The art is lovely and now I'm gonna ramble because that's what I do when I care about something.
For the love of women, please PLEASE can fan artists remember to add muscle to their Shadowhunter ladies? I'll commend Bowater for cleverly giving James that sculpted and lean look without making him a beefcake (nothing against beefcakes, I'd love to hug them), but Cordelia is once again suffering from Arms And Shoulders Too Slender It's Hard To Even Imagine Her Picking Up A Sword. There is some there, yes, but artists shouldn't be afraid of giving particularly Female Main Characters weight and toned muscle. Cordelia is supposed to be nearly the same height as James as far as I can remember, and she's curvy, and full, and she wields a sword like it's second nature to her. Please explain why she looks so tiny in James' lap.
Also I'm pretty sure marriage runes are supposed to go over the heart whenever possible (thinking about Will's parabatai rune being over his heart instead -- he didn't get Tessa to draw over the scar, did he??) and... either I'm looking at the picture wrong or James' rune is not over where his heart should be.
For the matter, where are their other runes and scars?? James' Voyance rune isn't even on his hand. And I'm pretty sure he's right handed. I could have that wrong though.
Another thing: no one can ever decide what Cordelia's hair looks like and it's the funniest thing to me. This is what happens when all you do is vaguely say the colour is like fire but also like rose petals but also a flowing river of those things but also is Red (probably for redhead, but then from there I never understand where the rose petal analogy comes from considering the typical rose is a deep bloody colour -- I do acknowledge the existence of those light orange varieties though which might more closely resemble red hair). In the end, I'm glad readers can infer what they want and imagine the characters how they like.
Anyone else think James looks like he's built like a tennis player? Oddly specific, maybe, but it was a thought I had. Mostly the arms and somewhat narrow body.
James' hair is nice, his eyes are an interesting take on gold in the shadows. Bowater managed to also make him look closely related to his father, so bravo for that.
In the end, the focus is obviously on the marriage runes and not other physical aspects outside of it being clear that this is James and Cordelia. Bowater's style is very beautiful and elegant. Love the way fabric and lighting is done too. I'll add also that it is possible to be a smaller person who is slender but still strong so I mean Cordelia's not necessarily done wrong, I just interpret her appearance differently. Obviously, they're both hot and they're both attractive and I have my qualms with the series, chronicles, and author -- the fandom I am so-so on, though I'm still here, aren't I? And I'm taking the time to ramble about my thoughts on a piece of fanart -- but this is good. Gorgeous, even. Both James and Cordelia are beautiful.
#side note: am I the only one who thought cc made a mistake trying to describe james as handsome in cordelia's eyes#as opposed to matthew being the beautiful one#when there has always been a deep and aching strange beauty to james??#james herondale#cordelia carstairs#vaguely crediting charlie bowater though it isn't like you can't find a dozen more copies of this with the credit#also yes I mercilessly picked this apart because I am still trying to find avenues to express my dissatisfaction with tlh#I search for flaws what else can I say#I am aware of it but it's hard to turn those thoughts processes off#maybe I'll write a post at some point all about the authors I once Loved that I am now deeply critical of#a lot of people would hate me for it but eh#also we all know about the marvelisation of cinema#but is it time to talk about the marvelisation of book series/worlds?#or perhaps it has a better and more book-focused name? the jkr approach? rick riordan's marvel-esque flaw? the sjm plague? the clare affair?#we'll workshop it#maybe it's the curse of middleschool-YA series and the issue of aginh readers in fandoms#and I don't mean this as discriminatory against anyone older in fandom because there is not really a limit nor should there be#for most media#but the issue of when the readers grow up amd authors try to accomodate for that -- not necessarily by making their work more adult --#but by making MORE because there is also an influx of new fans and they want to stay relevant while retaining the old#it's a whole thing though I'd need to sit down to properly organise my thoughts to talk about it

KitTy Oneshot: Royal AU
Once upon a time, there was a kingdom, Alicante, which was reigned by Queen Theresa, also often known as Tessa, and her husbands, King William and King James, also known as Will and Jem. They had four children together, the two oldest, Prince James and Princess Lucie, were very obviously Willā€™s children, while the youngest, Princess Wilhelmina, also often called Mina, was Jemā€™s child. They had also adopted a boy in Lucieā€™s age named Christopher Jonathan, or Kit, who was said to be the grandson of a lost princess from another kingdom.
