actually i dont think ive posted my thoughts on ofmd s2 overall here yet have i?

ok here goes: i think it had incredibly high highs, and at some parts i genuinely enjoyed it more than i did the first season, episode 6 being peak imo. however, it had equally abysmal lows with some glaring writing-, tone- and pacing issues that all came to a head in the finale.

i once read someone say that, if you ever feel like a finale ruined the whole story, maybe you should take another look at the story. there were most likely cracks and problems all along, and the finale did nothing besides dashing the hope that these would perhaps be addressed later. very rarely do genuinely well written stories go completely off the rails in the finale and ruin the whole thing.

i think this is applicable here in some ways, SPECIFICALLY in regards to edward. good god edward was a MESS this season, and it's so sad because i loved the starting point! the kraken era was absolutely terrifying and iconic as FUCK but... they shouldn't have leaned so hard into the drama and trauma of it all. don't get me wrong, i loved that it did. it's one of my favorite parts of the season and i'm so glad we got it. but if they wanted this arc to work with the overarching plot as they wrote it, they would've had to lighten up the tone here CONSIDERABLY. had they played the kraken era for comedy then sure! edward's bad youtuber apology would've been funny. his fast redemption would've been less jarring. the lack of consequences less disturbing. but as it stands in the show, this arc is too dark to function with the later episodes.

i feel like they wanted to have their cake and eat it too here. they wanted the gritty drama of ed coming off the hinges entirely but also didn't want to deal with the aftermath of such a heavy arc in their silly pirate romcom. be that due to time constraints and budget cuts or because they were simply unwilling to, doesn't really matter in the end. the result is the same either way: a very tonally messy season with some accidentally troubling implications regarding abuse.

and mentioning troubling implications regarding abuse; izzy. my poor, poor izzy... his arc was absolutely glorious. i liked izzy the second he showed up in s1 and i was absolutely EATING this season up in that regard. and i think in this case, they genuinely did fuck it all up in the finale with that one stupid choice:

choosing to kill izzy was the DUMBEST thing they couldve done here.

ive talked about this over and over and over again. ive reblogged so many meta posts. and still i am left absolutely flabbergasted by how stupid of a decision this was. the fridging, playing at the fallen woman trope, killing the beating heart of the season and the character who delivers what is essentially a thesis statement, killing off the character whose arc is about coming to terms with his disability, having him die in edward's arms, comforting him and apologizing after an entire season of finding community and love outside of edward, the absolutely godawful pacing of it all, the extremely easy and obvious solution of just having IZZY become the new captain of the revenge to mirror s1 and hammer home how much he has developed since then in one go... i could go on. and i have. it was a stupid writing decision, completely fucked the tone and pacing of the finale and took away attention and time from things that really would've deserved a better wrap up (lucius and black pete deserved better)

now. the whole prince ricky & zheng plot line... yeah that shit sucked ass, sorry. they bit off more than they could chew here. i honestly think those are the arc words of this season:

right off the bat: i think he was good as a concept. bringing in a foil for stede who just doesn't Get It as stede does could've made for very good comedy and drama (and to be fair there is some of that). but that shit got away from them extremely quickly. nothing about how he's implemented past his first episode works, and i think this is very specifically because he's mostly played as the comic relief in his debut episode. making this completely bumbling fool, who gets his nose hacked off on his first job, the main villain of your entire season is... definitely a choice. idk. he didn't work for me at all.

ok wow mentioning shit getting away from the writers. this definitely got away from me. this was supposed to be a short lil post. well. i guess tl;dr i loved this season but jesus christ there was a lot wrong with it. if you want to hear more thoughts. ask box is open. be my guest. i have more to say so even if you dont ask i might add more to this at some point but im tired and have work tmrw.

Charlie’s Intentions

Awhile back I made a theory about why Charlie and Sev broke up(her secretly using him to try to find Lilith) and how the hotel could be a second attempt to reach out to her

Not trying to say she’s never done good things that help others or atleast tried to….but when you think of it, they’re often still to or for her benefit(for the hotel to work). Warning this goes DEEEEEPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!

Helping Sir Pentious even after the reveal(fav moments) Even after beign revealed to be a Vee spy, Charlie forgave him and let him have the chance to be a real guest….but that would be to her benefit(having more guests, especially those willing to go along with her activities). Many have pointed how quick she was to support Sir P, making Angel feel left out(I get both sides, on the one hand she def put a lot of attention towards Sir P and perhaps couldve been more supportive towards Angel like in the roleplay, but on the other hand, Angel at that time often made it VERY clear to their faces he didn’t believe in the plan or was interested beyond having a free room and going on the idea the pilot events still happened, AFTER THAT whole stunt at the terf war & News station, he’s pretty lucky Charlie didn’t just kick him out, like Vaggie probably would’ve wanted(can’t blame her though Angel def is not easy to her especially).

