I sat with my pen in my hand, trying to think up the worst reason a person could have for killing another person, and that’s what came to mind.
- Johnny Cash
This is how Cash explained how he came up with the line ‘But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die’ in his iconic song ‘Fulsom Prison Blues’.
In 1953, Johnny Cash recorded ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ and two years later included it on his album Johnny Cash and his Hot and Blue Guitar! Cash was inspired to write the song after seeing the 1951 movie Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison while serving in West Germany with the United States Air Force at Landsberg in Bavaria. The location, incidentally, of another famous gaol and where Adolf Hitler wrote Mein Kampf when he was incarcerated after the Munich Beer Hall Putsch in 1924. After the war it was re-named War Criminal Prison No. 1 and kept war criminals convicted at the Nuremberg trials.
Folsom Prison Blues cleverly combined two folk idioms - the train song and the prison song. For decades Cash nearly always opened his gigs with Folsom Prison Blues after greeting the audience with the same introduction each time: “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash,”. On 13th January 1968, Johnny Cash and June Carter, the Statler Brothers, the Tennessee Three, with Carl Perkins on guitar, recorded a live version of the song before the prisoners of Folsom State Prison, Folsom, California. The performances - one in the morning, another in the afternoon - can be heard on the album Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison.

My thoughts are consumed by the concept of Muppet Pride and Prejudice. I just can't decide on who Kermit would be. Main character rule would cast him as Darcy but..he really is not the type. Neither is Lizzie the perfect Miss Piggy.
Miss Piggy as Mrs Bennett though would be divine. Kermit could be Mr Bingley possibly? Sam the Eagle with a dashing bonnet would be an elegant Lady C. in my opinion.
Pepe the King Prawn could be Mr Collins, stressing the King in his name (Mr King Co-llins would be sth!) ad nauseam.
Mr Bennett coudl be palyed by Waldorf and Statler- one being the father one his brother, constantly forgetting who is actually the husband and father and who is only visiting cause they have different priorities and books to complain about.
Rizzo as the wild and suave Wickham coudl be entertaining.
But Lizzie and Darcy? They should be the only humans in the movie think. Both lack the inherent muppettness.

A Christmas Carol Holiday Season: "The Muppet Christmas Carol" (1992 film)
We now reach the Christmas Carol that holds the most nostalgia for me, and for countless other children of the '90s and the 2000s. It was the first Christmas Carol I ever saw, and I've watched it every holiday season since I was five years old. As the Muppets' first feature film after their creator Jim Henson's death in 1990, it was produced with no certainty of success, but it soon established itself as a true Christmas classic.
In a quirky version of Victorian London where humans and Muppets interact freely, Michael Caine stars as a Scrooge surround by familiar Muppet faces. Chief among them are Kermit the Frog as Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as his wife Emily, Statler and Waldorf as ghostly brothers Jacob and Robert Marley (both suffering for their sins as Jacob traditionally does alone), Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker as the two charitable gentlemen, Fozzie Bear as "Fozziwig," and Kermit's nephew Robin the Frog as Tiny Tim. Meanwhile, the Great Gonzo appears as Charles Dickens, who narrates the story using much of the text from the original book, with Rizzo the Rat, "as himself," in the role of his beleaguered, sarcastic sidekick.
As for the Ghosts of Christmas, all three are visually striking original puppet figures. The Ghost of Christmas Past (voice of Jessica Fox) is an ethereal little girl who floats in midair, the Ghost of Christmas Present (voice of Jerry Nelson) is a jolly size-shifter with a Muppet-like face, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is an eight-foot tall specter whose hood gapes open to reveal no face inside.
Much like Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol thirty years earlier, this film avoids the temptation to turn the story into a parody just because it stars pre-existing characters. Not that there isn't plenty of hilarious Muppet comedy: there is, especially from Gonzo/Dickens and Rizzo in their slapstick-filled, semi-interactive narrator roles. But the heart of the Carol is taken seriously, and Dickens's scenes of fear, sadness, and heartwarming tenderness are all given their due emotional weight. This is largely thanks to the excellent performance of Michael Caine: he interacts with his puppet co-stars as if they were Shakespearean actors, and his Scrooge is fully human, both in his initial meanness and in his vulnerability and ultimate warmth. The Muppet performers are all outstanding too, in both comic and serious moments, and charming, atmospheric scenery, camerawork, and surprisingly authentic 19th century costumes enhance the film's quality further. Like most Muppet movies, this is also a musical, and the songs by Paul Williams – "Scrooge," "One More Sleep Till Christmas," "Marley and Marley," "When Love is Gone," "It Feels Like Christmas," "Bless Us All" and "Thankful Heart" – and score by Miles Goodman are full of charm and emotion.
The 1951 and 1984 films with Alastair Sim and George C. Scott might be technically the two best screen versions of A Christmas Carol, but this version is closest to my heart, and with very good reason.

