Day 14: Inspiration

Edison's original purpose was gonna be my other oc Cal's evil older brother, like I had mentioned in a previous OCtober post, but he evolved into something deeper than that.

Astarion's sass really inspired me for some of Edison's personality (and his voice actor, Niel Newbon, is also Edison's voiceclaim for me too) I also really liked plague doctors in general, especially Julian from the Arcana mobile dating sim, so Edison became one, too. What's funny to me is that Edison is very much on the asexual spectrum, being kinda demisexual, and Edison is also easily embarrassed and scandalized by sexual intentions or pda while Astarion and Julian are very uh...sensual lol.

Y'know, I was planning to make a list of OCs anyway so this is a good excuse to do that

Gonna giving their names and fandoms with a couple of facts under cut (i feel like this might get long Very quick)

(Mid-edit Apple: minor Canto VI spoilers, nothing really story-related but I do use terms mentioned in 6.3 in passing; better safe than sorry tho)

Tamami Mochizuki (Persona Series)

As her last name implies, she's related to Nyx

She's my watsonian/in-universe explanation to where the rest of the arcana shadows are

Her persona variant is Akhlys; heavily based off Riordan's interpretation of her, meaning she can control poison

Her appearances changes a lot more than her brother's since the collective idea of suffering/misery changes over the ages while death stays stagnant (I've been considering making her look gyaru since that seems to be associated with japanese mean girl tropes)

Ena Kutsuki (Persona Series)

Initially, her name was Era, but I changed it somewhere down the line (did you know that the name 'Ena' has japanese origins too?)

Demigod of order; got a certain cup's magic handed to her after Striker's AI takeover attempt

Her bones are fucked up because of said magic (her spine can literally burst out of her back and turn into extra arms doc ock style)

She is being rizzed up by the goddess of misery and neither are aware they're in the slowburn plot and mutually believe they are friends (both of their friend groups can see how lovesick they are)

Cai An-Yue (ProjMoon; Lobcorp)

She's named after me! (My chinese name is Cai An Yu)

She has stolen her world's Library and made it her own

I'm considering classifying her as some flavor of Erlking because she's been fucking around the timelines and superimposing herself on various people and/or corpses

Transfem, any pronouns; ENA Dream BBQ is her voiceclaim (both voices)

Their favorite attack is F-smash; their second favorite is Side-B (hammer flip)

They have a weird relationship with their creator (Octave), since they were initially made as a murder protocol and ended up accidentally developing a personality along the way; by the time the incident cleared out their creator went "wait, shit, I didn't expect that to happen I'm not ready to be a mom–"

They're on good terms for the situation they're in though

Their original name was Ocean before i changed it to Cordelle (Ocean started to sound less like a word the more i said it)

Whaleship Essex (Azur Lane)

Heavily inspired by Ishmael from Limbus Company

Very post-adventures 2!Shadow the Hedgehog coded

Feral; very prone to biting people regardless of whether they're friend or foe

Galatea "Gamma" Soliel (Miraculous/Genesis)

Ladybug holder; she's in a different timeline where the Miraculous have landed outside of Paris

All of her teammates are idiots and she only Vaguely tolerates the Black Cat because she Knows he's in a perpetual state of "Nagito Komaeda in his bad luck cycle"

Has shanked the Butterfly once; the Butterfly keeps trying to do homoerotic swordfights with her (they're similar in age)

May or may not be inspired by Mitsuru Kirijo from Persona 3, I can't tell you because if she was then it was likely subconscious

I just wanted to drop this voice canon video I found because I wanted to share this with someone and I loved their choices. I saw a YouTube video by Dmitri A. that had Jason Momoa as Muriel and Vincent Piazza as Lucio.

The choice for Muriel for me was a "Why didn't I think of that!" moment. But the Lucio one impressed me because I was having trouble picturing actors native to New Jersey with that particular type of voice. The only one I can name with some thought is Joe Pesci.

Boy, if I had a nickel for every time I heard a Jason Momoa Muriel vc... I’m very picky about voice, though. I’m glad you found choices you liked!

on the subject of dialect, though: Vincent Piazza is a New Yorker. While NY and NJ have a lot of overlap in sound changes and vocabulary, there is a big difference between the dialects. (treating them as interchangeable is a pet peeve of mine - but like I said, I’m picky about voice.)