But that begs the question, did she let Angel stay and puts up with his behaviour as she genuinely didn’t want to give up on him, understanding redeeming him wouldn’t be easy or because….he was their ONLY client and didn’t want to risk losing that but now that there’s another and seemingly easier to work with client, ready to focus solely on him…was she just being innocently insensitive, not understanding how that hurt Angel or…was she honestly just more focused on making progress with anybody.

Was her putting Vaggie in charge of the trust activities out of a well meaning but misguided spur of the moment decision thinking they’d relate better to Vaggie as not jsut a sinner but also someone learning to trust them and vice versa…or was it to avoid screwing things up herself, as none of her past attempts seem to work a lot and figure Vaggie would have better luck as she’s able to control things, or if it didn’t work wouldn’t really cause any more damage to Vaggie’s already distant relationship with the gang. And only intervened when things were getting out of control and apologized to Vaggie as th least thign she’d want is her biggest help to go…

I don’t think we need to really get too deep into how she handled didnt go so well Ep 4. She never really thought much of Angel’s work situation and situation in general outside the hotel and the main motive for her going to Val was to get Angel more time for HER project(which wouldn’t have been so bad had it not ended how it did). During one of the sets she was advertising the hotel to a camera guy WHILE FILMING! And though the fire was an accident and careless OSHA, had she have just waited and focused on talking specifically about Angel to Val or had waited to talk with Angel when he returned, I think it’s safe to say a lot would have been different atleast. She did atleast seem, genuinely remorseful and wanted to make things right for unintentionally getting Angel hurt….or was it more about Angel being mad at her(not about making someone u care about angry at you via doing something to upset or hurt them and more about him not trusting her and potentially would reconsider being her client). Perhaps a mix of both?

Valentino-For all you know Amorcito, part of her screwed things up on purpose just so you wouldn’t try to get her to help beyond her stupid hotel 🏨 😈

Not 100% sure of the afternath(how fully aware she and the gang r of the situation, just know Val SUCKS and it’d be ideal to get him away). Did she talk to him about it after, did she ask the gang on what could be done, is she looking for ways beyond jsut the hotel to get him out, is she figuring that the best thing for her to do for Angel is to help him redeem and get into Heaven….or just focusing on her main goal, now seeing more motivation for Angel.

Was she really inspired by her father and his “dreams”, or figured by connecting to him in a way, he’d at least listen cause of his ego, being the King of Pride. She did still say “my people” not “our”.

Charlie was under the belief her dad was only in contact with her “when he was bored or needed something(not sure what bored could mean, maybe her not realizing he did want to check up on her). Didn’t call in over 5 months…whos to say she figure turn the tables. She only had gotten him involved when they were desperate and it was Vaggie who suggested his help.

Was Charlie just angry about the higher ups not knowing what gets someone into Heaven because of the potential implications of people who aren’t necessarily pure evil being damned to eternal blaze or even death because of this system….or also because she realized all the stuff she was trying to do to begin with could’ve been all for nothing, wouldn’t change things. Heck one could argue she was defending Angel from Adam because she had allowed him and the others to go to the club, perhaps wanted to give them a lil reward for the help so far and though it would’ve also kept them from being in or causing trouble(especially since she’s paying) while she and Vaggie were gone( another thing is perhaps her wanting to make up for ep 4 by letting angels friend take him and the rest out for a fun night, appease her own guilt)loss

Did she come to forgive Vaggie because she genuinely wanted to despite what she did and lying to her and that it’s part of her principles she promotes in the hotel like Rosie said(second chances) or because Rosie reminded her Vaggie’s been the one helping her throughout the story and coudlnt afford to stay angry with the war coming(Vaggie also brought weaponry too). Heck it was VAGGIE who explained things and made it clear to the gang this wasn’t their fight and had no obligation to risk themselves while Charlie ran off with Al, not even explaining what they’re doing.

I’m not trying to say Charlie’s some bad person who’s manipulating everyone. It’s clear she does have legitimate care for the gang and has had moments showing that, but you can’t deny there’s a lot that could be interpreted of having….ulterior motives. People often run by a bit of self motivation, we all need a little of that, it’s only a problem when u don’t consider how it could affect others, only focusing on your own goals and desires.

She’s not only not really thought a lot of the gang and their stuff beyond the hotel, but also def unaware how sinners are and hasn’t seem to done really solid research on humans or the concepts of redemption and rehabilitation. I don’t think she’s even asked them WHAT THEY DID TO COME DOWN TO HELL! She def didn’t seem all too interested in Missy mentioning how she knew Al back when he was alive. She also didn’t give her the same kinda introducing she did with Sir P. Granted she was busy with her dad but you’d think she’d have been atleast more interested.

