The Quest for the Grail The symbol of the Grail has occupied a place in the imagination since awareness of it first dawned in the European Middle Ages, and it continues to exert a fascination upon all who come within its sphere of influence. As a sacred #vessel, the #grail has strong links with #Celtic myth, with the hermetic vessel and the Philosophers’ Stone of #alchemy. Cup stone or jewel, however it is depicted, the grail has remained a symbol of spiritual wholeness leading to union with the #divine, which has been the aim of seekers after #truth in every land and every century. It is a symbol ‘whose home is properly in the uncharted country of the #soul’. -Circles of infinity- The most basic concept of the human imagination is the circle. It figures in the earliest cave paintings, and is carved on the standing stones where man worshipped from the earliest of times. In the Middle Ages, the sky was seen as a dome in which the constellations moved, circling earth and, in the #zodiac acting upon the fates of those below. Credit to @theritmanlibrary : Work of the day: ‘Bruyt Christi’ from Joris, ‘’t Wonderboeck’, 1554 David Joris (1501-1556) started out as an #Anabaptist, i.e. someone opposed to infant baptism, as he and many others felt that baptism should be a conscious and mature decision. Later he evolved into a prophet with his own following, who preached #spiritual rebirth. Inevitably he was hated and persecuted by the authorities. ‘’t Wonderboeck’ is regarded as his chief work. Joris himself provided the original designs for this work, which were first printed as #woodcuts, in later editions as engravings. This image is also about spiritual #rebirth. The winged and crowned female figure, brandishing a sword in her left hand and a heart in her right hand, is the Invisible Church or Bride of #Christ (the medallion she wears on her chest appropriately features the pelican, a symbol of Christ). One was the fabulous #Phoenix. The phoenix is possibly derived from the #Egyptian #sacred #Bennu bird, a fish heron that according to legend was the first living creature that settled on the first hill to arise from the waters. From very early times this #mythological bird had symbolized #life on earth and life after #death. When the phoenix had lived five hundred years or more people said it would make for it self a secret nest of rare spices. In the heat of the sun, fanned by the wings of the #bird, the nest would burst into flames. The phoenix was reduced to #ashes, but from these ashes it would arise, young again, ready to begin the same pattern of life, death, and #rebirth.
