Let's talk about genocide Starlo

... because on one hand, I understand where the devs were coming from. They wanted to highlight that Star was not the cool, badass sheriff he'd love to be. Some pointed out how, realistically, he couldn't have defeated Clover and especially delivered the final blow (he does it in pacifist/neutral bc hes in the worst possible headspace). Star is a big softie and a "naive fool," lets be real. But still, there is one more thing that he is: caring.

He cares about the town, toursits, especially his friends. It's been shown over and over and OVER again. And i'm sure as hell disappointed he didn't bring a real gun. Yeah, he was always aware this was all play pretend, but just for a few minutes, this man should have tried to be the sheriff he never got the chance to be before.

For the sake of everyone. For the sake of justice.

I'm not even asking for an epic battle. I'm asking for a battle that wouldn't even be close to Undyne's in UT's geno. But it would be Starlo's battle. Even better, he, without thinking, throws his hat on the ground (bc he metaphorically no longer wants to admire or associate himself with humans, ever again), seeing his bff die in front of him and goes either: "I don't care if you make fun. This isn't about being cool anymore. This is about my town, my friends. This is about JUSTICE." or "No... I won't fight you/deliver justice as North Star." *pause* "I'll do it as Starlo." and the dork then just stares at clover (There'd be a "laugh" option if Clover decides to act because, well, they see him for the nerd he is) but he's DETERMINED and at this point it doesn't even matter if he's not skilled, he'd do something he hadn't done in years just for the sake of saving his remaining friends, family, and other potential victims: Starlo would fight AS HIMSELF.

But maybe he wouldn't even fight after he takes his hat off. maybe he'd try to explain to Clover violence isn't the answer like Martlet, because that's something the real him would do. He'd drop the hat, drop the gun, drop the belief that he's a badass, and instead accept that he was, and always will be, a big ol' softie. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Point is, would he actually kill clover? hell no. That would be ooc (now that I think about it, why wouldn't he, when he is able to do it in other 2 routes? And he COULD have done it in flawed pacifist? His whole world and identity crashing down and losing all his friends is terrible, losing his bff to a human he trusted and to whom he gave a gun is also terrible, but so is letting a genocidal maniac continue killing)

But he'd die knowing two things:

1)he had tried to be a real, dignified sheriff, and failed (bc he died, not bc he didn't try. In canon, he doesn't even try and THAT'S SO UNLIKE HIM especially considering the situation)

2)in his final moments, he finally became himself again

and that.. that would have been so much more satisfying than what we got.

smth I find interesting is their differences in like the Definition of murder. like stede didn't directly kill either of the badmintons, but he still thinks of himself as a vicious murderer. but Ed only directly killed ONE person, but indirectly killed soo many ppl, like when Jack says he lit the boat on fire, and he says technically the fire killed those people. my theory is stede hates himself, and has the whole time, so unconsciously he's grasping onto this as a reason for it, and Ed is trying to never think about those people he killed so he doesn't hate himself any more than he has to.... idk I just think its an interesting character detail :-]

the interesting thing to me is that stede did not feel bad At All for "killing" nigel. like he straight up told the elder guy that. the dude asked if he felt bad for killing him and he said Not really, he sucked even as a kid! and figured out that really the reason he felt bad was because he felt inadequate and nigel reminded him he'd abandoned his family (nigel reminding him of this is also how we, the audience, are introduced to the idea that stede left them for piracy) which made him feel guilty about THAT, so what you said about him displacing his self-hatred onto this is pretty accurate.

so he didn't really feel bad about being a murderer. it's why he could leave mind-nigel behind on the shore at the end of that episode. stede isn't as averse to murder as he is to violence, per se. we see in his flashbacks that violence has been associated with masculinity for his whole life, the specific kind of masculinity he's been excluded from, that violence turned on him as a result of his exclusion. also it seems like he just thinks it's gross lol

when chauncey died, it had the same effect: chauncey forced him to remember that he abandoned his family, he didn't really give a shit about chauncey dying, but he remembered what he'd done "to" his family (assuming they were worse off without him) and felt like he needed to resolve that. it had already been on the forefront of his anxieties from learning he had been declared dead, so chauncey just pushed him over the edge, so to speak.

