❝ Boredom can be a problem, but I’ve taken it as an opportunity rather than a drawback, and thrown myself into archaeological research. Long distance, of course, but with even with the obsolete holographic technology they have at Stormcage (so archaic it almost counts as an archaeological project in its own right) it’s honestly almost like being on site watching the work being done. ❞ ( PROSE: River of Time )
While Mels Zucker had had a deep appreciation for History ( though not for her history teacher ) it wasn´t until her third regeneration into River Song that she considered a career in Archaeology. It appealed to her for many reasons, she had a natural instinct to investigate, but in a more symbolic way she also felt that in her heart that she was lacking roots, history of her own.
Once she left the sister´s of the infinite schism ( TV: LKH ) River sought out the prestigious Luna University and despite not meeting the entry requirements she managed to impress the head of the Classics & Antiquities Department into allowing her to study. Though initially very fond of her, Professor Artrem Candy would soon come to regret taking her under his wing. Candy, who had previously worked alongside Professor Bernice Summerfield, harboured a very negative attitude towards the Doctor, something that came up frequently in his lectures. As a result he & River frequently clashed over this. She also had a very well balanced social and academic life at Luna, something that irked her fellow student Jemima Still. ( AUDIO: Time in a Bottle ) Jemima was incredibly jealous of River´s popularity amongst peers and lecturers alike and often quarrelled with her. Despite these obstacles, River excelled at her studies in all other aspects.
By the time she had completed her undergraduate she had developed an interest in a relatively new branch of study, Primordial Archaeology, the study of societies that began before time, or just after the big bang. To her annoyance, her rival, Jemima Still also chose to pursue higher studies in the same subject. Both River and Jemima got along fairly well with their Professor Kuyili Acharya, who would pass away while on an expedition approximately 8 years after they both graduated.
During this time, River had been kidnapped once more by the silence, ´murdered´ the Doctor and been incarcerated in the StormCage Containment Facility after a very quick, very private trial. She published several hundred papers during this time and a handful of books, and though Storm Cage would later deny it, attended several digs and headed expeditions during this time. In a career where some took their entire life to accomplish what she had, River was the natural choice to succeed her old Professor and had in fact given several guest lectures at Luna through the years. But Artrem Candy remained the head of the department, and his opinions of her had not swayed over. To River´s utter disappointment, her old rival Jemima Still was offered the position instead, though upon meeting up with Jemima again later, she would feign indifference to the appointment.
All was not lost, she would soon have tenure at the Sorbonne in the 31st Century instead, where she stayed for many years in many different timelines. ( AUDIO: The Sonomancer. ) Her tenure here is one marked with controversy, while her work on the ruins of Razbahan ( TV: TOA ) was largely applauded, citing the rapid expansion of Razbahan from several small chieftains to a vast city state in under 20 years and it´s subsequent brutal fall, as the work of the weeping Angels, her theories on the Liperian system and the involvement of the Discordia ( AUDIO: TDORS VOL 4 ) was met with immense scrutiny. Particularly so because both her old rival Jemima and Jemima´s husband Melak mysteriously vanished during an expedition that she was known to be part of. Whispers followed her, questioning her mysterious murder trial. Some were convinced she´d murdered the Stills as well. Despite this, she was finally offered Jemima´s old position at Luna, though she would later find out the appointment had been ´gently suggested´ by the college board as her presence generated unusually high interest for the department. Unbeknown to many, the adventure with the Discordia had left her deeply scarred, she refused to take on research assistants that weren´t robots for a very long time afterwards.
The faculty on the other hand, she took less than no time to befriend and work closely alongside. she was particularly fond of Maritime Archaeology expert Dr Michael Themba and Paleoethnobotanist Annie-Lee Belrose with whom she worked closely with on a shared expedition into the sunken remains of a primordial alien spacecraft that had crashed in Kilwa, Earth in the 9th Century.
Occasionally she was known to branch out of her own discipline, if the circumstances called for it ( the Ruby´s Curse, Anteria XVI Cordobane, ect )
After a time the rumours that had plagued her before died down. When Artrem Candy ( or his clone? there were rumours ) passed away, she was thoroughly surprised to find that she had been his choice to succeed him as the head of the department.
Under her direction the Department of Classics & Antiquities flourished, at least up until Manhattan happened. The loss of her parents took more or a toll on her than she let and her grief began to effect her work, she became increasingly erratic, frequently didn´t turn up to her own lectures, clashed with the board and other lecturers on campus. Eventually, she realised she needed time away and left on sabbatical, roaming the universe for a time aimlessly before settling in early 20th Century Earth to write.
Unfortunately, she ended up entangled with the self proclaimed rulers of the universe ( AUDIO: TDORS VOL 1. ) She emerged, shaken further by the events of that adventure, but her published work on the Sporeships would be all anyone could talk about. Always one to bounce back from an ordeal, River quickly took advantage of her fame, she would head a large number of expeditions in the following years. Unfortunately, the last one to the Library would cost her her life.
But not everything ends. Not always. As River Allegro, she only further cemented her place as one of the greatest Archaeological minds the universe had seen, her reign as the Head of department saw the development of new surveying and dig technology using nanobots, which she introduced into the early 25th century. Her book on the interconnections between Primordial Civilisations also proved to be a hit, though controversial amongst some of older colleagues who were loathe to such a fresh take. She stayed at Luna for some time, but sadly that too started to take it´s toll, her colleagues did not have the same augmented lifespan as she and one by one they passed away around her. She would eventually give up her place and leave Luna, working as a guest lecturer in between digs instead.

Avatar characters falling and realizing they're in love with you
ft. jake sully, tsu'tey, tonowari, lo'ak, neteyam, tsireya, neytiri, ao'nung
Tumblr media
⤷ Jake Sully
Jake would spend as much time as he can with you. Tutoring him, telling each other stories, just sitting next to each other, eating together - doesn't matter. He would fall in love with you quickly, because you are just amazing! Once a time he had fight with Tsu'tey, Tsu'tey hit Jake badly in his head so Jake fell on ground, his head was spinning and he just couldn't stand up. And right at the moment when Tsu'tey wanted to finished the fight by punching Jake once more you jump right in front of Jake. You were furious and growling. Tsu'tey stopped and his friends took him away. Jake still couldn't see well because of his spinnig head but he saw exactly what you did and how you protected him. That was the moment when he realized he's in love with you.
⤷ Tsu'tey
Tsu'tey would tease you A LOT. Play fights, which always ends with him winning. It would take him time to fall in love with you. You first have to earn his trust. He realized he's in love with you at the moment were you win one of your fights. You two were playing fights/training like you usually do, but this time it was very heavy fight/training. You both are very stubborn so no ones wanted to give up. He attacked you, but you knew him, you knew what he will do so you surprised him by your secret move which made him fell on the ground with you on top of him. He was on his stomach and you held his right arms so he cannot move. You get of him and start smiling like crazy. He saw the smile on your face and promised himself that he's going to be the only one who's gonna make you smile like this.
⤷ Tonowari
Tonowari is a strong leader with lots of experiences and you were just a young woman. He was teaching you how to free drive and how to ride the ilu. You had so much fun but Tonowari didn't seemed so pleasured by your actions. But you just wave it off. But really deep inside Tonowari felt warm and fuzzy. Earning his full trust would take some time. He always had his eyes on you just to make sure you're safe. He would fall in love and didn't even know when it happened. But he realized it when you both where in the ocean swimming on ilu's. He watched you so many time and he cannot stop looking. You looked like a goddess. The way your hair waved behind you, the way your body looked, the way you smiled, the way you rode your ilu - you were hypnotizing to him.
