Writing this on my phone at work so a lil jumbled but one of the things that really does make Macdennis one of the greatest will-they-won't-theys in tv history and why it doesn't annoy me they haven't gotten together yet even this far in when I would usually be pulling out my hair in other cases much earlier on is that it doesn't fall into a lot of the common pitfalls of the genre because in most shows, you *know* the characters are going to be together from the start and they don't actually have a solid reason why it can't happen sooner, other than they need to drag it out for the show, so rather than use the tools they have and naturally play off the existing tension between characters, they almost always feel the need to throw in arbitrary, extraneous, and often frustrating external obstacles instead, like a series of random cardboard cutout boyfriends/girlfriends/wrong place/wrong times that last entire arcs over and over again for the *sole purpose* of keeping them apart and being like not yet tee hee, to the point where you're just like okay, okay, get on with it, already, but with Sunny, almost every obstacle is *internal* (or based on already built in external factors that affect them internally and haven't just been fabricated on the spot to create problems in the relationship): Mac's struggles with his sexuality and religion, both their parents' intense homophobia and neglect, Dennis' past experience of being sexually assaulted, and his fear of being perceived as anything less than perfect in a society he's learned he has to hide from/always be stealthy in, lest you be taken advantage of or hurt, in general that societal expectation, you will get married to a woman (Maureen), start a family, live a "normal" nuclear life, that's how the story goes, etc. etc. not to mention the culture of the time the show itself first aired, network tv of 2005, they didn't start with this endgame in mind, practically unheard of that they would ever get together in any official capacity even if they did, so they were able to grow separately from each other before starting to grow together, naturally inclined toward each other, yet just as naturally held back by themselves and the world that made them this way. But eventually... they outlived that world, and after being so used to standing still, now they're struggling to keep up, to find themselves, to find their place in an environment they no longer recognize, and to reconcile the fact that maybe they don't have to hide anymore, maybe they don't have to be miserable, to run away, it's okay it's okay, but it was not okay for so long, they need time. And I'll get into the parallels more another time because I'm obsessed with them, but in Waiting for Godot (and in turn Big Mo), there's the theme of "The whole world changes, only we can't," but Mac comes out, Dennis claims back his heart, Big Mo shows up, so maybe they can maybe they can, and that change is necessary before anything else can move forward. And god, do I have a lot more to say on *that* topic and theme of change, but I'm saving it for a full essay, god willing🤞

hi! so, this might seem like a weird question, but i wanna start drawing characters from fandoms that i really like but i don't know how to combine that style with my own, so do you have any advice/strategies that might work? ty!! ^^ :]

It can be really tough to get started and daunting on deciding how much to be inspired art-wise by the source material or how to adapt your own art style to the source material! - Break your reference characters into basic shapes! This works really well as it allows you to not get too hung up on the style-specific details! shapes are translatable across all styles! - Doing screencap redraws can be useful if you're trying to find the characters 'voice’ in your own style. You'll have context, some nice posing / dynamics to reference and it takes a lot of the 'thinking' out of the piece so you can focus on raw drawing rather than the pressure of coming up with absolutely everything! - I think clarifying what it is about your own style that you love is key! I always call it your negotiables/non-negotiables. Is the way you draw eyes and noses killer? You love the way you construct faces? It could be a little more general ie: your use of varying shapes, lineweight or line of action! Once you've figured out your non-negotiables you can identify your negotiables! Does the fandom reference have really cool colours? There's no shame in folding that into your style! Does it have a really pleasing simple way of drawing the eyes? Incorporate that but keep the nice way that you draw ears or hands! Drawing is like have a big list of ingredients (your inspirations and references) and picking and choosing what you're going to use for each recipe (illustration...lol...okay bit of a tired metaphor but you get the idea) - Don't feel pressured to leap into a full finished illustration as your first drawing of a character! I think everyone does some secret heads-facing-left or 3/4 floating torsos in order to 'find' the character a little on the page The long of the short is that it’s practice! The more you draw, the more comfortable you'll get at combining the two and you’ll become more confident with what you see emerging on the page! hope this helps a bit! <3

