5. What do you think is the best trait a person can have?

I think perseverance? Or a drive to keep going forward, what it is. Not necessarily ambition, but I think it's important to get back up after getting knocked down. You don't have to reach for the stars as long as you're reaching for something.

7. Do you collect anything? If yes, what?

I do! I accidentally rambled about all the things I collect in a different answer, so this time I'll post some pics in a reblog! Ooh, actually one thing I didn't mention, is that I collect World of Warcraft books. I don't have all of them yet, bc I honestly ran out of shelf space, but I have a steadily growing collection of them. I started playing WoW when I was 7 years old, and reading the books when I was 9. It's been startlingly close to 20 years at this point.

10: And lastly, the classis, what is your favorite color?

Hahaha. I am obsessed with the color teal. To the point I'm actually and relentlessly teased about it. Everything in my life that can be teal is teal. (Up to and including any cocktails I drink.) Someday I'll do a round up with pics of everything, but honestly, I don't think it would all fit in one picture. We're talking my clothes, my work scrubs, my phone case/wallet/water bottle, my bedding, most of my journals, all of my stationery, my medication (accidental but funny), my craft supplies, my plushies, all of my sex toys... It's bad. But the reason I did that is bc it was super depressed, literally everything in my life was grey/black, and one day I decided that I would do one little thing to spark a little bit a joy. So I got like. A teal pen, or smthn, And it slowly grew from there. Seeing that color just makes me happy. It's bright and fun and tropical, and so satisfying to see my coordination. I may look like a cartoon character, but it makes me happy <3 And, if I ever lose something, people know immediately that it's mine! Now, there's rarely a moment that goes by where I'm not wearing some flavor of teal somewhere.

2. talk about a notable time a narrative or character has looked you dead in the eyes and said “fuck your plan, here’s what we’re actually doing.”

oh this happens to me plenty. i tend to have very detailed outlines as a rule, so there's not a lot that catches me off-guard in terms of plot. but actually there's a wip i've got going right now where the first scene is, currently, 3.2k and counting -- which is absolutely fucking unheard of for me, a person who doesn't write scenes over 2k if i can help it. but the characters involved just kind of grabbed me by the shoulders and said, there's still things to say and do here, it's not time to move on yet. it does tend to happen the most in terms of length of the overall fic; the recent d&d movie fic i did was supposed to be a five times fic, and it is... aggressively longer than that.

7. tell us about the plot of the first fanfic you ever wrote

when i was in first grade, i wrote a story about the flowerpuff girls. like the powerpuff girls, but they were flowers, instead. i think this is hysterical, because it's very much in line with my interests today. i didn't know that was fanfic though; if we're talking about my first intentional fanfic attempt, i used to post self-insert naruto fanfic on quizilla, a sentence that ages me significantly every time i type it.

20. what is your favorite trope to write?

i don't tend to set out to write tropes, actually, so this is hard to answer. part of me wants to say mutual pining, but in terms of classically written tropes, i don't think i've ever really... done that? i've been doing a lot of found family and nontraditional platonic friendships, though, so probably that.

40. best piece of feedback you’ve ever gotten.

someone made the comment to me once that reading my fic was like walking through exhibits at a museum. i think of that often and i hold it very close to my heart.

47. what story are you most proud of?

forcing myself to answer this one a second time. i am really proud of killing the minotaur, largely because it provided the motivation to start working on other projects again and to stop caring as much about getting things wrong. it isn't perfect. but it's good.

65. what is your favourite title for a fic you’ve written? 

reciprocity!! i've been saving that title for literal years and i just. was so pleased and delighted to finally have a reason to use it. es my beloved.

81. if you could go back in time and give your younger self a piece of writing advice specific to you, what would it be?

"it doesn't have to be perfect, it can just get done." this is a battle i fight with myself almost every time i write, and it always has been. i think i used to be better about just posting whatever, but there's always been some amount of "it has to be exactly what's in my head to be worth it," which isn't true or fair to do to myself.

93. do you hear other people’s writing styles when they talk?

sometimes! there are certainly friends where i can pick up on things they write that they also tend to say a lot in real life. i do have to know someone pretty well to do it, though.

Ch. 4/? – 'Who's Gonna Drive You Home Tonight?'

what's your dissertation about? you mentioned it in the siltcord and i'm really interested

oh my god hey I'm so happy you're interested! broad strokes because I've only been working on it for a few weeks but: the current theme is 'resistant landscapes' (both man-made and natural) in the later writing of Shirley Jackson!

Essentially, my main thread is that Jackson had two parallel strands to her work, which as far as I can tell began kind of interrelated but then diverged quite significantly? She's probably best known now for The Haunting of Hill House and to a lesser extent We Have Always Lived In The Castle, which are these. weird surreal psychological horror novels, engaging explicitly or implicitly with the supernatural, and centred around introspective, strange and sometimes deeply misanthropic female characters from isolated social units with dysfunctional, possessive relationships to each other.

Aaaaand then on the other hand she was known for being a 'happy housewife' who wrote these whimsical, quasi-autobiographical stories about all her children and how hopeless her husband was. These were popular too. Betty Friedan called her out in landmark 1963 feminist manifesto The Feminine Mystique for essentially spreading patriarchal propaganda.

The interrelation between the two is really jarring, because in one family is a source of horror and tragedy and in the other it's a source of, like... laundry. And Jackson's home life wasn't everything those stories made it out to be-- her marriage was unfaithful, her mother could probably be fairly called emotionally abusive, and as I talked about on the siltcord, she developed severe agoraphobia which often left her housebound.

So, yeah. My plan is to explore the depiction of families as constructed social units in dialogue with the environments they are constructed in in that work. Obviously a lot of that is relation of house to family, in the context of which Hill House is especially rewarding to consider, but I also want to look at relationships with nature and urban environments (especially in the context of settler colonialism and how that has had an enduring legacy in Jackson's particular part of New England), xenophobia (largely in regard to class, though racism and anti-Semitism are presences in her writing), domesticity and the idea of the housewife, and how horror relates to All Of This. The ideal of making a home within a hostile environment and of that environment turning on you, essentially.

I don't yet have particular areas of focus within that broad umbrella, but I might update with bits and pieces about it as I work? I don't really talk about academic stuff on here but I am very much Critical Literary Analysis Guy and I do also post relentlessly about haunted houses as a concept so if people would be interested in it maybe I will

anyway if you've read this far I recommend Horror in Architecture: The Reanimated Edition (2024) by Joshua Comaroff and Ong Ker-Shing which is a book about how horror movie tropes can be mirrored in built environments! I'm reading it right now and it's conceptually fascinating plus fairlyyy comprehensible by academic standards (if a little dense) if you, like me, are a Fool who knows nothing of architecture. very good also for getting to look at pictures of some of the most Fucked Up Buildings (affectionate) you've ever seen.