⤷ Lo'ak
Lo'ak would be very confused at first. He wasn't sure if you want make fun of him like many other or you really wanted to be his friend. But when he realized you want to be his friend he was very happy. You get along very well and have become inseparable over time. He fell in love with you immediately. But he realized when you stood up for him. Some guys were picking on him again and you had enough of them and of Lo'ak getting into trouble. When you showed up, start yelling at them and showed them that you're not afraid to fight them they back off. And they weren't so brave after all so they just walked away. You turn to look at him, ou still looked very angry so Lo'ak thought you are now mad at him, but what surprised him was that you hugged him. For once in his life he felt loved and accepted.
⤷ Neteyam
Neteyam would at first look like he hates you but the true was that he was just protecting you. He's a confident guy, but you really got him off track. He fell in love fairly quickly. But realizing would took him a while. It was a day like every other, that's what Neteyam thought. He heard a yelling from afar so he decided to follow the yelling just in case it's his younger brother in trouble again. But when he got there it was worse. He saw you and another na'vi fighting on the ground. He also saw a scratch on you bottom lip and some other smaller wounds on your face. He separated you from the other na'vi and took you some place safe. He took care of your wounds and promised himself that he's gonna protect forever. That was he time when he realized he's in love with you.
⤷ Tsireya
You two were friends but Tsireya was always in love with you. She just fell in love with you immediately. It was love at first sight. She wanted to be with you every second. She was very kind to you and you two usually spend most of the time in the ocean together. Your common favourite activity to do was racing on your ilu's. You both were very good at it so why not. You had your common track which usually no one is on, but this time yes. You were racing and saw a kid in front of you. Your ilu got scared so it got under water and you weren't thinking so you jump off it and over the kid. you floated to the surface to catch a breath and the first thing you saw was Tsireya laughing. It was quiet funny so you started laughing too. Tsireya loved your laugh and that was the time when she realized she's in love with you.
⤷ Ao'nung
Ao'nung would tease you all the time. Because he thought it was very cute when you wrinkled your nose when he nudged your nose or when you twitched your ear as he poked your ear. Ao'nung after some time realized that he's in love with you. He realized when you stood up for him. He was arguing with his father about what he did to Lo'ak, you heard it and you knew that you should talk to his father like this, but something just told you so. You told his father that Ao'nung for sure didn't mean to hurt Lo'ak or something. Tonowari wasn't pleased about it much but he gave Ao'nung smaller punishment. Ao'nung was really surprised that you stood up for him like this and it made him happy and warm inside. He started to look at you more in his free time and he realized he loves you more than he thought.
⤷ Neytiri
Neytiri always find you very interesting and amazing. She always watched you when you did even the simplest things. She spend time with you as well. She fell in love like normally, not quickly not slowly. Racing on ikrans or hunting with you is her favourite thing to do. She realized when she saw you tutoring children. She saw how peacefully you looked and how the kids were amazed by you. It was like you were a goddess to those kids. She also saw kindness in your eyes and she found your voice unusually calming. I mean you were always her safe place and she always found your voice fascinating but this time it was different. She for the first time in her life felt warm, fuzzy and so relaxed inside. She realized that you bring her that feeling and that you are her true love.
Thinking about other character from Avatar that you didn't saw here? Let me know, my requests are open now!

Summary: Aonung is nothing but sweet towards you, till one day he isn't.
Note: This is short but angsty and also I think I should've made the ending different but idk.
He doesn't even remember why he yelled at you because there's nothing you could do that would anger him. But it happened because that tear-stained face and those pinned-backed ears will forever be etched into his memories. This day will forever be in the back of his head labeled as the moment he broke your heart.
Now he is just reminiscing over what just happened but a harsh shove to his shoulder makes it hard. Loak is running after you after delivering the harsh shove and a few curses. Neteyam is far behind him but instead of shoving past Aonung, he confronts him, "Why would you say that to the woman you are betrothed to?". Aonung hangs his head in shame like a child being scolded he isn't aware of Neteyams departure or his sisters. So he is left alone on shore aching to talk to the woman he loves.
~before~
His duties the day prior were not to Toniwaris standards, Aonung was scolded and punished that morning before training began. Maybe if it wasn't for the Sully's needing assistance he would've done better so this is their fault. Aonung was in a bad mood all day ignoring your advances to talk to him and even shielding away from your hidden touches. Aonung didn't want to act this way towards you, it's improper to disregard the woman you are courting. But the annoyance from being scolded and punished lingered heavily. After tense ilu lessons next were breathing exercises, where everyone sat beside each other in a circle and was coached.
It was going smoothly for the most part, with a few chuckles and giggles from around the circle, also some chit-chat. Aonungs mood did not go unnoticed by anyone though. You tap Aonungs knee hearing a grunt come from him signaling you to speak, "What is wrong yawne?". He does not reply instead he makes a demonstration on the proper way to breathe. Your mind is focused on Aonung and how you can help him so you try again, "Did I do something wrong?" you say in a whisper touching his knee once more. The annoyed growl that Aonung produces stops all the conversation and all eyes turn toward him. "Can you do anything right?", Loak and Neteyam visibly straighten up at his words, "Hey man lay off of-" you cut Loak off with a raise of your hand. Aonung continues his proclamation, "I mean seriously you sit here poking and prodding at me when you have so much to learn. You're so obviously behind that it's pathetic y/n. Maybe it is time I start looking for a more suitable mate" he says finishing with a huff.
Everyone around him gasps except you, you're too heartbroken to even consider gasping. No. Instead, tears roll down your face uncontrollably as you stand, "I agree" you walk away, yet somehow you start running all the same.
~back to present~
He knows he must apologize and make things right, cause maybe he still has a chance to be with you forever. So he sprints as fast as his legs can carry him the sand getting kicked behind him trying to slow him down. He skids to a stop seeing you kicking your feet at the water below you where you sit. You know he's there, you can sense his presence from miles away because of the love you carry for him. Even though you know Aonung is there you speak no words of acknowledgment to him. So he speaks first moving his body to sit next to yours.
"I didn't mean what I said" he speaks looking at your face apologetically.
"I know," you say watching your feet in the water below you.
"I'm sorry".
"I know".
He feels his heart crack with every syllable that leaves your lips, somehow even through this pain you are facing, you are still the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. You put your hand out right where the space is still not looking at him. Aonung places his hand right on top of yours looking down at the water similar to yours.
"I hurt you didn't I?" Aonung says already knowing the answer.
"You did," you say with a sniffle.
Aonung nods at this feeling his heart shatter even more than before, "I'll fix this. I'll do anything for you. You are all I want yawne". You lean your head on his chest exhaling as you hear his heartbeat, "You'll fix this" you repeated to him in reply.
He nods his head in agreement putting his arms around your torso, "I will".

hello! <3 can i please request a neteyam x metkayina!reader oneshot where reader is apprehensive about choosing a mate, she knows everyone expect her to choose asap but prefers the idea of being friends with the person first (having a hard time trusting people easily/opening up). one day, after realizing her feelings for neteyam, she talks to him about this and he says something like “i’d always wait for you”. i’m so sorry if this is too specific, i have a thing for the concept of patient love/slowburn.
(also your writing is so beautiful, i’m in love with everything you post and always look forward for your works.)
TAKE YOUR TIME !
Tumblr media
neteyam x metkayina! reader.
a/n — yo this took me forever to finish like i STRUGGLED IM SO SORRY 😭😭 / but SLOWBURNS >>> THEYRE JUST TOO GOOD MAN / also tysm nonnie giving you big smooches
! characters are aged up a few years for sake of plot
When the Sully's arrived to awa'atlu, Tsireya practically begged you to help her and her brother teach them your clan's ways. So you agreed, and like her, took a quick liking to one of the brothers.
You slowly grew closer to Neteyam, spending more and more time that started out with helping him breathe correctly, to how to ride his ilu, to eventually just being with him because you enjoyed his presence.
