Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964)
"Miriam? He really... isn't here, is he? Just now, I thought I heard... sometimes at night, when I wake up, it seems as if he really is here. Don't turn on the light. It's not real when it's light. It's only real when it's dark - dark and still."
#hush...hush sweet charlotte#hush...hush‚ sweet charlotte#robert aldrich#1964#american cinema#lukas heller#henry farrell#bette davis#olivia de havilland#joseph cotten#agnes moorehead#cecil kellaway#victor buono#mary astor#wesley addy#william campbell#bruce dern#george kennedy#frank ferguson#frank de vol#Aldrich's follow up to Baby Jane reunited him with star Davis (and initially Crawford‚ until she left the project under a cloud; she can#just about be glimpsed in one of the long shots of cousin Miriam arriving at the house by taxi) and even provides a cameo for Baby Jane co#star Buono. the rest of his cast is also notably starry: de Havilland‚ Cotten‚ Moorehead‚ even a genuine cinematic legend like Astor not to#mention a pre fame Dern and Kennedy. sadly all that increased star power doesn't translate to a film even better than its predecessor#this is solid‚ a strong and sweaty gothic grotesquerie‚ but it's a little flabby and nowhere near as sharp or as honed as Baby Jane was#Davis often goes very large and brushes caricature more than once with her faded Southern belle but to give her her dues there are other#moments of true heartbreaking beauty in her performance. de Havilland is also very strong altho maybe tips her hat a little soon in#revealing the true personality lingering beneath the surface of her mysterious outsider. Aldrich is as strong as ever helming a killer#fantasy sequence... tbh the more i think about it the kinder my memory of this becomes. it has just one main flaw and that's that it isn't#Baby Jane. but then what is? Aldrich never quite hit those heights again (tho he did some p great work) and this is a commendable try

Reagan Reviews #1 -The Killers (1964)
Tumblr media
i watched this movie a few months ago and honestly it was VERY confusing and,, not that good. basically the synopsis is (MAJOR SPOILERS): these two hit men (the killers i guess) kill this guy, but he wasn’t very resistant? and that was weird to them. so they go figure out a little mystery!
there’s a lot of flashback segments about this race car driver and ronald reagan’s girlfriend who i guess he’s letting get with other guys or whatever. reagan’s about to do a heist but (here’s the best part) his character cannot drive for shit!!! so angie’s like “hey my new boyfriend can actually drive why don’t we get him to help.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so they hire him for this whole elaborate heist where they trick a van carrying money to take a detour down this shitty road, pretend to be police (i think?? idk) and pull the van over, they beat them up or shoot them and take money.
they do all this and of course the race car driver steals all the money and pushes reagan out of a car and he rolls down a hill LOL. ronnie and angie find him and get the money back (and presumably put a hit on him??? who knows). the killers track them down (i guess they really wanted the money?) and (REALLY BIG SPOILERS) they literally just all die at the end.
it’s a remake of a movie that people actually like which is based on a hemingway short story. it made about $9,000 worldwide and coincidently came out the same year reagan decided to go into politics!
(i think i read that he gave up acting because he didn’t like playing the villain in that movie, but once i watch the santa fe trail i don’t think that’ll make much sense)
anyways, ratings!
acting - i’m not that good at judging acting, let’s just say like 8/10
plot - very confusing. a lot of flashbacks. for an action/mystery/heist it had a lot of fluff and a lot of VERY LONG race car scenes. 4/10
reagan - honestly i prefer his silly/more comic relief characters, but i think for his older self it was a good role. he has a lot of creepy shots and slaps angie in the face before absolutely getting his shit rocked. also he roles down the hill which is incredible. because i have a frame of reference for his other characters, 7/10
Tumblr media Tumblr media
cinematography - pretty good! it has a lot of cool shots, again several long ass driving scenes. i think maybe the race car blows up at some point? johnny is GOING THROUGH IT. but yea 9/10
ending - pretty lame "they all die at the end." i didn't understand what happened but maybe that's just me. like 2/10 for lady i don't have the time.
overall - 6/10 decent movie, nothing to write home about. reaganomics music video was better.
where to watch? right here ^_^ https://ok.ru/video/2871101557400 (ty @/dc-follies)
till next time 🫡