met the most canadian man ever yesterday. he was a visitor at my museum and of course he was wearing an nhl hat. so whilst i was closing up one of the galleries, i casually asked how he'd found last night's game, and once he'd gotten over the fact that some random guy in wales was asking him about hockey, he was like "i didn't even watch it because timezones suck" but told me he was rooting for the oilers in the final and would have watched if he was at home. i was like "ha ha yeah time zones DO suck" and explained that i hadn't slept yet because i stayed up to watch it and that i basically have to do this multiple times a week if i wanna watch live games on a regular basis. i think i felt true pity from him in that moment lmao because he was like "i guess hockey ruins your life no matter what continent you're living in" and seemed pretty surprised that someone had to ruin their sleeping pattern that much for hockey, but in a sympathetic "i get you" kinda way instead of a "what are you doing with your life" kinda way

then i asked him who his team was and he told me he was a montreal fan (boooo) and i was like damn dude we could have been friends but i'm a bruins fan. and in my head i was like envisioning a showdown in front of the paintings or something, but instead we decided that "fuck the panthers let's go oilers" was enough of a common ground to overlook that. so, uh, i think i just solved all hockey rivalries? maybe?

I think he really likes blue. All of the outfits I draw him in are primarily blue (and cream white), regardless of the hue or tint.

4. What is this character's hobby?

Canonly he enjoys kickboxing. I think he's picked up an assortment of little things he likes to do. Focused his efforts in many things instead of one specific one. He likes gymnastics (think he's 2nd best at it, behind Svetlana) and his audition tape leads me to think he likes ballet too. He likes very physical / active stuff basically. I want to say he's good at playing some kind of instrument too but that's a whole different world (knows nothing about band). When you have a lot of free time at home, you learn to use it.

5. What is something I wished happened in canon to this character.

I wish he didn't make All Stars finalist (if that counts). It should've been Mal and Zoey the whole way through. I wish the reset button thing never happened either. Also, I wish him being in juvie was expanded on some. Most of the things are issues I have with the All Stars writing... I just want him happy. Him being a canon system drives me insane because there is so much bad stuff implied there (Vito... Mal...) someone get him out the house and get him some baked goods and a nice kiss on the mouth.

9. What is my platonic OTP for this character?

I have sooo many -> Mike/Zoey (in my brain she's a lesbian with comphet... realizes it during ROTI and they just stay friends)... Mike/Duncan (juvie buddies who know a little too much about the other's childhood), Mike/Cameron (Cameron knowing Mike was a system super early on... knowing all his ticks and stuff). Also a big fan of fanfictions where Mike and Anne Marie are friends after ROTI. I'm a shipper but friendships are super important to me too.

Why am I getting emotional over Zane's and Wu's dynamics in the earlier seasons at 4:36AM

I can't stop thinking about how potentially broken and emotionally destroyed Wu was after Rebooted because he failed another of his students.

Another student of his died because he feels like he wasn't fast enough, Morro died because Wu didn't stop him, and Zane died the same way.

I can't stop thinking about Garmadon trying to comfort his probably depressed brother in any way possible.

The closest thing he has to a permanent student is Lloyd, but does even count? Lloyd is his son, and the thought of losing his son after so much bullshit seriously terrifies him.

Garmadon can only imagine some of the potential pain he would go through if he lost Lloyd, he can't even fathom Wu's because Wu has known the Ninja for much longer.

I can't stop thinking about Zane probably finding comfort in his master before he knew he was a robot, Wu was the only one that didn't find Zane weird.

I can't stop thinking about how Zane was definitely Wu's favourite for a while before Lloyd, and in a way he tries to show that with either small personal talks, or reassurances of having another family waiting for him no matter what happens to his original one.

God damn it DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE ICE CHAPTER AND IT'S FUCKING IMPLICATIONS ON THEIR RELATIONSHIP.

5. favorite little detail in a drawing you did

this one was kind of hard to answer because i lean so much more to simplification over 1:1 detail... that said, i really loved these ones!

the bag from the top photo is from here, minato nui on left is from some con-related draws, the ballpoint splatling on right is from a vintage draws compilation!

i just really enjoy drawing little objects and props, and as much as i'm allergic to backgrounds, i hope to overcome that next year because my friends know i love getting obsessed over random objects for a few days...

9. any new art mediums youve tried (or overall styles if you havent tried new mediums)

i haven't gotten to do much mediums outside of digital art unfortunately.... but i would say this year was the year of chibification! i turned so many characters into little guys this year (shoutout to the nui tree!). which is really ironic because i also realized this year i find full illustrations more satisfying to work on throughout the process, despite the "simplicity" of chibis.

i did some limited color styles too! (blue, purple, and red + b/w). hopefully i can do more deliberate color palette stuffs though. i think it'd be a great exercise.

stylistically wise i think i could've tried more, but. its ok! thats what 2024 is for. yipee!