The two of you were currently sitting on the sand underneath a tree, his back to you as he sat in front of you, you re-braiding his hair. "He's just so- ugh! I just don't get why he is so obsessed with making my siblings feel so unwelcome." Neteyam complained, hissing when you pulled too hard.
"For eywa's sake, Neteyam. If I hear you complain about Ao'nung one more time, I'm going to rip my own eardrums out," You sighed, tsking when his hand grabbed your wrist from tugging hard. "Don't be such a baby, you asked me to redo your braids."
Opening his mouth to complain again, Kiri came in, interrupting you two. "Hey Y/n, I think your parents are looking for you."
Silently thanking eywa, Neteyam grinned, shaking his hair out. Kiri looked at her brother in amusement, breaking out into laughter. "You look so stupid, with your hair half done."
"Whatever, I'm going to mom to ask her to finish it for me. Find me once you're down, yeah?" He looked to you, softly rubbing your shoulder as a farewell.
"I will," you assured him, waving bye to his sister as well.
You entered your own marui, greeting your parents. "Oel ngati kameie."
Your parents nodded, gesturing you to come closer. "Daughter, we have something very important to address."
You sat down across from them, wearing a confused look.
"As you know, you're getting older," you nodded slowly, still confused. "Soon enough, you will need to find a mate. We talked to Ruto's parents, and we believe you two would make a fine match."
You shook your head in disagreement. "Father, I barely know Ruto. I've talked to him only once."
"Yes, but he is the son of one of our best hunter's in the clan. He would provide well for you."
"Please," you begged, looking to your mother for help. "Let me choose someone on my own."
Your parents shared a look, sighing as they turned to you. "Fine, we'll let you choose your own mate. But make it quick. We'll be waiting, and if you can't find someone, we'll talk to Ruto's parents about our agreement again."
You left the marui without another word.
Keeping your promise, you still went to the Sully family's marui, clearly shaken. Of course, the idea of being mated was something you thought about frequently, but the pressure of finding one soon so you wouldn't be set up with a stranger was all too much.
Collecting yourself, you called out to the family, Tuk immediately running up to you. "Y/n!" She giggled happily as you picked her up, hugging her close.
"Hi Tuktuk," you chuckled, eyes wandering to her hand, small fingers grasping a band of beads. She reached out to you, offering them. "What's this?"
"I made it for you!" You let her put it on your wrist, and thanked her, carrying her with you as you made your way towards Neteyam and his mother, who was just about finished with his hair.
"Hi y/n." Neytiri greeted, finishing up on her son's last braid. Upon hearing your name, Neteyam quickly looked up, smiling at the sight of you.
"Y/n!" He happily chirped, his eyes wandering towards your wrist. The bead pattern on your bracelet was matching to the one on his necklace, and you both shared a grin at the realization.
Tuk grinned proudly when the both of you shared a look at your matching jewelry, and jumped from your arms to her mothers embrace.
Getting up, Neteyam waved to his mother. "I'll be back before eclipse."
Nodding towards her son, and then you, the two of you made your way out the marui, walking along the shore.
"So, what did your parents want?"
Your smile faded at the mention of your parents. "They want me to pick a mate soon. They're so excited that they've already chosen someone."
"What? Who?" Neteyam panicked, eyes boring into yours.
"Ruto," you glumly replied. "I convinced them to give me some time though. To pick someone I want, not something that's set up. But I really don't have much time."
"Ruto?" he scoffed in disapproval. "He's got the personality of a rock," he joked, smiling when you faintly laughed. "My dads talked to me about the same thing. I just don't really know everyone on the island all that well, you know?"
"I'm sure you'll find someone," you comforted, a small wave crashing before your feet. "There's many beautiful metkayina women here. Sungia is one of the best healers I've seen. Ikla has a beautiful voice. Ezo is also a great dancer-"
"Easy there," Neteyam cut you off, slapping a hand over your mouth to shut up. Licking his palm, he pulled away, wiping his hand on your arm. "Ew! You're like Lo'ak when you do that."
"Maybe next time you shouldn't put your hand on my mouth, then." You laughed. "I was just saying, there's plenty of wonderful girls here. The men, whoever..."
"Don't fret. We'll find you a big, strong, hunter with a personality so you don't end up with Ruto the rock." He teased, lazily wrapping his arm around you and pulling your hair lightly, making you smack him in the stomach.
"Stop messing with my hair, you skxawng!"
Tuk and Neytiri watched the two of you from the marui, silently hoping the two of you would come to your senses soon.
The next few days went by, and you found yourself laying on Tsireya, complaining. "Eywa hates me!" You groaned, glaring up at the girl when she laughed at your declaration. "It isn't funny, Reya."
"It's a little funny, admit it."
"No it's not! My parents are going to force me to mate with this weird guy if I don't find anyone! I just don't get it, Eywa practically handed you Lo'ak, you have nothing to worry about. All the boys on this island are boring or like your brother."
Eyes widening at the dig at Ao'nung, Tsireya didn't scold you for it. "I mean, I'm not saying you're wrong," she softly threaded her hands through your hair as you let out another sigh. "But there has to be someone. What about Neteyam?"
You shot up like a rocket, rapidly shaking your head. "Absolutely not. No. I couldn't even- no. We're just friends."
"You are a terrible liar." Tsireya blankly stated, blinking at you.
"I'm not lying!"
"Have you seen the way you two look at each other? It's like you're in love. No one who is just friends looks at someone like that."
"Look," you started, pushing the thoughts of you and Neteyam as far as you could. "Even if I decided I liked him. That's if. If I did, his father wants him to be mated soon as well. He's Neteyam, I doubt he would settle for someone like me."
"Oh Y/n," Tsireya cooed, grasping your hand lightly. "Don't do that. Do not discount yourself. You are one of the most beautiful women on this island, anyone would be lucky to be your mate. Especially Neteyam."
Smiling gratefully at her, you didn't like the feeling that bubbled up when you pictured being with Neteyam. "Oh whatever. You're just pushing me towards Neteyam because you already like the family." You teased, laughing harder when her cheeks turned purple at the subtle mention of Lo'ak.
You can't help but let the thought of you and Neteyam linger the next few days. Yes, you enjoyed his company, but could you really spend the rest of your life as his mate?
You avoided him, denying that you could ever feel about him in that way. Denying that you shuddered at his touch, that you loved the way his eyes looked, that you loved how he talked, how he-
Ripping you from your thoughts, a pair of arms wrapped around you. "Hi y/n." Your favorite voice spoke, bringing a smile to your face.
"Hi 'Teyam." Yoy cheerfully replied, worries from before now long forgotten.
"You okay?" he asked, a concerned look in his eyes. "You looked like you were deep in thought."
"I'm fine," you assured, brought back to your harsh reality. "Just-"
"Trying to figure out who you could tolerate as a mate?"
You chuckled, nodding. "Yeah, pretty much."
"Then c'mon, let's go find someone."
Your protests against the idea of spying around the island to look for boys were quickly tossed aside. He was determined to find someone for you, and you couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed that he wanted to find someone for you so soon.
"Rotxo!" Neteyam called out, waving over at the boy. You rolled your eyes, but following the boy as he walked over towards Rotxo.
"Y/n, Neteyam, what are you two up to?"
"Nothing much," you smiled flatly, giving Neteyam a knowing look. "Just walking around the beach, showing him around the island."
"Ah, well, have fun! Let me know if you two need anything."
You both thanked him as you said your farewells and walked away, Neteyam glancing down at you multiple times. "...no?"
"No."
You continued on with your hunt, opting to look from afar rather than engage in a conversation with every boy you saw. You smiled and nodded at guys who didn't seem too bad, but you were silent for the most part. Neteyam wasn't dumb, you may not have been the closest but he could tell something was off. "Hey, we really don't have to do this if you don't want to."
