roman being the one to always make offensive jokes and yet never making a single one about shiv’s weight gain until he finds out that it’s because she’s pregnant and not for other reasons, especially given the siblings’ history with disordered eating, is so characteristic of the way they care for each other, not by checking in and all the usual stuff but simply by never crossing a line. they always know when to stop and when they do accidentally cross that line, they always apologize or regret it. it also just ties in really beautifully with the complexity of the food motif in that season, shiv being the only one we actually see eating a few times, and again, roman never making a single comment.

Al coming back from his travels: Xing was great! I've learned so much about alkahestry, and I think we're really making progress and getting Jerso and Zampano's bodies back! It was really nice to see Mei, and Ling is doing a great job as emperor, and I even got to visit some of Xing's neighbors to the east! If you give Roy Mustang a child, I need you to realize that on the eve of that child's twelfth birthday (at the latest), Roy is going to call up Edward Elric, sobbing, begging for forgiveness after conscribing a traumatized child to Amestris' military service. Because nothing is gonna suckerpunch this sinner harder than the realization that twelve year olds are supposed to complain about homework and strict parents, instead of having metal grafted to their skin and guilt weighing them down. Roy Mustang as a father would see every order he gave to Fullmetal and realize that he was turning a child into a dog.

And by the time Roy was ready to apologize? Well, Ed might no longer be an alchemist but he has no time for sentimental bullshit and useless confessions of guild while traveling the world. And he can still fight with the best of them. Ed doesn't need Roy's guilt - but you know Roy would soak it up and internalize it.

Edward paused. He remembered this moment, somewhere in the recess of his brain. Fifteen years old, pocket change in the womb of his coat, dog shit tea smudged over his lips. He’d meant to leave and had glanced the Colonel pouring dogshit tea for Lieutenant Hawkeye. He remembered thinking, ‘He must hate her if he’s feeding her dogshit tea.’ He remembered, too, the oppressive intimacy of it. The Colonel’s eyes flickering to the Lieutenant’s lips. He’d looked away rather quickly.   Edward slipped the tea letter back into the pile and retrieved Roy’s letter he wrote following his strokes. Edward picked up where he left off.
