OMG I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED, yes yes yes…

I want to preface this by saying this is in no means supposed to be canon facts or a diagnosis, I just think he is a very autistic-coded character coming from my own experiences as an autistic adult!

Long post under the cut because I don’t know how to stfu!!!

We will start with my main reasoning:

As we know, Dazai and his ability are based off of the work No Longer Human. Dazai being similar to the main character Yozo. Yozo is a kind of “stand in” for the real life author Osamu Dazai as No Longer Human contains a lot of real events from the author’s life. BSD Dazai and Yozo’s main similarities are the disconnection from others and high masking. Here are two quotes from the book:

“All I feel are the assaults of apprehension and terror at the thought that I am the only one who is entirely unlike the rest. It is almost impossible for me to converse with other people. What should I talk about? How should I say it? - I don’t know.”

This is incredibly similar to the lived experiences of Autistic people. I used to feel like an alien, or just fundamentally different than others. We tend to also struggle with communicating and other social dynamics. Dazai feels isolated from others, let’s very few people close, and searches for meaning by observing other humans and life and death itself. He quotes this as his reason for joining the Mafia. He also processes emotion differently, at odds with people around him.

“I managed to maintain on the surface a smile which never deserted my lips; this was the accommodation I offered to others, a most precarious achievement performed by me only at the cost of excruciating efforts within.”

This is one of the best descriptions I have read of Autistic Masking. Dazai HIGHLY masks. Dazai is known for not showing his true thoughts/feelings/opinions often in BSD. He can code switch easily, serious in one moment and then covering it with his over the top silly/unusual/maniacal personality. In NLH this is described as “clowning.” I also think Dazai’s genius “always according to plan” thing is sometimes a mask, so he doesn’t show the fact that he’s working hard to pull strings and figure things out.

He does have some insane pattern recognition though which is also an autistic attribute!

And now for the more surface level reasons:

Repetitive Behavior/Media Consumption: Dazai reads the same book over and over again. The Ultimate Guide to Suicide is a book he’s had with him since his PM days and he tells Atsushi that he already knows everything it says because he’s read it hundreds of times. A very common autistic trait!

Restricted Diet: Dazai seems to have a limited diet consisting of alcohol and canned crab! It’s a same food/safe food he has often. His room was described to be full of discarded cans of crab and bottles. Limited diets are common in autistic people.

Stimming: Dazai stims! He is a very wiggly and stimmy person. There’s several scenes where he is seen humming and singing or making little silly noises.

Dazai and his headphones are so important to me.. he seems to wear them frequently around the office. It could be noise cancelling or auditory stimulation that he likes.

The man never sits normally on a chair which is something I think a lot of neurodivergent people can relate to.

And of course floor time! Shown by him rolling around when stressed, laying on the rooftop and a few instances in Wan! like the marshmallow scene.

Also you can’t tell me that this is not two burnt out autistics after overworking their brains…

aki wasn't expecting it. honestly, he's not sure what he was expecting, he hadn't planned to take you to bed on only your second date. you were supposed to just have dinner, and maybe return to your place to have some drinks. nothing special. and yet, here you are. your hands tangled in long dark hair while aki's tongue slides against yours, his palms on your hips guiding you to fall back against your bed.

his heart is pounding, his mind is running a mile a minute; he shifts on top of you, and feels you blindly fumbling for his clothes, tugging on his belt, fiddling with the buttons of his shirt. it isn't long before clothes are discarded, tossed in a hasty pile on your bedroom floor. it's only when aki pulls away from your lips, panting hard, that he finally gets to have a good look at you.

god. when he picked you up, when he helped you into his car, when he took you out to dinner, if he knew underneath your pretty outfit, you were wearing this — aki runs a sweaty palm over his flushed face, barely realizing he's obviously staring. your matching set of white lingerie hugs your dips and curves. it's sparkly and adorned with lace, small bows tied on the straps around your hips and shoulders. the fabric is sheer, almost. soft to the touch, when aki places a palm on your side, taking in a slow, shaking breath, caressing up your stomach, and then allowing his fingertips to trace your collarbone.

"you're beautiful," is all aki can manage, his throat dry and tight just from those words.

"do you like it?" you coo, a smile tugging at your cheeks, "I wore it just for you."

for him. aki's jaw clenches, his fingers twitch. his thoughts whirl, as he imagines taking everything off you as slow as possible, savoring the way the lace fits around your chest, how the delicate straps look when they're ever-so carefully sliding down your hips, your thighs. you are simply irresistible.

"of course. I love it. you're perfect... you really have no idea what you do to me," aki hums, his lips grazing your neck, hovering close enough to feel his breath, "should I show you?"

short answer: not good.

tord just gets angrier and angrier. he lost his arm, his eye, his friends, and even the robot he went back to retrieve in the first place. i think he either A) drowns himself in work creating weapons of mass destruction, or B) becomes so god damn guilty he spends his time working on a time travel device to go back and "fix" everything. nobody knows what exactly he means by that.

the other three don't do well either.

tom may have not liked tord all that much, but knowing how much edd liked him, tom feels conflicted about killing tord (to his knowledge). he doesn't really show it, aside from drinking even more than usual.

edd lost his oldest friend, and always thinks back on how it all went down and what he could've done to change it (much like tord. muahaha the parallels). the most affected by tord's apparent death.

matt lost pretty much all of his stuff... which was a lot. he's a lot more distrusting of people after the end, and regularly mourns his awesome "junk" collection.

..... to be honest, i'm not a huge fan of where the end leaves the characters. part 2 manages to end on a bittersweet note, but it still doesnt really sit right with me. i guess my art takes place in a time where tord comes back for other reasons, and ends up moving back in for real.

this is probably a common question but roughly what is your approach to anatomy? i’m into biology in itself so that + nude figure studies have been so so helpful but your lines are so effortless and confident and stylized while still carrying so much raw human weight. that is especially why i love your 18+ stuff because it feels tasteful and real and not just gooner slop 😭. you have a very very good understanding of how fat and muscle sit on the body and i’m impressed thoroughly

😢 thank you so much! my go-to for learning anatomy was live drawing! not classes though but just watching people in motion and drawing like that. I still have a habit of staring so much at people when I'm outside mostly bc im thinking about drawing the shapes I'm seeing that I have to catch myself to not weird someone out LOL

after having a good enough grasp on anatomy then it was learning what to exaggerate and how I wanted to do it! many of my favorite artists who I dutifully copied as I learned how to draw are all animators so I picked up a lot of quirks from that despite not animating myself lol bowed legs and such

and LOL I'm grateful I'm above goon sloop..I think its impossible to come away from live drawing without appreciation for all kinds of bodies! and all the less flattering angles of them. I think its what adds a lot of charm and warmth to erotic scenes :-)
