it’s posting about four friends ghost quartet time!!!  fun lil bar song about drinking whiskey, for sure, but the way that each of the whiskies and their descriptions corresponds with the OG characters of whoever’s singing.
“evan williams / you dirty-faced, scruffy-kneed boy” - not even strictly the bear, just following brent’s ‘bad men’ characters in general.  scruffy like bear fur, dirty-faced as a bad man is.
“oh jameson / you dignified righteous young man” - idk why this parallel to rose just GETS me.  like if you had to describe rose red’s vibe in one phrase, then this would be it???  dignified, sure - she’s the starchild, she’s in love, she’s a mother and a sister and she’s trying her damnedest to get all these items.  but righteous, my god - no one in the show is more righteous than brittain’s characters.  the way she literally went through several lifetimes out of spite just to get revenge on her sister.  “get over yourself, mom!” and “so why don’t you just shut up?  why don’t you, just have another fucking drink, and shut the fuck up?” and “why don’t you just go fuck all your fucking books / and we’ll see who’s smarter / oh, we’ll see”.  (and yes, maybe this is just me being in love with all of brittain ashford’s line deliveries, but i digress.)  and young?  yeah, she’s young.  she’s the kind of cruel that only a spurned young lover could be.  (also i’m trans and an expert in genderfuckery.  rose being described as a man just feels right.  she’s the type of brash and violent and vindictive and petty and wrong that characters who are women are so very rarely allowed to be.  kissing dave malloy on the mouth for this one, fr)
“oh, maker’s mark / you sweet little temptress, you” - this one just makes me giggle.  if anything, this is the description that made it snap for me.  the astronomer is the temptress!  he’s the love interest, the tip of the love triangle that all this shit started with because he couldn’t keep it in his pants!  (dude, with her sister?  fucked up and evil, fr).  but like, no matter the storyline, he’s the lover.  (except for maybe the arabian nights storyline - but even then he takes on a romantic role, serenading thelonious monk on the piano every night.)  the way he fuckin.  gave the photographer his number after he fucking ran the victim over.  like please man.
“lagavulin / you lovely lady of the lochs” - pearl literally drowned in a river.  lmfao L my queen

"Timothée Chalamet's £150 grail boots would make Bear Grylls proud" - British GQ
I love your sense of apropos, or your idea of coincidence...

Carmy does not fuck
I’m now on season 5 of Shameless, and I can’t stop thinking about JAW’s quote from a GQ interview last summer:
“Carmy's, like, the least sexual person. In playing him, I was aware that he had no room for love,” White says, bringing up one particular article that points out there might be some projection going on. “So I appreciated that she was aware that Carmy does not fuck.”
Obviously this was pre-Claire and Things Changed in s2. But knowing that JAW was bringing that energy to the character in s1 is really interesting to me given that Lip Gallagher definitely fucks. A lot. He has swagger, he knows he’s attractive, he pulls a ton of women, he uses sex to get what he wants even when he’s still basically a kid.
Some of Lip’s sex scenes are played for laughs — like everything on Shameless, with varying degrees of success. But sex appeal, bravado, and the baseline assumption that Lip is very deeply hot (as well as smart and capable) is an integral part of his character in a way it’s not for Carmy, even though it’s the same actor with the same face and body etc.
I wonder if JAW was using the sex thing as a way to differentiate Carmy from Lip, whom he’d played for 10 years, his whole adult life. He talks in that interview and others about really being ready to leave Lip behind and worrying that Carmy was too close to the same “smart kid from a tough family in Chicago” role, even though the two characters under the surface are not too similar imo.
So I think sex serves as kind of a wedge between the two characters. Same with anxiety, maybe — Lip’s got 99 problems but panic attacks aren’t one of them, at least by s5.

when u realize the song is called "fathers & sons" because like pearl and rose, the father (played in that song by dave malloy) and the son (played by brent) have a generational spiral thing going on. the son is alluded to be brent usher because in "usher, pt. 3" father usher says "our son had fled to new york city with his cello", just like the son promises to do in F&S ("i'm gonna play cello / in a rock'n'roll band"). which makes the father also dad usher - which tracks, because of what roxie said about their parents drinking all the time in "family meeting".
but in "four friends", dave's character sings about his own father, "sitting in the easy chair / he'd rip open your wax and pour a finger or two / and then he'd sit in the dark and just stare". and in "bad men" shah zaman (brent's character) says that when scheherezade dies he'll "keep drinking / for 42 years / and old old man / all alone in his chair". and we know that shah zaman is the man in iran talked about in "the astronomer": "he hasn't spoken to anyone alive in 42 years / he turns his mind off every day / and stares at the wall". THUS, if the man in iran = shah zaman, and the man in iran = the father in "four friends", THEN dave's father in four friends is shah zaman, who is played by brent.
so just like rose and pearl being both each other's mother and daughter at some point, brent and dave play both each other's father and son in different stories, which is why the title of F&S is plural.

Do you suppose they came across a 1984 Toyota Celica by chance or they took it to the shoot to complement the retro vibe of his styling ?
Sidenote: while checking Martin Scorcese's '80s filmography* I found out he did a Bob Dylan docu-film in 2019 called "Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese". Small world!
*coz i think i've seen this exact outfit in one of his films