Let's Talk Inspirations
What inspires you to write? Is it an amazing story you just have to share with the world? Is it a desire to create something that sticks with the audience? Something that entertains, informs, or persuades even if that isn't its primary purpose? Is it to have to have something personal that you can look back on with pride knowing that you created something in spite of the difficulties? Do you just write for fun? Do you write because it's a good way to pass the time?
Furthermore, what inspired you to write, and what work do you wear on your sleeve as you create?
This is what I'm hoping to discuss today. I'm thinking it'll help us all get to know each other and maybe help us bond over some common interests. I'll start.
So, I've always been a big media junkie. Sure, I love animals and nature, doing things with my hands, certain aspects of certain sports (like baseball card collecting), and history, but my earliest memories are sitting in front of that darn television watching PBS Kids, Nick Jr., Disney Jr., and what might of been my favorite, PBS Kids Sprout.
My family also owned a few Golden Era, Bronze Age, and Renaissance Disney films that I'd watch over and over again. I loved Bambi, Dumbo, The Fox and the Hound, and especially The Lion King. My first memory is actually seeing The Lion King in theaters when it rereleased in 2010. I loved animation from the moment I saw it, and for a while, I refused to watch anything live action.
Starting in early elementary school, I started watching The Simpsons, as well as shows like Spongebob Squarepants, both of which would enrapture me in different ways. Aside from those shows, some childhood cartoons that influenced me were Franklin, The Minimighty Kids, Oswald, Pajanimals, and Little Bear. I honestly don't watch television shows or movies anymore unless I'm looking into a genre or want to revisit my boyhood, but those shows stick out in my mind.
(Side note: I know Minimighty Kids is a bit of an outlier, but that show influenced a spinoff comic to my longest running series, Stateside, so I thought it deserved a mention.)
A different revolution would happen around kindergarten, though. I started reading. Starting with Go, Dog, Go, I proceeded to eat up book after book. I was reading at 5th grade level by 1st or 2nd grade, and by 5th grade, I was reading at a high school level. Books opened up such an amazing world for me. Some favorite books of mine include Call of the Wild, Animal Farm, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Wayside.
But reading opened another world. That of comics. I was never very big on superheroes, but I loved newspaper comics. My dad gave me his copy of The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes and sealed my fate as a comic nut. My favorite comic series are Beetle Bailey, Garfield, and of course, Calvin and Hobbes. I also own several single volumes of comics that I've loved, but simply don't know enough about to truly call a favorite. Besides, who here cares about Belvedere?
The latest discovery of mine was music. I've never been very into music because it's loud and most of what I'd heard was the junk on the radio. However, my darling grandfather and mother teamed up to introduce me to proper music. They introduced me to country and later novelty music, which are huge inspirations in the humor and storytelling of my stories. My current favorite songs include Class of '57 (The Statler Brothers), Old Army Hat/America the Beautiful (Bill Anderson), Miles and Miles of Texas (Asleep at the Wheel), Wolf Creek Pass (C.W. McCall), and King of the Road (Roger Miller), but my favorite artist will always be Ray Stevens.
So that's what inspired me, but why do I write in the first place? Well, this post is getting long, and I'm sure we all have stuff to do, so I'll leave it here for now.
But before you leave, tell me what your biggest influences are, because I'm curious. Come back soon (hopefully tomorrow) for a discussion on why we'd even write in the first place.
Thank you! Have a wonderful day!

yes. yES. You get me!! I also have to add these tags from a separate reblog:
So basically I’ve been laughing my butt off all night over how this could go, and I’m equally entertained by both options, which I will elaborate on under the cut.
The first is what you’re both describing where all the characters are felt puppet versions of themselves. I totally didn’t think of how it would look if Faramir suddenly showed up as a puppet next to his totally normal human brother, but I love it so much. Elrond would be an amazing muppet, truly. And I think it would be so comical to see each character as a felt/fur puppet design (Though I think it could actually be pulled off quite masterfully?).
Like, the idea of Boromir waking up to see literally everyone he knows has suddenly become small and made of felt practically overnight, and they refuse to acknowledge anything is amiss? Chef’s kiss crack idea right there.
The second option is casting all the other characters as existing muppets, like a Muppet Movie adaptation . Here’s what I’ve come up with (though some characters still have multiple options, and some I haven’t even gotten to yet).
Legolas is Miss Piggy, do I even need to explain. Just picture Miss Piggy’s screaming and hair flips applied to the scene where Legolas kills the Oliphant at Pelennor
Aragorn is Kermit, I don’t ship him and Legolas and I have no clue who Arwen would be, but it just fits
Gimli is Animal (for the sturdy fighting and unlikely friendship with Leggy) or Gonzo (because of the stunt cannon and the ‘no one tosses a dwarf’ bits)
Pippin is Beaker
Sam is the Swedish chef or Fozzie Bear
Elrond is Sam the Eagle
The Sackville-Bagginses are Statler and Waldorf
Frodo is either Big Bird (yes I’m drawing on Sesame Street now, sue me) cause it would be hilarious to see the Chef/Fozzie try to pick him up, or Elmo cause he’s sweet and surprisingly fierce
OR Frodo could be Walter, from The Muppet Movie, and the Sauron could Gary because narrative foil reasons? Idk, it would be funny, that’s why
Denethor is Oscar the Grouch (just picture him eating tomatoes and leering into the palantir, it makes sense I promise)
Eowyn is Janice, the blond stoner lady from the band, she’s super cool and also friends with Animal
Gandalf is Sweetums in a hat, perhaps?