it's telling that when he says "at some point, a man's gotta face the music for the things he's done and the people he's hurt" we get a shot of nigel dying at "the things he's done," a relatively neutral statement, and a shot of his family at "and the people he's hurt," because from his perspective, he really only cares that he (possibly) hurt mary and the kids.

there are some inconsistencies that i hope they explore later, like stede burning that ship of aristocrats alive but looking taken aback when calico jack said ed burned a ship of people alive (with the crew still trapped inside? perhaps that was the difference).

ed's philosophy is harder to parse because we haven't spent as much time with him. he clearly sees violence as monstrous. the only person he's ever killed was his dad, which he did as a last resort to keep his mom safe after his dad was violent, and we don't know for how long that went on. after that he "always outsourced the big job," which seems like a pretty straightforward way to rationalize necessary violence. he didn't skin that guy, fang did. same end, different means.

the fact that he constructed the myth of the kraken around killing his dad is VERY interesting. not only does he outsource actual killing to his crew or other external forces, he took his one true murder and turned it into a horror story he uses to scare people, saying it's the only thing that scared him. it's hard to tell if he genuinely believed in the kraken until stede's fuckery triggered his real memory or if he knew the whole time. either way, he clearly was traumatized by killing his dad and that led him to his current philosophy, whatever the extent of that is.

looking forward to season two, it seems like they're foreshadowing ed dropping this philosophy entirely by not just going back to being blackbeard but declaring himself the kraken, the part of himself he invented to rationalize his one and only murder. which, of course, implies he'll be doing more murdering. we'll see!

(Sorry I send you so many asks but I love your takes) If Kiyo, Miu, Kiibo and Kokichi created themselves a group about how unfairly treated they are, how do you think it would turn out to be in the game? Those 4 had were little respected by the others and had many reason to actually dislike the rest of the cast. Kiyo was treated like a freak, Miu didn't get the appreciation she deserved, Kiibo never got the respect he deserved and Kokichi just got the short end of the stick even for unfair reasons (I admit there were times when he deserved it).

This is genuienly a very good question!! Things would have been super interesting if these group of characters actually got together considering their circumstances.

So how would they band together exactly? A part of me feels like this would be because of Kiibo's doing.

I think for Kiibo to try and form a group with the outcasts would be self-explanatory considering the dynamics he shares with them in canon.

Firstly, Kiibo actually got to know Miu very well to the point where it could be heavily implied that he got to know her even better than half of the V3 cast.

In ch5 Kiibo also literally tried to talk to Kokichi in hopes that they could peacefully get Kaito back without the other characters resorting to violence against him.

As for Kiyo, I don't remember Kiibo particularly having any genuine opinion on him, but one could assume that he did not have any ill-feelings towards Kiyo before chapter 3.

With that being said, Kiibo is the only character who seemed to be more empathetic for the ones who were dismissed by others.

Then we have Kokichi, and well he is hands down the most self-aware character in the group.

He has called out on the groups hypocrisy many, many times.

But theres one particular thing Kokichi says that I think is very interesting.

So he says this right after Miu dies and I think this is pretty self-explanatory. None of the characters (except for Kiibo) tried to genuienly get to know her. They all avoided her constantly.

But then when shes found dead everyone is now suddendly "sad"? Honestly, its pretty evident that most of the characters here were frustrated that they had to do another class trial.

Now Kokichi here talks about how everyone hated her but not as much as they hate him. He obviously knows the rest of the cast dislikes him which sometimes him being disliked can be reasonable, but it is to the point were he gets constantly dismissed and treated like someone who isn't stuck in the same boat as them.

As verbally reckless Kokichi can be, he has called his classmates out multiple time on their bullshit but of course he gets immedietly shut down when he does so.

While Keebo is the one who tries his very best to understand everyone, Kokichi is the observant one who actively realizes the mistreatment of others.

I think that if Keebo tried to form this group and include Kokichi in it, Kokichi would accept out of curiousity but eventually, he is going to realize how he genuienly needed people to actually accept him for who he is.