Could one of the reasons that her methods and activities are kinda childish just simply because she’s very sheltered and naive… or that’s she’s simply scratching the surface to make the sinners seem good enough for Heaven so news will spread and Lilith…for all we know the day she helped Vaggie could…be more than meets the eye. Was she already out with the intent of trying to help sinners(her moms people) from the extermination or was there something else…(I like to imagine she was trying to help sinners💖)

Is her heart completely in the right place and just goes about things the wrong way…or could even her good intentions have an under layer of selfishness she doesn’t even realize that compromises the hotel’s goal of helping and healing souls. If this could be the case, could this reflection help Charlie grow and learn how to help sinners, being able to properly connect with them….or could this realization drive a genuine wedge between her and everyone

I kind of want to hear your thoughts wrt how anya couldve been handled better. Do you think the pregnancy part shouldve just not been there in the first place? I cant think of any ending for her that is less gruesome that doesnt also change many aspects of all the later parts of the game. And also in general i just think you have interesting takes on the game and i wanna hear more

Good question and i will provide my thoughts under the cut. Listless unfiltered stuff tho Im so out of it right now but im chilling.

As a conclusion of all that precedes it I agree, the ending is properly gruesome and its hard to say it should've been done any other way. If we're being faithful to the story and her character as-is i'd say less so change the major events and moreso change the way they're delivered and slip in more respectful characterization of anya here and there through fleshing out her life and personal motivations, even if it's just hints of it

However unless they really really did a crazy good job i probably still wouldnt like it. But that's like, the unfortunate domino effect of writing a character like her, i feel that her character/place in the story is misogynistic on a pretty fundamental level and eliminating that would require restructuring things about her character/the story. But idk, who's to say they couldnt have.

Its complicated because theres all these different layers of narrative decisions being made that influence other shit and the more fundamental of a choice you change, the greater differences there will be down the road. Its butterfly effect shit. Like sometimes i think about this in my own projects. I think about like, what if while developing my own game, i'd made the 2 main characters completely different people? What if they were fucking like, Kevin and Trent, and id gone down the whole pipeline of fleshing out their characters and actually made them genuinely good. If thats what I made and thats what everyone was used to and then I randomly replaced them with Neal and Jack and the themes associated with them, people would be like. Thats wrong why the fuck did you do that. You ruined the themes bro. But the same is true of the other way around. You have to ask: is what's in front of me truly the best version it could have possibly been, or could it have been any number of things, and I'm just attached to what's right in front of me?

Its not to say you cant write about misogyny or sexual assault, or that there aren't people with experiences like Anya and you can't write about them. It's more asking like, out of all of the routes they couldve gone with wrt having any female characters whatsoever why did they choose this one specifically. If they had from the get-go written a bit of a different character with different themes and went down that whole road, no pregnancy or whatever but some other shit more impactful for what was there, they could have potentially written something equally or more powerful, just tackling a different vein of subject matters.

Like not saying at all this is what they should've written, I think its kind of lame, this is just a random ass example. But what if the conflict between Anya and Jimmy was them previously being like, rivals for the same position at their job, and likely due to misogyny in the system Jimmy ended up getting it instead of her. Anya is essentially in the same position of inferiority under Jimmy that Jimmy is under Curly and while Jimmy is obsessed with this narrative of him not getting what he deserves and lashes out, Anya is forced to grin and bear it, and their characters are meant to call attention to the gap in acceptable behaviors and entitlement that is created by patriarchal society. Idk. I think theres already hints of that and its way less emotionally impactful than whats there rn but the point is like, it still could've been well executed, and if thats what was there, people wouldnt be asking like "wow this sucks ass i really wish anya had gotten sexually assualted instead" LOL do you know wha ti mean.

I dont even know what my point is right now but idk I guess i dont have a good answer for what is the best thing they couldve done differently. I can only speak for my own preferences and honestly I dont write about this subject matter at all. Like ill be honest the specific subject of women being abused/assaulted makes me so upset i dont want to put even a fraction of an ounce of that into the world period, so i just dont write about it, my mind always goes to women dealing with other kinds of conflicts instead. And I generally tend to write more about things like microaggressions and the complexities of relationships rather than unbelievable injustices without relief. I lay a lot of respect on my characters, when horrible things happen to them I offset the events into the realm of neutrality by affording them things like privacy and moments of calm and monotony. I like writing like this and i think its good but its certainly somewhat informed by me living a privileged lifestyle. So yknow who am i to say what experiences you should write about.

Well i just looked it up and it seems like the main developers on the game are both men so im gonna say actually yeah Methinks they should've just straight up written something else. OHHH boy. okay, i know the og song is about two lovers doing the silly and the father of the girl killing the guy and then the girl goes after her dad but look.

lets say the lovers are the black lamb and the white lambs. yes im using his story again because theres no way in hell that story wasnt somehow related to him.

the white lambs got 'shot' aka dragged into the shepards game, slaughtered one by one. all while the black lamb (scar) got the blame. ill bet the people tried to kill him but he made it out alive and then he obviously eventually joined the fractsidus.

hayloft is the white lambs here (yes again. just bear with me). once the shepard ran out of lambs he left, on his way to find a new group excepttttt

scars had enough.

the shepard took away his family from him, his people/lambs. therefore 'eye for an eye, a leg for a leg' but it wasnt enough killing the shepard. he couldnt let something like that again (so much rage in him) so now he has this whole extreme and crazy ideology of how the world could be better, how he could make it better.