Gollum should be Rizzo the Rat
I haven’t figured out everybody obviously, but that’s what I’ve got so far. I’m totally open to other suggestions too.
And then for whichever way the muppets goes, Boromir is a totally serious, full sized Sean Bean. Nothing about Boromir’s role, casting, or character is changed to match the new setting. He is conscious of being a human amongst muppets, and no one else thinks it’s weird, and he is totally bewildered by it. He’s like ????!!?! where did you guys come from, what is going on?!?! the entire time. Not only is the world ending and he’s having weird prophetic dreams, but now he has to deal with this insane bs too.
(Somehow this distracts him enough from the Ring that he doesn’t fully fall under its influence and just gets injured instead of dying) (He has to go on to see the rest of this)
Lotr where everything is the same except Boromir is the only character who isn’t a muppet.
Every single other character that appears is played by a muppet. But Boromir is still Sean Bean.
My man would be so, so confused it would be great.
#let him be the token human on sesame street#boromir is confused 90% of the time#let’s just increase that for funsies#does this count as#lotr meta#??? it does now#boromir#boromir son of denethor#gondor#the muppets#lord of the rings#lotr#tolkien#middle earth#lotr headcanons#the fellowship of the ring#the muppet movie#aragorn#gandalf#eowyn#sam gamgee#frodo baggins#elrond#merry brandybuck#pippin took#gimli son of gloin#legolas greenleaf#gollum#lotr crack#muppets in lotr

Flowers On The Wall by The Statler Brothers
Okay, so, funny story about this song, I also have this song on the playlist for my Courier, Jess, because it just kind of reminds me of her lol.
Whenever I listen to it, I always imagine a little montage of her just kind of hanging around the Lucky 38 after killing Mr House and taking over with Yes Man. 50% trying to make the place functional again, 50% just goofing off, 100% bored out of her mind and trying to keep herself entertained.
Cleaning up the dead securitron parts and putting them in a bin, picking bullets and shrapnel out of the walls, trying on all the fancy clothes that were just sitting in the closet unused for the last 200 years, having a little dance party, rummaging through the bookshelves and tossing the ones that sound boring over her shoulder, setting up all of Mr House's memorobilia into some kind of rube goldberg machine ("accidentally" smashing a few snowglobes along the way, whoops), learning to shuffle cards (only to immediately send the entire deck flying with that satisfying *ftftftftftftftft* sound), trying very hard to teach Rex some new tricks while he just kind of sits there and tilts his head, lounging upside down on one of the fancy sofas and staring off into nothingness with her hair hanging down. You get the gist lmao
I wish I had the patience for learning 3D animation, because it is literally so vivid in my mind's eye, and it feels like a scene that could have been ripped straight out of one of those quirky dramedy movies from the 90s (directed by the Cohen Brothers or a similar director(s) probably idk)
#thank you anon!!#any excuse to talk about my OCs unprompted lmao#jess barker#fallout new vegas#courier six#robert edwin house#yes man#rex the cyberdog#answered asks#anon#music#ruby's ocs

𝙙𝙮𝙡𝙖𝙣’𝙨 “𝙛𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙡𝙡”: 𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙮𝙨𝙞𝙨
I think it’s eerily prophetic how the song “Flowers on the Wall” (performed by the Statler Brothers) radiates so strongly with Dylan Klebold. The country tune has already been associated with Dylan because it appears in the background of the video where he and Nate are driving to school. But if you really listen to the lyrics and reflect on Dylan’s inner struggles, they coincide strangely well.
Let’s take the very first line of the song.
I keep hearin' you're concerned about my happiness.
The constant ‘Are you okay? Are you sure you’re okay? You seem so down lately’ from his parents, especially Sue, is reflected here. His mother sees that Dylan is ‘moody and irritable,’ often withdrawn, spending time hauled up in his room. She notices the tightness of his voice, which is unlike him, and she offers to make him French toast or an omelet. This must be about something small, she thinks. Yet his sullen demeanor stays as days turn to weeks, and she must ask again in vain, ‘Are you okay?’
But all that thought you're givin' me is conscience, I guess.
It doesn’t even cross Sue’s mind that her son may be unwell. She is simply asking out of concern for him looking unhappy, believing whatever it is will solve itself out. His mother wears her heart on her sleeve, and it pains her to see him so sad. But what can she do if he refuses to talk about it? All she can do is ask and wait for it to pass. He’s a good kid, after all. He’ll do the right thing because she’s worked hard to instill her morals into what he does.
If I were walkin' in your shoes, I wouldn't worry none.