"No, it's- it's fine," you quietly reassured him, letting a moment of silence pass by as you bit the inside of your cheek. "I'm just scared, you know? I'm going to be mated off with someone who I barely even know. Who I'm not even friends with. What if- what if I don't love him? What if he doesn't love me?" You worried, not realizing how Neteyam gently grasped your hand, squeezing it in comfort.
"Hey, you're going to be fine, alright? If you don't want to meet anyone new, maybe you'll grow to be fond of Ruto, and he'll learn to love you. Or maybe you'll even find someone else when you least expect it. But I'll always be here for you, you know that?"
Your heart clenched at the reminder of Ruto, and the limited time you had. You smiled wordlessly up at him, squeezing his hand back. "Thank you, Neteyam."
"Anytime."
Yet you can't help but feel as though everything won't be fine.
With your time running out and no new candidates, you settle for trying to get to know Ruto. You really have no clue where to start, but you find him on his ilu, probably coming back from a hunt.
"Ruto!" You called out, his head snapping up at response of his name. His eyes land on your own and you freeze, not knowing what to do when he sends a small smile your way, and starts heading over towards you.
You begin to panic, rethinking your decisions. What were you even thinking? You barely know him, he's probably just as confused as you are.
Before you can succumb to the rest of your thoughts, an unfamiliar voice snaps you out of it. "Hey, y/n," the boy greets, towering over you, piercing yellow eyes burning i to your own. "What's up?"
"Uhm-" you stutter, swallowing down your suddenly very dry throat. "Just walking around. Wanted to see what you were up to."
Ruto hums, nodding once he finally understands why you came to him. "This is about our- arrangement, isn't it?"
"Yeah."
"I'm sorry, that's it's all so awkward. Truth be told I wasn't for it either, but my parents were so insistent," he laughs at you when you groan in frustration. "How about this. We'll get to know each other. And if you really don't want to go through with this, we'll talk to them together."
You take a moment, considering his offer. There was no downside, really, at least for you. One hand, you make your parents and everyone else happy by finding a mate, or you get what you really want, a chance to finally get to know somebody, and take your time in choosing.
"Deal."
You and Ruto spent the next couple days together practically every minute, choosing activities that the other enjoyed, and learning more about each other the more you were together. Your parents were pleased at the interaction and word around the village traveled fast, everyone chattering about how you finally found 'the one'.
Neteyam ended up finding out the news from Lo'ak. Yes, it was his idea, but he couldn't help the way his heart sank when everyone was talking about you and your new mate, and how he was able to confirm the news with his own eyes when he spotted you two.
He sat in his family's marui, quieter than usual. Kiri and Lo'ak quickly noticed, exchanging knowing looks. "If you scrunch your face like that any longer, it's going to be permanent."
"Shut up, Lo'ak."
"I'm just saying. He's had that god awful pout on his face the past few days, it's bringing my mood down. What's wrong?"
Glaring his sibling's way, Neteyam only shook his head, eyes averting to the ocean. "Nothing's wrong."
"Something seems pretty wrong to me," Lo'ak stated, shrugging and leaning back casually. "Ever since y/n has been out and about with Ruto lately you seem all alone and missing her company and-"
The younger brother paused, mouth agape while his hand flies to cover it. "OH EYWA! You like y/n!"
"You are so slow sometimes, Lo'ak," Kiri rolled her eyes in annoyance, looking to Neteyam who seemed just about as surprised as his brother. "Don't tell me- you just realized too?"
She took his silence as a yes and pinched the bridge of her nose, sighing at both her brothers stupidity. "Neteyam, you cannot. She's betrothed to Ruto."
"I know." He replied quietly.
"And her parents aren't likely to change their minds."
"I know."
"And she actually seems to be enjoying his company lately."
"I know."
"So you better hurry up and tell her how you feel."
"I kn- wait, what?" Neteyam cut himself off, head swiveling to face the two. They only shrugged, as if it was the simplest thing in the world. "I can't just- just go and tell her how I feel."
"Why not? I mean really, what do you have to lose. If it doesn't work out then she ends up with Ruto anyways."
"You're not making me feel any better."
"Just go!"
So, like a man on a mission, Neteyam hurried to find you, only to see you with Ruto once more. He pauses mid-stride, wondering if this is really the best way to go about it. But in a moment of courage he acts on instinct, approaching you two.
You speak first, and when your laugh turns silent he can't help but feel as if he's intruding. "Neteyam? What's going on?"
"I just-" he stops himself, seeing Ruto stand next to you. He sees the way you two look together, almost perfect. Your beauty matches his own looks, and in no doubt would he provide well for you. His heart hammers in his chest, and cowardly, he averts the topic. "I was wondering if you've seen Ezo. I was thinking of taking you and my father's advice about reaching out to other women on the island."
"Oh," you quietly exclaimed, clearing your throat for whatever reason. "She was by the reef with Rotxo, last time I saw her."
He quickly thanked you and walked off, missing the way your face fell, and how Ruto was quick to console you.
"I guess I was wrong," you softly spoke, now sitting with both Tsireya and Ruto. Their eyes held sympathy for you, trying their best to help you in this complicated situation. "I mean, I really thought I had it all figured out. Me and Ruto were going to tell our parents that it isn't going to happen with us, and that I want to take it slow with someone I had in mind. And then he just- drops this on me!"
Tsireya rubs her hand on your shoulder in comfort, feeling sorry for her best friend. "Well- maybe it didn't even go well between them. For all we know, he could hate Ezo right now."
"Nobody hates Ezo." You state, Ruto quietly agreeing but still earning a glare from Tsireya.
"Maybe, just maybe, you should tell Neteyam how you feel anyways. He's looking for other women, but he's blind to the one just in reach."
"I don't know-" You start to protest, almost immediately getting cut off by both Ruto and Tsireya.
"No," they start, Ruto speaking up after. "You're going to tell Neteyam how you feel. Stop sulking on your butt and go get your man."
You whine and stomp your feet, childlike, before finally getting up. "Fine, I'm going. If this all goes wrong I'm blaming you both."
"Looking forward to it. Have fun!"
You wander along the sand, looking out of place and feeling more uncomfortable as more time passes. You try to spot Neteyam's dark blue skin, but to no avail, are unable to find him amongst the crowd of metkayina men.
Walking aimlessly and just about to give up on your search, you finally see him with Ezo, which is unsurprising. You can't decide if you should greet them, hide behind a tree, or hope that the ocean swallows you whole at any given moment. You opt for the latter, standing there awkwardly.
Neteyam greets you before you can say anything, and they both walk to you, and you decide to meet them halfway. They both wear a wide grin, and the sight feels like someone stabbed a dagger through your chest.
"What are you doing here? I thought you were with Ruto." Neteyam curiously piped up, making your chest throb even more when you think, he doesn't even want to see you.
"He just had some duties," you lie, shrugging carelessly. "I was just walking along here before I go back to my marui. What were you two up to?" You asked, hoping you wouldn't regret it.
"Well we spent most of the day together," Neteyam answered you, the truth making it feel like someone was slowly chipping away at your heart. "We swam and went on rides with the ilus..." he kept telling you about their day, but you stopped listening, zoning out.
We, we, we. It was funny how such a small word could cause you so much pain.
"Well that's lovely!" You faked a smile, blinking rapidly before tears would fall down your face. You turned away hastily, making your way in the opposite direction while yelling a jumble of words. Something along the lines of, "Wouldn't want to be in the way, see you later!"
Your face burns with embarrassment, thinking you could just march up and tell Neteyam that you want him, and he would willingly accept you. You think you got away, and then you hear him run up from behind you, making you shut your eyes tightly and hope he won't notice the red in your eyes.
"Y/n?" He called out worriedly, turning you around to face him, your eyes opening involuntarily. Ezo is nowhere to be seen, yet you really can't find it in you to care all that much. "What's wrong? Why are you crying?" Neteyam questions, on making you want to cry harder.