(tbh I think he would boast about being the leader of that clique and Miu would be so offended claiming no one could tame her or smth lol)

Kokichi being able to be in a group with people who acknowledge him and his efforts would have pretty much prevented him doing his mastermind plan, thus him and Kaito would've been alive.

The next in the group would be Miu and as brash as she can be at times, she is someone who is genuienly hesitatant and scared to trust others. Which of course is completely understandable considering they are in a killing game.

But I think that Keebo would have helped her be more trusting with other people, or atleast with the group that he would be trying to form.

If Miu wasn't excluded by the main cast and she had a solid friendgroup, that would have inevitably stop her from wanting to kill Kokichi.

I think that she would be the first person to join the group if we look back at her dynamic with Keebo. She would definetly be hesitant to let others join but would eventually give in.

I feel like Kokichi would boast to Kaito and the others about having the ultimate inventor in their group but he would obviously put her down at the same time because hey, it is Kokichi after all.

Miu would be very open about her fears of the killing game with the group, she was open to Kokichi in canon about her fears even when they weren't super close so I think she would be a lot more open about her feelings and that conversation would make the others open up too.

And it would probably make Keebo encourage her that it's okay to be alert but that trusting others is a better way to survive.

And then we have Kiyo who I personally think would be pretty hard including into this bunch considering he was already planning on killing the girls he found fit for his sister.

But theres one thing for certain: Kiyo views everyone as friends.

With that being said, Kiyo would waver between being in the group or just remain being an outsider.

Don't get me wrong, Kiyo suffered a lot of dismissal and injustices by many throughout the game and he seems to be aware of these things too, but I keep thinking about the fact that he was observing intently on who was worthy of being his sisters friend that being in the group could be considered a distraction.

On the contrary to the other 3, Kiyo is so used to being an outsider even before the killing game because of how much his sister tended to isolate him.

Keebo had professor Idahashi, Kokichi had D. I.C.E, and Miu supposedly had a lot of support from people because of her inventions.

Kiyo also doesn't really care for Keebo because he isn't human, he sees Kokichi as an insufrable brat, and well he saw Miu as an exception to be one of his sisters friends... Which is considered a bad thing in his book.

Kiyo could join but not 100% join, maybe he would join as an observer and silently use his views on humanity on them and judge them in both good ways and bad ways.

I think he would still be very greatful with the fact that he was being genuienly included in something. And Kiyo being the killer in ch3 would actually leave an emotional impact on the group, but they would eventually overcome it.

Which in its own way would be good consideirng they would actually care about Korekiyo dying and use his death to move forward.

On a very unrelated note, I feel like Gonta would gradually shift between the "main" group and the outcast group considering he cares about everyone.

But honestly, if these characters weren't excluded at all in the canon storyline sooooo many deaths would have been prevented.

Watched Saw 1-3 & thought of smth.. I genuinely believe that Amanda was better of dying in her trap. I don't think that she ever deserved to be there but what John did to her was far worse a fate than death. I genuinely believe that Amanda thinks this too and it's one of the reasons why she rigged her traps in 3 to always kill. I think she believes she shouldve died and that surviving from a saw trap doesn't fix you and is just worse than dying. Maybe thats like what the lore is am I'm just realizing that now but eh.. i do think one thing thats very interesting is amandas extreme will to survive yk? she did what barely anyone could; i havent looked at the exact numbers but very few people actually do survive jigsaws games. the fact shes always been so desperate to cling to life is definitely something i think john admired + something he wanted to use for his advantage. also like... thinking about this, her will to live, it makes you think abt her decision to shoot lynn at the end of saw 3. i can think abt it from a few angles but my main ones are "she did believe john + knew they would all die, but couldnt bring herself to risk john knowing what happened. she was acting on a suicidal urge and had essentially given up" vs "she didnt believe john, and the reason she shoots lynn is because shes too terrified of john learning the truth. she'd rather betray him again than possibly face the full wrath of john". honestly i pingpong between these, going back n forth. it really is something im curious about and think about a lot! i do genuinely think she was terrified of john though, and believed if he found out amanda was complicit in gideons death, whatever he did to her would be so much worse than dying.