Dylan reassures her repeatedly. ‘I’m only tired. I have a lot of homework. Nothing’s wrong. No one gives me a tough time, I’m 6’4”.’ He wishes she would leave him alone. He thinks she wouldn’t understand; she wouldn’t listen. He tells his parents not to worry. ‘You can trust me,’ he tells his mother one evening after the prom. Dylan goes out of his way to prove that he is the golden child. It works, and they worry none.
While you 'n' your friends are worried about me I'm havin' lots of fun.
Dylan’s social life serves as a mask for what is going on in his mind. He goes over to his friends’ houses, bowls on Friday nights, makes videos after school, plays catch with his dad, and even watches old movies with his mother. He has pictures of good times with friends. Outwardly, he is smiling; life is a dream. This makes his parents rethink their concerns. He’s a happy kid who does normal teenage things. What is there to worry about? He’s assuring those around him that he’s fine.
Now here comes the chorus, which is a bit tricky but makes sense when you consider these things:
Countin' flowers on the wall.
If anyone is familiar with the book The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, this might be a clue. Like the protagonist in the book, Dylan is trapped in his four-walled cell (his bedroom) which is where he does most of his thinking and spiraling downwards. This is where he writes in his journal and vents his frustrations. It’s a toxic environment for his brain. His room is where he cries himself to sleep; hugs his pillow in loneliness; gets drunk by himself. Most importantly, it’s where he blurs fantasy and reality. While not as plainly mad as the poor woman from Gilman’s novel, Dylan is mentally tortured by what he perceives to be ‘an unfair/miserable existence’ and being ‘stuck in humanity.’ He rejects both, and often retreats into his fantasy where he is with his love and away from the world. The ‘flowers on the wall’ symbolizes his own deception of life when he is alone, and might not only symbolize his bedroom, but also his brain.
That don't bother me at all.
Unlike the real world, Dylan very much prefers to live in the fictional one he’s conjured within his mind. It’s his safe place. Paradoxically, his mind is also where he tears himself down and others around him. It’s a poisonous escape. Yet he is already so far gone in that escape, he can’t see the damage he is doing to himself. And he continues to do so, unbothered, and unaware.
Playin' solitaire till dawn with a deck of fifty-one.
‘Playing solitaire’ could be a metaphor symbolizing his isolation and loneliness, his solitude. Solitaire is a single-player game, and Dylan feels alienated most of the time, especially when he is sulking in his room. Thinking, always thinking. Sometimes, as the line implies, until dawn. He is a night owl who cannot sleep because his mind is constantly awake. Playing music, conversing in chats on the computer, formulating poems in his notebooks, doodling, or just thinking (negatively). He oversleeps often because he is up late doing these things. He is alone, in the middle of the night, consumed by his own sadness. Something is missing inside him, and that is why he plays with ‘a deck of fifty-one.’ He thinks a significant other is the thing that is missing, and if he finds her, he will finally be playing with fifty-two cards, figuratively.
Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo.
For Dylan, this is a dichotomy. An everlasting contrast. The balance between two things, lightness, and darkness, good and evil, etc. He’s doing grown-up things like holding a job, applying to colleges, driving a car, and as the lyrics say, smoking cigarettes. Marlboro, preferably. At the same time, Dylan is caught between acting his age and longing for simpler days. This is where ‘watching Captain Kangaroo’ comes in. It’s a kid’s show and is intended for such an audience. Dylan thinks back with nostalgia for his childhood, when life wasn’t full of disappointments, stress, high school bullies, responsibility. He hangs onto items that remind him of his youth: his stuffed koala, origami, classic movies, his trademark baseball cap, his love for fixing old cars with his dad. Dylan is stuck somewhere in the middle of the two, never truly satisfied with one over the other.
Now don't tell me I've nothin' to do.
Again, Dylan tells those around him that he is perfectly fine by engaging in normal teenage things. He hides how depressed he feels. Dylan becomes increasingly irritated the more people ask if he’s okay. The repetition of this line throughout the song is more like a cry for help than a reassurance.
Last night I dressed in tails, pretended I was on the town.
This could symbolize several things, but what comes to my mind is Dylan’s prom night. The fact that he even goes to prom is a pleasant surprise to his parents, confirming that there’s nothing abnormal lurking on the horizon. His father helps him get dressed in his tuxedo, struggles to figure out how the bow tie works, and he pulls his newly washed hair back into a neat ponytail. His mother thinks he looks quite handsome, comparing him to a character in a movie they are both fond of. For a moment, he is just a normal high school kid going to a dance. Nothing out of the boring ordinary.
As long as I can dream it's hard to slow this swinger down.
For one night, at the prom, Dylan pretends this is his life. He is good at blocking out what he considers evil, and Dylan allows himself to enjoy the moment. He’s had a lot of practice at ignoring his pain. If he can retreat into the fantasy he’s created in his mind, he is capable of anything, good or bad. It’s like an out-of-body experience. He’s not there when he’s there. Nothing can stop him. He has two settings at this point, 0 and 100. An unhealthy dreamer can be deadly not only to others, but to the dreamer himself.
So please don't give a thought to me, I'm really doin' fine.
