i meant to make some big well-written post abt it but unfortunately my brain was otherwise occupied experiencing The Horrors so instead, have some wordvomit

this past monday marked twenty years since i went on a field trip to the library and ran my hand along a bookshelf in the children's fiction section and found a book called So You Want To Be A Wizard* and brought it home and read it cover to cover in like. a day. and i couldn't even begin to explain how that day has shaped my life but i do just wanna acknowledge it and say that i'm so glad my friend let me borrow her library card (cause i didn't have my own yet) so i could bring the book home and i'm so glad my mum special ordered the rest of the series from the local independent bookstore almost immediately after i finished it and i'm so glad i discovered the forums and i'm so glad i found so many cousins on tumblr—including my best friend and platonic soulmate @astraldepths—and i'm so glad i got to help plan and execute crossingscon (twice!!) and that i got to meet so many of you in person—INCLUDING DD HERSELF—and i'm just. so glad i discovered this series

i have like twelve copies of SYW but i think my favourite is the twentieth anniversary edition (which is now, itself, twenty years old—wild), because it contains both the short story Uptown Local, which i adore, and an afterword by DD, which i have read entirely too many times. anyway, i wanna share a quote from that afterword, bc it seems fitting:

Wizardry, too, changes with the times, because its practitioners do...and indeed it must change, to keep up with the Lone Power, Itself never averse to using new means to Its old end. Even the Wizard's Oath will seem to change from time to time, altering its appearance according to species, age, cast of mind, and (sometimes) simply according to where you're standing, in time and space, when you examine it. But beyond that, as the series continues, I can promise that some things will always stay the same—the knowledge of a partner's dependable friendship; a shared go-for-broke determination to get it right when the Universe is watching; and the glad adrenaline rush caused by the sudden incursion of the unexpected...as when you run your hand down a row of books on a library shelf and one of them catches your finger.

Everybody else, growing up, was waiting for their Hogwarts letter. I was waiting for the Manual of wizardry, and today I found it. Turns out I'm not a wizard after all - but that's okay. In Life's Name and for Life's sake is a vow that matters anyway.

This is one of the books from the Library of Babel project, an experimental coding project based on Jorge Luis Borges' eponymous text - a theoretical library containing every possible combination of 1,310,000 Roman characters, or 410 pages of text. That works out to roughly 10⁴⁶⁷⁷ books. My very good friend @rtfmx9 asked if I wanted any specific book from the Library for my birthday, and this is what immediately came to mind. One of the pages consists of a bunch of the 'space' character, the Wizard's Oath, and a bunch more 'spaces.' In theory, there are still a whole lot more books like this one, waiting in the depths of the Library's shelves. Every book containing this page and even a single character different on any of the 409 other pages, for instance.

Some days you want to work hard on your little fanfic epics, spending hours detangling the lore and timeline and plans for stories crying in the night for an update, and some days you're sick off your rocker and just hacking a lung out while haze-blinking into the horizon as you halt reading someone else's fic summary mid-first sentence to hard left turn into a very blurry but detailed daydream about the dwarves thinking Bilbo died in the Battle of the Five Armies while Bilbo--unaware of a king and his company upending their own mountain in a fit of grief as he heals among the Men or Elves--ends up in an awkward Race to Mordor with a Sauron he is barely aware of alongside his own ironic Nine, made up of himself, Gandalf, Bard, Legolas, Tauriel, and a trio of dwarves (Dís, Gimli, Gimli's mom) plus an unexpected favorite cousin (Falco Chubb-Baggins) who all broke off from the first convoy of Blue Mountain immigrants to Erebor to go along and protect Bilbo.

Place bets now on how Thorin & Company hear of their burglar's survival and latest insanity (highest bids placed on the remaining Blue Mountain travelers passing along word vs a smarmy message from Thranduil), how quickly they shake off their shrouds of mourning and royal pseudo-widowhood, and where exactly on the path between Erebor and Mount Doom they manage to catch up to and dog pile an unwitting Hobbit.

good morning i was thinking about how the game stops referring to your wizard by name eventually(?) and thinking about how that could be connected to everyone putting this Child on a pedestal of saving the entire universe when they're probably nowhere near 18 yet and. god there's so much i could yell about but i dont have enough ask space

Aaaah yes that's a good attention to detail that you've noticed and that's an EXCEPTIONAL perspective on why that is!!! As much as I PERSONALLY will go with the idea that the YW has aged and grown physically throughout the game's timeline for various reasons there's something so METAL and heartbreaking about the fact that everyone around the YW just doesn't see them as a child anymore due to their status and their job, despite them still being so very young. That agency about them was removed from them outside of their control so now you have a 12 year old with the mind of Batman because they never had a childhood.