The royal family was very close with the Blackthorn family, one of the elite families in Alicante, and especially Tessa and Jem were keen to take care of the Blackthorn children after their parents had died. Today, all the Blackthorn siblings, apart of only ten-year-old Octavian, served the royal family as brave knights or maids and servants.
The oldest sibling, Helen, and her wife, Aline were doing an exchange year in another country, while her brother Mark, the oldest boy, was living with his girlfriend Cristina in a different kingdom, as they were dating the new king, Kieran. Andrew Blackthorn, their father, had them with his first wife, Nerissa, before they separated, while the other children had a different mother, Elanor. The oldest of them was Julian, who was serving the royal family as a knight, together with his girlfriend, Emma Carstairs, Jemā€™s cousin, and his younger brother Tiberius. Tiberius twin sister Livia and their youngest sister Drusilla served as maids and took care of the youngest princess and their baby brother, Octavian, though they were often joined by Lucie and Kit, who simply adored their little sister and tried to spend every free minute with her. James obviously loved little Mina, too, but as crown prince he had far more responsibilities than his younger siblings and therefore couldnā€™t spend time with them as often as he would have liked to. But sometimes James wife, Cordelia, who was Jemā€™s and Emmaā€™s cousin and Lucieā€™s best friend, joined them, too, as she loved her in-laws just as much as her husband did.
While James was already married, Lucie and Kit were still single, or at least thatā€™s what was officially claimed by the crown, though there were rumours, that Lucie was dating the cousin of the Blackthorn siblings, Jesse and Kit was dating Livia. But since relationships of royals with normal people were frowned upon by many people (not the Queen and Kings, but the officials), the rumours stayed unconfirmed.
Speaking of rumours, the crown princeā€™s wife, Cordelia, was also having an affair with his best friend Matthew, according to those rumours. Even though all three of them had denied those rumours, some people still believed it, claiming, that, if the pair loved each other so much, they would already have had a child. This was obviously, to put it in Kitā€™s words, ā€˜some bullshitā€™, but still felt very pressured by that.
But the sex life of the crown prince couple is not what this story is about. Itā€™s rather the life of the other prince, that is interesting for this. Shortly after Minaā€™s birth, a series of weird cases of attacks began. Many men landed themselves in hospitals, after being attacked by a person, who had hurt them just enough that they couldnā€™t escape and had then called for an ambulance, who brought them to a hospital. Those attacks seemed totally uncalled for, but after interviewing the victims, the knights found out that all of them were wanted rapists, who had been known for raping female prostitutes, primarily from other kingdoms, as in Queen Tessaā€™s Kingdom, everyone lived in enough wealth, that they didnā€™t have to sell their body for money. It seemed that all of them had met up with a young girl, named Hazel, but before they could do anything to her, were attacked by a young man, who injured them just enough so they couldnā€™t escape. ā€œHazelā€ then played shocked and called for an ambulance, who brought the men to hospitals and helped the knights to arrest them. This went on for three years, every few months a new attack, but the knights couldnā€™t find out anything else and even after an organized search by the people, neither ā€œHazelā€, nor the young man were found. They even went as far to declare legally, that both wanted people would experience no legal consequences as their attacks helped arresting the rapists, but nothing happened, apart from the attacks every few months.
Only the new knight, Tiberius Blackthorn managed to change that.
After interviewing every single one of the victims again, Ty concluded, that the attackers, or at least one of them, knows, which men were wanted, and therefore must be either another knight or a different person of the Court, as they were the only ones who had access to this information. Or they had a close relationship to one person of the court, who gave them the information. Also it appeared, that every attack happened on a Friday night.
Knowing that Ty and Livvy, who had come to help him, interviewed every single member of the court, even the Royal Family, about what they did on Friday nights. But nobody seemed to be alone on those nights, everyone had at least two people who could confirm, that they were together. The Queen and her husbands spend every Friday taking a bath, James and Cordelia visited the theatre and were joined by Matthew, Lucie and Jesse had a date night at his house, while his sister was also there, and Kit joined Livvy and Dru, playing with their little siblings. Only Emma and Julian spend their time alone in their room, but since they were rather loud at whatever they were doing there, no one believed that they had something to do with the attacks. So, it seemed, that the suspects were not part of the court, but got their information from a third party, who was part of the court.
So, the twins came up with a better plan to catch the suspects. They faked a rape report and put the name of their friend, Malcolm on it. Malcolm, who worked as a warlock, had agreed to help them catch the attackers. Then they left the report lying around on a table and Livvy told every member of the court, who would listen, about the new case of rape.
