Sad extinct mourning dove visited my Bird Buddy yesterday 😢 Can't believe they went extinct in 2020 and they are all gone now and not actually congregating on the stump under the bird feeder pecking around and going woo woo woo from the trees

#mourning dove #okay real talk though #they are very numerous BUT have been on a slight decline since the 60s #they are not currently a threatened species or anything but mourning doves like most other birds do face real ecological issues #lead poisoning is especially prominent because they are ground foragers and mourning doves can be legally hunted for sport in some areas #there are certain bird species in the US like common grackles and wood thrushes that are listed as 'common birds in steep decline'#these are birds that may be numerous now but are rapidly dwindling in number #this can be studied as a general indicator of the health of their habitat #get to know your local birds and what you can do to help them!#and remember the passenger pigeon was one of our most numerous birds once...