As mentioned previously, Dylan flies under the radar to not be asked about his well-being. He holds out his arms to point to all these social activities he’s engaging in with his friends as if to say ‘Look what I’m doing. I’m fine. Do not worry.’ It’s a cruel deception, and he doesn’t even realize he is being deceived as much as those around him are. Dylan starts to believe what he’s telling others. He doesn’t think he is worth the worry.
You can always find me here; I'm havin' quite a time.
‘Here’ can mean one of several places: his bedroom, his mind, or perhaps his existence. Either way, ‘I’m having quite a time’ is a sarcastic remark. He’s drowning in his harmful thoughts, yet that’s where he feels the safest. It’s his protective shell that he puts up against the world. Dylan entertains the idea over and over in his mind that his love is waiting for him in another existence. No matter where he physically is, he’s ‘always there’, lost in his thoughts.
The chorus repeats. Dylan outwardly seems okay. Left to his own devices, he is not.
It's good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright.
This is a goodbye. Even though it is a casual farewell, it has deeply painful undertones. He says he didn’t like life too much but hopes he will find peace in the next one. He offers a final goodbye to those he loved, family and friends. ‘It’s good to see you’ displays how detached he feels toward the end. These are no longer people he knows fondly; it was simply good to see them. The thoughts must end, and he must leave before they worsen. Like the lyrics suggest, he doesn’t want to stick around and knows he must go. A big part of his self-esteem had to do with his self-image. The line ‘I know I look a fright’ symbolizes how negatively he thought of his own appearance. Dylan couldn’t see his own attractiveness. He felt awkward due to his height, long facial features, shaggy hair, and the way he dressed.
Anyway, my eyes are not accustomed to this light.
This is the trademark dark sunglasses that Dylan wears almost everywhere. He hides behind them, shielding his tears from the world. The light comes from the sun, and he cannot withstand the same light that others can, a nod to him feeling isolated from humanity. Though he is called the ‘sunshine boy,’ his eyes are not meant for its light. So, he dawns the shades to (metaphorically) keep it out.
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete.
Unlike the sneakers worn by the jocks at his high school, Dylan sports black combat boots. They are unusual among the other students, but Dylan feels comfortable in them. Again, he separates himself from the rest of humanity. He is not meant for it. He knows he must go somewhere he feels free.
So I must go back to my room and make my day complete.
By the end of the song, it becomes clear that Dylan now lives inside the world he’s created in his mind. It almost becomes odd for him not to retreat there at least once a day if not all the time. But like the final lyrics, he goes to stay there forever and never to return.
The final repetition of the chorus only emphasizes the truth. He was not ‘doing fine’, despite all the work of convincing others the opposite.
The last line loops again before the song ends. The upbeat and happy tune only makes the message more haunting.
Don't tell me I've nothin' to do.
And no one did.

The Spare - Chapter 12
Here we go! Thank you, @lumosinlove for the SW-verse!
Chapter 12
Out of precaution, Regulus decided to sneak into Malfoy Manor through the kitchen window. He scoffed at the thought that everyone always assumed he was a model son. Sure, he kept his head down, all appearances and he was once very eager to please his parents but that didn't mean he hadn't a rebellious streak.
Sirius often got caught trying to sneak out the house... through the back door... too obvious. Idiot. But he learned over time. Regulus, on the other hand, learned to pick locks and sneak out of windows quiet early on. It was much stealthier and more unsuspected from the obedient, quiet kid.
Around 16, Regulus did this very often, trying to live a little under the thumb of his parents and while pretending not to. Sirius was bold, brave and often getting shit for it. Regulus was collected and sneaky. His escapades went unnoticed. It was all about the right balance. He asked to go out often enough to be considered normal. His parents said no more often than not and Regulus just had to ask for events he was not really interested in. When they said no, he would obediently stay at home and just sneak out to the stuff he actually wanted to go to. Unsuspecting.
He went to several high school parties and concerts, albeit hating crowds, because that was what teenagers did right? What they enjoyed. Regulus did not enjoy the drinking, the stuffed rooms and the gross drunk make-out sessions. Maybe he was born as snarky old man, always been more of a Waldorf, in need for his Statler.
Once in his room, Regulus showered, changed and was just in time for Lucius to take him to practice.
The mood in locker the locker room was disgustingly cheerful. Several Death eaters were reciting their favourite slurs against Sirius and all the “faggots”, how they called queers, in general, accompanied by hollering, whistling and applause.
Regulus thought of Sirius, of Ben and Mateo, how kind and loving they treated him, and it took all his badly patched up self-control to keep his expression blank and polite. This is not right.
He did not return to the shire this evening. Instead, he spent a long time running in the neighbourhood of the Malfoys, trying to sort through the last days.
When he collapsed exhausted into bed this evening, he came to the conclusion that there was actually no way he could get through the mess in his very own… The psychologist-thing was meant as a joke at Thanksgiving, Black…
oOo
The next evening, he nervously rang the bell besides the name tag Hayes/Alves, not knowing whether someone is even at home but he was let into the building and a moment later he found himself unable to knock on the door to their flat. These people owed him noting, why would they even let him in again after he practically stormed out yesterday?
