This sort of notion always sort of exhausts me as someone from eastern europe whose family did not appeal to any sort of lucky demographic during these times. It is preciesly bc ppl like the one commenting refuse to do a deep dive (or even a surface one for that matter) on their history and live by the notion that capitalism is better because of a fake imposed sense of freedom and fear of critical thinking. What happened in the Soviet Curtain was in technicality modeled after communism to a degree but people seem to completely miss the part where these were totalitarian regimes that employed the cult of personality which resulted in nationalistic pride, surveilence states and political inprisonment. I am romanian, I have studied its history and I can tell you that for a period, communism worked for the country, because there was no cult of personality, heavy nationalism and there was a focus on making the country self suficient while taking care of its people ( slightly related is the fact thar for example women had acess to medical abortions which was completley scrapped post Ceausescu being introduced to a totalitarian, worshiping, nationalist perspective)

Its good to inform yourself on these things bc the capitalistic machine wants us to take these instances of horrific things that have happened and think "Well if communism was like that, I rather suffer capitalism!"

Tariffs on foreign shirt > foreignmade shirt get more expensive > shirts made in the usa are expensive (because making them yourself instead of having modern slavery children in Bangladesh make them for you, shockingly, is more expensive) > the products are more expensive, the consumer does not win, inflation ensues. the same inflation, which trump promised to lower.

like it's not that people particularly like me or respect me. torn opinions on whether I am a self hating bisexual repressing my attraction to men or a self hating lesbian repressing my truth (I am a confident bisexual women with a preference for other women and enough age to admit men didn't make me happy). but I am taken more seriously and the reactions (especially from the neoliberal rebranded homophobia crew) are less aggressive. almost like I passed the ritual served my time as an object to men. a concerning amount of people on every social circle and political opinions still seem to believe lesbians have to "just try it" "just to be sure". otherwise they are either infantilized as eternal virgins who never reach complete womanhood. or vilified as fetishist predatory towards women in what is so obviously mere punishment for their complete proud and certain rejection of men. everyone is so lesbophobic it's unreal

Every time I see people worrying about students using chatGPT to cheat assignments I despair a little more at the state of modern academia because like.

Chat GPT essays suck. They're so bad. They get basic facts wrong, they make up references that don't exist, they jump from one argument to the next without any throughline or coherence or objective. They are very bad essays.

So if your students are "coasting" through your course using chatGPT, if you're not failing every essay that chatGPT produces, that is a real indictment of how abysmally low the standards on that course are.

Like yeah, I get it, the idea that there could be nurses and engineers and other people in specialist roles where human lives are on the line who didn't engage with their training at all because they used generative AI to write their essays is really scary but like. If they were able to pass their courses using chatGPT that just shows that those courses were also going to pass someone who made shit up, had no real grasp of the subject matter, and failed to critically engage with the set material at all and at that point it's just like. I mean is machine assisted incompetence really that much scarier than entirely human incompetence? Surely the problem here is that incompetence is being let through at all???