"So much," you croak, trying to stop your voice from cracking as you continued to talk. "So much is wrong. I'm such a mess. I met Ruto and I became friends with him but I can't even get myself to like him, and then I feel like everything's hopeless, and that I won't find someone I like here and then I meet you," you sniffle, wiping your nose with the back of your hand, "and for the longest I can't comprehend what I feel for you and by the time I realize it's too late because you've already went off and found another girl."
"Hey," he soothes, head dipping down so his eyes can meet your own. "Who says I don't feel the same way about you?"
"Even if you did," you cried out hopelessly, all your pent up feelings unraveling in front of the one person you didn't want it to. "You'd have to wait so long. I don't- I don't want to rush into this. It's tedious, having to wait for someone like me when there's girls like Ezo who are ready for you now."
"There's nothing tedious about waiting for the girl you want to be ready," Neteyam spoke softly still, his thumb rubbing against the inner part of your forearm. "And I don't want girls like Ezo," he laughed, his other hand cupping your cheek. "I want you."
Before you even have the chance to protest, or come up with some dumb excuse or reason why you aren't fit for him he presses his lips to yours, deeming it the best way to shut you up. His lips mold against yours almost perfectly, and he finally pulls away, his smile brighter than any stars in the sky. "I only want you," he whispers, lips brushing against yours once more.
"So take your time, alright?"
a/n — anyways hope u enjoyed <33

𝕄𝕪 𝕊𝕦𝕟𝕤𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕖 (Part 1)
Neteyam x Na’vi!Avatar!Fem!Reader
Warnings!: Fluff
Tumblr media
The hardest part of being best friends with the eldest Sully son was falling in love with him.
Well, the falling in love bit was easy but the dealing with it was the hard part.
“Quit falling behind, hì'i tsawke!” Neteyam teased, grinning at you from his ilu.
“I am not falling behind!” you sneered back, smiling to yourself at the way Neteyam threw his head back with a smile of his own.
The two of you had been inseparable since you were young. You were a product of Norm and the other remaining scientists trying to replicate the avatar product without the actual DNA of humans. To their surprise, it had worked, popping out a small avatar baby. Jake had offered to take you in, as he had with Kiri but Norm insisted that he could raise you, and he did. He taught you both the life of the Na’vi and the humans. You had always been thankful for his raising of you.
Ever since you had been created, Jake had become a mentor to you. He often allowed you and Spider to be around his own children, enjoying how you would all play and bond.
You had especially bonded with Neteyam early on, him being the eldest. You vividly remember him declaring that the two of you would remain together forever and that he would always protect you. This declaration had been made when you were children after he scared off an awfully ferocious school of fish in the river, but it was one you had never forgotten.
Due to the closeness of the two of you, Neteyam insisted that you join the large family in your travels to the Metkayina clans. Jake thankfully obliged and you were allowed to remain with the boy.
“Neteyam!” you called after him, watching as the boy dove under the water. You rolled your eyes at his antics. He was quick to reappear next you, a playful smile on his lips.
“Yes, hì'i tsawke?” he said, swimming in a slow circle around you.
“Let’s stop at a rock or a shore or something,” you suggested. “We could relax.”
“Alright.” Neteyam looked around quickly before his eyes landed on a small and flat formation of rocks. His nodded towards it and you smiled. He led you to the rock, your ilu following close behind his own.
The taller boy was quick to help you off the creature as soon as his feet hit the solid floor.
“What should we do to relax?” you asked placing yourself on the smooth rock.
“You can sing to me,” Neteyam suggested with a coy smile. “Like when we were young,” he added.
You let out a small laugh. Like most of your memories with Neteyam, you vividly remembered the first time you had sang to him. You were both much younger, and it was after he had fallen trying to chase some sort of creature. His knee had been scraped up and little you had no idea what to do. So, you decided to sing to him like your father did when you were hurt or afraid. Ever since then you had gained a nickname and the heart of the Chiefs eldest son.
The song had become the connector between you two. After any fight or argument, you would simply sing the song and everything will get better.
“You are my sunshine,” you sang quietly, just as you did that day. “My only sunshine.” Neteyam slowly laid back, allowing his head to lean on your legs. “You make me happy when skies are gray.” He smiled up at you softly. “You never know, dear how much I-“
You stop your singing, voice catching in your throat.
“-how much I like you,” you finished. “So please don’t take my sunshine away.”
“Beautiful as always,” Neteyam complimented. You rolled your eyes with a blush, pushing aside the compliment.
You looked back at the boy, feeling his eyes on you. Your face on my flushed more as he stared at you silently. “Y/n, I-“
He was cut off by the sound a loud horn.
“That’s the sound of the war horn,” you stated, sitting up quickly.
Neteyam nodded, rushing to his feet. “I need to go help my father,” he said, looking down at you. “Please stay here and stay safe.”
“But-“
“Please, hì'i tsawke,” he begged, kneeling down to your level.
“Alright,” you agreed, letting out a sad sigh. “You stay safe as well, Nete.”
“I will.” He quickly bent down and kissed your forehead before rushing away into battle.
hì'i tsawke: little sun

20 questions for fic writers
thank you @sisterofficerlucychen ilu 💕
How many works do you have on Ao3?
13
2. What is your total Ao3 word count?
22,129
3. What fandoms do you write for?
The Rookie and Chicago PD
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
I Guess I'm Still Learnin' (How To Talk To Girls)
Feel Your Kiss On Me
I Kinda Might Sorta Like Love You A Little Bit
When I Taste Tequila
Forever Feels Like This
5. Do you respond to comments?
I definitely try to. I used to be a lot better about it. But I absolutely read every single one
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don't think any of them? I don't really do angst 😅 If I had to pick, I'd say Giants simply because the ✨situation ✨wasn't resolved
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I Guess I'm Still Learnin' (How To Talk To Girls) is hella fluffy and it just has happy vibes. The ending for You Guys Got Married is just warm and fuzzy for me because I wrote it exactly how I wanted it to happen on screen
8. Do you get hate on fics?
nope! I've never gotten any negative comments. Everyone has been so kind 🥰
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I've tried, but I'm very bad at it lol. I've definitely written my fair share of allusions to something more spicy, but that's about it. I'd love to give it a better shot one of these days
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
no, it's not really my thing. I'm not really a huge fan of reading them either
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I once had a scene stolen almost word for word, but not an entire fic. I hasn't thrilled about it, but I chose to take it to mean that I did well writing the scene 😂
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
no, but that would be pretty cool!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not really. @lady-rhaesnow beta read You Guys Got Married and offered some suggestions after I pestered her lol. I would love to cowrite something. I'm going to quote Ivy and say holler at me if you want to 😁
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Upstead was the reason I joined tumblr and started writing fics to begin with, and they'll always be my first love. Booth and Brennan were my first ever ship, so they hold a special place in my heart. However, Chenford has my whole heart at the moment ☺
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I Guess I'm Still Learnin' (How To Talk To Girls)
I've been working on a third chapter off and on for months. I just can't figure out how to make it work the way I want it to. I just don't have the inspiration for it
16. What are your writing strengths?
Emotions, I guess? I think I'm pretty good at writing how a character feels and how their emotions affect them
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
descriptors. I suck at describing body language and movement
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I've done a sentence or two, but that's it. I took four years of French in high school, and when someone says "it gets lost in translation," they're definitely right. I used Google Translate for those few sentences, and Google Translate sucks are nuances, so I'm afraid that I wouldn't get my point across properly. If I knew the language better, I'd be all for it
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Chicago PD, specifically Upstead ☺
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
DON'T MAKE ME PICK BETWEEN MY BABIES I'm going to say Feel Your Kiss On Me or When I Taste Tequila. Idk I just really like them. I feel like they're really true to the characters, and I love the fluff and humor in them
Tagging @sylvies-chen @headlightsatmidnight @silverskull @fighterkimburgess @justmypartner no pressure 💕

"How come you're always with Aonung and Tsireya? I thought the Olo'eyktan and Tsahik were pretty strict with the two of them." The topic came up as Neteyam and Rotxo hunted for fish to feast.