The door was yanked open anyway and a relieved looking Mateo pulled him inside. “There you are, we were worried!”
“What? Why?”
“You were rather upset when you bolted yesterday” Jo provided from the kitchen, a spoon in her mouth and an almost empty can of ice cream in her hands.
“Hey, there you are!” Ben chimed happily, stepping out of the bathroom in his pyjamas and towelling his hair.
“Are you guys mad?” Regulus blurted suddenly, “You don’t know me, I stormed out yesterday after all you have done like an ungrateful asshole and you are actually happy that I'm back?”
“Sure.” All three answered as one, baffling him completely.
“Why?” He was almost desperate, “You have absolutely no gain from me being here... I am just a rookie so no one will buy my secrets from you, I am rather rich but you have nothing to properly blackmail me so what do you want?!”
“Are you serious?” Jo asked after a short silence.
“No, that’s my Brother, I am Regulus.” he answered absentmindedly. Ben and Mateo snorted but Jo just looked puzzled.
Regulus looked back, similarly puzzled. “Sirius Black, the famous, freshly outed, Captain of the Gryffindor Lions?”
Still nothing but a furrowed brow... “NHL?”
'Yeah, yeah, heard of it but hold on, your full name is Regulus, like your real name? And your brother is, in fact, named Sirius, that’s not a fake, too?”
“That is your Question? And no, its Sirius Orion and Regulus Arcturus Black, actually.” Jo anything but shrieked, joining the other two hobbits already shaking with mirth by now.
“Ok, that’s - that’s just bad, I'm sorry” she wheezed after a few minutes.
“I always thought these were aliases… I see that I need to revaluate my bad-name categories.”
“Alors, I call you Josephine from now on?” Regulus was met with a surprisingly deathly glare that sent Ben and Mateo straight into another fit.
A grin started to tuck at the corner of Regulus’ lips but there were still pressing questions.
“Jo, you have no idea of the disaster that went on? You didn’t even check Twitter?”
“Nah, I don’t frequent social media. While I prefer to limit my direct interaction with other people, assholes accumulate there and throw all their bullshit around, guarded by the anonymity of the internet. I think a dentist appointment is less annoying.” The grin tucked again. This weird mixture of slang and hoity-toity wording was just gold.
“But you do watch ice hockey?” He was not sure why that was important for him. Maybe to find out, what she knew about him, maybe because to find out more about her.
“Sometimes yeah. For me you are Reg, the rather giant dude that slept on our couch, that prefers his tea bitter and gross and does not say thank you. The guy with the enjoyable dry humour and good taste in literature that luckily balances his abysmal taste in movies.”
At that Regulus laughed, too. He didn’t know, why exactly but he felt giddy with the idea that these were the first people who wouldn’t define him through hockey and his family. That although they knew of his profession, here was just Reg, not Regulus Arcturus Black, Son of Orion Black, number 72 of the Snakes. Maybe I can have this, after all.
Is this, what Sirius had with his team, with Remus? Another pang of guilt let the laughter die in his throat, his eyes welled up. Not again…please.
But there was no time to recompose himself. Quickly, he was shoved onto the couch, wrapped in the chicken-blanket and surrounded by these idiots caring for him for some reason he still did not understand.
For the third time, his walls broke. Where there even walls by now? Regulus felt rather leaking with emotions.
But of course, he could not keep it in around them and spilled all his life to the three of them, not in as much detail he told Mateo in the hospital but also not keeping his role of Sirius’ outing to himself. Once all was out, there was a tense silence... of course there was, he just told the gay couple in front of him that he forced his brother out to be tormented by a crowd of imbecile haters on the internet.
Regulus was sure, his little excursion into a happy family ended now. Just as he guessed on the first evening here but instead of scolding and disapproving, cold glares he found himself hugged by Ben, again. He gives good hugs; his brain supplied uselessly.
“It’s a shitty move to out someone Reg, there is nothing to sugar coat.” Ben sighed.
“But what they did with that information and how the people online reacted is not your fault.”
Regulus said nothing, just closed his eyes and buried deeper in the shoulder of Ben, who practically sat on his lap to reach the height for such an embrace.
“But your feelings were hurt, too at that time and a lot of people used you. Fuck your family. You know what, I’m your mom now!”
Regulus just continued crying silently into Ben’s Shoulder, Mateo’s hand rubbing slowly over his back, chuckling at Ben’s statement.
“Mother hen.”
This showed what he had suspected for a while now, proof that his parents were not just a little strict. That something in his childhood went horribly wrong and he has no idea what to do with that information except crying it out.
When he calmed down a bit, Ben and Mateo got up to make some tea and finish dinner while quietly talking in Portuguese. So, it was something he was not meant to understand. His stomach knotted uncomfortably.
“Reg?” Jo tried quietly, she had not reacted in any way so far. He had even forgotten that she was still perched on the carpet beside him and somehow, he dreaded what was to come next.
