are clearly done in pure bad faith and their interpretations are often influenced by that bad faith to the point that they are just not even correct (in my onion) but you also have to remember. much of his appeal is only available to a TINY part of the playerbase; that being people who are willing to play as a female lavellan. or anyone who has a PC and the knowledge to mod to get rid of his race/gender locked romance. and yes of course his friendship can be compelling but compelling enough to want him to be a main character in the next game? compelling enough to want the game to be NAMED AFTER HIM (formerly)???? like literally think of a character in da:i that you are absolutely indifferent to, couldnt care less about, just isnt your cup of tea for whatever reason. for me this is blackwall sorry to use him as an example hes fine hes just not my thing. if da4 was ALL ABOUT BLACKWALL ID BE SO FUCKING PISSED??????????? LIKE CAN YOU IMAGINE??????????????? i genuinely consider myself so blessed that solas does resonate with me so much, and that playing as a female lavellan was something i was able to enjoy and identify with, because if not....... id be a hater too

I had a conversation with a friend about how the different races in D&D probably have a completely different views on gender and probably don't even have binary sexes either.

Like, Plasmoids probably don't understand humanoid gender at all cuz they're just goo and all spawn from the big ooze in the Abyss. How is something like that supposed to understand that humanoids act and look different due to something intangible for them?

Lizardfolk could potentially have all female groups like the Whiptail lizards. Would they even form concepts of gender in their own cultures if they are all clones like that????

Even a more mammalian example, what are Dwarves concept of femininity compared to Elves? Do Elves see any kind of facial hair as more of a weird condition than a gendered thing? Do Dwarves view facial hair more as a indicator of age than gender? Do both get confused when they see the sexual dimorphism in humans for the first time???

Also, yes I know gender is much much more than biology but I would love to know how the cultures of D&D races evolve around gender within and without their societies cuz it's so different than our own.

All this post is saying is that animals are not infallible judges of character and some of them make really stupid vibe checks and that people should try not to take it personally. Sometimes a dog will vibe check a man and the dog will be right and you should listen. but sometimes the dog will vibe check someone for no good reason. sometimes dogs have wack judgement. sometimes dogs have biases influenced by their owners or previous owners. like. there are Racist Dogs. its not the dogs fault, but that doesnt make the bias theyve developed less real, or less potentially hurtful. i dont think we need to like, Cancel Dogs Bc Sometimes Ppl Can Train Them To Be Racist, but we do need to stop perpetuating the idea that a dog's judgement of someone is infallible. theyre not responsible for it and its not their fault its developed, theyre just dogs, they didnt choose it, but that doesnt mean theyre RIGHT lmao. i think its important to stress this for many reasons but in regard to that last post specifically, if youve ever been vibe checked as a gender you arent by a judgy dog its literally not your fault. might not even be the owners fault. not the dogs fault cos like. its a fucking dog. you do kinda have to be the bigger person in that scenario cos the other person is. I'm a little tired of men on the apps acting like having a gender expression preference is in any way similar to having a 'racial preference'? I can understand it to an extent because a lot of assholes have used being masc4masc as an excuse to be racist, fatphobic, transphobic, and above all else homophobic lol but the problem with those guys wasn't that they had a preference for masculine men... it was that they treated everyone else like garbage and thought they were BETTER for having the preference and made that very clear. Idk sometimes I feel like we are 1 or 2 degrees away from literally just going back to "gay men are gay because they are misogynistic"
