Today’s #MondayMaker is @thelordsacre ! The Lord’s Acre is an AMAZING garden that grows organic food to give away in an attempt to eliminate hunger, build community, and empower others. They believe everyone has something to offer: they don’t buy the “giver” and “receiver” labels of charity. I could go on and on, but The Lord’s Acre does extremely important work. Its name comes from the 1930s when local farmers in this area banded together to donate produce from one acre of their crops to help feed those in need. They called this project “The Lords Acre”. Now some of us see and understand how food and local community are intertwined; and how food can nourish us, bring us together, teach us patience and show us the interconnectedness of this world. Much of the local food movement today is only available to those who can afford it. But @thelordsacre and many other amazing organizations in the Western North Carolina area are making a true effort to reach beyond this small group and use the garden as a hub in which communities, friendship, skills, and empowerment come. If you’re in the WNC area, consider volunteering with @thelordsacre, and if not, I challenge you to see where your community is and what values it is cultivating. A great place to start is to consider where, how, and from who your food comes from :). Thank you @thelordsacre for what you do. Happy belated Earth Day (every day is Earth Day anyways, right?)!! - - - #localfood #localfoodmovement #ashevillenc #gardensthatgive #organicgardening #thelordsacre #localcommunity #foodascommunity #gardening #welcometable #freefood #volunteer #communitybuilding #wnc #makersgonnamake #volunteerwnc