HOW EPITHETS WORK:

BASICALLY ive come to the conclusion that depending on how general or specific a word is when it comes to an Epithet, the more 'powers' you have (which ive deducted is part of the creativity portion of the epithet reveal card)

For example, if you had an Epithet thats very specific to one thing, like Blizzard, Barrier, etc, you can only do that one thing and thats your whole deal. But if the word is way more general, like Winter, Protection, etc, the more the person can do.

I also dont think hyphenated words count for Epithets, since its technically a 2 in 1? Which I would say isnt fair, but then again Zora is super fucking op for no reason. But I do doubt that someone could get Immortality as their epithet.

I think in the lore you're born with your Epithet, but the way the "word tied to your soul" thing works is kind of like a Witch's bile sac in TOW (with the sac being the word you get your magic from)

FOR THE EPITHET REVEAL CARDS:

I've done a fair share of thinking and eventually came to a few conclusions that all depend on both DND stats and common sense

Proficiency: Strength, Molly made a comment abt Mera and Indus having REALLY high Proficiency, Id i were to look at this from a dnd perspective, Proficiency is a bonus to one skill, which doesn't exactly make sense in the context

Stamina: How long you can last in battle, this just feels obvious tbh

Creativity: I'm torn on this one, cuz I'm thinking its either how many moves a person with an epithet can have OR how interesting/how much thought is put into their movesets. But im leaning more towards the second option since my first theory i technically disproved myself

ERASER CUFFS:

Ok im gonna be honest, the whole way Eraser cuffs work is stupid. Just.... forgetting the Epithet? That raises more questions then answers for me, the ending of episode 7 shouldnt have been possible considering what couldve happened in episode 5 (when Mera and Indus got arrested)

And how does Percy remember her Epithet stamina??? Look, I understand RAMSEY remembering HER Epithet, but I think I have a better idea;

Basically, the cuffs click onto your wrists (feels like a spike color) and it locks off your Epithet until the cuffs come off. After that its a few minute delay to get your Epithet flow back, since its connected to your heart and normally body parts take a while to get blood circulation if cut off, Epithet circulation is gonna be like that too.

"BUT NOAH!!! IF THATS YOUR LOGICAL REASONING WHAT ABT THE ARSENE AMULET?"

For me; it'd work in a similar way, its just that when the cuffs are removed your Epithet comes back. In the case of the Arsene amulet, I say an Epithet user gets their cool powers sucked out from the chest area (Mera did that with Slyvie in ep 4) and then the sac, and the word in it just- schwoop! Gone!

Of course, because of plot, you can get it back. But I have a feeling it has a limit on how many Epithets it can hold before it expells yours. And also before your body just- straight up deflates/gives out from all the Epithets. Pretty sure you can only handle ONE considering it's a ONE WORD ABILITY!!!!!!!

finished watching supernatural s1-15 in 3 months! here are my opinions on the finale!

(warning: probably unintelligible, and very ranty) (+ obvious spoiler warning)

episode 18 was fuckin emaculate. genuinly. it was amazing. the one thing i didnt like about it was how it jumped about, same with 19.( i dont blame them for it tho, it makes sense with the story, i just didnt really love it.) 19 was good for the most part and served as a decent ending but was missing castiel and eileen (mention + presence) which sucked but what can you expect yk,,

episode 20. i have. so many issues with episode 20. WHY DID THEY EVEN????? LIKE TWO MENTIONS OF CAS, NO MENTION OF EILEEN, DEAN FUCKING DIEING, SAMS WIG, ???HEAVEN BEING LACKLUSTER???? it was so. just disappointing. cuz it could've been great. the end part of 20 was the only good part (jared and jensen signing off of the show). the show should've ended on 19 tbh. thats how im seeing it anyway. in my mind thats where it ended, but like, with cas and eileen back.

what i really disliked:

deans death. im pretty sure everyone hated that. and the whole like thing of him dying was really,, sorta,, weird? like; why did it go on so long?? did it happen bc he doesnt have god given plot armor anymore or was it just cuz?did jack see it? how did he feel about it? did he care or did he be all omniscient because he became god?? how did he survive that long? logistically? there was a fucking rusty rebar thing IN HIS SPINE (or like RIGHT NEXT TO IT??). WOULD THAT NOT?? PARALYZE?? OR WORSE???. and, im sorry, but i hated the forehead touch. it felt weird man. i get that they were close but,, not that close? even when they were more unhealthily codependent they wouldn't have done that. i think so anyway. i dunno. also. DEAN HAS SHOWN MULTIPLE TIMES AND IM SURE THE WRITERS WERE OVERTLY AWARE THAT DEAN DID NOT WANT TO DIE ON THE JOB. HE WANTED TO RETIRE WITH SAM AND CAS. ALWAYS WANTED THAT. he often said shit like "we're gonna die on the job, draw the short stick, thats just how it is, how its gonna end for us." (mixing quotes from the top of my head so, not exact) which he clearly thought would happen because pessimism but he NEVER wanted that. for HIMSELF or SAM. dean dying in this episode IS A CRITICAL DISSERVICE TO HIS CHARACTER.