Aonung and Tsireya were out teaching Kiri and Lo'ak how to ride an ilu, leaving the two who volunteered to stay behind and get ready for dinner.
It's lately been a tradition for Jake and Tonowari's family to dine together as a bonding experience. The two got along well, and even Ronal and Neytiri managed to set aside their differences.
However, what puzzled Neteyam was Rotxo's frequent attendance despite not being related to any of them. He wasn't there all the time, but Tonowari would make sure he was by ordering Aonung or Tsireya to bring him over.
The Metkayina boy shrugged his shoulders, stabbing a fish with his spear and adding it to the pile. "I'm not quite sure, it's been a long time."
That was a half lie. While he couldn't remember every detail of his relationship with the royalty of Awa'atlu, he didn't exactly trust Neteyam enough to tell him the truth.
Neteyam frowned, noticing his hesitation through his lie. "It's okay, you can tell me. We're friends, aren't we?"
Rotxo smiled at that and decided to put the spear down. He sat on a rock and patted the space beside him, motioning for Neteyam to sit with him. With a deep breath, his eyes met the other's.
"Okay, I'll tell you."
———
Rotxo barely even knew what happened. He was 7 years old, young and naive. All he remembered was playing with Aonung and Tsireya before eventually hearing the clicking of ilus from far away.
His eyes lit up as he knew it was his mother's return. He let go of the seashells he was holding before running to his mother, Aonung pouting as he watched him leave. Tsireya giggled at his excitement.
"Mama! Mama!" He called out and tried to rush to her before a hand was placed on his chest, making him stop. Tonowari smiled at the young child's excitement.
"Your mother has had a long journey. Why don't you wait until she has finished resting, dear child?"
Tonowari and Ronal had always been close with Rotxo's parents, becoming great friends when his mother became Awa'atlu's greatest soldier. His father was a great maker of medicine, Ronal's right hand man. However, he died when Rotxo was still a baby, so he never knew who he was.
Rotxo nodded eagerly to the man, before a loud scream caught his attention.
"Ay'nat! She has been injured! Call the Tsahik!" One of the warriors yelled, carrying the injured woman in his arms. Rotxo recognized it as his mother and tried to run to her, only to be held back by Tonowari.
"Son, keep playing with Aonung and Tsireya. This is an adult matter."
"But my mom-!"
"Your mom will be safe, okay? Go, return to them."
Rotxo hesitated, but he knew he was powerless. He wanted to cry as he nodded, solemnly returning to the beach where Aonung and Tsireya continued to play with seashells and rocks.
When he sat with them, he didn't play. Tsireya tried asking him what's wrong and Aonung threatened to punch anyone if they bullied him, but Rotxo didn't respond. He may have been young, but he wasn't stupid.
His mother was hurt and he knew.
When nightfall came, Rotxo sat outside his mother's Marui that had been covered by a cloth as a makeshift curtain. Everytime he tried to come in or call for her name, he'd be held back by one of the warriors who kept guard.
He was too young to know what was happening but whenever she cried out, he knew that she was in pain. It gave him comfort, somehow. To know that she was still alive.
His eyes shut everytime she let out an agonising scream, one that will forever leave shivers down his spine. Tears escaped his eyes as he held on tight to one of the warriors who were tasked with comforting him.
His mother was all he had, he couldn't lose her.
"Shhh, child. Your mother will be okay." Even with the warrior's comforting words, Rotxo was old enough to know it was a lie.
When the screaming finally stopped, he got out of the man's arms and stood in front of the clothed pod. Just barely, he could see her lifeless silhouette through the shadows.
Rotxo lifted the cloth, coming face to face with Ronal and the others who tried to help her. His tear stained cheeks became glossy once again.
"She's gone, isn't she?"
Ronal sobbed and ran to him, hugging him tight as she said sorry every second. "I am so sorry, my child. I tried my best, but it was not enough. Will you ever forgive me?"
Rotxo wrapped his small arms around the woman's body, crying loud like a banshee. His hand reached for his mother, but she was out of reach.
One of the healers covered Ay'nat's face with a cloth, tears streaming down their cheeks. With Rotxo's cries, they couldn't contain their own.
All he could do was cry and watch as her body was taken away, probably to get her ready for a death ritual.
Rotxo was all alone.
On the day of the ceremony, he sobbed louder than anyone else, holding his mother's lifeless body in his small hands before they brought her down into the deep water.
His crying outsang the songs that were sung by the people of the tribe, screaming for her to come back. Even when he tried to quiet himself, the tears would only come back again. He was just a child, after all.
Eventually, it was finally time to say his last goodbyes. The funeral bearers took her body from him, bringing her to the depths of the ocean where she became one with Eywa.
Rotxo looked through the water, his salty tears mixing with the equally salty sea. After all those years, she was gone. That's it. He was alone.
At least that's what he thought.
There was a hand on his shoulder, bringing him up from the water. Tonowari. The man hugged him tight, letting the small child cry into his shoulder as Ronal, Aonung, and Tsireya joined.
"We will take care of you, son. It is what your mother wanted." Tonwari said, stroking his hair ever so slightly.
"My child… after my passing, he will have no one. Please, Ronal… take care of my son. Let him know he is not alone." Was the last thing Ay'nat said before her eyes lost it's shine, as did her body lose its life.
After the funeral, the first thing Ronal did was wipe his tears, planting a kiss on his forehead. "You are one of us now, my child."
He wasn't alone. He still had family.
———
Neteyam looked at him, shocked by the new discovery. Rotxo looked everywhere but at the other boy, embarrassed to have told him his entire backstory. The kids always teased him for not having a biological family, but Aonung always scared them off.
That's why he felt a connection with the newcomers despite making fun of them for their differences. In a way, they were just like him. Different.
"You've got a good family, Rotxo. I'm glad." Neteyam placed a hand of comfort on the back of his neck, taking the other boy off guard before eventually settling into the touch.
"Thanks, I'm glad too. I miss my parents, but… I wouldn't change a thing."

excuse me SPIDEYKAIBA?! PLS
Jay ilu thank you for always enabling my crossover hoe tendencies 😎
spideykaiba
A post-canon YGODM/Spider-Man crossover! The story begins with Shizuka moving to NYC for med school and rooming with Anzu, who is now an early-career dancer. The Kaiba brothers are also in NYC heading up KaibaCorp America, and predictably they have gotten themselves involved in some weird shit that may or may not have to do with SHIELD.
“I was on my way home from work. Street was totally blocked off,” Anzu said. “The cops didn’t want to let me through, but I managed to get a good look. Apparently most of the apartments were undamaged, we just got really unlucky.” “Woah.” “Yeah. The police officer said it was Spider-Man’s fault.” Mokuba frowned. “The NYPD don’t like Spider-Man very much. You have to take everything they say about him with a grain of salt.” “Thank God I had my laptop with all my homework,” Shizuka muttered into the vinyl tabletop.