Sorry for taking so long to answer, but I wanted to take my time to think in this question.

Little disclaimer:

I’m my profession (historian) we tend to dismiss counterfactual stories because are a trap. Is not possible to know which event is the “key” event, due the relation between processes and events. Even if you try to separate both, end up being impossible. Is the same for persons or characters, how much is their own agency and how much is the result of circumstance? How much is their individuality and how much are the result of structures? It delivers you to a dead end of infinite questions.

However, counterfactual stories are a good exercise to considerer the relevance of an event and to understand the event itself. So, is not possible to write a satisfactory counterfactual story but is an interesting exercise to think in a particular event. I believe your question is more inclined to be an exercise, but I did this little disclaimer because I won’t answer this question with some kind alternative universe where Riko doesn’t die that would be like writing a fanfic rather an analysis.

I will answer which I believe most probably but this doesn’t mean I’m dismissing others possibilities.

How relevant is Riko’s death as an isolated event?

In order to change “destiny” (I’m using this concept to follow the explanatory line of Tengen) How relevant is Riko’s death as an insolated event? In other words, If Riko wouldn’t die Shibuya wouldn’t happened? My answer is: probably no.

If they asked her in the beach meaning the never went to the Tombs of Stars Corridor, that would save her? Probably o. Toji is still there haunting from the shadows. For how long you can keep her save? Toji only needs one distraction to kill her. Even if the merge never happens there is no guaranteed that those who wanted to kill her would stop their intentions. As long as she lives there is chance of merge for them.

What can save Riko? Toji’s death? He needs to show himself in order to be a target for Satoru. He can kill her before he gets kill by Satoru (as we saw).

Tengen says that Toji destroyed the “destiny”, everything seems to be consequences of his actions. What if Toji never existed? Things would be different? My answer is: probably no. Toji is the consequence of the violence of Jujutsu society’s structures. If wouldn’t be Toji, someone with other name probably would have lived a similar life. Because oppression can’t last without creating conditions of its own destruction. About this (if you an interest) I have a post.

Now, let’s consider Suguru’s downfall. If Riko wouldn’t have died, he wouldn’t fall in disgrace? My answer is: probably no. Riko and Haibara’s death are the tragedies he went trough in that time, but there are more potential tragedies that could have happened in his life. To prove this point I will take Haibara’s death as example. He died during his mission and his death is not relevant for Jujutsu society because is something that tends to happened. Haibara is one of many others students who died before graduate. Is one of many sorcerers that die in mission. If Haibara wouldn’t have die, someone else would eventually die in Suguru’s life and this is just statistics. If there is a number of deaths (significant or not) between students and sorcerers per year there is a high chance that some of those deaths are significant to Suguru. Riko and Haibara life don’t necessarily save Suguru from falling down. Because his fell is consequences of his impossibility to reconcile his ideals with the jujutsu machine (how jujutsu society work) and his impossibility to process in a healthy way the tragedy and the contradictions inside of him due ideals/reality. This last aspect as the result of him being too young and the lack of guidance to help him go through this. In summary, his down fall is a mix of subjectivity and circumstance. You can think circumstances as scenarios, you change one to other, but what is most probably to happen is the scheme of those scenarios are the same from one case to other (from one universe to other).

It’s possible to prevent Shibuya?

I will try to clear this up. To Shibuya to happen we need three majors’ “events”:

Riko not merging with Tengen.

Toji’s existences.

Suguru’s downfall.

Saving Riko or not is kind of the same for Kenjaku because he only needs the merge to not happen. Even if Satoru saves Riko and kills Toji, Kenjaku can kill her by themselves when all them let the guard down thinking the threat is over.

If someone with the name of Toji never existed, maybe someone with other name and would have a similar life. Maki is the example of this, but she didn’t follow Toji’s path because she has a different subjectivity and this is the reason, I use the “probably no” and I don’t give a certain answer. (this is what I meant when I said counterfactual stories are a trap).

Suguru’s downfall can still happen for different circumstances and in a different time.