There are a lot more actors from NJ than you’d expect 😂 and it’s a much less Goodfellas, Guys-and-Dolls dialect than people think, too. Joe Pesci is a New Jerseyan, and either he or Danny DeVito is probably the first NJ accent people think of? but so are Paul Rudd, Ethan Hawke, Meryl Streep, Kirsten Dunst, Zach Braff, Christopher Reeve, Zoe Saldana, Bruce Willis... 

If you want to hear a nice, modern Jersey sound, I recommend watching interviews with any of them. I lean toward interviews for vcs, rather than clips from movies, because most actors use a dialect onscreen that’s different from their natural speech. (That’s another thing that bugs me in some of the voice headcanon videos floating around - using movie clips as references. An actor putting on a dialect for a role is very different from someone who actually has that dialect.) Paul Rudd, Meryl Streep, and Bruce Willis especially have a lot of the sound changes I like. ☕

• My reference point for them always comes back to the fact that they came back from death having to learn everything from scratch. From the moment you are born your understanding of things grows with you. Agrippa has the brain capability of a 28y/o but who has only lived 3 years( brought back from death till now) trying to make sense of things. Emotions complicate those things alot. They do have them, just doesn't know how to express it.

•I imagined Agrippa having somewhat joyful and absent-minded tone despite what mood they are in. Which can be quite funny. Them being mad but they still sound the same as they normally do. Only difference is their vocabulary.get ready for confusing taunts, since they use alot of words to make new once to make up for words they don't know ( search shakespearean insults uwu)

•Very polite way of speaking, think starfire from the tean titans cartoon (2003) but less hyper

Don't ask for their singing voice, they don't sing , they do hum tho, quite alot actually. To actually get them to sing they have to consume a lot booze and its not worth it , as they sound like 5 cats in a blender

I absolutely see Jeff Goldblum's behavior and mannerisms in Julian. Hence why I love them both. But the voice... has always had some "elderly" undertone to it which I can't really imagine on Julian.

So I propose something different, cleaner, yet a bit similar.

The original creators gave brief descriptions of what the M6's singing voices sound like in an ask arcana post about karaoke. My taste in music is rather eclectic, so I'm apologizing in advance in case I can't think of a song/singer that works super well for them. I tend to make up scenarios for songs instead of thinking of specific characters so all song assignments were made in the last hour ...

Jeff Goldblum

The developers said it themselves. Julian's voice and mannerisms are heavily based off of Jeff Goldblum characters. If you want to know what he sounds like, find a clip that has Jeff Goldblum singing in it

That aside, he has a "limited singing ability" and tends to "talk-sing" through songs, but is "great at duets"

Asra

Described as having an "airy, intimate voice," but is bad at karaoke because they don't get off of the couch

I know it might feel like this song just got finished being overplayed, but considering that he's a polyglot this song and voice and the lyrics just fit him so well:

This song and voice don't quite capture the vibrato part, but the warm tone, alto pitch, and commanding power really scream Nadia. She did lead an army into battle! (Muriel's route)

(Same anon from the voice canon)"Boy, if I had a nickel for every time I heard a Jason Momoa Muriel VC..." Now I'm imagining you rolling up $100 worth of nickels just from that, lol! That was my first time seeing a non-white person for Muriel's VC, most of the ones I've seen were white or "I need to sit on this for a minute".

Especially for me as a black woman, I'm tired of seeing white voice actors for non-white people and then having people not see a problem with that.

For the Lucio VC, you can blame the southerner (native Houstonian) in me for that one, lol! It sounded a little like an NJ accent to me, but then again because I'm not from the northern part of the states it's easy for me to mix them up.

No shame - New York and New Jersey accents have so much overlap, a lot of northerners get them confused, too 😂 Like I said, there are no “right” or “wrong” VCs (except the aforementioned white VAs for bipoc characters) - my personal standards are just very specific when it comes to voiceclaims. 

(and yeah it’s probably close to $100 in nickels 😂 that, and the Disturbed cover of “Sound of Silence” - I think, as a fandom, we need to explore more diverse options in the Deep Voice arena ☕)