sams mystery wife and (non mystery) child. BLURRY FACE WIFE. WHY IS SHE. WHY. also- how did he recover (seemingly) so quickly? i mean- if he really believed dean was gone FOREVER. when death hasnt meant forever in forever, how would he be so okay? idk. also, idk why, but sam having a kid seems very bizzare. could just be me. also. where tf is eileen. is she the blurry face wife? why would they do that if yes? (could be a load or reasons, either way they couldve like, said it was eileen, if it was supposed to,, idk,,,)

one or two mentions of castiel. did the writers just forget his CHARACTER IMPORTANCE?!?!? HES SO IMPORTANT TO THE STORY??? HE GRIPPED DEAN TIGHT AND RAISED HIM FROM PERDITION. HE LOVED DEAN. DEAN (INARGUABLY) LOVED HIM BACK. he (castiel) deserved SO. much better. my friend who has watched spn since she was a baby AGREES WITH ME. i GRRR I GRR I GRRR!!!! cas not being in this episode is such an aggravating disservice to his character. he deserved more. the fans deserved more.

max is the worst. i know pahkitew's whole thing is dumb 'gimmick' characters but max's gimmick makes me SO angry. not even because its a bad gimmick, in fact i'd say its one of the better ideas. some loser dude who thinks hes an evil genuis but is actually a pathethic dumbass? that idea could be done SO well and it could be hilarious. but no. we got shitty grape head max whos not funny, not likeable, stays around WAY too long, and just makes things miserable for everyone around him.

the fact that characters like topher and ella got booted before MAX makes me so mad. they were funny and couldve had cool character arcs but NOOO we need max around so he can be unfunny and annoying!!! fuck fleshing out our actually good characters!!

he messes things up for his team SO often yet over and over again he's not voted off for some stupid ass reason. scarlett, who couldve been such a great character, is dragged down by max's shittyness cuz the writers dont let her do ANYTHING without max.

his design sucks ass. what is he WEARING. why does he have purple hair????? why is his neck so wide?????? he DOESNT LOOK LIKE A TOTAL DRAMA CHARACTER. he looks completely out of place surrounded by the other characters.

overall i hate that ugly little abomination and i want fresh tv to make a public apology for every bringing that thing into existence.

teruteru’s execution could have been so much better. like, his is similar to mikans, in that it’s more comedic than serious. i can kind of see why it would be terrifying in universe, even with the silly concept, but ive seen basically every let’s player laugh about it, and it didnt hit the same as leon’s or kaede’s for me.

to be completely honest, most of the executions in sdr2 are kinda lackluster, which sucks because there’s so many possibilities for cool deaths. the only ones that really affected me were gundham’s and chiaki’s, and peko’s was interesting because fuyuhiko leapt in to save her, which is the only time that happens in basically the whole franchise.

anyway, i think mikan and teruteru suffer the most from bad executions. ive seen so many better rewrites of mikan’s, and i would have given anything to see them really, truly lean in to the whole medical theme instead of fanservice. i just think sdr2 in general could be done so much better, especially since it’s got such an interesting concept and fun characters. i just feel some type of way about it.

another rant: hey guess who's back!

was and am still going through some hyperfixation moments but persona5 will always stands strong for some reason?? no clue what sorta chokehold that franchise has on me but i homebrewed our old 3ds and now im playing q2 on it (rando side note but i might get my own computer soon!) its all fun and games.... a bit but i was playing through some of it and now i have things to say! more shit to talk, how exciting

i should be doing my homework yes, but i find it interesting the clash of games because each persona game is literally so different and they are all so of the time. persona as a franchise taught me that video games are rly nothing special and the person franchise is like the least of that like all the games are just what everyone else is doing at the time even from the first one ToT but i think the 90s cunt that the personas serve in the first 2games couldve been such a staple for the later games and no, the chokehold of being trendy and relevant and like..."relatable"... very embarrassing so again, its interesting to see those all clash. i love persona 3 a lot because i genuinely believe that out of all the persona games, that one is truly the best. i havent seen the 1st one yet and i will never in my life ever say persona 4 as it is objectively not the best one but i think the 3rd part just has the best ending and the best sense of everything all the games offer and offered afterwards in one and i appreciated it alot for that and it was such a beautiful ending like when i finished it, it was such an experience i truly felt i could move on from how disappointed i honestly was with the fifth part but to further my point, i love the way they summoned personas in the third part even if it was uhm. violent. i think it had a charm and such a sense of uniqueness and it brought up a lot of bigger questions about how we view ourselves, our "personas" and the way they get affected by society which all play into the people we are and become and all that.