“Priorities, both of you!” Anzu cried in frustration, smacking the diner table with her open palm. “Who cares about defending Spider-Man right now? He blew up our apartment. Which means we are homeless. Which means stop worrying about your grades for one second, Shizuka.” “Aw, you’re not homeless,” Mokuba soothed. “You can come stay with us.” “Oh, yeah, because we’re clearly your brother’s favourite people right now.” “My brother only has one favourite person, and that’s me. Everyone else is divided into people he hates and people he tolerates. You guys are still in the second category.” Anzu groaned. “I wonder if we can stay with Michelle for a couple weeks while we look for a new apartment? Is it too weird to ask? Maybe we can afford a few days in a hotel.” Mokuba finished drafting a text and hit send. The reply pinged back a moment later. “Yup. Nii-sama says you can stay with us. He’ll buy you new clothes and supplies and stuff too, to replace what you lost.” Shizuka lifted her head from the table, stunned out of her stupor. “What?” She craned over the phone to read the text exchange. Mokuba: anzu and shizuka’s apartment got blown up by spiderman last night can they stay with us for a while and can we help them replace their stuff thanks niisama you’re the best and i love you forever 💙🐉👍 Seto: Fine Anzu finished reading at about the same time Shizuka did and turned to Mokuba. “Has it ever occurred to you that you have a frightening amount of power?” “Yup,” Mokuba said again.

oooh yes definitely. I still have the halloween prompts I wanna finish, but I definitely wanna delve more into spooky/horror stuff because that's my fave genre ever. I've also always loved soulmate fics and wanted to take a swing at it- maybe 2023 will finally be the year 👀
16) Do you have that one fanfic that you wrote a ton for, ages ago, but never posted? Will this be the year, come hell or high water, that it WILL get finished and posted?
bestie I sure hope so sldkfjslkdfj there's two actually!!! one is a masquerade reader x ethan fic that @bethanysnow asked for Forever ago and I am DETERMINED to finally finish that beth you've been so patient ilu and the other has been sitting in pieces in my drafts for well over a year now, but it's a reader x damiano in which damiano gets collared and leashed. it's sorta d/s but not quite, but very much is just focused on two people learning about and trying to incorporate a new kink into their relationship <3

ALWAYS BEEN YOU !
a/n — i swear i will finish requests but i'm having a rotxo brain rot
You were always close with Tsireya and Ao'nung, so naturally, that meant you were childhood friends with Rotxo. You grew up first hand experiencing his kindness, his sweet smiles. You spent so much time with the boy, he was one of your closest friends.
Considering the amount of time you spent together with him, you were surprised he never picked up on your clear interest in him. Even Tsireya and your own parents had known for the longest time. You'd liked Rotxo before you fully understood what it meant to hold romantic feelings for someone, and yet, you never did anything about it.
You were only a year younger than the boy, but naturally, you two had different friend groups. Of course, you'd still see him whenever you would hang out with Tsireya and her brother, but outside of that, you never bothered to come up to him with other friends. At first you were too scared to, but as you grew up, you just started to care less for most of his friends.
So as you sat with Tsireya on the beach, only half paying attention to what she was saying (something about Lo'ak, if you were to guess) and admiring Rotxo with his friends, Tsireya lightly slapped your thigh, making you jump. "What was that for?"
"You weren't even listening, were you?" She narrowed her eyes at you, following where you were looking. At the sight of the curly haired boy, she smacked her forehead, giggling.
"No! I was!" You lied, averting your gaze and turning your attention back to your friend. At the sight of her tilting her head, you shrugged nonchalantly, flashing a grin. "Lo'ak?"
She shoved you with a laugh, shaking her head. "Whatever, it's too hard to get your attention when a certain someone is around." Tsireya teased, her laughs increasing when you blushed at the mention of the boy.
"Oh hush. I wasn't staring at him, I was...admiring the waves." You nodded, Tsireya clearly not believing you.
"Why don't you just tell him how you feel, y/n? You've felt like this for years, he should know at some point."
You sighed, quickly glancing back over at Rotxo. "Reya, we've been friends since forever. And I've liked him since before I even knew how to ride an ilu. How would I even tell him that? And imagine he doesn't feel the same. I could never be able to face him again."
"Face who again?" A voice suddenly pitched in, a pair of wet arms wrapping around your shoulders. Recognizing who it was your eyes widened, Tsireya containing her laughter from across from you.
"No one!" You squeaked, happy you weren't facing Rotxo at the moment. Your heartbeat quickly sped up once you realized how he was holding you, your face practically purple.
"Okay..." he wearily responded, grabbing ahold of your hands (was he trying to send you into cardiac arrest?) and dragging you up. "Cmon, guys, don't be such bummers. Come swim with us!"
Of course, you accepted his invitation and Tsireya followed, as you joined her brother and the others to the waves.
After you had hung out with Rotxo, you'd taken Tsireya's words to heart. She was right, in a way. You would need to tell Rotxo how you felt eventually, especially if you wanted it to go somewhere. You all were getting older, and soon enough he would be looking for potential mates. You heart pained at the thought of him being with someone else who wasn't you, considering how long you'd spent loving him.
You were walked aimlessly around when you stumbled upon Kiri, both of you exchanging surprised looks. The two of you never really talked, considering you spent a lot of time with Ao'nung, and you knew how Kiri wasn't very fond of him. You waved awkwardly, greeting the girl. "Hi."
"Hi." She shyly replied, avoiding your gaze. Truth be told, you wanted to get closer to the Sully siblings, but you never really knew if they wanted your company or not, being friends with Ao'nung and all.
"Um-" you hesitated, looking around. "What were you doing around here?"
"Just, looking around and sorts. It's very beautiful here."
You smiled, nodding in agreement. "It really is. Do you miss the forest?"
In your attempt to continue the conversation, Kiri decided you were different than some of your friends. "I do," she admitted, staring off towards the ocean. "But I do enjoy it here. You have very beautiful creatures."
You sat down a small distance away from her, agreeing. "The ilus are my favorite." You shared, and you two spent the rest of the day asking each other about your clans, and Kiri's previous environment.
It was nice, making a new friend and for once, not worrying about the boy that was always on your mind.
From the interaction you grew closer to Kiri, and with that, her siblings as well. Whenever Tsireya was off with others you hung out with Kiri, or whichever sibling was with her at the time.
So, as you and Kiri made your way towards the reef you saw Ao'nung and Rotxo walking around, Rotxo a slightly nervous expression on his face. You called out to them and they stopped, and they made their way over to you, Ao'nung clearly about to make a comment on Kiri before he was smacked by Rotxo and earned a stern glare from you.
"What are you two skxawngs up to?" You smiled, practically beaming at the sight of your favorite boy.
Hesitating, Rotxo cleared his throat multiple times, putting an awkward hand to the back of his neck. Before he could come up with an answer Ao'nung slung an arm around his friend, grinning. "Well, our parents have talked to us both about how we're getting older and need to be looking for possible mates. So we're scavenging around for some possible girls."
You blinked rapidly, trying to prevent yourself from getting teary eyed. You suddenly grew uncomfortable in the situation, nodding at the words. "Well, that's lovely. Have fun." Knowing you didn't mean those words, Kiri grabbed ahold of your arm, taking you away and mumbling something about having to meet her brothers at the reef.
As he watched the two of you leave, Ao'nung made a look of confusion, not seeing the sullen look on Rotxo's face. "What's up with her?"
You were silent the whole walk, Kiri's siblings immediately noticing your mood once you arrived. Tsireya, who was with Lo'ak, immediately ran up to you, eyes concerned. "What happened?"
When you didn't respond Kiri hesitantly spoke, looking at you carefully. "Well, we saw Ao'nung and Rotxo on our way here," she paused, you and her taking a seat down with everyone else. "And they mentioned how their parents told them they were getting older and mates and such," she paused again, grasping your hand firmly. "And then Ao'nung mentioned how they were on a search for possible mates."
"Oh that skxawng!" Tsireya complained, huffing at her brother's pure stupidity. Lo'ak looked around, obviously confused before he cleared his throat to gain your guys' attention.
"Not to sound stupid or anything, but what exactly is going on?"
Hissing in pain when Kiri slapped her brother you laughed, shaking your head. "It's alright. I've kind of had this thing for Rotxo for the past few years."