For another two months, nothing happened and they were already giving up hope, but then, Malcolm got a letter from the mysterious girl named Hazel, who asked to meet up in a dark street for ā€œprivate businessā€. After telling the twins about the letter, he agreed, and they set up a plan: Emma and Julian, who where now told about the plan, would hide in the abandoned house and hour before the meeting and Malcolm would come there with a knife hidden in his jacket to defend himself. But Ty and Livvy had to stay in the castle, as their older brother claimed that they were too inexperienced to join them on such a dangerous mission.
Obviously though, they didnā€™t listen and hid in the house too, before the others arrived.
Five minutes before the meeting, a brown haired girl appeared at the end of the street, walking fast towards the abandoned house and stopping next to a huge tree in front of the door. After a few minutes, Malcolm joined her, though he couldnā€™t get closer that five feet, before a hooded figure jumped out of the tree and tried to attack him, but was stopped by Emma and Julian, who came out of the house and tried to arrest them. While they were successful with Hazel, but the boy managed to escape on a horse and neither them were able to stop him. After Julian gave the twins a short talk about the dangers of this mission, forgetting that his siblings were already adults, they made their way back to the castle, where they interviewed Hazel and asked her to stay there, to catch her partner. Then everyone went to bed, a bit sad that they hadnā€™t been able to catch the boy behind the attacks.
But the next day Julian came to Ty, with a white cloth in his hand.
ā€œThe boy from yesterday lost this, when he ran away.ā€, his brother explained and gave him the cloth to look at. It smelled familiar. The cloth looked like a napkin and had golden threat broided in. Turning the cloth around, they found words that were broided in as well: ā€œJack & Roseā€.
To be continuedā€¦
Happy December 10th, everyone!
Who do you think is the boy, that they are looking for? If you want to, leave your idea in the comments.

had to stop reading because once again the james and grace of it all was pissing me off. why are they so annoying nothing else in this book or any of cassieā€™s books bugs me like this. anyway iā€™ve been thinking. about emma carstairs and her lineage. so she canā€™t be descended from cordelia right because cordelia as a woman in england in 1903 canā€™t exactly pass on her last name. i know charlotte did but thatā€™s because charlotte is the consul and she can do whatever she wants and also the name matthew branwell sounds awful. not the point. so this means. that some poor woman has to probably marry and then have at least one child with alastair carstairs. i donā€™t know who she is but sheā€™s already suffered more than anyone else in this series oh my god can you imagine having to marry alastair carstairs. and i know emma has to be a biological descendant of them because in all the sobh art sheā€™s drawn to look SO much like alastair it makes me act crazy. remember the art of her holding his dagger and imagining him watching over herā€¦ anyway so thereā€™s no way that was an oversight on cassandra jeanā€™s part cassie had to have told her that emma should look like alastair. especially because in all the old art of emma (made before cassie was writing tlh) she looks way different. so like. some poor girl has to marry that gay man. i feel so bad for her itā€™s unreal. the only other scenarios iā€™ve been able to think up are that somehow cordelia is able to name her children with her last name (but if she really ends up with james thatā€™s not possible because we know jace is descended from james). or. they have a secret sibling. unlikely. or. and this one is bad. maybe cordelia has a baby but itā€™s like an affair baby and she canā€™t keep it so they pretend itā€™s her brotherā€™s or something i donā€™t know i thought about this for like two minutes. thatā€™s also unlikely tho. damn rip to his eventual wife. literally despairing thinking about this

Do another tlh characters ranking pretty please my opinion on them also changes every other day
anon ilysm for giving me an excuse to this again šŸ’–šŸ’–
i ranked the characters and gave a very brief opinion on them because i like giving my opinion on things, sorry šŸ˜‚ā˜ ļø
TLH character ranking:
1. Alastair Carstairs
2. Thomas Lightwood
3. Cordelia Carstairs
4. Christopher Lightwood
5. Lucie Herondale
my top 5 characters remain the same as before, even tho the positions are changed. lucie is lower than she was before, thomas and christopher are higher, but this isn't because my love for them increased/decreased, it's just a matter of who i'm emotionally closer at the moment (i hope this makes sense). i'm pretty sure that my top 5 won't change (at least not until coi) but they might switch positions once in a while - my libra ass doesn't allow me to settle down heheheh
6. Grace Blackthorn
7. Ariadne Bridgestock
the 6th and 7th spot is more of a matter about who makes me curious than a matter of love and affection tbh. based on chog, grace's the most complex character in the series (along side with alastair) imo and everything about her personality/past/powers is very interesting. i have big expectations for ariadne's arc - although i'm very afraid she might be reduced to only anna's affair. if well written, her reclaim and reconnection with her culture can be one of the best thing in the series.