When even the WORLD AROUND YOU is contributing to the idea that you are no longer a child, that's gonna stick. Even though you're a teenager nobody treats you like one, you don't get to act like one, any and all notions that you are a CHILD savior is erased so now you are just a SAVIOR. At that point people aren't even treating you as an ADULT either, they're treating you as an IDEA, a CONCEPT. You are someTHING to believe in, rather than someONE. This is a very sad thing to think about! 😄

Unpopular opinion: Elena of Avalor fandom edition! Mateo isn't the sweet dorky magician the wiki (and some fans) tends to present, he is just as competitive as (of not more than) Gabe and can be really selfish and arrogant. And he never really gets called out on his flaws or misdeeds as much as the other characters.

Yes, I'm not sure if it's my contrarian hipster brain seeing he's popular within the fandom and just doing it's natural "hype backlash" as result, or what. But my overall reaction to him is "meh" at best and low-key annoyance at worst. Maybe it's just me, but I definitely feel that whenever Elena, Naomi, Gabe, Isa, or especially Esteban are in the wrong, the narrative will have an explicit, impossible to ignore "what the hell hero" moment where they learn their lesson. But when Mateo is the one at fault, he's more likely to be met with nothing more than a brief slap on the wrist--and that's assuming he's called out for his selfishness/impulsiveness/shortsightedness at all. Which he often is not.

He convince you to make a long and cute handshake with him that ended with a kiss, so if he needed a good luck charm he can do the handshake with you.

He matures up quick after he started dating you because he knows how much you dislike his behavior and attitude towards other people especially snape so he changed it and becomes better.

His parents love having you around because of the way James spoke about you and how much you make him better as a person so they always invited you to stay over with his family either during Christmas break or Easter break.

Sirius Black:

He's quite funny and loves to make you laugh no matter the occasion/mood because he loves the way you smile and laugh.

He's quite reckless and brave so he likes taking you on a spontaneous and somewhat banned date, like swimming in the black lake and making out at midnight or sneaking into the astronomy towers to go stargazing after hours.

He gives you piggyback rides or carries you around like a ragdoll when you don't feel like walking or when he just feels like holding you, he is strong after all.

He comes from a wealthy family and he'd get you expensive gifts for Christmas, Valentine's day, Birthdays, or your Anniversary, but one time he got you an expensive-looking heart-shaped and gold-colored locket with a picture of the two of you inside and you never took it off since the day you got it.

He knows how much you love food and treats so every weekend he'd take you to Honeydukes to get you whatever you like whether it's Jelly Slugs, Chocolate Frogs, or even Bertie Bott's Every-Flavour Beans, he'd buy it and share it with you while the both of you watch the sunsets in empty quidditch stands since it's nice and high.

Remus Lupin:

Writes you a love letter and brings you flowers once a week because he knows that you love his writing and the way he expresses his love for you through writing.

He likes wearing matching outfits with you on the weekends because he thought it was cute and he didn't mind wearing them.

He learned how to brush and style your hair and after learning he's able to pull your hair into a braid or a ponytail.

He's an intelligent boy so he would often take you on a study date or help you out with schoolwork every Sunday afternoon before dinner time. He also made sure to get you a cup of warm butterbeer while you both studied together.

He lets you wear his clothes, especially his hoodie, sweaters, and shirts since it looks cute and oversized on you.

Peter Pettigrew:

He's known to be a scaredy cat and hides behind powerful people to ensure his protection but with you, he stands up for you no matter how scary or powerful the person who's hurt you is he'll gladly deal with them for you.

He's the best caregiver especially when you're sick, he'd spend all his time with you and even skip class if he had to because he wants to keep you company and made sure he's there just in case you needed anything.

He saves you a seat in any of the classes you have together next to him or anytime mealtime rolls around he made sure you get the best spot and keep it occupied until you arrive inside the great hall.

He's usually kind of shy to show any sort of affection to you even if it's in private but what he loves to do is hold hands with you while walking or offer you his arm so you can wrap yours around his as you walk together.

He likes to carry your stuff for you and never asks you if you need help he just does it for example he always carries your bag/books to your next class even if he doesn't share the same class with you or take your luggage along with his once you've arrived back to Hogwarts after the summer holidays to start a new year.
