Aaahhh the Mary Sues. Such a silly way to diss what were usually teenage writers simply trying to explore the foundational stages of creating a character. There are so many popular Gary Stus in popular media (James Bond is definitely one) but men don't get called out for it the same.

I will say it took time for me to lean into writing a character who isn't just better than me in every sense of the word, and is allowed to make her own mistakes. I have to empathise with her a lot when she does some stupid shit and I'm sitting there like girl...

The key is probably to mix the stupid shit we all do on a daily basis (and judge more harshly when done by a fictional character) with real emotions and inner thoughts that would connect to most readers. Insecurities, anxiety, etc etc. But it's important to show her wanting to get out of these pitfalls of human nature, striving to do better even when she fails. She can't be perfect and smart and sassy out the gate or there's no fun watching her become a more well-rounded person.

The most important thing about an OC isn't how she's created at the start, but how she ends up at the finish line of the journey you're taking the reader along on. Don't flesh her out too much. Give her a few key traits - habits, emotional instabilities, insecurities - and then let them expand as she interacts with Aemond. Let her be human. Rolling the eyes, smirking, and sassy comebacks are all well and good, but real people don't behave like that. Sometimes, I like to put myself in the situation and realise I would never have such a put-together response because a fic writer isn't actually writing me (unless God has something to tell me about the sham of a plotline my life currently is). Once you've figured out what you'd do in a scene where you're stuck on what to write next, then bring back all you already know about your OC and modify your own response to become hers.

I didn't plan Amara at all when I put her into Burning Jasmine. My aim was to give Aegon someone that he could call his own in a way no one else in his family was. But I also knew Aegon is a dipshit. So, their first meeting is him basically yelling at her to get him more wine and stop telling him he needs a doctor, and her immediate reaction is girl fuck you, ew. Then, he softens, because the urge to be loved always comes out in the end (see here's where canon existing does help), and then I created Amara's background with the kidnapping from Lys, and how her parents raised her with love, and understood that she would see his anger as a facet of his isolation and vulnerability, not as something independent to him that he wields like a weapon.

Also my last pointer is always going to be the same but read, read, read. I would suggest contemporary books as unlike with fantasy, they're not worldbuilding, all they have are their characters. Learn from them. Get comfortable with inner monologuing for your OC that doesn't constantly revolve around Aemond, and how she is an accessory to him. She's the main character in her head, with a whole inner world of her own, and that'll be the best way to approach it.

The Journey: silly little fox fantasy xenofiction that totally doesn't contain incredibly dark themes you guys I promise. The plot revolves around a giant war that's going on, the gods are meddling with stuff but can't interfere directly, our protagonists have other struggles outside of the war that they have to deal with alongside it, one of the pov characters is the main villain and she is absolutely awful. This has existed since I was like 11.

Thyreophora: Novel about community, hope and paleontology. Nerys, the protagonist, is working under another more experienced vertebrate paleontologist in a small research lab. She's currently struggling to find her way in the world.

Pigeon thingy: Our protagonist is a dingus but the sapient ghost of a pigeon calls them a dipshit and tells them to stop being a dick.

Poetry: exactly what it sounds like lmao. I'm trying to write a collection of poems or smth.

okay this is a bit late sorry BUT here's your answers ( a bit out of order)

so Pom and Micheal met in middle school, they got put together for a school assignment and have been friends since. They met Matt in high school, they were sitting alone at lunch and Matt kinda just showed up one day and started talking to them. their dynamic is hard to describe (mostly because I cannot describe things for shit) but Matt and Pom are the biggest talkers of the group, Pom is the main planner, Micheal is off to the side not in a bad way. Its not that they talk too much or don't let him get a word in he's just quiet. He prefers to listen to a conversation more than be apart of it, just being there. Even if he doesn't look like hes paying attention he is. Just don't get him started on mushrooms, snakes, or welding, he does a complete 180 and will not shut up.

