There's the saying of “being mean is easy. Being nice is hard” and I get really saddened by the whole "they're so nice! They must just be so innocent." when no. It's a CHOICE. Especially for most adults like Polites, even more as he's still a warrior in Epic.

To act like he's too "naive" to simply not know of such horrible things is honestly astounding to me.

As a character as well, it'd hit home harder if fandom has Polites be this guy who has been by Odysseus' side in many of these battles and STILL have hope. "We've been through similar shit. If I can hope that things will get better, so can you." Showing how it IS possible.

Yes, it's true that in Epic, it's about “learning ruthlessness” but that to me, is mostly because Odysseus is dealing with immortals and monsters. They don't live by mortal rules so therefore mercy isn't going to work.

Also if this goes along with the Odyssey more, the whole "Joy like that of a sailor", moment TO ME, feels like "hey, you don't have to struggle anymore. You are kissing the sweet earth of your homeland (in Penelope's arms. who wouldn't start crying in joy from being hugged by her?) and so you can breathe. You are cold and covered in brine but it's a start."

I hope that's where Jay is going too 🥺 How Odysseus has had to become so hardened for so long but now he can be soft again because he's with those who KNOW him and love him.

sometimes the way the epic fandom treats polites really rubs me the wrong way. like, sure, they are the fans of a musical and it's a common phenomena in musical fandoms (or in any fandom actually) that any character with a softer side is represented as a baby that never did anything wrong. bro, polites survived the trojan war. he was at siege there for the whole 10 years of it. he can be a good-natured and kind soul, but surely he did witness a lot of horrible stuff

I am 100% with you on this. To be fair, we only got Polites in like,, one and a half song so there's not really much to work with. However, he has definitely been bottled down to an "innocent baby" (as fandoms, as you said, have a habit of doing). He has been in a ten year long war. It is very much possible that he just kept on hoping and had a positive outlook on life even after the war. (If you look at the cut song Your Light, he very much says "i know the world's not always pretty"). Holding on to hope and trying to go through the struggles of life with a happy mindset is a thing people do, so when any similar character gets treatment like that, it really doesn't sit right with me.

NOW. It's important to note that Polites is mentioned only once in the odyssey iirc, so what we got in epic is entirely unique to the musical. We have no idea what he was like in the odyssey (except that he led the scouting group to circe's home and was one of odysseus' most trusted and dearest friends). I feel like he's something of a personification of the concept of optimism, hope and amiability. Still, representing him as an "innocent baby" or whatever takes away from his thematical role in epic. I've seen him portrayed as very passive, naive, and his agency is very often taken away in favor of serving that bright, hopeful, "greet the world with open arms" image of him people have in mind. (something like madeline miller's patroclus).

People need to understand that optimistic, kind people can still go through horrible stuff. And good people can do bad things! Unfortunately, any character that shows even a sliver of kindness, compassion and empathy seems to get that treatment.

I am proud of my asexuality because is a part of me!! is something that affects the way i see people and for obvious reasons my relationships and trying to hide it or change will only lead me to be miserable

through my whole life i experienced things differently when it comes to attraction to people, i never seemed to develope crushes on my classmates or celebrities, cause i just.. didint care? to a point my mom got worried and straight up asked me if i was gay because my lack of interest "was not normal"

when i was in my first long term relationship my lack of sexual needs and desire was a huge issue that would lead on fights very often and my former partner to feel unloved as i would prefer just to cuddle or watch a movie. This back and foward with him and constant fights made me feel like efectibly was somethign wrong with me and transformed sex more of a chore than something im supposed to enjoy or want

thing which developed a huge sexual trauma on me but also helped me to understand that, that relationship would never work because i just could never deliver what he wanted and his needs were different than mine. we were just hurting each other

i also got sent to doctors by my mother as to find what was "wrong" with me as my lack of sexual needs was not "normal" for her

there is so much i had to deal and endure my whole adulthood because of this, because i experience thigns differently

now. more big and more mature i can confidently say, im asexual. I celebrate my asexuality because There was nothign wrong with me and the way i experience thigns is just different

i celebrate it and i mention it as an important part of myself because i know i will not be able to be in a fullfiling relationship if my partner is not aware of this fact or not willing to accept it

i celebrate it because doctors didnt found anything wrong in me and i just love differently. and asuming that lack of sexual attraction is part of an illness hurts people who might be dealing with this feelings!

I celebrate because in a hyper sexualized world i dont really seem to fit in, AND THAT IS OKAY, because the way i live my life should not affect others and they way they live theirs

i do feel romantic attraction! i can fall in love and love other person!! but i just cant deliver what most people would be expect in a relationship and that is okay!

And finally i celebrate to ensure online that the people who experience love differently just like me are not alone in this journey and will be okay :3. just a lil bit of emotional support for who might feel broken due what others say to them

had a realization that's making me insane but we as a fandom weren't angry enough abt sunshades

also, this is entirely related, so I'm dragging them here too, but the voltron fandom was not angry enough abt Shiro's sudden gayness

now, the similarities are these:

both were retconed gay during the second half of their series

both were given their "endgame" romantic interest at the very end of their series (yes I know TOA exists now, but it came out in 2016, 2 years after BOO)

both fandoms became really weird abt those who dared to have shipped the character with a girl (Nico was canonically gay for longer than Shiro was in their respective media, so it's very rare to see those old ships, but they exist all the same)

both fandoms were all too happy to start extreme shipping them with their last minute love interest (the voltron fandom latched to Adam so hard it makes the sunshades seem tame, Curtis way less so)

the differences:

the voltron fandom should've been angry bc Shiro hadn't had any buildup as a gay character (whatever shippers saw notwithstanding), the problem being that if the show had gone with it's original Shallura plans (I saw this in like a commentary on how the show got made), they would've had to make someone else queer (for bait reasons), and they couldn't make hunk queer cause they did the whole thign with Shay, and Pidge was the youngest so like,,, they couldn't make keith queer cause he's the only "white" character and therefore has to be the token straight protag, and if they made Lance queer without makign klance happen I think something would've exploded.

so last minute gay shiro, burry your gays trope included! but oh, don't worry, he gets married to this random two seconds background character in the end!!

the PJO fandom, on the other hand, went through more than half of HOO watching Nico and Jason be like thatTM and then just, acepted will? the same ppl who tell you valdangelo wouldn't happen cause they had only one interaction? those ppl??

what, they just took the 1.5 bit at the VERY END of BOO and ran with it? I know lack of representation was a lot worse back then, but if that thing came out now I don't trust y'all to call it out like you should

like, I remember spending that whole scene being like "who the fuck's this guy" cause I didn't register background characters unless they were plot relevant, and nothing about that scene was all that romantic either

IMPORTANT QUESTION

so i've been trying to remedy how i've written one of the long fics that i've put out, which is dream girl. I realized that the way the current chapters function doesn't work well with the way that I had set up the storyline and I honestly wrote them so long ago, that i'm not sure how well they would fit in with what I have envisioned for the story that I have now

so pick an option. I wil still be writing the fic, and the premise will still be the same, but I just basically have to set it up again. I know some people feel strongly about deleting and archiving (see: me saying I wanted to archive roommates and getting very lovingly threatening messages from the hoes that made me giggle) so pick one

anyways, i'm sorry this is so annoying 😭 moots know that i've been sitting on this idea for a while and I kind of wrote it when I wasn't in the best writing space and honestly writing it now just kind of icks me out cuz I feel like it's not cohesive as other thigns i've written. (mind you, the story is basically the same, but just built up better if I rewrite it. all the same dynamics and ideas will still b ethere).