i think one reason i rly hate the fourth game is because of just that. the game talks about the person you "truly are" or whatever by literally feeding into societal norms and pushing the made up "laws" that are placed on human emotions that are so vast and complex to even have one think about. its so ridiculous and not that persona3 really does a better job at that either but i think the whole gun thing and the implications/substance that could be dissected within that is again, what gives it its charm. for example, shinjiro and strega's story was there to introduce how difficult it was to control one's persona, that you were practically being held hostage and it almost was like a separate entity within oneself. now, i dont personally like that all that much because again, its still you and the way the game handles it feels very action movie early 00s were the plots always just. divert completely somehow but again, the implications are what save it. i know shinjiro's storyline was nothing of that sort at all but all the scenes with mitsuru and akihiko and even ken bring in such a different perspective. we see this emo loner (lol) who basically does drugs to control all the crap thats going on inside of him and we see the way these two smart kids who've always had it relatively easy in that aspect pressure him and handle what he goes through all in the wrong ways. it feels almost like an allegory for growing up, pretty straightforward but i feel like that sense of realness is what the rest lacked. no more queerbait, no more fan service, yea theres quite a lot of it in persona3 definitely but hey, we all know high school sucks and a lot of it... isnt pretty. the whole idea that you need to find a way to handle the mental and control that "being" inside of you is done soo much better than anything in persona5

i know that technically, the way they handle the personas in persona5 is much better with the whole outfit thing and even with anything and everything, i think the way they handled akechi's personality thing was pretty well considering.. many things ToT but it just feels so too the nose, nothing about it feels special. it doesnt give us suicide allegories (lmao) it doesnt give us any genuine stories. i feel like even though so many of the individual character plotlines are so heavy, like ann's (hello??) and akechi's are so real and terrifying in a way that that happens to so many people constantly, just all of them really and none of them ever really make you feel like something deep for them, yk what i mean? i cried so much for ken and shinjiro, it was soo embarrassing but it made you feel so much for ken, even if that whole situation was very unrealistic, i think the way they handled it in the beginning was wonderful. nobody ever really said anything or suspected much but ken was going through so much all at that time, shinjiro was always there for him but never said anything either and of course, with nothing to stop it, time took its course and things ended the way they did. as tragic as it was, those were the consequences that followed him through the cracks of no confrontation. even to aigis dealing with her robotic brain lol and her lack of emotion, lack of humanity towards the world. such an unrealistic situation but the implications made it what it was, aigis is such a staple for us neurodivergent folks and i know autistic people love her lol. her character meant so much to me because i related so much to her rather than i did with futaba, who is actually a human being

when they unlock their personas, you dont see struggle, you dont see will. its tough, having to accept who you are and continue to brace through it. even being shot a bullet to the head, yukari for example, was still scared to accept herself even if she knew what life had in store for it. she didnt want to relive that trauma with her father and know the truth but she knew that she had to if she wanted to move forward and be the better person. like idk it just means so much more. again, you dont see that same struggle and the costumes dont even reflect who they really are and even if it could, you would never know. mind you i never finished any of the confidants but damn i managed to learn so much of the p3 characters and connect with them only through my first playthrough and that says enough. even doing ryuji's confidant (which i love btw omg) i slowly started to let go of that love for him and his story with the dirt they pay him afterwards its just so lazy. i love that concept from the 3rd game, even the way they handled arcs in p2 was better, i dont like they way they acted about the personas but i feel like that combination into the 3rd part that focused on all aspects was something that DEFINITELY shouldve been kept and NOT turned into whatever persona4 was good lord!

re what you said about the s4 pacing. LITERALLY i wrote that whole other post as an answer to another ask i got about how the chosen's storyline really sucks in some aspects and i said the pacing is going to be incredibly off for season 4

okay first of all. there's a huge timeline issue in season 3 concerning the holidays and how much time passes since season 1, i was gonna make a whole other post about all the timeline inconsistencies but i didnt get around to doing it (i probably should). but like at this point it has been one year minimum since s1, realistically it should be three years if the end of season 4 is palm sunday. then like ??? theyre gonna spend the entirety of s5 on ONE week? and for fucking what. i thought they wanted a "bingeable" proper show with pacing and everything, why would they zero in on that

but anyways about ramah. first of all im 99% sure it's because her actress has schedule conflicts and likely wants to drop out of the show (that's why she mysteriously left to go talk to her dad in season 3). but also it's kind of obvious that they're using her death as character development for thomas for the rest of the series (which is gonna be like 2 weeks maximum over 3 seasons anyway. unless they continue onto acts but that poses another huge pacing problem.) which is pissing me off like?? i had the same reaction when tamar was acting weird for like one (1) episode and then she told mary everything and just left. why would you not give them proper character development established over a long period of time and just confine it to singular episodes like that. im pretty sure tamar's backstory won't be brought up again lmao. also ramah doesn't really have much of a personality (which sucks because i got the impression she was a bit of a rich daddy's girl and there was potential for character exploration) and her character hasn't even been that established so like... partially it's easy to kill her but on the other hand, it isn't as emotional especially bc she wasn't even here the last season.