Micheal has 3 pet rats actually! I plan to draw them eventually

Matt has multiple playlists for different moods and genre's vary but his main three playlists are a bunch of circus music, the world revolving added to the same playlist over 100x, and the misc playlist with 100 songs that do not match eachothers vibe at all. some artists I think he would listen to: 100 gecs, Insane Clown Posse,and Lemon Demon

Pom has one main playlist she dumps all her favorite songs into. but its a majority death metal some artists i think he would listen to: Scene Queen, Bear Ghost, Mother Mother, Black Dresses, Korn, and Necrogoblikon

Matt, I honestly have no idea other than its mostly My Chemical Romance I did make him a playlist (wip) on a whim tho because I was bored

Okay, problems with Ross himself aside, can I just say I really hate this scene? Basically, the problem here is that the movie is trying to talk around the legitimate criticisms of the Avengers it could be making, opting instead to use Ross as a mouthpiece to whine about dipshit nothingburgers.

But the movie doesn't seem aware that it's doing that, because it plays Ross's nothingburgers with lots of gravitas and sincerity.

Like. "The Avengers should have gotten permission from the republic of Nigeria to enter their country and coordinate the operation to apprehend Hydra" is a valid point to make. The Avengers were originally formed to fight aliens, but their mission has decayed into basically being Team America: World Police. They're going after international terrorism on their own jurisdiction, without regard to state sovereignty. Absolutely. Let's have a conversation about that.

That's not the conversation Ross wants to have. The conversation Ross wants to have is, "The Avengers are reckless and people get injured or killed when they fight bad guys." That's a stupid conversation. Go to prison, Ross.

He tries to bolster this point by showing scenes of carnage from recent Avengers actions. But the casualties toll (CASUALTIES, mind you; Not even death toll, he's counting injured too) that he puts on screen are hysterically low for the sort of event taking place.

Battle of New York: 74 casualties.

Insight Helicarrier battle: 23 casualties.

Battle of Sokovia: 177 casualties.

Lagos: 26 casualties.

Holy shit. Holy shit. The sky split open and poured an endless army of alien soldiers into the most populated city in the world, and less than 100 people were even harmed? The Avengers deserve a fucking medal! That is phenomenal crisis management right there! (And don't forget that S.H.I.E.L.D. launched a nuke at the city too.)

Ross wants to talk about Hulk and Thor going AWOL. But he has no concerns with the terrorist in the room who instigated a Hulk attack on a populated city? What, does he relate? Go to prison, Ross.

And Tony backs him up because he feels guilty for Sokovia. But the movie doesn't want to talk about the fact that he made Ultron. Much like how it ignores Wanda's actual crimes in favor of fake ones it made up, it ignores Tony's crimes in favor of fake ones it made up.

Not once is it ever mentioned that Tony built Ultron and is literally responsible for everything that happened in Sokovia. Instead, the movie opts to say that all of the Avengers are at fault for Sokovia, because they were too busy having fun beating up Ultron drones to worry about the civilian casualties in their wake.

If you've seen Age of Ultron, this description of the Battle of Sokovia is amazingly wrong. Age of Ultron was made in the wake of the Man of Steel "Superman destroyed Metropolis" controversy, and it took great care to show the Avengers going out of their way to protect civilians at every turn. The whole climax revolved around getting people out of harm's way first, fighting Ultron second.

And now we're saying the Avengers as a whole are at fault for Sokovia because they were reckless assholes who didn't care about people's wellbeing, to avoid having to make the more specific and less defensible criticism that Tony is at fault for Sokovia for making Ultron in the first goddamn place. Why don't you go to prison too, Tony?

This scene just drives me up the goddamn wall. It tries to paint over the Avengers' history in huge broad strokes in order to change the conversation to something that is more easily defensible by Cap going, "We're the good guys and we shouldn't trust authority." It uses broad, stupid accusations to avoid talking about legitimate concerns with the Avengers' conduct and actual crimes committed by Wanda, Tony, and Ross who is no stranger to illegal military operations on foreign and domestic soil.

It's just. Bad. It's a bad setup and it makes me angry every time I watch it.
