MXTX novels are just "What if they're typical side characters, but they're my main?"

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are just little brothers, and they're not sect leaders. Though both sect heirs, none of them are on the number 1 spot. They don't even have protag halo seeing as how one of them died and one whipped to incapacity. TBH, in a typical story, Jiang Cheng and Lan Xichen have more main character vibes. Heck, even Xiao Xingchen has more mc vibes. But I love it for that.

Shen Qingqiu is not even THE sect leader, and his cultivation isn't even that strong for being a late starter. He is just a peak lord, in an arts peak at that. Typically, Luo Binghe as a protag would end up in a battle Peak like Bai Zhan, and Luo Qingge has more 'typical antagonist Shizun' vibes. But no, we are given a pretentious fan-welding underhanded antagonist. And that makes it more interesting.

Lol, so Xie Lian is an OP martial god, the most powerful even, and Hua Cheng is a literal disney princess rags to riches story. However, the story revolves on 'what if you're a main character in every way but you're still helpless?' Xie Lian has repetitive cases of bringing more dooms than blessings despite being a god, and Hua Cheng's gradual rise to kinghood was too slow that he could not help Gege when he needed the most help.