“Hm?”
“Earlier, at the door, as you said that you do not know of what use you are for us as we cannot even blackmail you... you were not joking?” He shook his head, new tears threating to well up. How were there still tears left and what happened to his composure again?
“You really expected us to just care for you as long as we could gain profit?” There was no accusation in her voice just sadness and concern. He shrugged his shoulders; did he think that? No, but this was the only form of interaction he knew, everything always came with a price, an expectation.
The next thing he felt was Jo not practically but literally perched on his lap, straddling his hips, wrapping her arms around him and leaning her cheek against his temple. He knew already that, opposite to her brother, Jo was not the touchy feely type with strangers.
He was not considered a stranger anymore, after a day?
“I don’t know if there is anything one could say to make it better, so I will just keep my mouth shut and hug you until you believe that we like you and care for you. Just like that. As long as it will take.” She wiggled a bit to demonstrate getting comfortable.
There was nothing sexual about the embrace although they were pressed together from shoulders to hips und she just wiggled in his lap. It was completely opposite to the girls that approached him at the parties he sneaked out to. These were eyeing him hungrily, like a trophy. Some of them (very drunk, to their defence) even told him how similar he looked to Sirius… and how sexy they found his brother. He shivered a bit at the memory and gladly went back to reality.
“You might die of old age while waiting.” Regulus lifted his head to check the effect of his attempt in humour on her face but she just tucked his head back, giving a soft huff.
“Nah. 'M convincing but probably need to excuse myself to the bathroom or the fridge in between”
He closed his eyes again, wrapped his arms around her waist and relished in the hug without questioning why this hug felt different, more intimate than Ben’s or Mateo’s.
After an undefinable amount of time, the men came back with plates of Vegetable Quesadillas and Guacamole.
“Comfort Food, my avozinha’s recipe.”, Mateo commented
Instead of answering his question for cutlery, Ben met his eyes, pointedly grabbed a Quesadilla, dipped it in the guacamole and shoved the whole thing in his mouth without breaking eye contact.
Reg snorted with laughter.
oOo
Of course, Ben spilled more than just a little on his shirt.
While Ben and Jo were cleaning the dishes and Ben, Mateo came over with a fresh cup of tea.
“Hey” Reg lifted his head. “I’m talking now as your fried -or co-mom, apparently- that just happens to also have studied medicine” he nodded for Mateo to continue.
“You went through a lot. Not just lately. And you struggle to cope.” Alors, the poker face seems to be gone…
“I do not say that you are weak, you are not! But you might want to consider the help of a therapist to sort through your feelings and your past. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of knowing your boundaries and taking care of yourself. I do not want to talk you into this, you need to want that for therapy to help. So, take you time to think about that, if you need. You can always come to us to talk but no one here is a therapist so we can only help you so far. OK? We are not disposing you to a shrink. Our door is open for you but you might want to have different type of help.”
Reg sat the in silence after this speech, hand running through his hair and rubbing his neck.
He had thought about that, more and more serious since Thanksgiving but hearing it and having the confirmation that he was welcome here …a thought formed in his brain, shortly followed by his usual determination.
"I want this to stop. I want to get better." He looked at Mateo and was met with his signature genuine, warm smile.
"You have a team therapist, don't you? It might be the fastest way to an appointment."
Reg grimaced at the thought of Dr. Slughorn. Generally well-meaning but when in doubt always humouring Riddle.
"I wouldn't trust him with taking the trash out." Regs grimace it met with a raised eyebrow.
"Do you want me to help you find someone else?" Mateo asked carefully and after a relieved nod from Reg, continued. "OK. Good, this is really good. Now for the next part."
Reg furrowed his brows
"Ben and I talked, and we want to offer you to stay here for a while after All Star, out of the clutches of your family. Of course, you have to go to practice and stuff but maybe it would be healthier for you to feel less controlled, less suffocated by them. We would find something else for you to sleep on than the couch, of course." Mateo joked.
Reg blinked at the guy in front of him in disbelieve. Encore: What the hell? "You would do that? Let me stay?"
"Yep. We are your moms now, after all." Ben all but yelled over from the kitchen.
This isn't a fever-trip. This is a dream, and I hope that I will not wake up too soon.
This night, he spent in Jos bed.
"The couch is lumpy so we will share that bed. I'm not ruining my neck for you." Was her announcement before she marched off, Reg in tow.
He was led into the room, expecting a bedroom and was greeted with a little bureau.
"Erm..." Was all Reg could say.
"Well I only stay here during semester breaks so it's mor like a multi-purpose room." Jo seemed to miss the point entirely.
"But there is no bed?!"
She gave him an odd look and... folded a mattress out of the closet? "You've never seen a Murphy bed?"
"Obviously."
A little while later Reg squeezed himself beside Jo in the double bed. How does such a small person take up so much space?
“Won't it fold up in the night and swallow us whole?" The thought made him nervous, but he was greeted with the Hayes™ way of soothing. Bullying into feeling better.
“Not with your fat ass in here. Sleep or I send you back to the couch.”