8. Jesse Blackthorn
9. James Herondale
here we have the characters that i wished i could care about or like. when i did the ranking before, jesse was on the 7th place (i think?) not because i actually liked him, but because i felt like i had to care about him - and i tried, i swear. nowadays idk how to feel towards him, he's just,,,,,,, there?? the other one is james and i know that sometimes i seem to be someone who hates him, but i don't!!! do i get angry with the "you're the chosen one" trope around him? yes. his days past are the main reason why i don't reread chog? yes. do i think that the story would be a lot better if we gave at least 30% of his page-time to other characters? yes. but i don't hate him, he's just very boring and this pisses me off šŸ˜šŸ˜
10. Anna Lightwood
11. Matthew Fairchild
12. Charles Fairchild
the last three remained the same and i think everyone already knows my thoughts about them šŸ™Š, since i'm very vocal about this (sorry again). tbh i dislike matthew more now than i did before (i've come to the terms that i'm a matthew hater) but charles has a lifetime chair on the last place lmao and that's the only reason why matthew isn't on the 12th spot ā˜ ļøā˜ ļø

The Slayer Duology~Slayer and Chosen (Both are set in the BTVS universe) by Kiersten White
The Num8ers Trilogy~Num8ers, The Chaos, and Infinity (Sci-Fi and Dystopian) by Rachel Ward

About the Book
The Silver Gun (An Art Deco Mystery) by L.A. Chandlar Cozy Mystery 1st in Series Kensington (August 29, 2017) Paperback: 336 pages ISBN-13: 978-1496713414 Digital ASIN: B01MQSAJO7
New York City, 1936. In the midst of the Great Depression, the Big Apple is defiantly striving toward an era infused with art, architecture, and economic progress under the dynamic Mayor La Guardia. But those in City Hall know that tumultuous times can inspire both optimism and deadly danger . . .
Itā€™s been six months since Lane Sanders was appointed Mayor Fiorello ā€œFioā€ La Guardiaā€™s new personal aide, and the twenty-three-year-old is sprinting in her Mary Janes to match her bossā€™s pace. Despite dealing with vitriol from the Tammany Hall political machine and managing endless revitalization efforts, Fio hasnā€™t slowed down a bit during his years in office. And luckily for Lane, his unpredictable antics are a welcome distraction from the childhood memories that haunt her dreamsā€”and the silver gun sheā€™ll never forget.
When Lane gets attacked and threatened by an assailant tied to one of most notorious gangsters in the city, even the mayor canā€™t promise her safety. The corrupt city officials seem to be using Lane as a pawn against Fio for disgracing their party in the prior election. But why was the assailant wielding the exact same gun from her nightmares?
Balancing a clandestine love affair and a mounting list of suspects, Lane must figure out how the secrets of her past are connected to the cityā€™s underground crime networkā€”before someone pulls the trigger on the most explosive revenge plot in New York history . . .
Character Guest Post
Iā€™m Laneā€™s sleuthing partner, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Roarke Channing. Iā€™m an investigative reporter, and my fervor for a good story knows no bounds. Iā€™m always on the prowl. And Laneā€™s boss, the 99th mayor of New York City always gives us reporters a run for the money. In fact, we often camp out across from City Hall just waiting. He never ceases to please.
Ā  One time, we all followed him up to Bronx Terminal Market, where the notorious gangster, Ciro Terranova had his command central. He was also known at the Artichoke King ā€“ had a monopoly on artichokes. Fiorello dug up some arcane law that cited that in an emergency, the mayor had the power to stop food distribution. So on Christmas Eve morning, Fiorello got a fleet of police cars lined up and we reporters just knew that a good story was about to happen. We all followed him as fast as we could, only to arrive to witness Fiorello unrolling a lordly scroll with two trumpeters majestically accompanying his kingly actions. He declared the Artichoke King shut down. While the gangsterā€™s lawyers scrambled to fight what they knew was a publicity stunt ā€“and it wasā€”Fiorello had West Coast artichoke distributors flood the market. The prices immediately went down and there was to be no more Artichoke King. I thought I might die laughing right then and there as soon as I saw him, his five-foot-two personage unrolling that scroll!
