Tomb of Emperor Minh Mang, Hue, Vietnam

Emperor Minh Mang was the second emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty.  His reign (1820 – 1841) represents the apex of Nguyen power over the country.

Emperor Minh Mang was known for his anti-Western policies, especially his persecution of Christian missionaries, and his opposition to French involvement in Vietnam.  Minh Mang’s empire stretched across present-day Vietnam and into Cambodia and Laos. His isolationist policies banned foreign missionaries and bolstered Confucian ideology.

He also completed the conquest of the Champas, a collection of independent Cham polities, that extended across the coast from approximately the 2nd century to 1832, in what is present-day central and southern Vietnam.

The Champas, a distinct minority tribe in Vietnam, with Oceanic (Malay-Polynesian) features, are said to have originated from present-day Indonesia (Borneo) and settled in Central Vietnam starting in the early 3rd century BC. They speak Chamic languages, with roots in the Malayo-Polynesian language.

Emperor Minh Mang started construction on his tomb during his reign, but it was still incomplete upon his death, leaving his son to complete his final resting place.

Emperor Minh Mang was a very prolific person, having 42 wives/concubines and siring 143 kids. I suspect, by now a large number of Vietnam's population is carrying his genes.

Tomb of King Gia Long is the mausoleum complex of the first king and founder of the Nguyen Dynasty and also the last feudal dynasty in Vietnam.