Shibuya’s accident can be avoided at all? No, surely it can, but majors’ changes need to happened before the event.

Maybe if Riko was saved and she rejected merging with Tengen- and this one refused her rejection- Satoru and Suguru would be outcast from Jujutsu society leaving everyone is a poorly position to deal with Kenjaku.

hmmmm doesn't sound familiar, or like something I would say! I think I might have said that it seems like the elves judge kinslayings very severely while not showing the same response to state-sanctioned 'lawful' violence (cf Gondolin execution cliff), as well as killing mortals (Gondolin door policy for mortals seems to involve killing them, Nargothrond door policy if mortal stranger and yes during Finrod's rule-- Beren has to wave ring around to avoid being killed). The value attached to the death of an elf, especially if one not considered lawful-- seems much greater than that attached to the death of a mortal (human or dwarf). I think this attitude does slowly change by the end of the first age when you can see attitude to humans change overall, maybe in part due to playing a role in Ulmo's prophecy as much as prolonged contact with Edain, valiance shown by many mortal heroes etc. It 'deeds of lust’ being rare is something Tolkien wrote himself; he also wrote no elf ever willingly entered into the service of Morgoth, which is perhaps what you meant? As for killing, well, there is a reason why the kinslayings are such plot points; for them to be they need to be rare, at least in scale. Unlawful killing another elf was not accepted.

We get 'Even when in after days, as the histories reveal, many of the Eldar in Middle-earth became corrupted, and their hearts darkened by the shadow that lies upon Arda, seldom is any tale told of deeds of lust among them.' in LaCE.

However, there is a specific quote that is often misread as saying it was impossible for an elf to rape according to LaCE, or that the victim autmatically died. That is not what it says imo.

Now, in the 1959-1960 version of Aredhel's story it says "the sister of King Turgon, astray in the wild near his dwelling, and he took her to wife by force: a very wicked deed in the eyes of the Eldar."

Sites like tolkiengateway state this was changed in the Silm to 'not wholly unwilling' because it contradicts the (1950s) Laws and Customs-- but if you actually look at the paragraph usually referred to you'll notice it explicitly says 'another's spouse' who would then die which is not the same as 'never under any circumstances' -- it is against their nature to do this to someone already married, which is apparently visible in the eyes (uh, oh well. You know. Tolkien). It is also specifically about another's spouse. Make of that what you will. The Arien and Morgoth interaction cited on tkgateway seems entirely irrelevant because a maia has a very different relation to a fana than an incarnate to a body to start with.

Either way, his means neither Eol's actions nor Celegorm's intention to force Luthien into marriage (not simply lust motivated but with the intent to bind Thingol to them, I can find that quote for you if needed) contradict LaCE at all.

UNLESS I'm overlooking yet another LaCE quote used to defend the rape = death reading, which uhm. Is possible. Given the maze that is Tolkien's assorted napkin scribbles as collected by his son.

In my opinion Eol's abusive nature and basically trapping her in Nan Elmoth read as... genuinely not much better wrt the "wholly unwilling" narrative despite the lack of force-- if anything the Silm version where Tolkien tried to remove more graphic implied action feels like it makes Aredhel complicit in her role as a victim in some way to me, but that's personal. I strongly dislike and am uncomfortable with the way the narrative handles Aredhel as a whole-- and I'm not even touching the can of worms that are the way Tolkien wrote Maeglin and Eol. That aside.

Either we are told in the force version that it would be regarded as a 'very wicked deed' i.e. absolutely taboo, and uncommon (again ugh sorry about not being able to locate the quote; am sleepy lol), as was a random murder spree.

The Eldar had laws about what consituted 'lawful killing' which is hinted at in a footnote on why Curufin did not kill Eol (was unlawful under those circumstances at the time), which makes sense given that the relatives of murdered elves have very long memories and will be around forever.

Severe crimes simply do not fade over time or become forgotten when everyone involved has relatives who remember and live on and on and on. This makes laws about things like death very important, and provides a strong motivation to follow them other than 'well elves are by nature Better' though tolkien did pretty much write that in many ways.