"Oh don't be such a liar," Tsireya cut you off. "Y/n has been in love with Rotxo ever since she learned how to swim. She's been pining over him hopelessly for years, and he's stupid and hasn't realized a thing."
So you spent most of the day with the siblings and Tsireya, all of them doing their best to comfort and cheer you up, trying to take your mind off of Rotxo.
You avoided Rotxo the best you could since the situation, and it had been days since the two of you talked. You knew you were bound to run into him one way or another, but you were hoping to delay the inevitable as long as possible.
But of course, luck was never on your side when you spotted Rotxo with a girl. They were talking together and Rotxo seemed like he was having a good time so you tried making your getaway as fast as possible, pretending you didn't hear calls of your name.
"Y/n, hey!" Rotxo panted, grabbing ahold of your arm to stop you in your path. "I feel like I haven't seen you in so long."
You bit the inside of your cheek, trying to figure out what to say. Refusing to admit to anything, you only shrugged. "Sorry, I guess I've just been spending some more time with the Sully's while you were- uhm-" You nodded awkwardly over towards the girl, your heart dropping once you recognized her. Aveyti.
"Oh yes, Aveyti." You practically winced at her name, eyes dropping to look down to the sand. It wasn't necessarily the fact he had found company in another girl, it was that he found company in her. You were never the fondest of Aveyti, as her beauty was misleading from her large ego.
"She seems cool." You muttered, your attention still on the sand between where the two of you stood.
"So you wouldn't mind if I mated with another? With Aveyti?" Rotxo slowly questioned, making your head shoot up.
"Uhm, no." You lied, looking him straight in the eyes. Each word you spoke was like a dagger to your heart, a constant reminder that you were just too late. "I wouldn't. It's not my business, anyways. Aveyti is very beautiful. So if she makes you happy, I think you should go for it."
"Oh," The boy spoke, awkwardly fidgeting with his hands. "Well I'm glad you approve. I should- probably get back," He pointed back over his shoulder, towards Aveyti. "I'll see you around, yeah?"
"Bye." You waved, walking away from Rotxo and to your friends with glossy eyes and a heavy heart.
Rotxo couldn't help but miss you the next couple of weeks. You refused to talk to him since your last encounter, and he couldn't figure out why. Every time he saw you and tried to approach you, you always came up with an excuse, and your responses were always curt. He missed the presence of his friend, and upon asking Tsireya what was happening, was only called a skxawng.
So he was stuck, spending most of his time with either Ao'nung or Aveyti. The girl must have convinced herself that Rotxo had chosen her as his promised mate, so she clung onto him like a leech, not leaving his side. Truth be told, he didn't even like her that much. Their past few conversations he was always detached, his mind on you.
However, eywa seemed to grace Rotxo today, as Aveyti's mother called for her help today, and he could finally confront you about your distance today. He found you with Kiri and Tsireya, calling your name from afar before making his way towards you.
The girls made panicked faces towards you and you shook your head, calming them down. "It's okay, I got this." You reassured, and ushering them away as you turned around to meet the boy.
"Hi, Rotxo."
"Why are you avoiding me?" He didn't bother with a greeting, getting straight to the point.
You winced, averting your gaze from him. "I don't know, I guess I've just been spending a lot of time with other people."
"Y/n," he sternly called your name, taking a step closer to you. "I know when you're lying. Just tell me the truth. Please?"
Thoughts racing, you bit your lip, not seeing a way out of this. "I just- I just don't like Aveyti, I guess."
Scoffing at your answer, Rotxo shook his head. "You told me you thought she seemed nice not too long ago!"
"Well I lied!" You shouted back, making the boy stumble back. "I lied, okay? I don't like her. I think she's egotistical, I think she's stupid, I think she doesn't care about anyone other than herself. And I don't think she would make a good mate."
"Whatever happened to it 'not being your business', y/n? You sure have a lot to say for someone who claimed you had nothing to do with this."
"I know! I just- I don't think she's good for you. Truthfully."
"Why does it even matter to you?" Rotxo snapped, making you close your eyes shut. You guys always had petty arguments, but it wasn't like this. Never like this. "Hell, I'm not even dating you. So why does it matter so much?"
"You think I don't know that?"
"Then what is your problem?!"
"YOU!" You finally confessed, feeling like your heart was being ripped out of your chest. "You are my problem, Rotxo. My problem is that I have been hopelessly pining over you, but I'm a coward and you're just oblivious. So I'm sorry for no-"
Your rant was cut short when Rotxo grabbed you, tugging you closer to him and pressed his lips to yours, shutting you up. He kissed you feverishly, hands roaming your body. He pecked your lips a few times before pulling away, his forehead resting against yours. "Do you know how long I've been waiting to hear the words?"
Dumbstruck, you gaped at the boy, smile wide as your hand cupped his cheek gently, "You really mean that?"
He nodded, pressing a kiss to the tip of your nose. "It's you, y/n. It's always been you."
a/n — this was 100% self indulgent whoops

Leah. Leah I’m shaking and I am literally crying rn. I’m so happy for them. I know they’re not real, but they got their happy ending. They deserve it and the way you’ve written it is so soft and lovely and I’m so. Emotional over this ex-prince-knight and his not-a-prince-consort (also Screaming over that ilu ilu iludndkfkdkcke).
Their vows. Their vows are going to live rent free in my mind forever. “It has been a lovely thing to grow together, and I look forward to doing so until we are both taken back into the arms of the universe, where we will surely meet again.” This is so lovely and wonderful and if real life romance isn’t a quarter as lovely as Mike saying this to his love, then what even is the Point. Just.
As I’ve said in the past, I’ll say again. Magic with words. You craft with words the way Will crafts with starlight.
And if you ever do decide to publish this as a novel I’ll be there on opening day proud and buying a copy and saying I knew you when. But even if you never do, I’m so happy I got to experience this and fall in love with this story and just.
You are a wonderful writer. I don’t know how else to say it😭💕 I can’t wait to see where you go next🥰
Happy Friday!!
YES!! they got their happy ending!! i was committed to that angst with a happy ending tag!! it took them a while to get there, but they finally did, and i'm happy with how it turned out. like you said, it was very soft, which is exactly what i was going for. i wanted only healing and light for them, and i feel like that's what they've been left with :]
MIKE'S VOW LINE okay okay okay. i think closer to christmas i did one of those ask games for my fics and you submitted some questions and one of them was for what my favorite line from this fic was. AND THAT WAS THE LINE!! i couldn't say it in the ask obviously because i didn't want to spoil it, but that was THEE line. i honestly think some kind of lovesick ghost possessed me when i wrote it because after i typed it out i kinda just stared at my screen muttering "where the hell did THAT come from??" regardless of how it ended up there, i'm glad they got to say such lovely things to each other T_T
i am kicking my feet and sticking your "you craft with words the way Will crafts with starlight" compliment in the special little box i keep in my head for keeping my spirits up 🥺 thank you Veeeeee!!
if something ever does possess me to work on this more as an original idea and turn it into something that can be published and not shot down by copyright law (unless i want my next story to be That One Time The Duffer Bros Sued Me), you'll be first in line to get a copy 😌 tbh i'll personally hunt down every person who left a kudos and shove a copy under their doors. like i said, this fic is very special and dear to my heart, so it makes me happy that people have accepted it with open arms T_T
as far as other ideas: um. so i'm working on Mike pov scenes for this fic because i just think he's neat, and then we're swinging violently between "right person wrong time" angst and flirty Will. so. it's any guess what'll end up finished and posted next 😩
and maybe some day i'll actually finish proofreading that Jonathan one shot right 🙃a girl can dream
thank you so much Vee!! this fic literally wouldn't be finished without your encouragement, so thank youuuu!! i am wishing you a lovely weekend!! :] 💜💜💜