Ā  But Lane herself is just as interesting. I wonder sometimes about her history. I think she has some demons to face. In fact, this fall I know sheā€™s planning a trip back to her home town in Michigan to face some of those ghosts. And there are a couple of characters Iā€™m not too sure about. That Finn guy might be trouble. But then again, he and Lane have quite a bond. Thereā€™s also a guy called Tucker on the scene ā€“ I wonder if heā€™ll stick around.
Ā  I really like my author. Even though she gave me dimples ā€“ I despise my dimples. Sheā€™s funny. She gives me some high adventure and great banter with Lane. I always like a good laugh. Plus, I get a lot of dancing scenes. Boy, these days ā€“the 1930sā€“ are full of amazing music. The Savoy is our favorite place to go dancing. Readers will hear more about that amazing place in book 3. I saw Clark Gable there once! And let me tell ya about the cocktails! Boy oh boy. And I do enjoy my pinstripe suits and fantastic hats. Like all characters in books, I do have fears about how long the author will have me around. But I donā€™t think Laurie will kill me off. Fingers crossed!
Ā  Something no one knows about me, is that the author has a good romance for me that will come around the bend soon. I tend to not have any big romantic interests right off the bat, nothing ever really takes. Some people think I should end up with Lane. But for now, finding the next big scoop is what motivates me. That is, until I eventually meet someone who becomes a good friend and someone I end up mentoring on the sly. But be quiet about this, no one is supposed to see that coming yet. Weā€™ll see!
Come and hang out with us in The Art Deco Mystery series! Itā€™s the bees knees. The cocktails, the glittering city, the music and art, the adventure, and the delight of life itselfā€¦ Come join us. Hope to see you there!

Best of Luck (Chance of a Lifetime #3, Kate Clayborn) - solid ending to a really good series, though not my fav of the series. I really did like the characters, even if the first time they hook up it's so unhygenic that I couldn't find it remotely sexy. (The rest of the sexy times were fine.) And I felt like Greerā€™sĀ ā€˜mystery illnessā€™ was drawn out for the reader too long - like, bc of the POV we know sheā€™s got a chronic illness, itā€™s not ACTUALLY a mystery to us. But all in all, pretty good,
Midnight Flit (The Carstairs Affairs #2, Elin Gregory) -Ā  LOOOOVED this! Such fun! I loved spending time with Briers and Miles again, this time including Miles' mother, being pursued by all sorts of foreign agents and a trip on the Orient Express. Also possibly the first super erotic leg shaving scene Iā€™ve read. (Iā€™m sure others are out there, this was just my first.)
sidereal (girlbookwrm, verbalatte) - Stucky, 67K, soulmark AU, really great worldbuilding in this, lots of greatĀ ā€˜historicalā€™ andĀ ā€˜pop cultureā€™ stuff for soulmarks, lots of really chewy details on soulmark compatibility and multiple soulmates. honestly, a LOT of great worldbuilding in whatā€™s a relatively small number of words.
misc shorter fanfic, including this very satisfactory fake-dating-for-grant-money fic

[Free eBook] The Fat Death by Michael Avallone [Comedic Pulp Mystery Thriller]
The Fat Death by the late Michael Avallone is the 15th novel in his Ed Noon series of vintage pulp mystery/crime thrillers with comedic elements, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Story Merchant Books.
This was originally published in 1966 by Curtis. The popular, long-running pulp mystery/crime series stars a P.I. in New York City, who often takes on cases with oddball clients, leading to zany adventures.
The case takes place among the New York City fashion world, where an eccentric self-improvement guru has begun a marketing campaign for promoting a dieting scheme, and becomes one of the P.I.'s clients when unexpected fallout from industry espionage leads to mysterious deaths.
Offered DRM-free worldwide, available at Amazon.

Description ā€œBeware the Fat Deathā€ reads the thousands of leaflets fluttering down from the sky over Manhattan. A thin man, giant freak, who calls himself the Slim Savior, has begun a huge campaign because he has some idea about making America dietconscious, but nothing that innocent is the byplay that ensues from his doctrine. The fashion world and the garment industry is also the background for Noonā€™s love affair with Alberta Carstairs, which will have repercussions some thirty yearā€™s later when a bastard son walks into Ed Noonā€™s life unannounced.