also remember how in the other post i was like why are they literally giving consistent character arcs and emotional plot for matthew, mary, simon & eden, and james & john but theyre basically forgetting everybody else exists. yeah like james just fucking launches himself at someone and gets knocked out in season 4 which is great but how long are they going to be just keep throwing new arcs for the main cast and keep ignoring thaddeus' existence. btw i watched a clip of That Scene in s4 (i didnt realize what it was when i was watching it lmao) with thaddeus and james and they're basically asking jesus why he's talking about dying. so thaddeus stays personalityless while big james is over there getting concussions #maincharacter. im not saying that scene w/jesus isnt necessary but im saying its thad's big scene and it is once again about Not thaddeus

lets talk signless first. essentially, he is an iteration of kankri vantas (literal clone of him), who grew up under different circumstances, and throughout his life inspired a whole movement against the alternian empire and, years later, a revolution lead by the summoner. i wanna establish that alpha kankri is a different character than signless in the story, but not a different person, and - was the environment he grew up to be different - he wouldve become that guy. all the building blocks are there, in his core personality, but the outcomes couldntve been different.

hes a very motivated and driven person, and will stand up against perceived injustices in the world. signless saw through his visions how the world he was brought into couldve been, and hed done everything in his power to make that dream reality, even if he would never live to see the fruit of his work come to be.

but hes also so. goddamn. stubborn. if he deems something or someone worthy of defiance, he wont stop doing it. in signless' case, he didnt stop preaching about the better world even when his movement caught the attention of the ruling class and he got a target on his back. he literally died for the cause. mans not backing off even under the threat of losing his life.

now, i mentioned he wont stop defying someone, and there are two major characters he does that to the most, which are porrim and signless. and we will come back to signless in a moment because jesus christ.

i find kankris and porrims relationship so endearing and so fascinating because shes his friend, but she is also his mom in the post-scratch timeline, and it shows. his rebellious streak against the perceived injustices is laser-focused on anything porrim does or says because shes both his friend, and she also acts like his mother. he is forever stuck in an endless angsty teen-rebellion phase against this perceived authority figure - the parent/guardian - and it ranges from off-handedly insulting her for being promiscuous (he literally calls her the village two-wheel device, the little shit) to straight-up refusing to take into consideration any of her concerns regarding the oppression woman faced on both beforus and alternia.

and she calls him out on it! she knows he chose her as a target of his contrariness solely because he perceives her as someone with authority over himself and its unfair. its such a non-issue, it locks him into this bubble of stagnation, which makes him refuse to evaluate his biases and grow as a person. and she knows it, and its infuriating, because she knows he can do better, be better than this, but hes digging his feet into the ground for the sake of defying his mom-figure. and it sucks.

(for the record, i dont think its the only reason kankri is like that. it might be one of the reasons, but there are wayy more things that overlapped for him to become who he is as we see him in openbound)

now onto signless and hoo boy. you cant have a vantas without complicated and antagonistic feelings regarding his past and future and alternate selves, can you. hes so salty about the whole signless deal, and its literally in his first appearence when he ambushes karkat. though he sees his alternate selves goals of creating a world without the bloodcaste system virtuous, he still calls his methods problematic, the whole movement violent, and his dying word unpleasant. then he immidately explains how he prefers to handle the societal issues, clearly putting his method as better, cause hes a self-righteous prick like that.

i bring up signless so much because i truly believe that kankri sees him as a sort of authority figure over himself, and he haates him. hes not escaping that vantas-flavoured self-loathing and inferiority complex against his other iterations. hes so against signless' methods he refuses to consider the why, and dismisses it completely. its the contradiction of being envious of his own accomplishments in the different universe and moral hubris of thinking hes better in his methods, and he manages to somehow be both at the same time. because, at the end of the day, signless did manage to achieve what he never could - bring people together to fight for a worthy cause. and it stings.

but he wont change, as thatd mean hed have to reflect on his own actions and his way of thinking. perceiving his other self as someone to rebel against, hes doing to signless the same he does to porrim - straight-up dismissing any issues they bring up. hed much rather bully his disabled friend for using disability aid he needs to function, because thats a bad rep for other disabled people who dont need that help. as any self-righteous self-important asshole would i fucking guess.

kankri vantas is a rebel at heart but his defiance is against the wrong people and wrong causes and its both so interesting but also SO fucking infuriating

another one is always cschlatt related cause no one understands he wasnt just some vitriolic hateful tyrant, he did have care in some people like cfundy, he had the talk and praised him. he had some care he jsut was very much also a bad person too, and the whole thing of villainising addicts and alcoholics really fucking sucks, like he has complexity its just been simplified in everyone elses eyes who werent in the manberg cabinet

Mario movie. Wahoo! I liked it. It perfectly met my middling expectations.

By no means a revolutionary or epic film, it's just what I wanted. A very pretty and cute romp through the Super Mario world. I'm easily entertained by little references and jingles from all across the games. My most hype moment was seeing King Bob-omb at the wedding, literally pumping my arm in the theater, it's just so great to see that guy -- wish he'd be included in a game. But noticing things like Bob-omb Battlefield, the Wreckers Crew references, Punch-Out pizzeria, even just walking through the sandland of Odyssey, it's all so pretty and smooth. If there was an annoying or overbearing reference, I don't even remember it, I was smiling through the whole movie.