They did not sleep for a long while.
Instead the talked a lot like on the first morning that felt like years ago although it has been just two days. In these days, his life was turned inside out, fortunately. He liked this version better.
The more they talked and bantered, the more Reg understood, that she really did not calculate her moves but just did what seemed the honest, right and fair choice… which is why she was horrible at the midnight chess match: Not thinking a few steps ahead and no intention of sacrificing figures or threatening enemy figures… irritating and endearing.
Also, she had quite a lot of very good burns but apologised every time afterwards. Hilarious... too nice for her devilish mind.
The next morning, he woke up around four, with Jo's back tucked against his side. He had slept about two hours, not able to sleep any longer anyway but he stayed in bed, secretly enjoying the feeling of a warm weight beside him.
Thoughts about his brother were still omnipresent in his mind but right now, other thinks demand his attention. Reg was pretty sure that he was falling for Jo.
He had had one or another crush in school but what he felt now was magnitudes stronger. Coming to think of it, his feelings about Ben and Mateo were also magnitudes stronger but... different. The idea of the girl he just met not being within an hour driving distance, once she returned to Boston, left a weight on his chest, accompanied by an unfamiliar longing.
But that was not the point... everything would be OK with that point. The point was, it's not the same as he heard all the other guys in school, in the locker room talk about girls… he didn't get off imagining her naked, or both of them having sex, he never thought that about anyone, actually, and was convinced the boys boasting about how they want to hit all these girls and how they got horny every time some girl with a too-short-to-be-comfortable skirt walk by, were just exaggerating… or were they not? Was there something he just didn't understand, hadn't experienced yet? It's not that he hadn't had sex before and it was nice enough, but he never quite understood why people would go absolutely nuts about this past-time exercise. It was basically wanking with extra steps.
Hell, Reg felt not even aroused by Jo's ass pressed to his thigh in her sleep but he was very sure that he wanted to hold her close, feel her skin under his hands, her body pressed to his, to kiss her and be definitely more than friends with her; And he had absolutely no idea how to explain this to her and still hope for a chance of dating her eventually... This was not what people were looking for in a partner, was it?
He groaned... was there nothing simple on this world for him?
But then again, Jo was different, that's why he liked her, she had this no-bullshit attitude that let her stomp on several feet regularly. She was the only person he knew that would most likely appreciate if he just spoke his mind about the situation and have a balanced, rational and decidedly calm discussion about their feelings. He silently laughed. The thought about such a conversation was ridiculous but fairly simple. Maybe this would be easier than he first thought. He was not sure on what terms they would end but the situation would be evaluated and free of misunderstandings at the end.
He would talk to her after All Star, after facing his brother and trying to... what?
oOo
Telling Lucius and Narcissa that he wanted to stay elsewhere for a few nights went smoother than expected. After a short call with his mother she agreed to give him a bit of freedom. After the outing, his parents seemed to be eager to keep Reg as the good son. So, Walburga was in kind of open for some little claims. Of course, she wanted to know where he was staying so he pretended to need alone-time after the shock of his brother's outing and booked a hotel room until All Star as cover. He was definitely not risking his Mother taking this very fragile attempt of escape away from him.
Reg quietly packed a bag with clothes to take with him directly from the airport after All Star and spent his waiting time at the airport on the phone with Mateo, looking for a therapist. He would meet Dr. Bones close to the Hospital, Mateo worked at, next Thursday.
The flight with Snape was horrible. Reg tried to keep his thought about Sirius at bay, not checking social media at all but Severus kept sneering about Queers in general and Sirius. He laid open all the information he could dig up out about Remus and even announced proudly, that he forwarded it all to the commentators of the red carpet
Oh… merde. C’est pourri! They are in for a shit-show.
But Reg would not have to opportunity to contact Sirius before that.

Hickory / Dickory: Brothers Or No?
I've mentioned this a couple of times before, because for me it's the biggest unanswered question from the movie.
I believe they're not.
Their names rhyme, yes, and they're both yellow Trolls with reddish hair, but that's really all they have in common. Hickory is a full head taller than Dickory, which means little in the grand scheme of things, but consider the differences in their facial structure. Hickory's ears are tapered, Dickory's are round. H has a square jawline, while D is all chin with a tiny forehead. Hickory has green eyes, while Dickory's are more of a bluish-green. Dickory also has bigger teeth and much bushier eyebrows. Even the styles of their Tyrolean hats are different, which I can't see being the case if they were actually family.
I'd also like to point out that at no point does the junior novelization refer to them as brothers.
All this being said, if people still want to headcanon them as brothers, that's absolutely fine. I have no problem with that.
EDIT 03/30/21: So yes, I am aware that Dickory's profile on the official Dreamworks website refers to them as "Yodeling brothers". They could be adopted; however, I interpret "Yodel Brothers" in the same sense as the Righteous Brothers, or the Statler Brothers, who were not actually brothers but used the term as part of their group name. With that being said, I want to make it clear that I do not support shipping these two, because the implication is enough to make that a no-no.