Performance wise yeah the Pratt choice absolutely sucks but not in an offensive way. It's passable enough to get through the movie, I wish he had more energy and that perhaps also the script simply allowed him more energy. Idk why they went with such a downtrodden Mario, I guess because IT'SA THE MOVIE so it has to be moody like this. Uhg more on that later. I felt everyone else was fine, though nothing beats the original voices, I guess I do have to admit that since they went with such a generic-movie tone, it WOULD be pretty silly to hear the original cast acting so theatrical/serious, if that makes sense. Uh yeah and obviously Jack Black Bowser is a huge standout, carries everyone else, any scene with Bowser brings out the best from the other characters. I really hope that in a potential sequel, they include Bowser on the hero's team, to face off a bigger threat like........ Wario. Underrated shotouts to the voice of Kamek and the Blue-Shell Koopa, I actually wish we had more time to see them on their own. Blue-Shell Koopa in particular had a lot of potential, shame he literally fucking dies I guess. Legit I'd like to even see him sneak his way into Mario Kart as a real character -- why the fuck not? He definitely feels like he belongs, and the Bowser-faction needs a more competent figure in their ranks.

Yeah the plot, a lot of weird decisions that I feel are just so capital-m Movie. Not the worst way they could have done things but it begs so many questions, opens up so much weird lore that gets overlooked. Like fucking Mario's family, holy spaghetti, theyre just gonna heap that onto us. It's so weird to see Mario in a "disappointing my dad" plot, especially when it's so shitty, like yeah whoops your dad really did see you as a disappointment, sincerely, up until you became a literal super hero and impressed him. I really think it should've been more about Mario's self, and his feeling of inadequacy in the plumbing business, or feeling like he doesn't belong the way he is, or he's underappreciated by his community -- real plumber things! I do love Luigi's presence in this, I love his weight on emotions with feeling like he's dragging Mario down and Mario feeling the same for him. God I love these brothers and their bond, it was a PERFECT idea separating these two and making that the driving force, to reunite them. I loved the Super Star scene, that first kick from Bowser where they're untouched, OOMPH, I love shit like that. That final fight was definitely satisfying, I guess I only wish we saw Bowser rampaging more -- such a missed moment to not just give him a Super Mushroom and let him become big, or let him feast on power-ups to become crazy powerful, just to fall to the Star. Lots of ways the climax couldve been much better overall, but still fun enough.

Most disappointing aspects... First and foremost, how dare they tease us with Pauline at the beginning, and then don't even bring her back for the conclusion. How hard would it have been to have her be there in the crowd congratulating the Mario Bros, maybe she gives them a sash or the key to the city lmao. Something!! Uh otherwise I feel like Toad is the awkward uninvited friend for a whole road trip, really didn't add anything, had no character arc, felt like a waste of time. I like that Toad is HERE, because yeah, it's Toad! But this was a real boring take. Oh and wtf, where's Toadsworth? Who the fuck is this not-Toadsworth? Little things like this peeve me the most because it's like, what? You have a little guy for this exact role already. Bring him in, he wants to be in the movie! The characters of Mario are so iconic, it's most disappointing to see the places they couldve been, but just... weren't. I guess they didnt want to hire that many celebrity voice actors hahahahsdnbahdnn ahahhhhh AAAAA

Make a sequel, please, I feel like it'd be so much better being able to write its own identity and not be so bound to being the First Movie. Make Wario the main villain, he'd be a fantastic threat and personality to follow-up with, he'd be perfect for animation. Include Princess Daisy and have her use a Mega Mushroom, that's important. Rosalina can swoop in as well, might as make it so there's a Coalition of Princesses or Royalty to help raise the stakes. The sequel writes itself so I really hope it gets it, again I have no high expectations for any Mario movie, but I love Mario and seeing him come to life from the hands of a capable studio is fantastic for me.

i will say though, the 'romance' was handled better than i expected, for the most part. with the exception of like one filler chapter, it never felt like a 'real' relationship at any any point. i dont know what kind of mass hysteria hit this website when this was big but those dudes were NOT in love. it was very clearly a toxic dependence thing (and at times, perhaps co-dependence) the entire time. every word that man said was very obviously hollow. everything had clear motivation behind it.

i still think it focused too much on that tho. like it was sort of genre-confused for a large chunk in the middle and that really threw the whole thing off imo. it sucked shit as a romance, it sucked shit as an erotica, it was halfway decent as a psychological/thriller. but it put too many eggs in the damn romance basket and spoiled something that couldve been fascinating. couldve been my all time fav. it was just supremely underwhelming and disappointing overall. i am done posting about this now i hope. i fucking hope.

ugh my brain is still throwing a fit about how unsatisfying the end of fucking killing stalking was. i dont even know what WOULD have been a satisfying conclusion to... all of that. But it was not what we got.
